  1. No, not possible. The JagCD format is nothing like the format used for PC CDs (ISO9660) and the CD needs to be in a specific format anyway (you need an audio track first, for some reason, and it just gets more complicated from there). It *is* possible to convert a BJL game to a CD format and play it with P:SE, but you need to spend a fair bit of time on it and you can only have one game per CD (a waste). That's what Carl did with Native. Just use a BJL cable Stone Thanks, Stone! Tho I don't believe my need is "desperate," I'm not usually one to pass up a new toy, especially if it's Atari related. I appreciate the info! I had a feeling that it wouldn't be THAT easy, burn and go. But, I hadda ask! Thanks again!
  2. Boy, I got busy for a few days (hosting a BBS reunion) and I come back to some interesting messages here! Thanks, always fun watching the parents squabble! Just so ya know, I was one of those people who spent a pretty penny purchasing the original Battlesphere off of eBay in December of 2001 (and at the time, I thought I got a good deal. $200 for BS along with a complete system, including a couple of spare controllers) and was quite annoyed to find out that, only a few months later, an updated version was suddenly available. Frankly, I would have held off on eBay, and bought the Gold version, had it been advertised for a few monther prior to it's release. (Maybe I missed the ads, but as far as I knew, one day, there it was, available for purchase.) SO, I decided to buy Protector SE. It was cheaper, and moreover, I didn't own the origianl version of Prot. Seemed an easy decision. Lars, Thanks very much for the info on building a BJL cable. My problem is that I'm not much of a creator. I'm a writer, I'm an office worker, and I'm a user. I don't have access to any welding tools, and have only welded a couple of things in my life, but it's not to say that I couldn't work it out somehow. If I want a cable badly enough... I was just hoping that Carl or someone would eventually come out with a ready-made cable. So, to ask something I asked earlier, is it an option to simply burn the game onto a CD, using the PC? I'm guessing not, that even with BJL it's not compatible. But it WOULD be about the easiest way. Again, thanks for the indulgence.
  3. ...and those Infocom games have some serious resale value. I've seen many of them sell for over $100 on good ol' eBay. Seems like Starcross once sold for over $300, but I might be off on that. MULE, well, that will never sell for under $100, most likely. I keep hoping to snag a "cheap" copy some day.. Yeah, right!
  4. My two cents, as such: Personally, I never found a keyboard I liked more than the 800. Nice and solid, keys just far enough apart that I don't hit two at a time (like I was constantly doing on the XE/ST keyboard), enough "drop" distance (the key went down far enough that I could actually TELL I was hitting it). I have an XEGS, which I currently use as my main 8 bit game machine, but only cuz of where it's sitting. I have limited space, so it's crammed in a spot that I needed a small machine with the detachable keyboard. Otherwise, I'd use the 800 exclusively. I just HATE having to translate games. I know the 48k memory can be a problem, but when I look at my game collection, I only have a couple of 64k games, and I don't normally play them. The 800 LOOKS like a what a computer should, if you know what I mean. It's what my mind sees when I think of computers of that era. Big and beige, can be dropped from almost any height without incident and I always liked the cartridge door. I feel bad, having it sitting in that closet while the XEGS gets all the biz...
  5. I'm sure happy there are people like you out there, supporting the Jag! However, forgive my ignorance... I have Prot SE, but as far as I know, there's no cable to allow me to transfer the Breakout Clone from my PC to my Jag. Unless, can I burn a CD, and use that? Thanks and keep up the good work!
  6. Just out of curiosity, do you guys feel that Towers II is WORTH the $50 price tag? I was always a fan of the ST game Dungeon Master, and it sorta looked like it'd be in that same vein. Is it a good game? Thanks!
  7. When you say "Crank out," do you actually mean they were published? Anything I'd know? Maybe I've been playing one of them for years and didn't know it! Can ya enlighten me, maybe a short list?
  8. ...One particular sound effect that always cracked me up was in Theme Park. The sound of a kid puking on the ground... Especially when a bunch of kids with hurl in rapid succession. Always build the food court right next to the entrance to your roller coaster or Bouncy Castle!
  9. You fellas mentioned a couple of good ideas. I hadn't thought about the cassette holder idea, but I did figure that if I ever ran across an 8 track tape holder at a flea market or thrift store, that baby'd be mine! Really, the idea of putting the games in alphabetical order in whatever storage container makes perfect sense. Every other system I own, I put them in order. I think the reason I never bothered with it for the Jag games was the fact that I currently use two storage boxes, and the one on top has the games I play frequently. Hell, I think I just like creating my own solutions to my gaming needs. I should snap a shot of the one storage box... It is adorned with screen shots from gaming magazines, and a bumper sticker. It's cheezy, but hey, it's my cheese! Thanks for the replies!
  10. You've all probably noticed just how thoughtless Atari was, in regards to the labeling systems of game carts for just about every system, from the 8 bit on up. Y'know what I mean? Take the 8 bit carts, for instance. Since they all "Had" to have " I was kinda stupid(er) when I was young. But at the time, I figured that I would NEVER sell ANY of my Jag games. Then, I went to using the mailing labels that came out of the boxes, writing on those, cutting them to size, and sticking them on the cart. It only looked marginally better than the scotch tape, as you can imagine. Now, I have been using one of those old fashioned labeling "guns," the type that spits out the black tape with white printing. The biggest problem is that none of these options will really stick well to the smooth, curved plastic tops. At least with the labeling gun thing, they can be removed without leaving any trace. But still, there are some games that I won't label, such as Battlesphere or Protector SE. So, I was just wondering what you fellow Jaguar owners do? I don't like the idea of leaving them in their original boxes, since the boxes can get damaged with all the opening and closing. (Yeah, I know. I'll put sticky stuff on a cart, but I don't want to bend a box...) So, how do you deal with the storage situation?
  11. Just off the top of my head... Of the games I still play on a regular basis... Tempest 2000 (I'll toss the soundtrack CD in my VLM every so often). I also really liked the sound effects in that game. In fact, Jeff Minter's games in general always had interesting sound. Pinball Fantasies has some cool music as well. I especially like the 2nd "Theme" song. (If you turn on the cart, start a game, then end it, THAT song is really quite cool!) If I'm "trying" to play the game while I'm particularly wasted, I'll let that song play while staring at the fractal background. I also like the music and sound effects from Stones N Bones, in particular.
  12. Really? I had never heard that. Do you happen to know which titles can only be played on a 130XE? I knew that a few games came out sporting 64K requirements, and that a couple of word processors could use the extra memory, but I had no idea about any with 128k requirements.
  13. Just thought I mention that if you ever run across a Beetle Mouse (eBay, or where ever), it's a really decent replacement for the standard ST mouse. I got mine from Toad Computers, back in the day. I did a quick check of B & C and Best; didn't see Beetle. They both have other styles, obviously. Not a lot of help... Sorry.
  14. The pics of the dust cover definitely looks as if it was made, specifically, to fit over a Jag w/o the CD player, but it does look like it would sit, albiet loosely, over the top of the Jag/CD. I was just wondering if anyone has bought one of these and set it atop their Jag w/ the CD attached? Or, for that matter, with a cart still in the slot? I'm a bit lazy, so I tend to leave the cart in the machine. (That, and some of the games I own, especially the used ones, are really finicky. I have to slam that cart in, just to get the game to work. So, once a game is working, I tend to leave it there.) Say, ya don't think it's a bad idea to leave a cart on the slot for days/weeks at a time, do ya? I have been using a makeshift dust cover for years. It's an old 1050 cover, that I took a Jag bumpersticker and stapled it to the cloth cover. Goofy, a bit, but effective. I wouldn't mind something that looks like I didn't create it when I was drunk.
  15. I ended up picking up a second copy of Pinball Fantasies, cuz my buddies are all hogging the high score board and I'm not good enough to unseat them, and too much a gentleman to "accidentally" erase their scores. The high score on Stones N Bones, for instance, is 10,249,432,260. Yeah, ten freakin' billion! What's your opinion of Ruiner Pinball? My pinball buddies just can't seem to get into it, tho from what I recall, it's a decent game. I haven't played it in a while, so I can't remember... Hmmm... I sold Atari Karts on eBay, too. You'd probably be surprised to hear that I actually HAVE 37 games. (I've only sold 9, but it sure seems like more.) I remember that Atari Karts got me SOOO pissed, that I ran up to my computer and listed it in eBay, just to teach it a lesson. Then I realized, "Geez, Guess I'd better play this game a bit more" and played it every day for the 7 days it took to sell it, and beat it. I've come to realize that I need that kind of pressure, sometimes, to actually get around to playing the games I purchase. Gunstar: I own Mutant Penguins, but haven't done much more than test it. You say it's a good game? I'm between games now, so maybe I oughta begin to Penguinize...

  17. Flashback is one of a (surprising) number of games that I sold on eBay during the winter. I decided, however, that I was going to play the game thru, so I did what any red-blooded gamer would do in my place: I looked up the gamers guide, and made my roommate, who is MUCH better at this type of game, share playing duties with me. We got thru it in a weekend, albiet a long weekend! I really enjoyed the game! I especially like the fluid motion of the game (what is that called, rotoscoping?), the running and jumping animations are great! Reminds me of Prince of Persia. If you haven't tried this game, and you enjoyed Flashback, you'll love PoP!
  18. It's kinda funny, in an odd sorta way, but I still feel kinda sad when I think of my kick-ass Atari 1040ST just sitting in the closet. Y'know, it was my #1 computer for years, with the 40 Meg hard drive, the 4 Meg of memory, the IBM AT/XT keyboard connector that I installed (never could type very well with the standard ST keyboard, plus a couple of the keys didn't wanna work) and ALL THOSE GAMES! It ran my BBS, stayed up late with me while I diligently wrote another short story... Now, with the limited space, it sits in the closet, quietly begging me to come in and visit, while it slowly deteriorates. The last time, I barely got the hard drive to start spinning. But, I'll never part with it. WAY too many good games. Way too many good memories... Uh, what were we talking about again?
  19. I've played most of the Jaggie racing games (except for that CD game, World Tour Racing) and I'd have to agree that it's a fine racing game, and probably the best the Jag has to offer. I owned it for a few weeks, and beat all the tracks. It's definitely one of those games that I could both love and HATE, at nearly the same time. Some of the tracks (in particular, that one with all the sharp edges) I'd get stuck on a corner and stop dead, and WOW, there goes my controller, being thrown across the room again! But really, it was one of those games that just MADE me come back for more. I KNOW I can win this track. It looks good & controls well enough, but I didn't like the setup of the powerups, being flat on the ground and all. For me, it took more memorization to know where to drive so as to NOT run into some of them. Actually, come to think of it, often times I would pick up a powerup, and not use it. Just hold on to it, so I wouldn't accidently run over that 'reverse controls' icon. Oh, and regarding Pinball Fantasies, that is the game that spends the MOST time in my Jaggie. I really can't get enough of Stones N Bones, even after all these years.
  20. Frankly, I didn't think Space War 2000 was worth the price. I mean, as a collector's item, ok, I can see it. But I'm the kind of guy who won't buy every game for my Atari systems, only the ones I know I'll play and enjoy. (Which ends up meaning I own 85% of the library, but still...) Gunstar, you mentioned "quick play for about 15-30 mins. trying to get higher scores..." But unless I missed some game options, all I could do was start the game, fly around until I shot the ONE ship, and the 'game' ended. I ended up eBaying my copy; made a few bucks but not much more. Well, I made a guy from Germany happy. That's my two pennies' worth. I'd buy a complete copy of it, if one ever flies into existence. What was there WAS pretty darned cool. The dude with the extra eyeball sure freaked me out! Find Battlesphere if ya can. THAT's worth the $200 I paid back before the advent of Gold...
  21. AtariKen64: Thanks! It blends my two favourite obsessions, Atari and Red Dwarf. (And I do mean obsession. It took a couple of YEARS, but I FINALLY got all the RDs recorded from my local PBS station onto 4 VHS tapes!) Greg @ TAT: Well, now that you've changed the text a bit, and now that the date SAYS April 1st instead of April 15th (I didn't get the point of why you chose Tax Day...) it has enough clues, even without the highlighting trick, that I could've seen the joke. Still, Greg... C'mon, it's nearly JUNE! June Fools. Just NOT AS FUNNY. Just be happy that you nailed somebody, publicly, put it away and think up something new for next year. (I'll probably fall for that too...)
  22. Boy, it's too bad GeoDuel (Page 24) never came out. The pics sure made it look interesting. Anyone ever heard what happened to that one?
  23. Thanks, Steve! I never would've guessed that one on my own. So, the Translator disks I have must be a couple of different versions of the 800 OS. I did notice that certain games would only work with one or the other. Man, I LOVE this website! Where have you been all my Atari life?
  24. The eBay auction sold for around $30. 8 people, 17 bids. I find that interesting. I mean really, how many people do you suppose STILL have and use their Atari PC-x system?! Thanks for the info! Much appreciated!
  25. Hello! A fellow named Andrew Krieg has a really complete Atari 8-bit cartridge list and it has a rarity guide with it. http://www.execpc.com/~krieg/links/8bit.carts Whenever I'm selling stuff on eBay, I always like to mention how it's ranked on Krieg's list. Actually, his whole website is really kinda cool. He's got lists for all the Atari systems, as well as many others. http://www.execpc.com/~krieg/VidGames.htm Hope this helps!
