Yeah... the challenge with the 32X is finding all the screwy cables. It had to buy several setups to get all of the hookups. I think that there are only a handful of games that are worthwhile for the 32X, but it's still kind of a cool idea. Too bad it got pooched.

Don't know why it's been slipping down on my to-do list, but If thegoldenax is still planning on dying extra XM case shells for the special 25th Anniversary Edition of the console that he has planned, I should pick up another unit so I can leave one stock, while the other goes into the fancy purpliefied case

This is the first I'm hearing of this... do you mean a replacement 7800 case? That would be rather wicked. Where can I learn more?

Any update on making versions that can be used on 2600's?
I guess it depends on how quickly we sell out of this run of sticks.

Not quite "retro" yet, but very cool; I got two original "Bondi Blue" IMacs for free. I havent looked into what the internals are yet, they are both apparently functional, one running OS 10, the other 9.2.2. Both have the disc slot, not the tray, so not real early ones. I got some mismatched KB and mice, so I will be on the lookout for the correct color ones. I remember saying when they came out that I would buy one someday when the price came down, so mission accomplished!!
Oh yeah! I got one of these for $7 because the thrift thought it was a child's TV set. I got the deep red one which was their DV version for editing video. I can't bear to get rid of it!

Thanks! Hey everybody, can you help spread the word by linking the sticks on your Facebook or Twitter? Or tell your friends? We can really use your help getting the message out there. It would be great to get these out of my dining room.

Thanks!

My find for the weekend was an original fully functioning xbox with 3 controllers ant the necesary power and a/v cable - $10. XBMC on xbox #2 here we go! :-)
Awesome! I've got five xboxes that I bought for $5-20 each scattered around the apartment for XBMC. Adore it. The one in my arcade cab is also set up to do a bunch of MAME & emulation stuff. Fun! Congrats. I'm looking forward to my next place so I can get something a little bigger, and add a few more xboxes.

Okay - that docfile looks outstanding. Is there a spot on the net that lists other fixer-upper things to do while I have the unit open. Like I said, I'd really like to pimp the ol' boy out for my article. Thanks!

I successfully modded one of my "good" ColecoVisions with a new switch, a really cool active/standby LED and the RGB component kit. I had to resize the template to 6" in Paint Shop Pro. I did a fair amount of tweaking after I drilled the main holes too. On the full flicker set you'll notice I also accidentally removed an inducter I shouldn't have. No big loss though, the thing still works like a champ! 5-11, I'm gonna take another if they're still available. I'll PM you.
That is wickedly cool! As I'm getting ready to do my mod, I'm also thinking of picking up one of those BIOS kits. Any recommendation on where to get one? Any thing else I should stuff in there? I love your new power switch/LED combo. I must admit to a little Coleco envy.

I'm going to write up a story on Retro Thing showing how much you can pimp out an old COleco, so would appreciate any advice. THanks!

Non-video game score on Craigslist tonight. Picked up both the Star Trek Deep Space 9 and Star Trek Voyager complete series sets on DVD for $100 each. Not bad when you figure they are still over $300 each normally. Great shape too, the Voyager set even had the Best Buy bonus discs with it.
Now I just have to pick up Enterprise and I'll have all the Trek ever made! (And, no, I don't count the Abrams movie.) At this point I'll wait for Enterprise on Bluray though.
Just think. In 5 years, all those Star Trek episodes will come out on one Blu-Ray.
Nah, there's a lot of reasons that won't happen so I'm not worried about it.
It might happen with TNG and TOS. They were both shot in widescreen iirc.
None of those were shot with widescreen in mind. there is talk of re-releasing another spruced up verson of TOS, but matted for 16:9 screens. i.e. crop off the top and bottom to simulate widescreen, but it's less picture than what the cameraman would have seen in the viewfinder and would have composed. I've always been against matting like that.
TNG was shot on 35mm film, "full frame" as they call it. They can issue it on blu-ray, but they'll need to re-do all the video -sourced effects like phaser blasts & screen displays. Those overlays were sourced in NTSC video, so they'd nee to be re-done or have some sort of treatment to look good in HD. Fortunately all the models were shot on film too. If they still have those assets, those can be re-digitized in HD. Though it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to re-do those shots in CGI. CGI work is so cheap these days...

Stopped at my local Salvation Army which tends to overprice for stuff. They had two PS2's for $25 each, which strikes me as a little high these days (this is the sameplace that I got two PS2 slims for $15, so some days are better than others...). But I did find the following:
dingy SNES - $5
big sack of controllers & cables - $5
I mention the sack because it had 3x controllers etc. for the SNES, a Jaaks Atari joystick plug & play, and an HDD adapter for PS2! On top of that there are at least a dozen AC adapters of various flavors, which I can always use. Pretty nice haul! Now I've got to find out what kind of hard drives are compatible with my PS2 thingy, and then find out what sort of cool modding potential there is for such a combo. Yay!

I want to go on record as being deeply envious of that tape recorder box. WOW! That's some art. Reminds me of a psychedelic movie camera box I found some years ago... (2nd pic in this post on Retro Thing)
I went to Half Price Books today - an easy way to lose a lot of money. Besides breing thrilled to find a Blakes 7 book, I got Saturn Pro Pinball for $3, and a PS2 EyeToy +Antigrav game for $2 (they also had a loose eyetoy for... you guessed it, $2!)

I've gotta do an install too to cover it on Retro Thing. I've just been swamped, soI'm also hoping for a bit of a reference guide that's a bit more step by step. THough I'm getting really ansty ot see this thing in action! I might just have to soldier on and use the info that's ou there...

I swapped my regular SNES with this one and it worked perfect. What does the Red, White, and black cable do and is it safe to cut if needed?
Glad to see that it works for you. I'd have bought it off of you if you were interestd in selling it.

I w0ould suspect that those wires might go to the reset button inside so that you don't have to touch the SNES unit itself to reset. Is there a button on the kiosk for resetting? Or perhaps there's an internal timer that automatically resets at intervals? Just some thoughts.
COngrats. I'm a little envious.

Nothing game specific, but I found a 17" widescreen LCD monitor. It bore a sticker saying "not work", which bore out. Though the power light doees come on, so I risked the $5. I have a friend who fixes these, so maybe I can fix it up, or he can use it for parts.
Oh, and since we talk about he 80's an awful lot here, I found a comforter that someone had sewn 80's t-shirts onto. It's pretty great. Several for local sports teams (Cubs, if you must know...
), but there were other 80's things like EMpire Strikes Back, Bigfoot 4x4 truck... more crazy stuff like that! -
This is a bit OT, but since you guys know this a lot better than I do...

I'v got an upcoming project where I want to be able to Twitter from an unusual retro device. My plan is to get one of those ethernet adapter thingies for a Commodore 64 and just use that. There are folks doing that already, so it should be no problem to get help. It's also nicely self contained, so it's not like I"m just using the C64 for its keyboard. It's really doing the twittering.
I must admit I do like the idea of doing something with the COleco, though it doesn't sound as readily feasible. What about using an ADAM? I've never actally seen an ADAM in person, so I don't know what it's capable of. Would connectivity be really weird to acheive? Remembering of course that I barely know what I'm taking about...

Didn't go out thrifting, but while househunting saw a great place with a grandma who was rockin' an SNES on the front TV. It lives!
-
My method is to hit thrifts on weekdays. Weekends the ones I'm close to are pretty well picked over. There are also several thrifts that have special half price days (be early those days), and also have certain color tags for 50% off. Find out the day that they change those colors and there will be a bunch of merch that's freshly half off!
Today I found;
N64 Toy Story 2 - $2
limited edition spider-man fat PS2 console (kid put spidey sticker on it!
) - works! - $7memorex 5" color TV with RCA input jacks - $2.50
-
Or how about adding ethernet so I can Twitter from my Colecovision?

-
Final Fantasy NES (Has "Joshua" in red marker on the front, dammit!)
Probably been said a million times before now, but a little Goo Gone can make short work of that. Even on the label if you're REALLY careful. Some folks use kerosene too I think...
Game Boy Advance SP motherboard, battery, 2 link cables and Pokemon Fire Red (Amazingly it works! I just need a shell and charger and I'll give it to my kid!)
That's cool! YOu can find all kinds of cool transparent shells on Ebay for next to nothing these days. I just got one for my PS2 slim and it's gonna look sweet! It's great shopping for outmoded consoles.

Ka-chow!
"Kachow? What, is Don Martin working for you now?" - Dr. Forrester MST3K
Nothing much for me today - Dreamcast keyboard unused for $1.50.

Right, and my old Coleco above-ground pool is an eater of souls...

Are any of the vendors going to be offering these for sale at the Midwest Gaming Classic this weekend?
I was hoping to see some there myself.
I didn't spot any, I guess that no one wants to let theirs go. I did see a couple of our T-shirt tho, which made me feel really good.Missed opportunity imho. Captive audience willing to spend $. I know I was prepared to buy one. Now I'll have to do the online thing when I get around to it...
Well, you don't have to tell me.
We're waiting on a shipment of a crucial component in order to make some more. The sticks sold out really fast, and we weren't expecting this chip issue to come up. I'll let you guys know when/if we'll have additional sticks to order. -

I picked up a Dell 20" LCD for $70. I paid a premium because it was 4:3, 1600x1200 native with SVGA, DVI, Svideo, and Composite(NTSC and PAL). No scratches on the screen and no dead pixels. I have not found any LCD under $10 unless it is missing stuff and may not be working.
That's pretty nice. Last time I went to get a new 4:3, it was something like $300 as they knew if you needed one, they had you by the short hairs.
Sounds awesome, especially the video inputs. That's exactly the kind of versatility that I need for my work. A couple of the cheapies I've found had DVI, which surprised me, but none have conventional video inputs. You're right about testing them. I have bought a bum unit before. The trouble is that my SA tends to throw all of the AC adapters in a big tangle. I've been lucky to find several monitors that just had the Ac cord that plugged right in, but the ones with external transformers took a bit of doing. Worse yet is that the last two I found had a funky connector for the AC that didn't match up with the typical connection at the end of a 12 v AC adapter. Once I was lucky enough to find a little adapter cable that was perfect... I don't know if that little cable is an easy to find part, but I definitely need to find more.
I did see a gorgeous looking monitor today, but plugging it in revealed that it had been smashed. The screen displayed all kinds of weird patterns. It was acutlaly kind of pretty in a way, and if it would have just displayed like that I might have gotten it.
So yeah, I plan on carrying a power supply and that little adapter lead with me when I go thrifting so I can test stuff. Now if only I could find some nice hardshell carrying cases for them, I'd be in business.

In recent weeks it's been pretty dry. Local SA wanted $20 for a horribly yellowed SNES with two games & controller, but no AC adapter or video hookup cable. Same place has had 2 original iMacs for 6 months for $25 each. So the retro gaming & computing thing has been quiet for a while, but things started to get a bit interesting in the last week.
I've been seeing a number of 4:3 LCD computer monitors. Cheap too. I happen to have a video editing system who's interface is hard-coded to display on a 4:3 monitor. It looks goofy on a 16:9 monitor (and thorws off the work I'm doing), and buying a new 4:3 monitor is expensive as thy've passed into being a rarity at retail now. Clearly everyone is ditching their early gen 4:3 monitors, so now I have 5 of them that I pair between $0 and $12. The only PITA is that a coupld them use strange power connectors, so there's the dual challenge of locating the right power supply, and finding the rigth kind of pinout, but I've been really lucky.
I mention this here because there's still a lot of use for 4:3 monitors out there... if you've got a computer with a 2nd video port, it would be great as a 2nd monitor just to keep Facebook or Twitter open all the time or something... I also will be using one with my Dreamcast & its VGA box. Just thought I'd let you guys know that these are the salad days for 4:3 LCD's.
I got a couple great deals at the MWGC over the weekend, including an X-box component output box for $2. Since I mostly use the X-box as a media player (I've got five of them scattered around the house), I'm always interested in picking up those component outputs cheap.
I also got an original NES controller, but with fluorescent colored buttons. Looks like an aftermarket thing that you'd drop in - anyone remember those? I also got an Epoch handheld Dracula from Ianoid. Part of the adventure seems to be to figure out how to play the damned game.

But my big score was at a local thrift. They had a sack of those plastic gimmicks that snap onto Wii controllers; steering wheel, gun, etc. It was marked a buck - but I didn't care about those. I was intersted in the Wii sensor bar inside! Now I can have the sensor bar on another TV, and easily transport the console between TV's.
Better still was a Game Cube (no controllers or AC) marked $10.50. It had the Game Boy Player attached (no bootup disc tho), and included 15 games (without cases):
soul calbur ii
speed king
tarzan untamed
spy hunter
ghost recon
nfl street
kelly slater's pro surfer
spider-man 2
disney's hide & sneak
quidditch world cup
madden 2005
pikmin
super monkey ball
backyard football
star wars rogue leader
I may pick a couple games to keep, but then was thinking of letting them go in a couple little bundles on Ebay. I wonder if someone would pay $10 for the three football titles without cases for example. I doubt it. I guess they'll just go on the trade pile?

New Atari Compatible Console & Controllers
in Classic Console Discussion

I would vote for better output than regular composite. I've got enough ways to get composite output from various hacked Atari consoles, and the Flashback. I'd love to see those colors really saturated on a modern TV. By all means include composite for max compatibility, but I'd be thrilled by component or at least S-video. Something super modern like HDMI seems like it would be far more trouble than it's worth, but offering higher band color I think would do the trick. Besides, you could make claim thta he games will look like they've never looked before.
I've got the MCC (multi classic computer) mini emulator/console with VGA output. It does atari, and I've got to say I'm loving the look of these old games on a dynamic and modern display!
Oh yeah, and keep the two audio oscillators separate so that homebrew programmers can play with left & right sound placement like "Skeleton Plus"!
