  1. Alright! I can hardly wait til I can add something like this to my old monster. I've got a mod kit for Coleco I haven't installed yet, but it's only got composite out. WOuld much rather squeeze some extra visual quality out of the bad boy. Keep up the good work everybody!
  2. Not in the least. A good player can still run you in the thousands. Mine was originally priced at $160, but since it sat there so long (shockingly) it was marked down to just $40 when I got it. I guess no one saw it or realized that it could play the slew of Genesis titles that had to have come in with it. You're tlaking about having found a LaserActive, right? Yeah, those are special. Other than that when I see an LD player at a thrift, they are usually $10 or less. I think they assume that these are CD carousels and price them accordingly. I have 7 or 8 in storage (the one that I bought in the 90's when I was a teacher in film school is finally giving up the ghost), and I think out of those perhaps one didn't work. I'm surprised since the motor has to move such a heavy platter so fast, and the two sided players have that moveable laser... I figured that more would be worn out by now. Of course the other fun thing about finding an LD player is to look among the LP's to find the discs that probably came in with it. These are frequently misfiled with records, so you can buy a movie for a quarter. Iv'e even gotten Criterion edition boxed sets for a buck or two.
  3. That's an awesome deal. I would have happily paid that, but then I don't have a 3DO at the moment. Even if I did, I'd pay that just for the games or to re-sell the package if I already had them all. Chris I've always been interested in getting one, but not assembling it piecemeal. Since it has some roots in the Amiga (sort of) I followed its development with interest back then. I'm also always interested in systems that have some sort of music visualizer for playing CD's, and this one is pretty great.I'd probably say it's better than Playstation's... Thanks for the good words, guys!
  4. I also got to a point where I unlocked "cool mode", but I didn't see any difference in the game. What did I miss? Awesome game BTW! I'm going to playing this on my freshly unpacked Longhorn Engineer modded 6-switch all through the holidays!
  5. Been dry for a bit, but I scored a complete 3DO system today. they had the console behind the counter with no controllers or games, so I was going to pass (I have one broken 3DO someplace, and a game or two...). Then while pawing through the rest of the place Ifound the controllers hanging in a plastic bag, and a CD carrier that had all the games. Put 'em all together and you've got a pretty nice setup. I've only played the Haunted House remedial clone of Doom. I hope that the rest are a bit more fun that ths one... 3DO console 2 controllers -games mad dog ii shock wave shock wave - operation jumpgate rebel assault drug wars pebble beach golf links space pirates john madden football road rash fifa international soccer crime patrol 20th century video almanac escape from monster manor all for $20. Little more than I would have liked to pay, but to get it all at once for a system I didn't have yet seemed okay.
  6. Hiya. A while back, I read a post here that was trying to get a clever name going for those games that we buy that have the prior owner's name on them in marker. The author was suggesting calling them a name that was the same as some name he'd found a lot of... like referring to those kinds of carts as having been "Chad-ed", or "Jimmy-fied" or something like that. I did a couple searches of the forum and couldn't find what I'm remembering. Anyone else recall? I'm writing an article about something similar and wanted to point to this as a reference. Thanks for any help!
  7. Good scores today: - PS1 - 75 cents each Activision Atari 2600 classic games Big Race USA Crash Bandicoot 2 - TI - 40 cents ea. tombstone city munch man beginning grammar addition adn subtraction household budget management (2x) Famiclone, really tiny one with upright cart slot & two tiny controllers - $1.80 Game Cube console, purple with Pokemon wrap - $2.80 (last week it was in a bag for $25 with power supply and PS1 controller...) also cool was a Mini Disc player & wrist strap for $4, along with a Dell DJ 20 gig mp3 player for $2.50. It's a good day to like retro tech.
  8. Once I did happen across a giant lot of boxed NES games, they were gorgeous too. Almost like new. I picked up 30-40 games that day complete. Keep meaning to get them up on the auction block one of these days since boxed anything in NES seems a bit rare. Be sad to see 'em go - they look cool on the shelf.
  9. That's really rad. The Amiga is still a special lady in my heart, and the AMax was one of those things that showed just how awesome the Amigs could be. Congrats! Today for a buck fifty each I got some N64 games: Pilotwings 64 Mario Party Quest 64 Super Smash Bros. I got some other junk that was awesome, including another LD player for $6, an "AudioTron" by Turtle Beach (standalone rackmount unit that plugs into the network and lets you control and stream music from your PC) for $6, and best of all a professional digital scale for all the stuff I should be packaging and shipping out to people who want to buy my stuff. I've been dying to get a real scale, but they were always so expensive. I can finally print and ship from my house. So this might be the best puchase I've made in years...
  10. THose sound like pretty good deals. The trouble with the 32x is all the fiddly cables that you need. The 32x games are a bear to find, but that's okay. Not that many are worth thr trouble. Good luck on the Intellivision. I can count on one hand how many I've seen in the wild, yet I've found tons of the games - and mostly in boxes with the little overlays!
  11. Yup - they're all the same video cable. I'm looking for some mydself as I'll ne selling soem SNES units soon. Today I got a Pokemon branded/colored Game Boy Color for $4, Xbox steering wheel for 1.80 (probably went with that awesome modded xbox I got there last week), 2 boxed Game Gear games for a buck each (Chessmaster and SOnic Chaos). Coolest thing for me is that I got a Bakelite box made for carrying View-Masters, and it had a 30 or so classic scenic reels in there. 4 bucks! Also got a Rokenbok set which is like a remote controlled construction toy that sort of interfaces with Lego and stuff. I know I should give it to some kid, but it's fun for adults too. This set was another 4 bucks (originally cost well over a hundred!). I love the thrifts. It's like my birhtday every time I go.
  12. That X-box I got a few days ago is even better than I could have imagined. Initially it wasn't working, but I opened 'er up and jiggled some wires. and gave it a cleaning. It was definitely somewhere humid because the inner shielding is rusted. Not only is there an Xecuter 2 chip inside, but the prior owner had replaced the hard drive with a much bigger one, as well as replacing the DVD-rom with one that I hope is nicer for playing burned media. When I fired it up, i found it had nine emulators already installed, tons of retro games on the hard drive, and about 60 pre-installed x-box games too. It's even got some very early version of Media Center, set up to play networked movies from the owner's PC. This was clearly a guy because not only is one of these movie directories marked as pr0n, but in his copy of Dead Or Alive Beach Volleyball, all the girls are somehow nude. Wow. This is one of those guys that give the rest of us gamers a bad name.
  13. Bumper crop today. Wow. X-box - already modded with larger hard drive built in (I spotted the mod switches stsicking out of the thing) having trouble getting it to work, but worth the risk - $15 2x SNES junior systems with controllers and Super Game Boy - $12 2600 carts (30 cents each) California Games Front Line Wall Ball (first Avalon Hill game I've found in the wild in almost 20 years... and it's a 7!) Crackpots common-ish for trading: Qbert, Donkey Kong, Defender, Berzerk, Pac-Man, Human Cannonball, Missile Command, Seaquest, Starmaster, Skiiing, Keystone Kapers, Frostbite, Kaboom!, Robot Tank, Freeway, Sky Jinks, Laser Blast, Dolphin Genesis - Larussa Baseball (it was part of the bundle) Game Boy Camera (my fave GB thing ever!), printer, fresh paper, magnifier, - $3 34x Playstation magazine demo discs - $12 (I don't have to omany games for PS2, now I can try out some demos!) Syphon Filter PS1 disc 1 - found by my car in the parking lot...
  14. Nice day for me. Dreamcast console + N64 PSU (for some reason I always find N64's what that missing)- $1.30 Dreamcast concept 4 steering wheel(little steep, but the console was so cheap) - $15 This has nothing to do with anything, but I got four robotic lights + controllers... they're the kind of things you'd see at a dance club. These are pro gear, and even came in two anvil road cases for $30. I got 'em for the road cases, but who knows... maybe I'll put on a really nice party one of these days.
  15. Champ (is that the brand of the one that coils it's cord inside?) Atari 2600 joystick - $1 SNES Mouse - $1 SMB/duck hunt - $1 Spy vs. Spy for NES - $1 Really nice LD player with a separate drawer for music CD's - $15 (good because my main unit is getting a little noisy) Left behind a $10 NES system with zapper & a bunch of sprts NES titles.
  16. NiGHTS is an awesome game. I find that a lot of girls like it a lot for some reason. It was never that rare, thn somehow all of a sudden because hugely desirable. Same with Christmas NiGHTS. Gotta see if I've got a spare copy around. Cool that the 3D pad does more than just control a little flying jester man...
  17. It's been a while, but I got a really nice score today - all this was in a box for $10. Playstation 1 console, 2 mem cards, 2 early gen controllers PS underground 2.4 wcw nitro tekken 3 resident evil - director's cut namco vol. 1 bug's life tetris worlds grind session (alternate case) dune 2000 (no case) syphon filter 3 (no case) xbox DVD remote receiver (do these work with a universal remote?) crimson skies morrowind rainbox six 3 companion disc 007 agent under fire splinter cell - pandora tomorrow splinter cell - double agent ghost recon - island thunder ghost recon 2 halo 2 max payne Game Boy Color in original box with batteries and WInnie the Pooh game so I'm happy to report that the thrifts are still good in Chicago!
  18. So I found a V-tech system with games and controllers for $5. That's gonna go up on CL. It wasn't a great day for gaming stuff, but check out the sign I found. It's from an arcade that closed down a few years ago here in Chicago, but the sign remained in place. I'd always looked at this sign and admired it, wondering what would eventually happen to it. I drove by today and it was gone. I figured it was probably bashed up or hauled off, but I knew that I'd regret it if I didn't at least cruise by the dumpsters. There it was, lovely and unbroken! Thanksfully it wasn't in its metal coke-bottle shaped frame otherwise, I'd never have gotten it home. As such I ran to a nearby UPS store and bought some packing tape and taped it to my car. Good thing I drive a beater. Drove home nice and slow, very pleased with what cost me $3 for the packing tape... I'm guessing that the sign could be as old as the 80's. Still no match for the other arcade sign I also found - this one is more of an old CHicago arcade institution because it's just so damned bizzarre... Now I guess I just need to change my name to Dennis and open my own arcade. Or maybe I'll just open a snack bar in my building's laundry room.
  19. True. I also have a theory I've been working on. Why are PS1's and Dreamcasts so cheap these days? Yeah, I've got a similar theory - the "two systems away" theory. This is based on parents making the decisions to throw things away. Last gen system goes in the kid's bedroom... parents are reluctanct to throw it away because they still remember how expensive it was. The gen before that is just junk. I've just started to see Xboxes & PS2's around thrifts, but at kooky prices. They're still last gen, so retain an artificial value. Stuff before that like PS1 & Dreamcast are pretty well worthless in people's eyes. Anything before that "must" be worth something to a collector... sellers have an exagerrated idea of what old stuff is worth based on Ebay stories and Antiques Roadshow. That's why you'll see Genesis games at $6.99 each at the Goodwill. I've found that the theory has held for years for me... of course the fun is finding the exceptions.
  20. How did you score all of that stuff? Chris My girlfriend's brother is moving, and is trying to keep things light. These are all systems that were dumped at his house over the years by his ne'er do well friends, and nobody plays 'em anymore. So I'm going to give them a scrub and do some trades. SNES consoles still seem to get around $35 somehow... sometimes more for the junior console. Would be great as I can use the scratch...
  21. Pitfall II - $1 Check out this box of free goodies someone dropped off to me: old PS1, Genesis, SNES, SNES jr. consoles (will need some deskanking) Resident Evil 3 Oddworld Metal Gear Solid Resident Evil Director's Cut Tomb Raider Tomb Radier III SNES - Donkey Kong Country some Speedy Gonzalez game Tony Hawk's Underground - tipbook
  22. Wow. Ms. Pac cab for $100... might be the ultimate find. Congratulations.
  23. Whew, thought you'd lost your mind there. Glad you got it. Let us know how it works. Lucky guy! Happy to report it works just fine. Actually it works better than the one I've already got, it's got a bum volume knob that I haven't investigated how to replace. Of course it has the buzzing problem, but now I'm willing to try to fix since I've got a backup unit in case I mess up. Supposed to be an easy mod tho... Oh, and I went back and got the N64 complete with 2 controllers and the jump pack installed. they gave me the set for $10, so good thing I went back!
  24. Guys... I said "psych"! Maybe you spelled it "sike" in high school? That was meant to say that I grabbed it immediately. For the $5 I'd save, I wouldn't miss out on a Vectrex. No way. I guess the N64 struck me as a bit high as they are around a LOT, but not hte clear ones. I think I paid that much for my Pokemon one. But now that I think of it the bundle also had the clear controllers which would be nice... so I think I'm getting in my car and going back right now. So to clarify, yes - I took the Vectrex home. I won't play the "psych" game again, okay?
  25. This it? http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12029 Looks neat, though it looks like it was designed for the cardboard figures that came with it. Though it might be neat to play it with the actual micronaut figures - still have some of mine somewhere. That's the very one. The instructions say that the board is designed to be played with actual figures, but can also be played with the cardboard pawns as well. I guess it's a little cross-marketing. Today was fantastic at the thrifts. I didn't buy the $15 Atari Junior or the dozen or so $2 commons. I did buy a Pitfall II for $2 as well as Mario Tennis for N64 for the same scratch. I also didn't pick up the transparent N64 for $15, though I may go back on half-price Monday as I don't have a good looking N64 yet. BUt here's the thrill... there was a $10 Vectrex there. So I guess I'll pick it up on half-price Monday. Psyche. Actually, I somehow missed it. My girlfriend is the one that saw it. I am clearly slipping if I can't see a friggin' Vectrex unobstructed on a shelf. It doesn't have a controller, but for $10 that's damned exciting. Never saw one in the wild before.
