The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
gulag picture radio replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I never saw the Supervision at retail either. I figure that it might have been a catalog item, a "superstore" kind of item (you know those stores that sell warehouses full of cheap knockoff crap), or like a gas station gift shop item. I'd love to hear more about where people may have seen these. I was just lamenting not too long ago that I miss Pac-Man breakfast cereal. I know that it was just a rip off of Lucky Charms, but I liked it back then. I even like the highly dorkwad commercials that encouraged kids everywhere to do the Pac-Man dance. I also really miss Cracker Jack cereal, but it's probably better that I didin't eat more breakfasts created by a dog food company. The world would also make me happy by bringing back Boo Berry, Franken Berry, and Fruit Beast... -
What machine is this????????

I wish that I had a Moog. I've got a couple old ARP's, and the other analog keyboard is an Akai AX-80. Still, I feel really excited about music again picking up these weird videogame synths. I just found an FM synth (sort of like the Yamaha DX-7) that plugs into the C64. Still haven't played it, since it's software is on cassette and I don't have the right drive for it. If you've got a spare Moog lying around, feel free to drop me a line. -
Look at the little guy!

Really less of a Game Boy, then right? Game Overarching Monster, perhaps? So what is this thing, a store display? Man, I'd love to have that in my apartment... -
NES top loader question.
gulag picture radio replied to YarsRevengeFan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The problem visually is not just the typical RF garbage, but every 8th vertical line is somewhat darker, resulting in this weird striped look on the TV. Not so bad in a really colorful game, but games like Metroid with large dark fields can look pretty dodgy. I've got one and am thinking of doing the direct output mod to it - I've seen some pretty elegant plans for the hack online. I'd hate to wreck it though. I prefer it vastly to the hideous and flakey NES box. that's just me though... -
my rummage sale find for a $1.00
gulag picture radio replied to baybgrlus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
They do actually sell for quite a bit on Ebay. Probably not as much as Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man since those are the titles people remember, but I can gurantee that you'll get more than a dollar for it. Probably like $30 depending on condition. -

Yeah, I got Intellivision II a couple years ago, and within the last year I found the computer add-on, the keyboard, and the synthesizer. I plan on using the Synth in a band setup as soon as I mod the Intellivision II for direct output, and I also need to do some customizing of the keyboard. what I really like is how lal the components match stylistically. Too bad they never made a white "modern" Intellivoice module. All I need is the Atari 2600 "system changer" and I'll feel really hooked up. -
Gameboy games (must haves across all systems)
gulag picture radio replied to RangerG's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I get a lot of funny looks for this, but I really like the Game Boy Camera. Ther are games, a paint program, and even a music program built into it. I think that it's amazing, and while it's only black and white, at this tiny resolution it doesn't matter. I love that you can incorporate your photos as part of the inbuilt games. There is a printer that prints your pictures onto tiny slips of thermal paper which I think is highly cool. You can also pick up accessory cables that let you copy the pictures to the PC and display them as GIF's. I've done this, but I used my Game Boy Flash Linker to pull the SRAM out of the camera and split it up into pictures on the PC. Awesome stuff. There is a GBA color "wormcam" I thik that it's called - it's a third party device. While it's cool and take better pictures, it doesn't have the playfulness and integration of the old camera. Best of all, the camera cart is really easy to find for around $15 used. It works great on the GBA due to the increased contrast of the screen. Ahh, some of my favorite pictures of Prague are ones I took with that camera. -

Veni (might be Venigraphics.com the more I think about it) does very low runs - forgot to mention that. I've had as few as 100 VHS boxes made and they were very cheap. I can't remember how much exactly, but they worked with me a lot. Seems like they're very interested in helping small-time guys like me look pretty big time. The video that I made the boxes for did end up being shown on PBS in New York, so *something* must have gotten them interested.

Anyone need a seemingly "dead" Sega Nomad?
gulag picture radio replied to Pooyan's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
I'm looking for just the LCD screen for the Nomad (mine is tres busted), so if any of you guys see a dead one, but the screen isn't in nasty shards, please let me know. Nice trade guys! -
There's an awesome place that we've used for printing low runs called Veni Printing. I want to say that they're in Minnesota someplace, they certainly have a nice webpage from what I recall. They gang run their stuff, meaning that the turnaround isn't absolutely the fastest, but their prices are awesome - and I've never had cause to complain about how long it took me to get stuff. I've used them for sell-sheets and other color stuff, but they also do VHS boxes (this is mostly what I've had done there) and other custom packaging. I think that may mean that they can die cut specialty stuff like an Atari box, but I don't know. What impresses me the most about them is how easy they have made it for me to work with them. When I've done stuff with local printers... even when I walk into and talk to people in person... it's always a big pain. No matter what I bring them (even finished films that I want printed) they always look at me like I've got two heads. Veni has on the other hand, been very complimentary towards me for actually knowing what I want. Let me recommend them highly, without sounding like I'm pimping them too much.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
gulag picture radio replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I found a couple of NES carts for $2.50... nothing remarkable enough for me to even remember, also a 4meg expansion pack for the N64 for .90, a Cybiko for $6 (hey, it plays games... right?) and the coolest thing is a Wataba SuperVision for $10. The SuperVision is a GameBoy clone, but it bends in the middle so you can play it on a tabletop. The single cart I got is about the same size as a Game Boy cart, but I doubt that they're compatible. It has the same kind of weird green LCD screen on it. Really, the only thing cool about it is that it looks like it's from Star Trek. I saw one last year at the Midwest Classic, and thought that it was really cool - though I'm sure the gameplay on it is less than stellar. I can't find any info about it on the net anywhere. Any leads? I also dug up 2600 Outlaw for $1 (a little steep if you asked me), an N64 adaptor for playing Japanese games for $4, and a Sega Saturn memory card for $15. I've heard some horror stories about usig non-Sega memory cards in the Saturn, and this one is by Interact. Hopefully it won't blow up my console, it's one of the few that I only have one of. And here it is... the weekend again. Good luck to us all as garage sale season rapidly approaches in the US. -
Look for lnks to Ben Heckendorn's VCSp (there is a recent forum item about him). ON his site he shows how to do his video mod to all models of atari - and he includes explicit pictures. Well... not explicit in the way one might think... I followed his directions for a video mod, and had it running in 20 minutes.

"stereo" is a bit of a misnomer. The Atari 2600 has two oscillators for sound, so each one would have its own speaker. I think that Video Olympics just happens to use the one oscillator for one side's beeps, and the other for the other. Therefore the beeps could seem to be related to the action onscreen. If you install speakers in the system (kinda cool idea actually), or mod the Atari to give you dual audio output, then the various sound effects come from one side or the other more or less randomly. Given how low the resources are in the Atari, real stereo output is kind of a lot to ask. At the same time, the recent homebrew Skeleton actually uses the two oscillators in a really intelligent way to do pseudo stereo stuff. Nice work! OF course Synthcart is where I learned all this stuff... still a brilliant concept. I can't say that enough.
-
Definitely. What Paul has squeezed out of the Atari unmodified is really amazing, and I give all props to his mad skills. (I feel so cool when I talk like that...) However I think that the Atari's output can only be improved with 'verb and EQ. When I did my little piece with Synthcart, I found myself tweaking almost every sound. I also learned that the pulse-type sounds that come out of the Atari can give a guy a monster headache on headphones in only a few minutes. Wow. Anyway, I ended up using a lot of different stuff including a vocoder and some other FX to beef up the Atari's already beefy sound. MP3's are the way to go so that we're hearing it the way that you are - don't have to worry about different speeds of emulators on different machines, etc. Lay it on us bro!
-
Amazing. Haven't run it on the real thing yet, but even on an emulator it's really amazing. I think that my favorite part is the color palette you chose. Instead of the usual primary colors, or the overwhlming blackness of original games, this has modern and hip color combos. Well done all around!
-
Yep. I signed up earlier today. I seem to be there under my old handle "blackhula". My soldering iron is ready... bring on the brilliance!
-
Per Paul's suggestion I tried Z26 a little bit ago. Cool sounding song. I still haven't tried running stuff on my Supercharger. Gotta do that because I'd like to hear your song on the real thing. Nice work! I still haven't had a chance to look at the sequencer kit because I haven't had the time to really study it - gotta set aside some time, as I am no programmer.
-
If you're so inclined, could you let the person that you got them from know that I'd be interested? Of course if this is some super-secret deal, I'll just keep my mouth shot and never ask again. Thanks, cpuwiz!

I couldn't find the yahoo group that you were speaking of at the top of this thread. Is it still active?
-
I tried using Stella for the song, and the tempo was very unsteady. Is there a better emulator for this music that I should be trying?
-
Wow. I think that I saw a bunch ofthose on Ebay once, and also wanted to frame them. Do you know if more are available? Are they the new runs, or are those from the 70's/80's? Nice.

I've used the DC to get online, and it's way cool. IN addition to gamesaves, it's the only way to find your own graphics to use as grafitti in "Jet Grind Radio". I created my own graphics and put them up on the web so that I could DL them to my VMU. It was really a pain because you can't use the regular browser to get the grafitti, you have to use the cut down browser on the Jet Grind CD, and it is very unkind about letting you navigate to whatever location your want. Another thing we used it for was actually for work. My girlfriend is webmistress at a not-for-profit and their website has to be mega accessible. That means it's got to remain usable with Lynx, the tools that blind people use to navigatge the web, etc. Since the DC has a very basic browser, we were also able to check how webTV compatible the site would be. Because of all of the other steps that she took, the site looked perfect on our living room TV and needed no modification. Now the DC is part of our website testing gear!

Seaman's free. Now what?
gulag picture radio replied to Brian R.'s topic in Modern Console Discussion
The walkthroughs that I've found give up way too soon. Many also make conclusions that are ultimately incorrect. I think that it's because people played the game by accelerating the DC clock, etc. and tried to burn through it. I'll hve to put it on soon and see what lies ahead for Seaman in the jungle, or if it's just pretty much done now. Since the jungle is where the credits are hidden, it would be pretty compelling evidence that it's more or less endgame - then again I wouldn't put it past the squirrley folks at Vivarium to put in a secret or two even at the end. -
I don't have the new game, as I am still fascinated with the DC one. I _just_ worked out how to get custom grafitti into the thing. Pretty funny to spray my company log and my avatar all of buildings in Tokto-to. I think that I'd be Beat. He's a good all around character with moderate to good skills in all areas. He also doesn't say "tight!" every time he makes a move... though I am also very interested in the character carrying the boombox. Still, I think that Beat is my guy... Has anyone seen the Game Boy Advance conversion? It's alleged to have a 3D engine so it resembles gameplay on ther Dreamcast. I can't believe it, nor have I seen screenshots...
