  1. Scored a Vader for $2.50 as well as a Micronauts board game for a buck. The game is crazy... it's on a couple different levels, and is designed to play with actual Micronaut figures.
  2. That Tomy pinball is actually a really good pinball. I have a 3/4 sized pinball game that's not nearly as much fun, despite having real pinball hardware in there. Congrats!
  3. Hiya. I just found an Intec LCD Screen that snaps on top of the Game Cube. It was only a couple bucks at the thrift, so seemed worth the risk. It's purple, and looks like it could be a pretty early model. Thing about it is that its got its own power supply jack. The newer Intec I have taps power from the Cube's psu, but this needs its own. It's a female power jack on a cable, but there's no indication of voltage or polarity. I'm guessing it's likely 12 vols as I think pretty much all LCD's are, but I don't want to fry it because of poor polarity. Any of you guys have this unit? It's got an AV input jack too BTW. Thanks for any help!
  4. Nice remote control Atari sticks! I have a set of those that I got from a surplus place in the 80's. Never worked tho... Today I have some nice gaming scores - first in a while. Game Cube snap-on monitor Indigo (though none of my cubes are that color) - $5 really old Realistic portable LCD watchman thing - $4 (I think we're going to see tons of these since the tuners are all analog) here's the biggie all for $15 - Atari 400 with chiclet keyboard - PSU, antenna switch 2x standard joysticks games - Galaxian (plus manual) Pac-Man Defender (plus manual) Missile Command K-razy Antics K-Star Patrol Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom Wizard of Wor (yellow cart - plus manual) Deluxe Invaders (yellow cart - plus manual) gorf (grey cart - plus manual) LaserActive demo CD shrinkwrapped - relax, it's just music! I left behind a Game Boy SP. It came in a little carrier thingy with five GBC games I didn't care about, all for $22. Seemed a little steep to me. I don't know what GBSP's go for these days. I just figure that it won't be long before I see tons of them for $3 at the thrifts.
  5. So yeah, Game Cube... I had a long gap in gaming, and it wasn't until a buddy got me a Dreamcast when they were $50 that I realized how slick and innovative some new games were. When the Cube was new, I was writing for an online magazine and Nintendo was trying very hard to get attention for the Cube so they gave me a nice silver one (back when that was a special color). I found a lot of innovative games, which was what got me to care about Nintendo at all. I'd had NES & such in my thrifted gaming collection, but never really understood those things that make Nintendo interesting as a company. The Cube is in my arcade cabinet now (along with a matching silver GB Player from Japan). I've also found a number of them at the thrift for a few bucks (all black for some reason), so those are the units I've put those vinyl skins onto. The one that kind of resembles an NES is esepcially nice! These days most of the Cube games that we're still trying to finish are playing via the Wii, but I still drag the Cubes places, and occasionally bust out some of my faves on the arcade cab. I also think that it was the most aesthetically pleasing of the last batch of consoles. Makes me nuts that you can't stack anything on top of the huge Xbox... BTW does anyone know how to boot a GBP without the disc? I have a special import disc that's supposed to boot the Japanese GBP that doesn't seem to work, and also several of my thrifted consoles didn't include the boot disc. Any ideas?
  6. It's like you're reading my mind. I usually check out the old systems to see if there's anything worth watching, and then use the drive for torrents or transporting data. Too bad external 3.5" enclosures haven't come down to under $10 yet...
  7. NES mario bros $1 (always good to have some of these around to bundle with systems) NES milon's secret castle $1 They had some Genesis games and even SMS Rockey that I would have gotten too, but they wanted $5 each. The NES games were "old as dirt" by their own word, but when I pointed out that the Genesis titles weren't much newer they didn't care. I also passed up a Genesis 1 + CD sidecar for $5 (have enough of those) and another CD sidecar for $3. I would have bought them for trade, but then I've gotta dig up AC adapters, etc... I missed out on a pair of TiVO units marked $3.50 each. Those are a great source for lockable 40 gig hard drives that are nec to put in an Xbox. I'm not too mad tho - I found an actual X-box tucked away on a shelf, also marked $3.50. This beats my prior record of $5... Cool 80's CD player - very tiny - Sony cdp-s27 - $5 Video processing unit by ADP - used to be in the old DAK catalog - $6 Troma's Edge TV DVD - $1 Another ool thing I left behind was some sort of Satelite TV converter box which Iv'e seen lots of before, but this had a toggle in the back maked "lock/unlock". Through the vents I could make out a little daughterboard, so I'm guessing that this was some kind of on the sly mod. Wonder what it was for...
  8. I would have jumped on that 3DO. it was a made by a couple different companies, the idea being that any manufacturer could license the spec. Didn't bring the price down though, as it was insanely expensive. It's also the last (or at least among the last) console not to have 3D chips built in. It still had to use visual "tricks" to convey 3D, so it has deep roots that way... to say nothing of the Amiga connection for those of us who still hold the Amiga so dear.
  9. I've only ever found 3 Nomads in 20 years of thrifting, and all three were busted in some way or the other. Better luck to all of you out there!
  10. PS1 - Tony Hawk 3 - 50 cents PS2 - Socom - $1.50 a DDR cheap rip-off - $1.50. Sometimes the cheap hardware's rendition of famous songs can be pretty funny....
  11. On eof my Xboxes has the Xecuter 3 in it (the others are all softmodded...). I actually don't use it for X-box games. I'm using Media Center a lot, as well as some homebrew and emulatr stuff. The X-box is great for that kind of thing. There used to be lots of aftermarket cases out there. Mostly clear and clear colors so you can add all kinds of crazy color effects inside. One company just made a front panel with a little LCD screen already molded in so it looks like official first-party gear. Like I said, it's just a couple lines of text backlit, but very cool when you're using the X-box as a music player - it'll display the title of the song. I think that it can do that while you're using the X-box for MAME and listening to music in the background. It's just cool. With this aftermarket stuff, there's a period where it gets to be really cheap, but then when supplies dwindle it goes up to "collectible" prices again. I'd like to grab one of these LCD's while I still can. I went to divineo.com, and couldn't find them. Any chance you'd care to send a link reaperman? I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
  12. Hiya. Before they disappear entirely, I'd like to pick up one of those little LCD's that bolt onto the front of a modded Xbox. It's for when you use Xbox Media Center, and it'll display song names, drive capacity, etc. I've got a green Halo Xbox, and just a few months ago I saw an online store selling the whole green front panel, with the LCD beautifully molded in like a first party thing. I've been looking all night, and I just can't find it. Any leads out there? Thanks!
  13. Cool on the VIS system! I remember the hubub when that thing came out. Everyone thought the future of multimedia was going to be in set-top CD-rom players. As limited as they are, I'd still love to find a CD-TV one of these days just to complete my Commodore collection... Today's finds: $3.50 for all: PS1 - monsters inc. PS1 - family card games PS2 - issue 102 DVD preview disc GC - Tony Hawk's Underground I also found a sealed TDK SA90 cassette tape. Don't know if you guys have noticed how much higher end blank tapes go for on Ebay, but it can be $5-10 for a single cro2 cassette sometimes. At some point, I'll sell off some lots of these sealed cassettes I've been finding and see what they go for. I guess it's not easy to find anything but regular bias cassettes these days? Or perhaps it's collectors picking up different variations of tapes? Or bands using old cassette 4 tracks that want that authentic crummy bedroom demo sound?
  14. Thanks for the plug. I hang out here too. Doesn't look like the forums are panning out too well tho, sadly. Glad you're liking the rest of the site - thanks!
  15. PS - Driver - $1 XBOX - The Thing - $1 NES - Superspike V'ball - .50 Genesis PSU - .25 PS - RF hookup - .25 The score today was three Nuon games. I was hoping that would mean that there was a Nuon at the thrift, but alas... so I don't have a unit to play these one, but when I do finally find one (I want one just for the CD player visualizations) I'll be ready. These were a buck a throw: Tempest 3000 Freefall 3050 AD Ballistic
  16. I'll be interested to hear of your results. There are a number of models of these projectors aimed at children. They're a little too low res for movies, and a bit dark since they're just using a desklamp style halogen (I think). But for retro gaming, he low res wouldn't seem to be a problem. Is there already a thread on AA about this projector?
  17. I haven't seen too many used PS2's, and most that I've see don't work. Of course there are piles as tall as a man at the local Game Stop stores, I just wonder when they will blow them out for $14.95 like they did with Dreamcasts (I stocked up when they had buy one get the second at half off!). I'd like to pick up at least one more for the few games that I'll use with it... Xboxes are so much more interesting because of their Media Center possibilities. As for the movies, I totally agree. Lots of these movies I'd never think to rent, and though I'm normally pretty insistent on seeing movies in Letterbox, for many of these flicks I'm only going to half pay attention anyway. When they're so cheap, it's hard to say no. I also pick up Laser Discs as they frequently show up in record bins for a quarter. I've found a ridiculous number that way, and those are often letterboxed, so it's kind of a win-win. After all I've got to have something to watch when all the TV's go kablooey tomorrow, right?
  18. PS2 fatty console - $12.50 25 beta movies - $4 (with movies I'd never have rented, but I'll probably watch now...) S-VHS deck - $4 Mitsubishi cassette deck with sliding drawer (tapes go in flat) $3
  19. Sounds like a great price to me! There are lots of really fun games for that system, even for non-ladies and non-children.
  20. Finally found something game related. Game Cube steering wheel for $1.50. No accelerator pedal (that hooks up through an accessory port), but it's a start. Last week my storage space was robbed, and they got a couple video game things (I'll be it was kids...) among them was a steering wheel controller - so this came in handy. I also scored an LD player for $5 along with a couple Chinese (I think) karaoke LD's. I'll be really interested if someone may actually buy them from me. Lots of karaoke bars still use laser disc. Best score was a box of 50+ CD's in their cases of a lot of early 90's music that I like. It was free! I guess someone ripped their collection, an then found out that the local used music place wasn't buying. Anyway this couldn't have been in the alley for more than 30 seconds, right? Also got a nice 3 head denon cassette deck. Only once before in my 20 year thrifting career have I found a 3 headed deck. I doner if I'll ever actually use it these days.
  21. Amen on the selling vintage audio gear for scratch. many is the time I've bought some 70's era solid state gear for $5, only to sell it for $50. I'm going to be getting back into that since work isn't keeping me as busy as I'd like. Musical instruments are also good for that. I once found a bass drum pedal in the trash (the beater was sticking out and I recognized it). It was all covered with wisps of carpet. I cleaned it up and offered it to a drummer buddy, and he said "dude, that's a hot pedal, you should sell it". I got $300 for it. Who knew that a pedal could be that desirable? As for my finds, I got a PSone for $3, but it doesn't work sadly. My other scores today were vintage audio, so I guess I'll just shut up about those.
  22. I'm in at around the $50 mark that we're talking about here. I know a couple other guys who would get in on one too. Feel free to put me down for a pre-order!
  23. "Demon Attack" kinda fell apart for me when I figured out that only the lowest demon shoots at you. The upper two are just there for decoration and points, but they don't post any threat. Now as an adult that makes me tire of the game pretty quickly. I'm having a hard time with the answers I'm seeing here... I agree with so many, and disagree with a lot too. I mean, who doesn't love Yar's Revenge?
  24. One more thing on the DVD vs. LD debate. Even though the DVD is compressed, it's encoded from a digital source. Because LD's use analog video in the mastering process, you'll get things like video noise and generational loss. A well authored DVD will pretty much always look better. You can see this especially in cartoons where there are large areas of a single color. On an LD, you'll see all kinds of video noise in that area, whereas on a DVD it'll be a nice solid color. The only potential benefit that LD has over DVD is in the area of sound. Some LD's have better mastered soundtracks that are uncompressed, so you'll hear a difference between the two. Though it goes against my grain, I would probably opt for DVD over LD if I were watching a movie that I really cared about (there's also the benefit of not having to flip the disc over several times during a feature film). I still like my LD player since I frequently find LD's mixed in with records at the thrift, so I can get movies for a quarter each instead of renting them for $3 for my DVD player.
  25. Not only is LaserDisc analog, it's also encoded in composite. So you'll want to compare and contrast the composite out of the player versus the s-video out. The s-video is good to use with an older television as the filtering on that output will help the apparent quality, but if you're connecting the unit to a newer TV the comb filter is already built into the composite input. Best gauge is your eyes. In this case, I'd probably stick with the S-video if the game output looks better using it. Great score, I'm insanely jealous. I have a whole ton of LD's that I'm going to be letting go of this summer (lots of dupes). I'm in Chicago. LMK if there's anything you're looking for, and whether it would be worth shipping them out to you. Congrats!
