The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
gulag picture radio replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wow. Congrats on those nomads. In my thrifting career, I've only ever found 2-3 Nomads, and none of them ever worked. i was just thinking about a half hour ago how much I'd like to have one, or maybe a CDX... Anyway, I had my own sort of luck: mini PSone with clear official controller - $3 clear green PS controller -.99 PS - Phantom Menace (as if the movie weren't bad enough - .99 PS - Driver - .99 PS - Ridge Racer - .99 Lightpen from a cash register. Don't know what I can do with it, but it was 99 cents. Kodak PhotoCD player - mini version. I still have lots of Photo CD's from the early 90's, this was new in the box. $4.50 Game Cube + GB Player - $7 TiVo - free in alley (I'll probably just rip out the hard drive) NetMD enabled MiniDisc player abandoned at my friend's work for 5 years - free with sealed blank MD's too. -
Are they still making official NES consoles?
gulag picture radio replied to GOTHCLAWZ's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Forgive me for not being super specific, but there is some new procedure out there for making consoles look like new. On these boards is a link to a guy who's a chemical engineer who figured out why consoles turn yellow, and more importantly how to reverse the effects. It's a mix of Hydrogen Peroxide & Oxyclean or something like that. It chemically reverts the plastic back to the original color without weakening the plastic the way that bleach does. A quick search should dig up the article. -

Bummer about not getting the AV wire, but you did well on the console itself. The black one is on the rare side. There was a matching controller too. Dreamcast is still one of my favorite consoles, so I hope that you have lots of fun with it! -

Hiya. Good day for PS1 & 2 for some reason. My fave thrift has had the same SNES carts for 2 months, so I wasn't expecting anything good. Anyway, this bundle was $7.50: Who Wants to be a Millionaire? - 2nd ed. Crash Bash Digimon 2 Tomba 2 Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone MVP Baseball 2002 (PS2 disc only) Bully (PS2 disc only) I also got a very deluxe looking box set of several seasons of 24 - it's a bootleg from China I think, but the packaging is lovely. Looks really official. That was $5, and the complete series of The Pretender was $3. Coo thing was that lots of stuff was half off, and the store is running a memorial Day sale - every $25 you spend gets you $10 off. I made out... They also have a lot of cassingles for some reason - and the songs seem to be way to recent to have cassingles of them existing. Odd. -
What system has the coolest looking carts?
gulag picture radio replied to eyg2181's topic in Classic Console Discussion
While utilitarian, I don't think that the typical Atari cart has much in the way of style. I guess that its rounded shape along with the rounded font on the spine is kind of appealing, and non gender specific, so it's successful that way. I like Activision cart's stacking feature for sure, and I like the Channel F for their very 70's look and feel. I can't go with NES just because of all of the wasted space inside - don't know why that bugs me so much. Also Odyssey 1 carts aren't really carts, but with all those exposed edge connectors they looked very 70's tech. All these random thoughts aside, I'll pick Colecovision. Lots of the same appeal as Atari carts, but it had the cool little compartment for storing those overlays. Though I have a feeling I could be pretty easily swayed another way... -
I've got a pair of the cream-colored Video Pinball consoles. OI used to have one hooked up to the TV until a few years back, it was pretty popular when friends came over. I've always wanted a Stunt Cycle, but have never seen one in the wild. Glad to see some Atari Video Music unit around! I've got a pair and they are brilliant. One is under my TV right this very minute. Gotta get around to finding someone to mod it for me.

So what are we looking at here? I can make out a SEGA logo - perhaps it's a multigame thing for hotels or something? -

Funny thing is that if you were reselling systems or just the games, Super Mario can often have more value than a more obscure title. There's a retro gaming store that I've done business with, and they always want SMB and will pay a good price for it. They said that when they sell an old system, everyone always wants SMB. Just a thought... -
So is this "newest film" the Atari movie?
gulag picture radio replied to Buyatari's topic in Auction Central
Yet I still doubt that the film industry will accept that times have changed and the tech that they used to be the gatekeepers of are available to pretty much anyone. Perhaps the next few years will show the film industry the value of operating lean, and that upstart independents + the internet can make an impact too. We'll see... -

Dreamcast console with 4x controllers & video hookup - $4.95 N64 wireless controllers (only one receiver, and I forgot to look for the battery covers, so they're useless...) - 1.50 and I got a "boompod" gaming chair from my local Target for $15 new. I'm not overly fond of the bucket seat gaming rockers with the built-in speakers. I was attracted to the boompod because it's really tiny, yet big enough for an adult to use. I also have a couple of retro themed appliances that are spherical, so this chair fits right in. Even at full price it's only $20, so it's a good deal for some additional impromptu seating. MY pet ferrets seem to love it too for some reason... -

The SMS is a much undervalued system. I was lucky and scored one of those deluxe sets with the 3D glasses & gun early on in my thrfting career. I've run into some cachets of games over the years, so was able to amass a nice collection for cheap. There are certainly some nice games there, and as you say using the nicer video cables makes a huge difference. Gotta find a way to mod mine for S-video out one of these days... -

Been a little dry around here lately, but it was nice to swing to my fave skanky thrift and pick up a bunch of 5200 for a quarter a throw: star raiders pac-man super breakout space invaders centipede football Sadly, I still don't have a 5200. I know that they suck, but it would still kinda cool to play on one. In 20 years of thrifting, I think that I've seen one - it was busted and tagged for $40. Yeesh. also found a Donkey Kong for the TI in one of those oddball flared cases - what did they only have stickers in the small size, and built the case around it? I also got a dreamcase memory card thrown in for nothin'... so nothing to complain about. -
Question - FB2 Portable?
gulag picture radio replied to Curt Vendel's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
You're telling me that those big solid blocks of color on an Atari 2600 game don't look saturated to anyone besides me? Has someone recently changed the meaning of "saturation"? -

Question - FB2 Portable?
gulag picture radio replied to Curt Vendel's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
The real question is whether they're aiming this as a mainstream product or as a collectible curiosity for people like us. I'd say that those price points put it outside of the impulse buy range... that's only $50-ish less than a DS, right? No matter how cool an Atari portable is, it's going to be tough to convince a regular person looking for a nostalgia kick that $70 or $90 is a good price. For guys like us, and for higher end markets than impulse buy, this can probably work. While so many of us have been juggling ROM's for years, most of the buyers for this thing probably haven't. they're used to the iTunes model too, so if the prices for downloaded games are reasonable, the could probably have some pretty good success in that are too. My desire for MP3 playback during games could open up deals for selling packs of music too maybe... -
Question - FB2 Portable?
gulag picture radio replied to Curt Vendel's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
Okay, here's a bit of additional news - I had to check and make sure it was cool to share this... Legacy has two models proposed depending on what investors choose to go with. The more advanced model would have TV out as well as an MP3 player. So the designs are there, it's just up to whatever investors they can scare up to make the choice. As far as playing downloaded roms, who knows? I would imagine that a big part of making money off of this unit will be charging for downloading games... but again - those are the sorts of things that investors discuss behind closed doors. I don't know if this is part of the plan, but it would rock if the MP3 players could play while you're gaming. Imagine setting up a playlist of your favorites 80's tunes to play in the background while you enjoy a bunch of Atari classics. I would also love S-video out since those super saturated colors in the typical Atari game would benefit from beter fidelity on today's screens. -
Question - FB2 Portable?
gulag picture radio replied to Curt Vendel's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
I believe that on a 32 meg card, you can have the entire Atari collection (including PAL and most variants) a couple times over. I think that when I filed my Cuttle Cart it worked out to something like 8 megs. -
Question - FB2 Portable?
gulag picture radio replied to Curt Vendel's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
Yipe! Sorry, man... sometimes these things slip through my fingers. As you saw, we cover a lot of ground, and people get grouchy if we spend too much time in any one area. That said, I'll definitely do something about MM. We've written about the homebrew scene before, but I'd like to give special attention to a few of these recent titles. I still think it's brilliant. -
