  1. Don't forget that the tuner will only be good for another couple of months! Actually I think there's an AV input on it so you can hook up a DTV tuner. Sounds like a really portable setup, eh? I found a pair of tuners not that long ago. I was a little more fortunate, I get 'em for five bucks for the pair. Not to rub it your face or anything. I'm just surprised that even at this late stage those tuners are out there. The Sega thing I _really_ want is a Nomad. I've found three of them in my thrifting career, but they each have something serious wrong with them. Sounds like I should combine 'em somehow into one good one.
  2. I love those games - Worms 2, Armageddon, and World Party are all excellent. I play the 3D version a lot: Worms 4: Mayhem. About the only PC game I play regularly. All your finds are great but that one stands out to me. I've never really done PC gaming. Not for any reason really... I keep thinking I'll get back to that Blade Runner game I bought like 10 years ago. I keep my Win95 machine around just to pull off the game save some time in the future. Glad to hear that you like some of those deals. I left behind a bunch of other PC games including a Grand Theft Auto box set that was incomplete. I miss our old Electronics Boutique that used to have remaindered sets of slightly older PC releases for next to nothing. Three year old games were going at ten bucks for five games. Thanks for the compliments!
  3. Nice day today, for such a friggin' frigid day in Chicago... NES punch out (non Tyson version) .75 tg16 - keith courage, victory run in cases .25 ea. (I haven't found TG16 in years, and NEVER with cases - these were mixed in with CD's) PC - worms 2, Lemmings Paintball -.25 ea. PC - Virtual Army Experience - free PS - Dragon Tales .25 Saturn - MK3, Baku Baku - both in a CD case for .25 Saturn in cases - Last Gladiators, Clockwork Knight, World Series Baseball - a buck each
  4. For sure thrift prices have gone up lately. Those places have hard costs that they have to recoup, and they know freaks like us will pay a buck and half (and often up to $5) for a 2600 game the way we used to be willing to pay a quarter. I must admit that when I started thrifting in high school in the 80's, I got into 2600 stuff because there was so much of it, and it was so cheap. In the early 90's I found NES games for a quarter too - I kind of thought that was the going rate The place I used to get all my best scores (late 80's to mid 90's) was a funny little shop about 45 minutes away, was only open twice a month during the work day, and was staffed entirely by old ladies. I would schedule classes around that! It was in an affluent suburb, so they always had really good stuff, and the old ladies always marked electronics really cheap. LP's were a dime, any sort of game cart was ten cents to a quarter, consoles were five bucks... they had a ton of great stuff all the time. I got a bang and olufsen turntable there for $2! Those days are gone, though I find really good deals at any of the giant thrifts around Chicago... the ones that sluice through lots of merch every week. They still seem to get a lot of old stuff, and the prices are really good. Sadly those little out of the way places all discovered Ebay, and even if they didn't there is an exaggerated sense of what this crap is worth.
  5. @AtariLeaf - thanks for the compliments. I'm just here to inspire folks to know that the deals are still out there. around here these are the salad days for Playstation and SNES for some reason. Oh, I forgot - I also got one of those NOAC 100-in-1 games that looks like a Dreamcast controller for $2. I also saw a new one - it's shaped like the Game Cube controller, but it's called "Game Sky" or something like that. They're tacky and fragile, but terribly fun!
  6. Again with the console fever: Dreamcast console complete - $5 Atari 7800 complete - $5 (I found 2 7800's in 20 years of thrifting, yet in the last month I've found two more!) Playstation games - .50 each Tetris Plus NFL GameDay 2000 (sealed) Pitfall 3D WWF Attitude Medal Of Honor Medal of Honor Underground Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Frogger Rage Racer Twisted Metal 4 sega 32X Metalhead in box - $1 (funny to value that higher than the PS1 games!) 2600 SUmmer Games, white label - .50 2600 Big Bird's Egg Catch - .50 Game Gear Crash Test Dummies - .50 Weird transparent (so I can see a popcorn seed stuck inside - eww!) PS1 memcard with an LCD readout - .50
  7. It was console craziness yesterday. Only one NES copy of Silent Service for a buck, but the deals on the consoles! Oy! Saturn console with controllers - $7 Genesis 3 - $2 N64 special Pokemon edition console - $5
  8. Went to a videogame trading party. Got a C64, C64C, floppy drive for $10 - also got a 1541-II (the smaller C64 floppy drive) for $7. Also traded for a PS2. I can finally play Katamari!
  9. Congrats on the Robocop game! Were you cleaning out a storage space or something? I just got an Amidar for $25. The cabinet's not in great shape (I'll have to rebuild the bottom somehow as the wood's all splintered), but it works. And a few months ago I got a Pac-Man Plus for cheap too. What's with the sudden availability of arcade cabs?
  10. Awesome find on that Coleco mini arcade! I was lucky enough to find a boxed Pac-Man years back, and it even had the oddball AC adapter that looks like fake batteries you snap into place. I think that it was $10-15 or so. Yesterday I got an Xbox console - $20... included some extreme inline skating game or other. It's destiny is to become another Media Center. If you haven't tried it, Xbox MEdia Center is the best...
  11. Ah... little bit better today. An SNES system (with controllers & AC & old NES controllers too) for $7, and all the following SNES for 75 cents each: Dracula The Jungle Book Wacky Sports Challenge I also scored a bunch of new in the box Epson ink (though I think I picked the wrong ones for my printer...), an 80's EQ for a stereo, and a 1970's sealed set of Marshall Brodien's TV Magic Cards (anyone from Chicago or the surrounding area will know exactly what I mean!)
  12. Very jealous of your PXL find. Actually the pixelvision camera is what started me on a thrifting career, though I didn't find one until maybe 2 years ago. I'm a film guy/artist, so I'd always wanted one. I even found a guy online who mods them and it's fantastic. they do go for a bunch of scratch on Ebay, but if you'fre looking to trade it for something, LMK. I'd love a backup. my finds today were SNES $1.50 ea. Biker Mice From mars Spider-Man Populous Ren & Stimpy Veediots! Bart's Nightmare also picked up a go-video dual VHS deck, Tomy's Run Yourself Ragged, and a VCR game that I've already forgotten the name of.
  13. Cool - thanks SO much! Actually I was also looking for the original Reef Store story. I haevn't been successful searching for that either. Any leads?
  14. Hi everybody. Tonight I was discussing Bira Bira and that whole legend with my buddy Paul. We each knew little bits and pieces of the legend - the reef store, etc. The thing is that the official Bira Bira page seems to be gone. I also searched usenet hoping to find the original details of how the legend goes. Can anyone here point me to a nice summary of the exciting mystery that so many of us hold close to our hearts? Here's the old link: http://birabira.chaosmagic.com and of course details of the hacked game: http://www.atariage.com/hack_page.html?Sys...ftwareHackID=25
  15. Picked up NES Baby Boomer for $5. A little steep, but a light gun game where you shoot at stuff trying to attack a baby? Had to have it.
  16. I got there later than you, and it was hopping! I think that when you were there, it must have been when everyone went out to grab chow. The show was one of the biggest yet, with more stuff for sale than ever. Very exciting stuff too, including some new hardware projects. I'll be reviewing one of them soon, it's an adapter for running PS2 controllers to Atari or C64. Great for creating new homebrew games that use the Guitar Hero controller or the dance pads. You're right about the signage. Maybe next year I'll throw my hat in the ring and help out with that.
  17. No biggie today: ps1: n2o Nitrous Oxide - 50 cents xbox: dance dance revolution ultramix 3 - 75 cents the cool thing is that I got a PowerPak NES flash cart. They sell 'em at retrousb.com, and they're amazingly hard to get. I got one, and it's magnificent from what I can tell. the beauty thing is that it's buying back a huge chunk of space for me - I can take a mess of NES that are littering the place and put them into storage. It's an expensive cart, but cheap compared to the real estate I'm getting back. I'll post a video review in the near future if you want to see.
  18. Got some scores at prices i don't remember since the early 90's! Classic Game Boy - 25 cents each: F-1 Race World Cup Bust A Move 2 FIFA Soccer 97 Blades Of Steel Chessmaster Daedalian Opus Donkey Kong Land III PS1 - $1 - N2O Nitrous Oxide GameGo - $6 - LCD monitor for car seat, power inverter... all I'm missing is the easy to replace AC plug-in thingy. Only thing is that I don't have kids and I don't drive anywhere far enough that anyone would want to drag along an Xbox to play games on. Robosapien - $6 Lego Mindstorms Dark Side Developers Kit - $2 Domino Rally glow-in-the-dark ghost themed - $2 (perfect for halloween!) Wish that I could find the old 70's board game called "Which Witch?". I loved that game as a kid, and it would be perfect for Halloween. Any trades out there?
  19. I have the bigger brother of this monitor for my editing work. These monitors are FANTASTIC. Even an older unit can have better focus than a regular CRT. I think that when I bought mine used it was still $500 or something. Congrats! What an awesome screen for gaming.
  20. Atari 7800 with odious controllers and AC - $8 (thrilled to finally have a backup!) N64 + Mario Party & Mario Kart + 2 controllers - $5 PS underground disc mags X2 - $3 PS1 games - $1.50 ea. The Bombing Islands Myst Riven Dreamcast - Hydro Thunder - $1.50 Millennium Falcon plug & play - $1 iMac + keyboard and mouse - $7.00 Mac Studio Display - $5 Pelican video switcher - $5 Massively heavy GF-800 Sharp 80's boombox with six band EQ - $5 1940's wood radio - gonna be gorgeous after TLC - $12 UltramanII cartoon on DVD (never seen this, and it looks a little bootleggy) - $1
  21. Coupla goodies: Odyssey 2 - 50 cents a throw: football out of this world/helicopter rescue baseball freedom fighters hockey/soccer bowling/basketball kc munchkin alien invaders plus cosmic conflict speedway/spin-out/crypto-logic conquest of the world invaders from hyperspace pick axe pete sid the spellbinder ufo attack of the timelord PS1 - 1.25 each command & conquer - red alert retaliation tenchu oddworld gta 2 vigilante 8 tomb raider II jeopardy rainbow 6 pool hustler star wars - masters of teras kasi risk jet moto twisted metal 2 Colecovision - $2 roc n' rope slither omega race victory cabbage patch kids tomarc the barbarian
  22. Hey Jetblue, is that a Chase The Chuckwagon in the bottommost bag? If so, I bow deeply from the waist. Wow. Those finds are still out there!
  23. Is the hard drive for anything besides the game it was bundled with? Can it be used to store games or MP3's or something cool like that?
  24. The Salvation Army really came through for me this week... Game Cube "MC Groovs" DDR clone for a buck (I have a Cube dance pad from a while back for 50 cents) Wiimote sealed - $10 But the find of the week must be an Amidar arcade cabinet for $25! I wrote about it at my website here: http://www.retrothing.com/2008/08/its-pretty-clea.html
  25. A few days ago, I mentioned having found a PS2 for $7, but it was experiencing lots of read errors. The consensus here was that it needed a good cleaning, which I did and it worked! For a bit. The deal is that games boot up, but while you're playing, the PS2 will shut down with a blinking red power light. any ideas? When I was looking for repair advice online, I found people mention re-aligning the laser. Could that be part of my problem? Thanks for any advice. I'm just dying to play Katamari...
