I haven't tried it yet, but I know people who de-yellow plastics by using acrylic visor polish. This is the stuff that they use on motorcycle helmet visors, and it's a mild mild abrasive. It takes a lot of elbow grease, but it does work. The stuff would be shaving some micrometers off of the top of the SNES, but t _should_ get the yellow off, and reveal a fresh new SNES. I think. Is that enough "I'm not responsible for what happens to your SNES" qualifications for you? -
Do you primarily buy your "modern" games new or used?

Pretty much always used, though some of the non-game Nintendo titles have been affordable enough not to wait. I got Wii Endless Ocean & DS Electroplankton & DS Jam Session right when they came out. For the most part I don't care about getting stuff new, as long as the used copy has a manual and is in decent shape. I'm so far behind on old Game Cube games that I've got plenty of time to wait until the Wii stuff gets cheaper. I did wait for more than a year for Smooth Moves to drop in price since it was a launch title - the used copies still are barely a five dollar discount from the full price. I thought it would be reissued as a $20 game, but I finally gave up waiting and got it on Ebay for a song (along with a few more Wii launch titles). Having said that, there are a few WiiWare titles that I plan on getting as soon as they're available. The Strong Bad game is at the top of that list. Since it's going to come out in "episodes" every month, I want to be along for the ride as each new installment comes out. -

What's the "Game Brain"? I can only think of the Atari prototype system that was never sold in stores. Is it an LED game that I'm not remembering? Some nice scores over here today on half-price day: NES - $1.25 each, many with black sleeves shooting range american gladiators roadblasters bigfoot championship bowling lemmings godzilla jurassic park f-15 strike eagle twin eagle back to the future battle tank maniac mansion karate kid SNES Jurassic Park SNES power instinct I also found this oddball piece of "folk art" for $1.50 (it was half price day, after all!) -

Dreamcast is a very good emulator too, in addition to having a good homebrew scene. Surprisingly it's a great system for a retro fan. -

Damn! I've only ever seen two PS2's for sale at thrifts and such, and both were way broken. I'd like to find one someday, there are a few games out there I definitely want to take for a spin. I'm sure this summer will be the time to find PS2's at garage sales and such. I'm just now starting to see more Game Cubes around. Xboxes should be getting plentiful pretty soon too... -

Dreamcast system + controller - $5 Maxx plug & play - 80 cents high end Kodak slide projector - $10 (now I can project some Max Headroom slides I got from an ad agency!) -
I've done this more than once sadly... I see some thrilling looking PS1 games on half-price day (usually around $1.50 per game), snap 'em up, but forget to check the cases to see if there's a game disc in there. It's not like I'm out a lot of money, but yeesh do I feel stupid when that happens. There was also a time that I bought what I thought was some crazy import Saturn or PS1 game, and it turned out to be a VCD bootleg of some Chinese movie. I'll get around to watching it one of these days...

Parappa is my reason to keep a Playstation around! Love that game. The sequel "Um Jammer Lammy" is the same kind of game, but is a little easier in some requests - especially the "freestyling" aspect of the game. One thing that I found when I was running the Playstation in my arcade cab is that it's not a suitable "platform" for the game. Parappa really benefits from having all the controls under your fingers at all times. It's a more difficult game if you're slapping the buttons on a flat arcade control panel. There ya go... advice that will probably be of little help to anyone. -

The Dreamcast is an awesome system. Good for emulators & homebrews. I thikn that it's going to be the brains behind my MAME cabinet til I can get a computer in there. As for the PS1, there are some fun games for it, but you'd have to mod it to do a lot of the other fun stuff like run homebrews. At the thrifts I've been to, it seems like the salad days for PS1 games. They're easy to find for just a buck or two mixed in with CD's. I either play them in the arcade cabinet, or I have one of those little PSone's with the attached LCD TV. makes a lot of those crummy graphics look a lot better. Reselling the PS1 probably won't get you much these days. Either trade it to someone, or at least keep it as a CD player. There are people in the audiophile crowd who swear that an old Playstation is one of the best CD players out there. http://www.retrothing.com/2007/07/playstation-1-a.html -

VB's do go out of alignment when they're banged around. I never had to repair one... I always seemed to thrift a spare when one went bad. Worth a look. One thing that almost no one seems to talk about is that the VB has one of the nicest soundchips of the period. The games often have very nice music, and the close proximity to the speakers give you nice stereo fullness. Even if your VB is busted, the AC adapter is hard to find. Even a non-broken stand isn't terribly stable, so it sounds to me like you might have ended up ahead of the game. Oh, and I forgot one more thing on my list. I got a PS1 Mad Catz steering wheel & pedals etc. for $1.50. That's going to be rad. -

I bow down to Ghost Soldier. Makes me feel like I got ripped off for these $1 PS1 games. Family Feud NHL Powerplay '96 Agetec Bowling Caesar's Palace 2000 (come in a 2 disc box, but it's only bigger to fit a book on actual gambling) Disruptor (case only - I missed checking for the disc! Growl.) NES Chip & Dale Rescure Rangers - $1 Waco mechanical poker game from early 70's - $1.50 Wireless Recoton speakers (great for gaming on a video projector) - $12 They also had a ton of VCD movies among the CD's. For the uninitiated these are frequently low quality bootleg versions of movies pressed onto CD. They play in most DVD players, but aren't really worth more than the novelty of the insane Chinese covers. Buck a throw: Final Destination (thought it was a Playstation game... my eyes bust be going funny) Payback Star Wars Ep 1 (funny cover, rotten movie) Armageddon Deep Impact U.S. Marshals Tomorrow Never Dies Cheaper than renting them... -

Hiya! Did you get those buds from a brick & mortar store, or a web store? Thx. -
So why do they call the NES the "toaster"?
gulag picture radio replied to nester's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The top-loader is commonly called the toaster since the carts load in the top and stick out like toasty toast. I think that over time people have mistakenly started calling the front loader unit the Toaster. it's more like a pizza oven than anything else. -

Envious of the Sega CD ram cart. Took me years to find one of those. Found a whole pile of 260o & 7800 games - first in a long time. Wish I'd found the 7800 console too - it's one of the few consoles that I don't have a backup of. Here are the games I found all tied up in a sack for $4: 2600: summer games winter games pitfall skiing 7800: pole position II centipede food fight ms. pac man donkey kong ballbazer Video Arcade II (sears branded Atari 2800) + box - $10 MEGA+Power II - Famiclone (I'm pretty sure) shaped like a Genesis 2 - Even the box looks like the Genesis 2 box. $2 ... and just for fun: B&O turntable with hideously expensive $150 stylus in place - $10 Mickey Mouse Phone $10 (wish it were the rotary dial one) 50's erector set - $5 gigantic tub of Lego - $4 strange educational puppets + curriculum - $3 avocado green movie projector - $4 (wow -EVERYthing came in avocado!) -
I just modded my Xbox (after a long time of trying!), and I've got one weird thing. I want it to launch right into the Media Center, but I can't get that to work. The system boots up Avalaunch, and I can start XBMC as an app from within the file manager, and it works great. Does anyone know about how these dashboards work? Or what the Xbox is looking for when it boots? I'd love to sidestep the Avalaunch thing so I can really start using the Xbox as a media center. Heck, since it's so cool, I might just have to pick up another one! Thanks for any help!

Hey 5200, are you talking about the Gameboy kiosk that looks like a massive grey gameboy? Actually I've got one of those. PIcked it up for a $50 somewhere. It does still operate (I can't find the damned picture unfortunately...). The best part is that the gameboy is hardwired to a TV set for direct video output, and they put a greenish filter in front of the black and white TV to simulate the green screen on the original gameboy. It's a nice unit. Hopefully I'll have room for it one of these days so it doesnt' have to languish in storage with my Dreamcast kiosk. This lynx unit is terribly sweet tho. The idea of having it set up for comlynx play right in the store is a smart one.

Hi there, A friend of mine overseas is looking for a new Game Boy SP - an AGS-101 (I believe that this is the second run of the clamshell GB with the brighter screen). He can't get them in his country, and was hoping that I could scare one up for him. He'd prefer black or a dark color. Are thre any of these around anywhere anymore? I called a dozen places, and turned up nothing. Any of you with a new boxed GB SP out there? Thanks!

The SMS is an underrated system. It doesn't have the classics of NES (and the graphics aren't as colorful a lot of times), but for RPG stuff and shooters it's great. I got the mega deluxe box a few years back that included the 3D glasses for about $15. I'm a 3D fan, so had to get it. The games aren't all winners, but I like a lot of them. The pack-in 3D Missile game was pretty awesome as recall. It's color too, so no need to worry about those Virtual Boy headaches! Oh and there's an easter egg game built into the console. Hope that you find it! -
-Ghostbusters - this was the holy sh*t game among my friends - we couldn't believe it was a 2600 game -Kaboom - OMG, how can anyone call this lame? It actually gets to be pretty zen at the higher levels - you really need to look through the bmobs falling if you expect to win. -Sky Jinks - got a lot of play in our house. Short of flying our own real airplanes, this was a close as we could get -Oink! - I played this game for the first time a few years ago, and fell in love. Maybe it's the underlying silliness of it, but this is a popular game at parties. -Freeway - also got a lot of play. It's all about playing it head-to-head. This is still popular around here. Okay, so now that I've stuck up for some of my faves, I guess that I'd have to say that Checkers isn't too hot. Not that I ever expected all that much. I know that it was a first wave game, and that they were likely playing it safe to generate the money that would lead to so many other classics later. It's just a funny choice of a game - paying $30 for a $2 checker game?
