  1. I don't really play any games using emualation, it's just not the same as real hardware. I haven't even turned my mame cab on in a year or more, and I wrote a couple of the drivers for it. I'd like to take the good things about emulation and combine them with the real hardware.

It almost certainly would not work with the adam. I haven't really looked at it but there's a lot more going on in the adam memory map. I don't remember if there's an expansion port on the adam or not.

  2. So basiclly this is a Cuttle Cart but instead of a cart it's on an expansion module, right?

What do you plan on using as the case?

As far as suggestions on what to add, how about the ability to store instructions on it like the Cuttle Cart?

As for the ram, could this be used to increase the size of ram, aka, like bank switching?

    Allan

Well it would store all of them, It would boot to a directory list. I don't really know much about the cuttle cart. The entire OS loads from cf so you can change anything you want.

I haven't really thought about a case. I like bare pcb's but then I come from an arcade background.

I'm thinking 2 32k banks that can be loaded either hi or low. I thought I'd use the file extension to decide how it loads. 1 32k hi for carts or 2 32k hi for banked or 1 hi 1 low for cart +custom bios. Ram's cheap, I can add as much as I need. Current version has 32k but I can stack another 32k on top of it.

  3. I'm working on a colecovision expansion module. It attaches a CF card. Right now it's basically just a hard drive controller with some extra ram. The hardware is pretty much done, but I have some more software to write. So far all I've written is test software to verify I can read and write to the drive and ram. The actual firmware is not much more complicated than my test software. The firmware will load an OS type software from a file on the CF. I haven't even started that part yet, but it's fairly simple and I don't foresee any problems.

I can still make small changes before I order more pcb's. Anyone have any ideas for other stuff to add as long as I'm doing it. For example I/O ports, LED's etc? Originally I planned on adding an alternate bios, but I'm going to just add more ram instead so you can load your own from the cf. Also anyone know anything about Adam software? Like what would it take to run adam games on a colecovision? Is it even worth the trouble? I had an Adam, still do, but I never did any serious programming on it, just typing. Also is anyone else interested in this? or is it just for me:)

    Thanks,

    Dave

  4. That's kind of to be expected, since AFAIK televisions have more "afterglow" than a monitor...bleeding the image from one frame to another.  But even via emulation, the sprites seem to be better defined when a black background is there rather than the blue one.

Yes, they're better defined against black. But that also means the flicker shows a little more. Less defined means the flicker is slightly less noticeable. My guess is they were desperate enough to do anything.

Ah...I see what you mean by that now. But if it's a case of noticable flicker vs. being able to see the sprites better, I vote the latter :D

I probably would also. Sounds like a decision the suits were involved in.

  6. A black background would have been more contrasting and made the flicker look worse. I don't think it's that bad of a game, considering. I remember at the time I wasn't disapointed, we didn't expect much back then.

  7. Hi Dav,

I noticed Japanese set1, which you called a bootleg, has corrected a bug related to Pac-Man movement (when he is going up). All the other ROM sets exhibit this bug (including the US versions), except puckman (harder?) (in fact it isn't), which seems to be a newer revision. So maybe set1 isn't a bootleg after all. What do you think?

    Eduardo

I hadn't noticed that. If it doesn't use mode 2 interupts I still say it's a bootleg. It's not unusual for there to be bootlegs of sets we don't have yet. One of the sets of pucman, I don't remember which, had different sized roms, but did use mode 2 so is likely a hack of some kind. It would be extremely odd for it to use some 2k and some 4k roms for the program roms. Last I looked none of the sets looked like valid pucman dump. Actual Pucman boards are exetremly rare in the US, and apparenly everywhere except Japan. Here they seem to be outnumbered by bootlegs hundreds to one. Until someone posted a picture on the arcade board I'd never even talked to anyone that had even seen a verified picture of one. So I wouldn't be suprised if all the dumps in mame are from bootleg boards.

  8. May I ask how, if at all, Pac-Man Plus is faring in the collection? Or was it scrapped in favor of Ms. Pac?

    Hi!

I haven't started work on that one yet. To be honest I still need to see if there will be space left in the cart to add PMP after PM and Ms PM. I am planning PMC as a 64KB cartridge, but so far the original PM has already taken 26KB, so... we will see.

    Eduardo

You probably already noticed this but in ms pac the second half of boot6 is garbage.

  9. Rallyx has scrolling, pacman hardware doesn't. The radar screen is a lot different than pacman as well.

2 games that really are the same as pacman hardware are Pengo and crush roller/Make Trax.

Anything in the galaxian or scramble driver that doesn't have scrolling is pretty close to pacman as well(except for the sound). Zig zag, devil fish, amidar etc. The only thing to watch for is galaxian/scramble can have more ram and a lot more sprites. They might fit you screen a little better too, since they're not as tall. I did a little experiment and got zigzag to run as bootleg mspacman with some rom mods.

  10. Found it?  Was it submitted to Mame.net?

They know more about it than I do.

Opcode: I'll send you a brief summary of the main code change. You'll be on your own on the text changes and graphics. The text changes should be obvious, changing ms pac to crazy otto. The graphics you should be able to do mostly from the pic. There's possibly 2 different pics. I saw one in people magazine that was seemed slightly different than the one Time pic Kev has on his site. But I don't know if it's available online anywhere, and I was too cheap to buy the issue in the store. I wish I had now, as it would be a big help.

Jerry Lawrence was working on a graphics hack for the arcade game, don't know how far along he is. I had the idea myself but didn't because it would make it nearly impossible to find the real set if one exists.

  11. I've seen some REALLY great hacks on this forum, but I'd love to see more of em in Cart format.

Maybe someone could release a yearly Multi-Cart of the top hacks?

Paying for software on a multicart would be cost prohibitive. I'd be willing to do a multicart of free hacks but I have no idea which ones would be, and it seems like a really big hassle to track down all of them.

  12. Yes, Crazy Otto is pretty much the same as Ms pac, even the intermissions. I've done a comparison of the code and iirc the only differences were a couple of bug fixes, the text, and a slight change to the ms pac display routine to make the otto graphic move slightly differently than ms pac. I have not seen the graphics data though.

  13. I use a small pickup. I tip the first one in on its back then get in the bed and stand it up and rotate it sideways. Then I slide the second in on it's back and strap them down.

If you have a minivan you can get one in by sliding it on it's side.

Of course some are bigger than others. You may want to measure first. I have to take my front door off the hingepins for the bigger ones. For the 6 player xmen I had to take the door jams off as well. That's a job best done when the wife is not home.

  14. I'm convinced. I have probably 50 pacman bootleg boards and none of them have a socket for the security chip at 5s. Some bootlegs do have a socket at 6p but they use a daughterboard in place of the security chip. And if that's not enough it looks like masked roms instead of eproms. Bootlegs always have eproms.

It's interesting they didn't snap it into 2 pieces, I would have thought the cocktail would be 2 piece for space. It pretty much is identical to the midway board except the ribbon cables are traces on the midway version.

I wonder if they started the serial numbers at 100,000? machine 482. Very nice find!

  15. If you look at mowermans page at the pac1/pac2 bootleg it should look similar to that. However it should have an extra socket on each board for the custom chips/daughterboard. Each board should probably look like half of the midway board, except it has twice as many eproms in row6 and row5. The pics I've seen that purported to be namco boards had 2 ribbon cables instead of 1 like the pac1/pac2.

  16. I've never seen one for sale and I watch for these things. I'd say it'd go for much, much more than 550. I've talked to several of the major guys that do pacman board repairs and they've never even seen the board.

Every one I've ever seen was a bootleg, I'd check it over very carefully, as bootleg pac cocktails don't sell so well, probably $200-$300 depending on how well made it was, monitor size, etc.
