  1. The problem is getting the logic out of the cpld. There's not enough pins to do everything you want to do.
  2. I like to use ram for banking like that in my projects for patches. Probably not very useful for atari though because of the limited ram. Usually I line up entry points but that can be a hassle if you've got a lot of code already locked in for different banks. I have a sub in bank 0 that I call from all other banks. So I have code in ram that looks like this. I just call the sub in ram. X is the bank number and is stored in the same spot in every bank. load current bank #X store later in code switch bank #0 call sub switch bank #X return
  3. I thought about dips, but hardware wise it doesn't really cost any extra to use a menu and it's pretty simple to write. I was able to get a scrolling menu working in one afternoon.
  4. Yes, I had such a critter on my webpage but the menu of course is specific to my hardware so it wouldn't do you much good w/o it. Accidental banking was a problem. At first I required 1 address from a range of 256 to be written to unlock the banking and any other would lock, but it still would do it exetremely rarely. I solved it by requiring the bank number to be 0 or 128 for menu banking to be possible.
  5. Yes, he would be better off trying to get his prices down than stealing the mame logo. $650 for an 8 game addon, yikes. That's too much for home use. My expericence with ops is they don't think the old stuff will work on location with a few exceptions, (ms pac and galaga) and namco has covered those two already. I wouldn't be suprised if ultracade filed for bankruptcy again soon.
  6. He's applied for trademarks for MAME and multiple arcade machine emulator both as well as the blue mame logo. You can see the application at http://www.uspto.gov/ and search the trademarks for arcade emulator.
  7. Yes, trademarks go to the first to use it and register it. He hasn' t used it though so he doesn't have much of a chance. If he'd uses the name for his product too we'd been hosed probably.
  8. And now this thread too. I'm not too worried about it. Steps are being taken and it's being handled by professionals now.
  9. Pretty cool, my space invaders almost worked
  10. Well, that's my baby exactly ! (the cab that is ) Is that a WIP or is it finished? (pics please!) Also, I see your going to use standard size pushbuttons (and joystick ?) Some guy told me about using scaled pushedbuttons and joystick. But uptil now I' didn't find any... It's WIP, I'm easily distracted. It will have full size controls. I'll take some more pics later. I took the measurements from my full size ms pac and divided by 2. Then added an inch to the width and depth at the bottom, but the top is the original 1/2 depth to make it easier to see the tv. A 13 tv fits very nicely. I took the chassis off the tv and rotated it backwards so the buttons are all on the back. There's a piece of plywood that slides in like a drawer. The tv is bolted to it just like the monitor would be in a larger machine. I'm using the ms pac/galaga/digdug/mappy toy instead of a board. I was hoping to tap into 5v on the tv to run the toy but it drops the voltage on the tv and the tv won't run so I need to find a 5v brick. Anyway all the electronics, joysticks, everything are on the slide in board so it's pretty easy to work on. Some of the cocktail cabs have pretty small sticks but I just picked up the cheapest I could find. Not sure if you can get real looking buttons that are scaled down. I'm going to have about $120 in this total.
  11. Propane torch to the back side then slam the board on your workbench and all the chips will fall out.
  12. If the second half is bad then you've messed up the highest address line. I seem to remember the online pinouts were wrong, ie the were for a 2k cart not a 4k cart. For 8k banking I think they just read it twice, you may have to read it in both directions up and down. There really is no good way to do it because it's going to bank while you read it, so you will have to manually fix it.
  13. www.widel.com scroll down to the bottom of the page. That's 50% scale with an extra inch added on.
  14. If you guys think missile command is hard you should try Super Missile Attack. I just added the real version of SMA to mame btw, came out in the last update.
  15. It is pretty easy. Here's a quote from the conversion faq for you. There's a lot more stuff about it if you google rec.games.video.arcade.collecting as it's a common solution, not just for external amp games but games that use bizarre voltages for their amps. - Unamplified output is a little tricker; it needs to be amplified before you'll hear anything. On an original game with unamplified sound (including most older Atari games, Universal's "Mr. Do" series of games, and many older Midway games), there was an audio amplification board somewhere in the cabinet that served this purpose. Odds are that you didn't get it when you got the game board, though, so you might have to build your own instead. - If you're going to try and run both types of audio in the same cabinet, you'll have to pay special attention to this issue, usually by putting an amplifier between the board and the speakers, activated when required by an external switch. - You can make a quick-n-dirty audio amplifier with an LM380 op-amp as follows: Put unamplified audio on one side of a 10K volume pot and the other side of the pot to GND. The center tap of the pot is connected to pin 2 (the input) of the LM380. Pins 7 and 3 of the LM380 go to GND. Connect pin 14 of the LM380 to +12V DC. (Don't forget an 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor between +12V DC and GND). Pin 8 of the LM380 (the output) gets a 2.7 ohm resistor in series with an 0.1uf cap to GND to prevent the chip from oscillating. Finally, stick the positive end of a 250 uF electrolytic capacitor to pin 8; the negative end of this capacitor goes to one of the speaker leads. The other speaker lead goes to GND. Power it up, and away you go!
  16. I can attest to the wait 5 minutes and discharge it again. The second zap wasn't enough to hurt me but it was enough to make me lose control of my arm. The one that was carying the tube. Fortunately I caught it with my other arm. You can make an amp for mr do, etc for a couple of bucks from an lm380 and some junk you probably already have. 2 caps and a resister iirc. Or you can cut the amp section out of another pcb. I've heard SF2 is good for this, so sf2 pcb's are good for more than just blank roms.
  17. I have successfully attached 2 4Meg emproms using a xilinx 9572 cpld. My design will handle 4 8Meg chips by stacking if I wanted. There really is almost no limit to how much memory you can add.
  18. It's only in the prototype roms. That's the programmers Ed Rotberg's head. "To find his head, start a game on medium difficulty... complete the first wave, then pick the upper right hand wave next. Shoot the blue crystal rocks until they turn into spinning heads."
  19. No, the roms are the same. The boards are the same. It's like pacman, the harness determines the table mode. I've told them how it works but I guess no one who understands is interested in fixing it. I don't have time to fix it myself. I still haven't finished the pacman changes I said I'd do a year ago.
  20. You're right I'd forgotten, they said it was missing a bezel and they'd had a replacement made. Still you'd have to put it on Ebay to get that much for it. Klov says there were only 3 or 4 left or something crazy like that. There was one at the de moine auction a couple of years ago that didn't make $200. I think the buyer did eventually sell it for $1000 on ebay but it took a _lot_ of relistings. I'm just glad I got mine for $35 or what ever it was I paid for it BTW, this was the ad I saw. Makes it sound like a good auction. --------------------------------------------------------------- This is the last of it! 21. The newspaper ad made it sound like a real auction, not super auction type consignment thing. I was actually wishing I could go somehow. They must have lost money on that one too, that's a lot of buybacks. And those weren't unreasonable bids, $600 for a death race with no artwork is pretty high unless the cab was just completely mint. They must not be advertising right if I knew about it in KC and you guys didn't.
  22. Yes, but at the time I was more bummed about missing out on the trip to atari and the chance to win the arcade game. I looked it up on google a while back and I found one reference to the contest. http://www.digitpress.com/archives/arc00069.htm
  23. There was a centipede high score contest. I won a 5200. Just missed the cutoff for the trip to the finals. It was kind of interesting. There were a lot of people that maxed out the score so they sent someone from Atari to all of our houses to have a timed runoff. There was a pacman high score contest at our state fair. I won a bunch of T shirts and a certificate. Iirc there was possibly a Dig Dug arcade machine for the winner. Can't remember now. I remember the machine being there and but I'm not sure if it was a prize or just a demo.
  24. The Jakks machines at the last auction I went to were just your average jamma cabs painted black. They had a nice looking marquee that said 5 in 1. There was black plexi for the bezel so you couldn't tell it was a tv. I'm not sure you could tell anyway if they took the case off. At first glance I didn't even notice they were different than the other 3in1's and 6in1's. When someone said something about it I went back to look a little closer and it was obvious the vertical games were horizontal. There's no way they can take coins so if someone bought one for location they were scammed. But these are mostly home buyers that buy these multigames anyway. The ops around here won't touch those 3in1 machines anyway. BTW there was an article on the net a few weeks ago about Namco busting an outfit for selling machines with the 3in1 etc boards in it. The last auction before christmas is supposed to be the big money maker for the year. That's why I'm a little concerned about it turning into a loser. We had ours Sunday, but I couldn't go so I don't know how it did. I'm trying to get away from selling games anyway, I do better selling replacement parts. BTW that reminds me if anyone needs Vram addressers or sync bus cards for pacman I have them 4 for $50.
  25. Its a small world it would seem, those 2 are the guys shipping my Warlords table from the US. Andy lives about an hour down the road from me, I bought a cab from the guy who shares his workshop, and another from his landlord.... Theres some serious inbreeding going on here or something, you lot are worse than the bikers... Do all you arcade guys know each other or what ? Is it a secret sect or something ??? Si Pretty much. I know Andy too. He dumped a board for me for the MAME project.
