  1. The manual says

To become a SPECTRA-WARRIOR you must survive all ninety nine

levels. Those who can go beyond all will receive their due

    recognition.

    Does something happen?

I think I made it through about 60 before I thought I was gonna have a seizure.

Of course this was 20+ years ago.

  2. I tried a search but couldn't find anything, and as a QA guy, this sorta interests me so forgive me if it's been discussed before

But how many games were shipped with known bugs that aren't a result of frying

I can only think of a few

Impossible Mission for the 7800 which hid objects you needed to solve the game behind objects you couldn't search, literally making it "impossible"

7800 Xevious would lock up once in a while if too much stuff was happening on screen

And the 2600 Pac-Man trick where you could pass through everything if you just repeatedly went in and out of the tunnel a bunch of times

I would consider the Space Invaders double shots thing as frying

And the ability to jump through Coily in Q-bert as more of a "feature" or system limitation

    Anything else?

  3. If I were to buy two 2600 homebrews right now, what would you recommend?

I was thinking Thrust and Man Goes Down

Are there any 5200 or 7800 home brews that I MUST own?

Simultaneous 2 player action is a big selling point but only if the gameplay is actually FUN

  4. Yeah maybe MAME has spoiled me as I don't think the 7800 version is quite right either. Maybe it's the sound.

Of course that's the 7800 game I probably play the most since the day I bought the system at original release.

MAME is nice but it's not practical for parties and hanging out playing some old games and knocking back a few beers. You don't wanna crowd around the PC

  5. Now that I have a sorta working system again, I played both of these again for the first time in a while.

The original Pac-Man is far superior in my opinion

Better animation, no ghost flicker and smoother overall gameplay

You'd think that Ms. Pac-Man which came LATER would be superior.

Was this another rush job or just bad/lazy programming?

Some of these games are far less than I remember them

Dig Dug was another one I expected to look and play better

But it doesn't quite look and feel "right"

  6. Well I'll try cleaning the stick and when it ends up in a pile of parts with my other sticks, I'll buy I gold stick :)

So a 5200 with Pac Man, Ms Pac-Man, Kangaroo, Dig Dug (2 copies) Realsports Football, Pole Position, Space Invaders, Centipede, Super Breakout, Joust and a half working stick isn't so bad right?

  7. I suppose I could look this up but I just got a 5200 from a guy and tried it out. The only game that seems to work is Dig Dug. The top left button is used for the pump. I tried Joust and Centipede and I can't fly and shoot. Do those games use a different button? It's been a while since I had a working controller so I don't know.

  8. Karate? Firefly?

I don't know if you guys are being serious or not but I meant from a gameplay standpoint and not a rarity standpoint

I'm not gonna pay for a crappy game just to say I have it. I stopped doing that a while ago when emulators became popular

I'm looking for good to great games, especially two player simultaneous

  9. Smurfs: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle (The best game ever made for any system past presant or future)

thank you! I'm here all week! Drive safely!

Anyone other than slappy white, stand up comic genius, wanna add their two cents?

I'm looking to increase my collection and wanna know what's worth hunting out and perhaps bidding on

BTW 'presant' is not a word

  10. Guy said the stick works perfectly, I'll see when I go there and test it out. If it's in reasonable shape I'll pick it up. The last time I saw a 5200 with working sticks was at some flea market and the guy wanted $75 with no games included

  11. Thanks, I have the link to the 5200 controller and 2600 paddle maintenance bookmarked for a rainy day. I read about the gold sticks but I thought you had to provide a stick for them to replace and it wasn't just a case of sending them $40 and getting a new stick in return. I'll take one more look at that.

  12. This may be a stupid question but would it be possible to build some sorta adapter that let you use a modern PC controller with a 5200? I'm uselsss with electronics so I don't know the first thing about it. My 5200 has been sitting for years because I took the controllers apart and now they're just a pile of parts.

  13. I have the opportunity to buy a 5200 with a few games (pac man dig dug and just a couple more) and one controller for $40

    is it worth it?

I have a working 5200 with no controllers and a pile of games.

  14. The one gripe about Boxing is that the guys move WAY too fast.

BTW, I just played it and what does the flashing bar mean?

Are you supposed to do something different to KO your opponent?

I just mash the button and push the stick towards my opponent the whole time until he falls. It's a bit too easy.

  15. Yar's Revenge is one of the most nerve racking games out there. The constant droning in the background and the changing swirl which can seemingly strike at any time makes for some edge of the seat playing at the higher levels.

You're supposed to be able to tell when the swirl will fire based on the Qotile color right?

I could never figure that pattern out, meaning I didn't care enough to pay attention

  16. Yup, we found it pretty early on in game play but never figured out how to get it 100% of the time until we read it in Atari Age magazine

Was quite annoying when you had a nice 2 player game going.

Being about 11 or 12 at the time, we didn't pay too much attention to the "warning" in the manual either
