  1. You're not the only one from Canada who dealt with this person. I too had a recent buying experience with him. He also charged me $10 handling fee however I was aware of the fact before I placed a bid and I did buy 4 items from him and asked him to combine them into one package. He obliged and did not charge me extra handling fee other then that $10. I am not too happy with this either but I had to buy these items and made a decision to pay the handling fee. I had however a feeling that he may get into hot water with his practice. Anyway, I am also a seller and I do ship to USA frequently. The shipping fee is not only the postage. It includes material cost (box, envelope, taping, printing shipping labels and invoices etc) and the not so tengible "inconvenience or labour" costs. I do charge slightly above the postage to cover those packaging expenses and time my shipments so that I can take as many orders to the post office at once as possible.. In my case it's usually between $3-5 extra and I think that's a fair proposition. There are a lot of sellers in eBay who list their items low to be competitive but inflate the handling charges to cover for their "loss". I guess people who want the item badly and want it now simply accept the fact and bid, this seems to encourage them to continue the practice. So IMHO one should read the auction pages very carefully before hitting that BUY IT NOW, or BID NOW button and ask questions beforehand. That way everybody will be happy at the end. And if you find the handling charges too high simply move on to other auctions. That's what I do anyway no matter how badly I want that particular item. By the way, your communication with him was very elegant, some people start right off with insults and that makes for a very unpleasant buying/selling experience. Hope you will have better luck next time. Ray
  2. Hmm, never thought of that. Yes I am running it with SpartaDos. Forgot all about that KEY OFF stuff. If my memory serves me, it disables the keyboard buffer, right? Should try that.
  3. Is your printer an Epson or a printer with cartridges with built-in chips. If so there may be hope for you. You can print with black only again if you reset the color cartridge(s) and make them look like they are full. There are chip resetters out there that do the job. The big ripoff with the inkjet technology (and particularly with Epson printers) is the requirement for cleaning the heads often. Every time you clean the heads the printer consumes expensive ink. If you don't clean them regularly and if you don't use your printer often the printheads will be clogged with dried ink and cleaning them so they perform like before will require several head cleaning cycles. This way your ink gets consumed very fast and often you don't get the same quality back. I have unclogged several Epson printers and took me days to bring them back from oblivion, a lot of people simply throw them away once they get clogged. My local second hand store has plenty of Epsons for a few dollars each looking for unaware customers :-)
  4. Hmmm, I didn't pay attention to the version but if I don't hold the OPTION key down when booting, it displays a message about memory and refuses to run, so I guess it's the XE version but I will double check that.
  5. hi guys, I am having some problems with this term program. It's the first time I am trying it out (never used it before). What happens is: It loads normally on my 130XE , displays the 80 column emulated screen and i can move through the menu items with my cursor keys. The problem happens when i select one of the menu items (by pressing the ENTER key) the program freezes and I have to RESET the Atari to recover. If I try one of the menu items again the same thing happens. Effectively I can't select any of the menu items. Also, I can go into the terminal screen OK and even connect to a BBS using APE Telnet but when I press Shift-ESC to go back to the main screen the program freezes again. I just couldn't figure out why this happens, any ideas ???? Thanks Ray
  6. With SpartaDos (3.2) just rename the file you want to autorun to AUTORUN.SYS For a BASIC program to run after boot just create a STARTUP.BAT file in the root directory of your disk with this in it: CAR RUN "Dx:YOURPGM.BAS" or CAR LOAD "Dx:YOURPGM.BAS" if you only want to load the basic program without running it. x: is your drive number (1-8 in SpartaDos) Ray
  7. Home Security System. Yup, several years ago, I wrote a home security monitoring program that would monitor door/window switches through the joystick ports and would make loud noise through the monitor/tv or an external siren if the windows opened while the program is on monitoring mode. If it was on Stanby Mode it would simply beep once or twice through the monitor. I used this system to monitor my basement windows where I had my recroom. I would normally play games or do whatever with the Atari during the day/evening then set it up with monitoring software to watch my windows during the night. I now have a built-in security system at my new home, so I am not using the Atari anymore. Other things I currently do with it: Explore games that are now freely available that I didn't have a chance to get my hands on at the time. Some programming with BASIC XL, Deep Blue "C", and Mac 65 from time to time, And of course testing the SIO2PC interfaces and other hardware that I am building for Ataris. Ray
  8. I have this up for grabs folks . Also we will soon be launching our website for SIO2PC (and 1050-2-PC in near future) sales. You will be able to completely customize your SIO2PC purchasing experience by specifying options such as: built-in SIO Cable (for External Plug & Play connectivity) Terminal Block (for External Connectivity with your own cut SIO Cable or for Internal Mounting) Enclosure with Power/Activity LED for External Connectivity Header Pins for flat ribbon cable connection (for internal mounting) Power/Activity LED option for Internal Interface (LED showing through the computer's case) Male or Female DB9 connector on board (For either Internal or External Connectivity) Male or Female DB9 connector on flat ribbon cable (For either Internal or External Connectivity) Male or Female DB25 connector on flat ribbon cable (For either Internal or External Connectivity) Hope to see you there soon. 9. Sorry to hear about your loss and frustration with the installation, even though Ataris are pretty tolerant to abuse, it sometimes takes one wrong move for the Oooops to happen. AtariMax SIO2PC is a 2 in 1 device (a SIO2PC and a 1050-2-PC combined in one unit), when it functions as a SIO2PC, it acts as a disk drive, when it functions as a 1050-2-PC it acts as an ATARI computer. Remember that a 1050 has the input/output (SIO 3 & 5) pins reversed, and pin 10 does not provide +5v (unlike the computer). Given the above, a 1050 uses SIO pin 3 as Data-out (Atari computer uses it as Data-In), and SIO pin 5 as Data-In (Atari computer uses it as Data-Out). So how does the AtariMax SIO2PC/ProSystem know what's connected to the interface? My guess is a special logic chip built in the interface that does the decision making and reverses the functionality of the pins as necessary. What are the SIO pinouts on the SIO2PC/ProSystem Interface? Your guess is as good as mine on this, as I am not familiar with Steve's hardware. It may be the same as an Atari's pin layout or maybe the same as a 1050's. Your best bet is probably to ask him before attempting a second installation. Good luck. Ray

  11. Eh, are you talking about a telnet client or a server? How could a telnet client be a security risk? This SyncTerm thing looks pretty neat, regardless. Does both Atari and Commodore special characters, how many terminal emulators can claim that? Also supports SSH, no security risks there (heh, I wonder if anyone's ever tried to implement an SSH server on an 8-bit machine?) Was being sarcastic (about the security risk). Like Vista asking for your permission after every button click unless you turn that damn option off. I know telnet isn't a risk, but am wondering why they have it disabled by default. Stephen Anderson Hi guys, Vista actually does not have a telnet client. MS did not include Hyperterminal with Vista, which was the default telnet client for XP. However you can simply copy Hyperterminal from an XP installation and it will work just like it did with XP. You can also download a free version of the Hyperterminal from Hilgraeve Inc.
