now hes doing a limited kung fu game and still, where's the qb? Why not finish what you started first, maybe? I think andie should allow copies of that kung fu game to be had by all the patient people waiting on QB, eh?

/me imitates the ol hamburger lady 'Where's the QB!'

  2. Yea, i discovered many 2600 games long after their 'sell-by' date as well, and many of later ones just amaze me. Hard to believe tapper, kung fu master, radar lock, etc are running on the same 2600 that pushed out the chunk with titles like street racer :-)

  3. /me hides his head and crawls into a dark corner in a shadow to play star ship and looks over his shoulder to make sure no one is watching.

Have any of you played it in two player simultaneous mode? I still find it's head to head aspect to be quite fun. I too like the sounds. I've never felt a simple game with good, basic gameplay was neccessarily bad. I still like pong and the original break out and the original night driver (etc) It takes more than bad graphics to turn me away.

  4. yea, it was a 'console' history you are correct, with some introductory computer stuff as a back history (since computers very much pre-date consoles :-) ) And wizardry certainley deserves many a mention for its first person perspective and the genre of rpg that it single-handedly invented. I own a CIB wiz 1 for the apple :-)

Yes, Dungeon Master is a glaring omission. Damn. There are bound to be some. I wrote that article quite a while ago. I told him it was a console rpg history, but he chose to title it differently, I noticed. I also strayed from the path on occassion. Daunting task a 'history of electronic rpgs' thingy :-)

I don't know what powers he has to edit it, but I will see...

  5. There is another thread regarding this, but imho the 2600 is my favorite version. I love the way it plays, and am still amazed by all the elements of the arcade game it contains, as well as the authenticity of it's sound and music. Many others prefer the NES and other versions, but I have played those versions and they are not as much fun as the 2600 version. But really, no matter what platform, it's a great arcade game, with a lot of actually good ports. Not something you can say very often :-)

      OUTER SPACE

I picked up Outer Space just the other day at a local gaming store here in Fayetteville. I was surprised at first because I don't normally see a lot of Sears picture labels anywhere, but plenty of text labels to go around. As I was contemplating my purchase I remembered that the Sears line of games usually are a direct copy of some already existing Atari title and I wasn't disappointed by that. In case you didn't know, Outer Space was programmed by Bob Whitehead who later went to work for Activision and made such games as Private Eye. Outer Space however is simply a repackage Star Ship from Atari.

This is a pretty sad game compared to the amazing things Bob did for Activision. You simply control a ship from the cockpit perspective and use your crosshairs to shoot enormous floating objects in space. The game has a similar feel to that of Star Master but not nearly as in-depth or creative.

Back to these floating objects, they appear to be oversized in that children's book way, as though we all have really small hands with little coordination and need things to be big and plush so we don't hurt ourselves. Anyway, the strange objects floating by are certainly odd indeed, I seem to remember a Star Trek style ship, a weird alien and some yellow flies buzzing around. It's all very subjective when trying to decide what everything is supposed to be but that's the law of the Atari 2600 anyway. So trying not to harp too much on that subject I will move on to another.

The game itself is very easy to play, just move the joystick, up down left or right, line up your floating object between the crosshairs and push the magic button to shoot. Unfortunately the lag time between when your lazer hits and when the item dies or explodes seems a bit too much and I had a hard time deciding if I was destroying something or If I was getting hurt somehow.

One of the only neat things about this game is that the objects floating in space get larger and larger the closer they get to the screen, it's worth it to watch them float right on up to you cockpit and smack the screen. Other then that, this game lasted about 5 minutes in my Atari and three of those minutes was spent trying to make the game work. One of reasons I wasn't too happy with the game is that I own Star Ship and have suffered this horrific ordeal once before. Bob made some great stuff later in his career so I can only guess that this was simply a warm up to the creative talent to follow.

REVIEW BY: DALE CRUM | ATARI 2600 VIDEO COMPUTER SYSTEM | DATE: 11.06.02'

Anyone who has actually played Star Ship knows there is a lot more to the game than 'game 1.' I really loved this game as a kid, and still enjoy it, especially with a second player. Here was response I emailed:

'As Star Ship is one of my all time favorite early atari 2600 games, I felt I should mention some grevious

omissions and demonstrations in your review that you barely played the game, and obviously, didn't have the manual :-)

If you had the manual, you would know there is MUCH more to Star Ship than just slowly floating through space shooting big things,

The first person game is best played solo as game number 4, with left difficulty set to A. You get attacked two at a time in this mode, and the speed is much more challenging. I remeber how impressed I was with the 'scaling' as a wee lad.

The two player competitve modes in this game are incredibly fun, with one player piloting, and the other trying not to get shot.

The other half of the game, and the part you failed to mention, is my favorite though. The second game in Star Ship is a Lunar Lander game, with the usual blocky graphics (the lunar module's control is excellent though,) It is very challenging on the most difficult setting solo, but once again, is incredible fun with two players simultaneously, where one player controls the module and the other player controls the moon, trying to dodge the lander. Great competitive fun.

I hope you can find it in your heart to update your review of this long overlooked early classic.

    KDK'

What do you think? Am I the only one who likes this old blocky game?

  7. wow, so if ebi pac is only 4k, and looks more like real pac than the hacked ms pac rom, making it 8k should give it plenty of room for intermissions.

For humors sake, I'd love to see ebi pesco hacked w/ the limitations of ol ugly atari pac heheeheee thats funny.

And, wow, talk about effecient!!! I had no idea those mazes were SO small! Amazing!...

  8. Does anyone know if this will ever be sold? It sure looked great in a video clip I saw.

One thing I've always been curious about, what with all the attempts for 'truer' to the arcade hacks/rewrites on the 2600, what about Intermissions? Ms Pac Man has 4 mazes, could the extra space from cutting 3 mazes be used to put the intermissions in?

And if ebi won't give us pac, how about hacking their pesco into a better version of pac & ms pac? Maybe add intermissions to both of em!

  9. Hmmm... Im most looking forward to the copy of thrust dc+ I paid for almost a year ago.

I'm also sill holding my breath for the pitfall inspired game Ed Federmeyer was going to follow up Edtris with, also wondering Bob Colbert will finish coding anything. And how about that homebrew with circular graphics that some guy took a bunch of payments for and (EVENTUALLY,) returned them.... I'm hoping someone hacks Stargate into Defender, alsol.

Amongst the new stuff, I can't WAIT to see Avcstech Challenge, I loved aztec challenge on my c64.

Cyclostar is based on cosmic ark, one of my all time faves, so its a good place to start :-)

and MAN I'd love to see 2600 Kickman.

I loved the Star Fire arcade game, so I hope the VCS version does it justice

And tree hugger deserves notice for its wide gameplay variety and tounge in cheek humor.

But I most look forward to any of the stuff that none of knew existed that pops up out of nowhere (like lords of the rings last year,)

  10. I too am a big fan of 3d in the video game realm, and have a sms 3d set, and all the us and brazil sms 3d games, the vectrex 3d imager, the famicom 3d glasses, the fm towns marty 3d glasses, the amiga 3d glasses (with space spuds, awesome 3d game,) of course the virtual boy :-)

There are some other interesting things of note: saturn/psx contra:legacy of war came w/ red/blue glasses, and a 3d mode. There were color magazines (even an issue of egm,) that used certain color combinations that somehow became 3d with its special glasses even though there were no dual images.

Also, Elsa's Relevator (old tnt 2 card,) had it's own proprietary 3d glasses for the pc, very nice quality.

The amiga also drives the 'virtuality' arcade systems which have a 3d display.

By far the coolest to me, is the glasses that came with super nintendo 'jim power.' The game itself is normal, but it never stops scrolling. And these glasses somehow translate movement and color depth into actual 3d (brighter/faster moving is close to the screen, darker, slower moving goes deep into the screen,) snes jim power has lots of layers of parrallax and the 3d effect is quite amazing, even though it is only drawing one screen. Any well lit/well drawn 3d fps also looks amazing as long as you are moving. once you stop moving your character the effect lessens greatly. It looks amazing with Halo and Jaguar AVP for example.

I saw every 3d movie I've seen mentioned here in the theatres (excapt comin at ya,) and one I didnt see mentioned, my favorite 3D movie of all time, 'Star Chaser: The Legend of Orin' Still have a poster from the video release on my ceiling at home :-)
