It was my understanding that there was new software that used .dsk files, not hfe?
With the HxC firmware you can use both in read & write mode.
-
Here are Beery's Kyroflux images and converted HFE files for the HFDC formatted floppy.
I've also attached how track 0 (side 0 and 1) look in the HxC track explorer view. Side 0 has 17 sectors in it, and side 1 looks a wee bit strange. Jeff will have to chime in.
I have fixed the KF Stream loader. this one was broken since a month.
The dump is fine :

But the bitrate is not quite 250000.

7.6us instead of 8us. And the lower part at 4us show something that look like an write compensation effect. unless the flux reversals on the disk are migrating...

Formatting by MDM5 (Myarc Disk Manager V):
... [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] FORMAT TRACK command 70, head = 0 [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] FORMAT TRACK command 70, head = 1 [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] FORMAT TRACK command 70, head = 0 [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] FORMAT TRACK command 70, head = 1 [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] WRITE SECTORS LOGICAL command b0, CHS=(0,0,1) [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] WRITE SECTORS LOGICAL command b0, CHS=(0,0,0) [:ioport:peb:slot8:hfdc:hdc9234] WRITE SECTORS LOGICAL command b0, CHS=(0,0,0)
This is the MAME log for the HDC9234 with active LOG_WRITE and LOG_FORMAT.
And this is the same software used by arcadeshopper ?
-
Just checked with the HDC specs: The dump indicates that there is no precompensation.
Well in this case still only 2 solutions to understand the problem :
- Raw Kryoflux stream files.
or
- an oscilloscope on the Write Data & Write Gate lines...

Yes I can format a real 1.44 disk on the controller I removed my real 1.44 from the system to plug in the lotherek
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
no, what i ask is : have you already tried to write files with this controller and the "lotharek" emulator on HD images ?
-
- The FDC write-precompensation setting is quite aggressive which make the pulses capture not working properly. Is there a way to change this parameter ?
According to the documentation it seems possible to change the write precompensation, at least for the hard disk. not sure for the floppy...
-
Here are the HDC9234 write pre-compensation possibilities :

If it is set at 600ns or 500ns during HD formating the flux capture will probably fail...
I can tweak the capture routines to make it work but i don't have this FDC here to test the modifications.
BTW is normal writing working fine on HD disk with this controller ?

http://ftp.whtech.com/datasheets%20and%20manuals/Hardware/Myarc/MYARC%20HFDC%20Manual%204th%20edition.pdf is the only docs I know of off the top of my head, michael prob has schematics if they aren't in there
Thanks. i don't see the schematic in this pdf.
I see 2 possibilities :
- The FDC write-precompensation setting is quite aggressive which make the pulses capture not working properly. Is there a way to change this parameter ?
Or
- The emulator is forced at 250kb/s (can be forced in the internal menu...)
-
Thanks. Everything look fine. So unless there is no flux coming from the FDC the image should be at least altered... You are formatting in HD mode ?
EDIT : It is altered and it is similar to the BeeryMiller image.
Is there a schematic of the HFDC available somewhere ?

no its the one after the failure, after the format routine wrote to all tracks then media errored
Then this is becoming odder : The image is not altered at all. Look like nothing was written to the image. Did you saw "WA" on the lcd during the formatting ?
-
Ok Jeff,
The HFDC is capable of a 1.44 format (not pc FAT obviously) so it uses the same drive hardware as a PC for that.. DS/HD 360rpm no?
How would you recommend I create a blank HFE image for formatting on this?
I created one with the PC 1.44 format, and this is the result after the HFDC attempting a GENEVE/HFDC 1.44 format on it(attached) It goes through each track in the format routine and then media errors immediately
Greg
The image look fine. i suppose that this is not the one coming from your sdcard/usb stick after the failure ?

Now when I say HD, I mean High Density 1.44 not hard drive images, just to be clear.
Yes me too. No HD images in the link pointed by acadiel.
-
No I posted the results earlier FAIL

Please share the failed HFE file.

I've been using the blank images from this thread:
http://atariage.com/forums/topic/228119-lotharek-sd-card-floppy-emulator-dsk1-replacement/?p=3176448
DSDD, DSSD, and SSSD are all 981K.
Jeff, can you please check those images first to make sure they are valid?
they look fine but please note that there is no HD images in this images.
-
I'm somewhat sorry that this caused so much ado, for I had thought this would be the easiest way to check the HFDC emulation. Let's hope that this clarifies things finally. Thanks to you all.
If this is for the HFDC emulation, it is maybe more interesting to format a true floppy disk and redump it with a kryoflux/scp board, isn't it ?
-
I tried a number of options. To my knowledge, and I can not swear to it, I thought I picked a DS/DD image and formatted it as DS/DD.
If it is an issue with the bitrate, then how would the Myarc FDC work with formatting the image while formatting the same image with the Myarc HFDC not?
Beery
I don't know, i know nothing about these controllers, but anyway take your HFE file and open it into the hxc software. you will see that the track viewer that there is no sector at all.
i suspect that the bitrate used by FDC is for 360 RPM drives, at 300kbits/s instead of 250kbits/s. You can anyway change/force the bitrate with the internal menu.
-
Michael,
Not sure what is going on yet, but I configured my Geneve with a Myarc HFDC. I tried formatting. The Lotharek stepped through both sides of all 40 tracks formatting. Then, when it went back to sector 0, the MDOS formatting routine gave me an error.
Not sure why yet.
Either way, here is the file formatted, but with no correct writes on sector 0. Not sure if this will help you or not.
Beery
Regarding what i can see in this HFE, i think that there is a bitrate mixup.
Please be aware that you can't change track density into the HFE : An DD HFE can't be changed to HD, a HD HFE can't be changed to DD or SD, etc. The track size is different at each density.
Do you know which bitrate is used with this controller ?

Hi all
I have an Atari 1024STE and recently picked up a Gotek floppy drive emulator with the HxC2001 firmware for it. Loader software is already installed on an 8GB USB key. The information I have found is confusing (by my standards), and I could use a beginner's primer to setting this thing up and using it correctly. I also have some copy-protected games, specifically Red Storm Rising and Gunship (and soon to add F15 Strike Eagle and Silent Service). Can I get these games on the emulator? The speed loading these programs, along with never having to insert another disk, is the main reason I got this thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Just copy ST files to the stick. select "000" and reset the computer to load the manager to assign the images in slots.
-
And re-formatting? Couldn't you use an existing DSDD image, then format it with the HFDC? How should the HxC notice that you are actually formatting the image and not just write a lot of sectors?
I don't have a HxC, so I'm relying on your experiences.
You can format an image on the HxC drive, at least since the Rev B hardware version.

The following images autoload and execute on their own without issue:TIScramble.dsk
Bouncey.dskThe following dsk images would not index. The indexer complained about I/O error 26 in 1802-Bad open Attribute(one or more OPEN option are illegal or do not match file caracteristics)6-Device error(device not connected,or is damaged. this error can occur during file processing if an accessory device is accidentally disconnected while the program is running)180 INPUT #1:DISKNAME$,ZERO,DISKSECTORS,FREESECTORSZombiev45.dsk
Freddy.dskWizardsDoom.dsk>> My Floppy disk controller does not support DD format so I cannot test any of those.WIZARDSDOOM.DSK and ZOMBIv45.dsk are DD images, so since your controller doesn't support DD format, the error message is normal.
About Freddy.dsk : Have you tried to convert it in HFE to see if you have the same error ?
-
The following dsk images I created using TIImageTool without format.Using Disk Manager 2 cartridge:I was able to format (initialize) these disks, copy a file to them and run the file (Indexer).
SSSD40.dsk (Single Sided Single Density 40-track dsk image) initialized as such
DSSD40.dsk (Single Sided Single Density 40-track dsk image) initialized as suchSSSD80.dsk (Single Sided Single Density 80-track dsk image) initialized as suchI was not able to initializeDSSD80.dsk (Double Sided Single Density 80-track dsk image) initialization attempted as such
Also - HxC reports this image as 40-track.First point : The boot sectors of these images are totally blank ! So the disk type is only based on the file size... The right disk format can't be detected in the DSSD80 case...
Please consider these images as broken...
You need to "format" them in TiimageTool to get the proper boot block.

Hey Jeff,
I read all the missing posts for me

i have not possibility to use my TI PEB with HxC still, but i hope in next days to be able.
the 28th of April i will have a public event here in Italy (Rome) with a TI99 exposition so i will have to prepare some stuff to bring with me and will update the new firmware too.
in the meantime hope that someone other have possibility to try them early.
really thanks for your efforts into this update anyway, also if for me was not a problem to convert .dsk to .hfe file i think that avoid this step is anyway useful.
Ciro
To avoid any confusion :
SD HxC != Gotek HxC.
The firmware i have released here is for the Gotek HxC !

I can only test gotek.
So this is perfect since this is the main subject of this thread and i have done the update for the HxC Gotek 3 weeks ago.
-
I don't see any issues being reported so I'm going to assume HxC is working great for those who choose to use DSk files on it (along with HFE).
No. For me : No feedback just mean that no nobody have tested it.
After 2/3 weeks i got here only one feedback with very few dsk tested... It seems that very few users are interested by this feature.
Why you don't test the new HxC firmware since you have asked me this support since some months ?

This firmware is quite old... Anyway about the Gotek- HxC all is there (files + updates) :
https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/HXCFEUSB_HFE_beta_firmware.zip
https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/index.html#stm32hxc

@jedimatt42 : Conversion to HFE is not needed anymore with the hxc firmware.
