    One of my colleagues says PHP was cobbled together by different people. I wonder if he's right? There seem to be inconsitencies.

      It wouldn't surprise me. I've tried reading PHP code, but it always seems to be a hopelessly messy and headache-inducing soup of HTML and PHP. I realize that it's possible to write good code and bad code in any language, but even "good" PHP code is usually a mess.
