Unquestionably, you are a Commodore 64 advocate, rather than an Atari 800 advocate. That's ok. That's definitely a viable position of advocacy. Yet here we are, at Atariage, while Lemon64 forum is missing you, so badly! They would certainly appreciate your viewpoint! Try it over there and see!

So the Indus is unreliable? Say it ain't so! I don't care. I still love it!
-
That sucks. I love the Indus GT drive, and I've never even tried the one that I have. Now I'm afraid to open it and try..... I thought these were reliable!

Oh, is THAT THE METRIC that we measure "worthwhile" threads by? Well, here's a real winner, then..... http://atariage.com/forums/topic/134852-atari-v-commodore/page-464?do=findComment&comment=1867475 There's a real winner, then, with 464 pages. Yeah, I participated, but I was wrong. But since that's the metric of success......

Gimme Gimmie!

You have degraded to the point of just trying to create controversy. I can't possibly conceive as to why. At one time, I thought you were a true Atari 8-bit Computer enthusiast. I like those folks!!! I try to be one, myself! However, you're just a shit-starter and shit-stirrer. If the 8-bit is "uninspiring,", then find another hobby. Please stop posting about something so "uninspiring."

Favorite Operating Systems of all time?
wood_jl replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
As we all know, Microsoft Windows always has been, and always will-be, flawed. That being said, I thought XP stood out in my mind as the most significant advancement. I mean, FINALLY, YOU WERE OUT OF .DLL HELL FROM EARLIER VERSIONS!!!! Yes I understand, Windows Haters, it's still Windows. But it was at least SOMEWHAT stable. It just kept out of the way and launched my programs. That's all I really wanted. Win98 was quite flawed, but I had a good run with that one, too. Windows 7 is as far as I have made it, and I suppose I like it for similarities to the past. I inherited a cheap (but mint condition) laptop. It had Vista. I hated Vista. I bought one of those cheap Windows 7 (with viable serial number for install) from Ebay, and I can't believe how much noticeably-better the slug is with 7. So, although my experience with Vista is quite limited, it must really suck and 7 is evidently much better! Notice, there's been little mention of Windows 8, 8.1 (what's the difference? avoided it all the same!!!!) and I haven't seen Windows 10 here, but I haven't tried it, so I'll reserve judgment. -
Is a vintage PC worth it these days?
wood_jl replied to coleco82's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Damn! You should write up a tutorial on this. I didn't even know you could still do this in 2017!! Awesome! -
It's always a bit of fun to look up an old Atari store from the heyday (thanks for at least that, Google Street View!!!), and see what's there now. So here's what at 2357 Coney Isand Ave in Brooklyn, NY now..... All those complaints about an overly-litigious society are just hogwash!!!!

I have had three 2600s and one 7800 modded by the nice fellow at..... http://electronicsentimentalities.com/ Now, I know he wasn't the cheapest, and I think he used the "Longhorn" mod, but he did exquisite work, and you got S-video. S-video still means a lot to me, on whatever classic consoles could produce it. I also liked how for an extra $10 (or so??) he would go through the rest of the console and correct quickly-fixed "common issues." I am quite satisfied with his work!!! However, I hadn't visited his site in a good while, and when I went back there just now...... How sad! I can't remember the fellow's name at the moment, only that he was a great guy to deal with, reliable as the day is long, and I thoroughly enjoy his work. Best wishes to his wife, to him, and the rest of the family. I would not hesitate to have him do more mods in the future, if he can.

I really like SIO2SD and Sdrive, BOTH!!! What can "Sdrive 2" do that "Sdrive" can not? Where is "Sdrive 2" for sale? Is this the ARM-processor one in the white 3D-printed case that you can't buy, because there's no reply to the thread??

The 8-bit Atari computer was much more inspiring than this thread, for which there seems to be no point, whatsoever.

Damn, I've been looking for that, for years!!!

Hakko FR300 arrived today. It just got here this afternoon, and I haven't tried it out yet. What a chunk of money!!! However, I think that for delicate desolder operations, I'll be satisfied if it works well. Reviews are very good. Perhaps a waste of money for someone with better skills, who could get by with cheaper equipment. But I have to say upon initial inspection: I love that [apparent] Japanese quality!! I think Hakko will be my next purchase for a soldering station (that I (again) won't know how to use, but will learn).

Oh, come now. He's done some impressive work in the [new-to-me] RastaConverter department. If you have suggestions on how to make improvements, cool! I'm quite fascinated with what I've seen. Perhaps you fellows should work cooperatively?

To answer the original question: No, the 8-bit is not uninspiring. In fact, the 8-bit is quite inspiring, indeed!!!

I'm just curious why they chose the 64C case, rather than the original. Since we're retro-folks, the original has more appeal to me. Although I thought that the Amiga 500 was the "blockbuster" edition of the Amiga, I thought it was the ugliest. Of course, the C128 and the C64C had similar styling. I'm primarily an Atari user, but I have (finally) come to like the C64. Is it common amongst "traditional" Commodore users to embrace the styling of the 64C, rather than the original? Just curious. I also wouldn't mind a 64C "just for the collection" and it looks like one can build a new one, with all the cool stuff (motherboards coming, cases on the market). I think that's cool, but I still prefer the original. I just thought more C= users would, too.

I remember that catalog from the old days, and I have one somewhere that I got on Ebay, years ago. Those A8 catalogs were gold! A scan wouldn't hurt. I don't have a good scanner set up right now, or I'd scan mine (if I could find it).

What vintage computer stuff have you purchased this week?
wood_jl replied to eightbit's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I thought you were a dyed-in-the-wool Commodore man. Yet you're running from the C64. Hell, even I enjoy the C64 on occasion. What gives? -
Is Java any benefit to programming for the 2600?
wood_jl replied to Fr0st's topic in 2600 Programming For Newbies
Where's the Java 2600 cross-compiler for PC?? Where are all the heroes and geniuses???? -
What is the future of flash memory for the Apple II series?
wood_jl replied to Keatah's topic in Apple II Computers
The fact that every batch sells out completely means that a costly and time-consuming redesign is not necessary for big sales. Therefore, I'd be surprised to see the investment made into a new design for "newer" media. CF cards are still all over Amazon and Ebay. -
Preference: Commodore 64 or 64C?
wood_jl replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
remo, you're light-years ahead of me ( and a shitload of others). Have you any info on this mod, even if only for mere observation for those who are too unsure/pussy to perform the mod? Need the info! -
B&C Computervisions (myatari on Ebay) sells PAL 130XE machines with and without the bad GTIA. Here's the one with the bad GTIA... http://www.ebay.com/itm/130XE-Atari-PAL-B-New-in-the-Box-but-No-PP-Manual-SN-Bad-GTIA-/141151722044

Still catching up with Atariage, but this is awesome, Bryan!
