Ha! Funny you should mention that! Remember, that was *actually* tried, but it was more like "A Cadillac with the body of an '82 Chevy Cavalier" (even worse than a '94) and it was an abysmal flop that almost killed Cadillac. It would have been a death that was almost deserved for making such a stupid marketing move. TIME 50 Worst Cars of All Time: 1982 Cadillac Cimarron -
When you buy games do you get the Standard or Limited\Deluxe release?
wood_jl replied to Shawn's topic in Poll Forum
It depends upon whether or not the GAME has extra levels or bonus GAME content. If so, I'm interested. If it's just a fancy box and juvenille toys, nope. -

It takes a lot of money to sue for nonsense. Perhaps they can use crowdfunding to raise the money, since it works out so well. -

I was just funnin'. It was just a parody. In a thread completely *dumping* (justifiably in my opinion) on the thing, all kinds of insinuation that they're scammers, the whole project being called a "joke," ultimate doom and imminent failure predicted, anticipated, and actively being counted-down blow-by-blow along with finger-pointing claims of schadenfreude, and amongst other jokes such as the Retro SH-IT video (posted in this thread here and here) - that I and probably 20 other people thought was hillarious - I was a little surprised that I crossed the line and smacked into the wall of melodrama. What liitle do I know; I don't set the standard(s) here, but I'm happy to abide by 'em so I deleted them. (But I was told it was quite funny.) If anybody wants a chuckle, send a PM. Good day to you all. Each and every one of you! -

I drove a borrowed Pinto (in the 80s) for a short time and it wasn't as bad as people think. I think the problems were rare. Now it's kind of a "classic" and it's V8-capable for modding. [sorry off-topic, just replying] -

Thank you, for permitting jokes. Are jokes really the problem? I wish I could share in your somberness, but I'll leave that part up to you. -

Granted I see things purely from a layman's perspective, but why would a retrogaming device really need a bunch of patents? I would think that "the next big thing in gaming" would justify patents, and this hyptothetical "thing" would be something like an incredibly-powerful yet affordable GPU (or beyond) that would kick butt all over what's out there, be necessarily patented, and then licensed out to hardware makers for the next-generation of cutting edge gaming hardware, be part of the next console or some whiz-bang video card, or something cool I don't even know about, and make the inventor wildly rich. That doesn't sound very "retro." But for retro-gaming? I think we retrogamers tend to way-overestimate the market for retrogaming. We tend to think it's going to be the next-big-thing. What's old is new again! From my experience, it's really just a small niche market. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nvidia (or whoever else) are going to be considerably more interested in next-gen stuff than ripping off niche market retro stuff; they're after the big bucks. The kids (who drop the big gaming bucks soon as they get it) I'm around a lot (college age) think the old stuff is mildly interesting, but *nothing* like a geezer like me thinks it's interesting. While I moved up to last-gen (PS3/XB360) last year and I'm still kind of impressed with it, they *couldn't wait* to dispose of their XB360s and get a Xbone or PS4. It's always going to be that way in the mainstream market. They toss their fancy cellphones for the latest, every 6 months. That's where the big bucks are always going to be. I would think that pretty much any retrogaming device is going to be a small market, and profit could possibly be made by going into it knowing it's always going to be comparatively low-volume and gearing up production to be low-cost/expectedly low-volume, however that's possible. Catering to this niche retro market - in ways that large, insensitive companies (i.e. Sony) could never do - would be the needle to thread for a small company (or entity or whatever) in pursuit of such an endeavor. The niche market tends to hang out in places like this forum, and other forums dedicated to similar interests. Wouldn't it be wise to listen to the desires of the niche market and create an affordable product that pleases the "hardcore?" Again, the kind of stuff that Sony would never do? Instead, go with some nebulous, half-baked idea (and so far, only an idea) and call some of the most cultivated people (I certainly am NOT talking about myself; I'm merely an observer) in your niche market with the best suggestions "haters" and "trolls?" I don't get it. -

Re: the "cartridge backlash" stuff earlier in the thread. I don't think anybody has any reason to resent cartridges; they just make zero economic sense now. They didn't make economic sense when the Nintendo 64 came out, either. Too time-consuming and expensive to manufacture. To risky. If a game flopped, warehouses were chock full of expensive but worthless hardware. If a game was a runaway hit, big-time shortages. At that time (1990s) it just couldn't compete with other guys' CDs which were cheap to manufacture droves of. If the CD game flopped, throwing away several 18-wheelers full of CDs was nothing compared to 18-wheelers full of N64 carts. It didn't make economic sense then, and with the move to digital distribution (ala Ouya or PSTV) with comparative *zero* media cost/risk, I just don't understand that choice? Can nostalgia truly blind economics? Personally, I love physical cartridges with my old systems (which serve my need for nostalgia), but how can they work economically now when they didn't in 1996? If the Retro VGS was turned into some sort of "Super Ouya" that downloaded new games and still played old games (through whatever means) and did everything the Ouya did (but better) and did everything the Retron 5 does, I think I'd want one. -

SOLD! Thanks for looking! -------------------------------------------- IF INTERESTED AND SENDING PM: (1) Please post a message here in the thread saying "PM sent on xxxxxxxxx." (2) Then send the PM. This will keep it straight who's interested in what, makes it easy to tell who's first, etc. Thanks! FREE U.S. SHIPPING and INSURANCE ONLY IN THE U.S.. You will have to sign for this. Would consider shipping to Canada, but it will be expensive and extra. For some reason the Post Office is a complete ripoff to Canada, lately. Sad. but true. I've bought too many of these things over the year. I am still keeping more than one of these in my collection, so these are just "overkill" extras. Only used to test. Like brand new, been sitting on the gaming shelf and not used. You should be familiar with the operation of the Atari 8-bit computer (Atari 400/800/XL/XE series), or this is probably not something you'd be interested in. (1) SIO2SD Micro. Bought here on AtariAge from AA user santosp, shipped from Greece. This is the smallest version of the SIO2SD I think I've ever seen. Custom case. Plastic still on the display. Including 2GB SD card (opened). Can't get these anymore, as they were part of a limited run, but closest thing is Lotharek's SIO2SD with optional case (functionally the same just a little larger) which is 72 Euro (approximately $81 as of right now) + shipping + SD card. Lotharek device sold here: http://lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=23 Looking for $60 with free shipping. (2) Sdrive NUXX. Bought here on AtariAge from AA user c0nsumer. This is one of the slickest, rarest, and most professional-looking SD card floppy emulators ever hung off the side on an Atari8. Was made in 2 runs, a rather expensive $150 sold out both times, SIO cable and SD card not included. Website for project here: https://nuxx.net/wiki/SDrive_NUXX I'm Including SIO cable and 2GB SD card (opened). Looking for $100 with free shipping.

I bought 2 of these things a couple years ago, and I've never even tried them. A friend from high school (who used to have an Apple II) expressed interest, so I bought one for him too (to be reimbursed, of course, and because they were always selling out) and one for me. Then he lost interest. Of course. Well, the Apple IIe I ordered from Ebay wouldn't even boot up on its own. As a result, I've never even tried either one of the two I own. As a matter of fact, I know almost nothing about them, other than people love 'em. I've never even opened the anti-static bags. I'm keeping one to eventually try myself, if I ever get a working Apple II or can get mine fixed. These sell new for $150. They're currently not available (they always sell out). There should be another run selling by the end of the year. Website here: http://dreher.net/?s=projects/CFforAppleII&c=projects/CFforAppleII/main.php I have the optional "remote" buttons, which cost an extra $20. So we're talking $170 plus shipping to get one when available. Would like to try to get $150 with free shipping for this and the optional remote. I've seen these go for more on Ebay but I hate using it and I just want my money back (or in part), so I'll try here first.

I had no idea who Uwe Boll is. Of course, I had to Google. Here's the first rant that came up. I've been schooled on Uwe Boll LOL. I wouldn't give money to watch a Uwe Boll-esque rant, but I must admit this was kind of funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT1J65KHX8E -

Flash media included (was ordered with each of the devices), but YOU WILL HAVE TO ROUND UP YOUR OWN SOFTWARE. It's not difficult. If you don't think you can do that, these devices are probably not something you're interested in. All of these are barely used. I never have these systems hooked up. Other than hooking up the systems to test and take screen shots, I couldn't remember the last time I'd used them, so not much. (1) NES PowerPak. Was $150 ($135 + $15 CF card) + shipping. I *think* you can add new mappers, add "save-state" functionality (save state in games that don't have a save feature/etc/) but I don't know anything about any of that stuff. All I did was try it out for a few minutes and see that it works. I'm always leery of updating something that functions. Looking for $110 for this. Pictures may enlarge a bit with a click. (2) Everdrive MD for Sega Genesis. Stoneage Gamer Deluxe Edition with case. I believe this is one of the earlier editions, don't know for sure. Current edition $120 + shipping. Plays most Master System games on Genesis, Master System reset button on cart. Looking for $80 for this. Pictures may enlarge a bit with a click. (last one (Hang-On) is a Master System game, hence 1985 date) (3) Super Everdrive for Super Nintendo. Stoneage Gamer Deluxe Edition with case and DSP Chip installed (plays Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, etc). I believe this is one of the earlier editions, don't know for sure. Current edition $150 + shipping. Looking for $100 for this. Pictures may enlarge a bit with a click.

Haven't logged in for a while....and WOW! This thread!!!! I wish I'd started on it earlier; 88 pages! Looks like I have some leisure-time reading to catch up. However, $2 million (almost) and talk of $3.8 million? $300 for a retro console? (I won't even give that for a PS4/Xbone that actually exists on store shelf (although secretly want them).) Product is still a nebulous imaginary figment? As Gomer Pyle says....... GOLLY! Best of luck to those involved! -
You bring up a good point, and in fact, even if it wasn't, it's still law on you site, as well it should be. I stand corrected, then, as well I should be. I respect the Amiga (and enjoy the one I bought from Amiga-Extraordinare AA user "save2600," so I'm not against the machine. Since using the actual Amiga isn't *anything* like using an Atari 8-bit (the user experience is no similar to using an A8 than is using an ST, and IBM, or a Mac), I see this "A8 Spiritual Successor" business as - while true-in-part, as completely overrated. To each his own. I've learned to really like the Amiga in recent years, but I'm just sick of Anti-ST crapping. The ST was a good machine at a good price at the time, which is why I presume you owned one. However, if I "attacked" other users (rather than simply disagree, which was my intent) then I apologize to those users. I like and respect both machines, and I simply maintain that the *original* 520ST/1040ST (not the TT, not the Falcon, and that later stuff) was a success. I'm sure others disagree. The Amiga was also a success. But one shouldn't have to be accused of attacking other users who disagree that the 520ST/1040ST was a success that saved the newly-formed Atari Corporation, because that's exactly what happened. Sure, after the Jaguar failed, "the inevitable" occurred, but in 1985-1987, the Atari ST was a bit of a success. I do apologize if it's "attacking" to point out this fact to someone who vehemently denies that fact. Because it's your site, if you disagree, then I'll have to agree with you that I'm wrong. I'll play ball. Looks like you won. Oh well. Please explain the pigeon thing, for a lack of a more coherent point. And now...HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMIGA!!! THE AMIGA RULES!! TRUE ATARI 8-BIT SUCCESSOR! ATARI ST SUCKS!!!! Now that we're all on the same page, let's move on, and I apologize for ever suggesting anything other than the former. Amiga Forever! Love my A500, and especially playing Electronic Arts "Archon" and "Dr. J and Larry Bird Play One on One" on the A500. I'm not making that up; those are a couple of my *actual* favourites on the Amiga, as next-gen versions of the A8 games they were based on. I suppose it's safe to talk about that, eh? Apologies to the management.

Floppy Days Podcast Discussion Thread
wood_jl replied to rkindig's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
While I appreciate your good spirit in your original version of the "Floppy Days" theme song, I have to admit that the Good Doctor is something of a Musical Maven. I say that as someone who IS NOT, but I'm able to recognize that. The Good Doctor is quite something, and I'm glad he participates in your top-notch podcast. Keep doing what you do!!! The only thing lacking is that you're not on Sirus-XM. Thanks to you for what you do, and thanks to the ANTIC team (which includes you) for finally making podcasts that are well-done enough to make me want to listen - and about such interesting subject matter. Take care, and thanks-again! -
**OR**, flag is as inappropriate for being in the Atari 8-bit section, which it is. "Happy Birthday Amiga" belongs in the dedicated Amiga sub-forum. Only a fucking idiot would argue otherwise. Yet such a person may take such a stance.... Strong 520ST sales saved the newly-formed Atari Corporation. Once again, most people who were alive and coherent at the time know this. Again, this will be chronicled in the upcoming book "Atari Corp" Business is War." You can argue with the authors then, rather than me. The Atari 520ST/1040ST were great successes for the Atari Corporation, period. Just because YOU didn't like them (and can't admit that you are w....w....wrrrr.....WRONG (Fonzie reference, there)) doesn't change that fact. Read about it in upcoming book that knows much more than you do. Totally irrelevant. Please name and enumerate these "half a dozen times," since you seem to feel you're a historian. Which six times are you talking about? But what's more, is that it's irrelevant to my point. I'm talking about the time period when the newly-launched 520ST literally saved Atari Corporation. After that, Atari *never* filed for bankruptcy. They reverse-mergered into JTS. They didn't file for bankruptcy. Get it right, if you're going to pretend to be able to. That is NOT FACT. That is, ahem, "Armchair Quarterbacking With 30 Years of Hindsight." It's a tactic that children - or adults intellectually less-enabled than children - frequently engage in, in these sorts of discussions. In the first place, strong 520ST sales saved the Atari Corporation from bankruptcy. That's just a fact that happened, and one that history has recorded. In THE SECOND PLACE, what "is inevitable" IS NOT apparent at any given moment of time. So "forestall the inevitable" is a completely-full-of-shit reference, for the time period of concern. Did you eat well, exercise, and take care of yourself, today? WHY? You're going to die anyway. Perhaps you saved yourself from inevitable death today, but you're going to die anyway. Therefore, should I laugh at your feeble attempts when I know you are going to die of cancer, anyway? "You're just delaying the inevitable." Well, it's not "the inevitable." It's history unfolding as it happens, with surprising ups and downs along the way. Oh yeah, you're clairvoyant. That's why you're so rich....HA HA HA!!!!! What the fuck are you talking about? The XL did some good (at least by the time 800XL rolled around), but only a complete idiot would even *suggest* that the XEGS had *anything* to do with "saving" the Atari computers. Everybody with a brain knows the XEGS was too-little-too-late and was just a nice gift for us collectors, nothingmore. I see that the original 520ST and shortly-thereafter, the original 1040ST kicked-ass in the marketplace, and gained Atari Corp some successs. The later machines, much less, period. But that's all I was claiming, the original machines' success. Duh! According to you, "I think" (whatever that means) it was "Jesus Christ Made Semi-conductor?" HA HA HA!!! Whatever, buddy!!! Slow down on that drinking and those blunts. You're bringing Jesus Christ into this? I'll just laugh at you for what you are......ridiculous! HEH! Tell me another! As well, the fact is lots of long-time Atari buyers/fans DID like the *original* Atari ST, and their opinion is just as valid as mine. Period. There's that weird pigeon fetish of yours, again. Please explain??? All the more curious, then, why you didn't post your "Happy Birthday" thread there, in the more-appropriate place, to begin with, then. Fine, but when I fire up my Amiga (which I do own), I don't hear SIO beeps. It doesn't run the same software. I can't really tell (upon using it) that it's any more (nor any less) related to my Atari8 than is a Sony Playstation, or anything else. Having observed that, why not then (in all fairness) start...... Happy Birthday Atari ST thread - in the Atari8 forum - for all those who went from A8 to ST???? Happy Birthday IBM PC thread - in the Atari8 forum - for all those who went from A8 to PC?????? Happy Birthday Macintosh thread - in the Atari8 forum - for all those who went from A8 to Macintosh???? Happy Birthday Commodore 64 thread (some made a lateral transition) - in the Atari8 forum - for all those who went from A8 to C64? Happy Birthday Kaypro II thread - in the Atari8 forum - for all those who went from A8 to Kaypro II????? I think I've made my point. Let's now move on. Let's use the appropriate sub-forums to advocate for whatever platform one wishes to advocate for. There' quite-simply no valid counter-argument to that common sense, which was my original point, to begin with. Sure we can, but we can also put Amiga advocacy in the Amiga forum, ST-bashing in the ST Forum, because they are there *specifically* for that purpose. Is there actually an a counter-argument to that truth?? Who is advocating system-bashing, other than brenski shitting on the ST? How about we just advocate for each system in the God-Given (or Albert-Given) appropriate section? So much to ask?????
