It appears that I may have taken an oath in a previous life that dictates I respond with "ssSnake" whenever the question of worst 2600 stinkers comes up... I really do understand why people hate Froggo Karate though... The fact that you can't tell whether or not you're actually effecting gameplay says a huge amount about that title. -

Thanks Curt. It's great to have an accurate historical account of how the design came about. It seems that it was more of a spec battle then actually giving gamers what they wanted. God knows that I had no idea how many directions the INTV pad could read at the time, but did know that the 5200 stick was super-akward for Pac Man and most other tradtional arcade games.

During that period there were many joysticks which didn't self-center (Mostly on computers), and it was viewed as having a value in its own right. The reasoning being that they could be used for plotting/graphics applications, or games like Missle Command and Qix. I personally hate non-self-centering sticks and had the misfortune of getting one with my first Apple II system in the early 80's. They especially suck with games like Pac Man as that it can be difficult to know when one has passed the center dead zone of the stick, making it more difficult to exactly time the wholesale direction changes demanded by such games.

This is NOT a machine one purchases to do pragmatic computer work. You would buy it because you WANT an Atari Falcon, not because you NEED one.

Ha! So the the theory now is that TakeTwo intends to acquire the DNF source code and rights to the franchise through a damages settlement and finish the game! Don't they understand all coding and development work took place on a violated ancient Indian burial ground and it will only bring a terrible fate upon those who meddle with it? Maybe they can hold some sort of digital exorcism involving cigars and a holy stripper...

I find it pretty amusing that plugging in an "A/V" cable made the system's power light go on. Perhaps it's possessed? The spirit of Pengo?

The point about points is not just that it makes everything appear cheaper, but also, it creates a divide/abstraction between real world money and Microsoft's online currency. If a game was labeled to cost "$9.99" instead of "800 Points" the buyer would be more likely to draw comparisons with real-world objects or services which he could buy for the same amount. -
What you want is called a "RF modulator" and Radio Shack should have them. Beware as that actual RCA-To-Coax adapters exist but are not for the purpose you want.

Can you imagine how hectic and unpleasant a game of arcade Robotron would get if all you had to control it was two little sticks on a tiny board? It sucks badly enough when you try and play it with a PlayStation-style dual-analog stick controller...

I love the fact that DNF's development time has exceeded the amount of time it took from Kennedy's challenge to the time man set foot on the moon. Some version of the game will have to get leaked now that the company is no more. The thing that gets me is that 3DRealms obviously COULD get games out the door as they actually did produce many other titles during this period, so what was so special about this project that made it near-impossible to bring to market

They probably had acquired so much debt that it didn't make sense to continue. Maybe the US Government should step in and continue DNF development...

Thought some of you might find think this pretty cool. Video from a game developers conference of a new game which uses innovative shadow casting to change-up the traditional platformer genre. Don't know what systems will be supported, but it's running on a current gen MacBook Pro in the vid.

Apparently, OLED built into glasses have an amazing range of contrast, color and luminance, and can refresh at a rate fast enough to to avoid making people sick. I personally feel that that or a system which directs laser beams into your eyes will be the nearest future of truly immersive VR. As for the deep future, if you can make it to around 2045, many well-qualified futurists have predicted that synchronized sub-atomic robots will be able to re-arrange matter on the fly. In addition to small side benefits, such as eternal life, one could actually "one-up" the HoloDeck concept in that the objects created would actually be real and could leave the "game".
