  1. Some comedy group did a prank at StarBucks where they sent in multiple people with full-blown 1990's style computer systems, big CRT monitors and all. They proceeded to plug them in, drink coffee and compute with no trouble from staff. I don't know what their official policy is, but they really don't seem to care what their patrons do so long as buying a StarBucks product is involved.
  2. It wasn't my first but I remember running 3D software which was written for a 68020 Mac in emulation on a PowerMac 6100. It had to emulate the FPU of the older machine, leading to truly glacial screen redraws of about 1 FPS, making it entirely useless but amusing to look back on.
  3. That's certainly cool, but I'm saving up my cash for a Recognizer or a Logic Probe! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcRwIH130fA
  4. I actually think the design of the gun itself is pretty cool and solid-looking. It's a shame that it has to be defaced with the clown nose object stuck to its barrel... Is this the ultimate PlayStation Move controller?
  5. Yeah, I think the super-slow boring aspect of GraveYard is part of it being an death's door, old lady simulator. Wouldn't GTA suck if your character was in his early 90s and moved as such?
  6. Basic Programming almost gave me an f'in heart attack...
  7. Here's another game which is FAR outside of traditional design ideas. The GraveYard Game Description- The Graveyard is a very short computer game designed by Auriea Harvey and Michal Samyn. You play an old lady who visits a graveyard. You walk around, sit on a bench and listen to a song. It's more like an explorable painting than an actual game. An experiment with realtime poetry, with storytelling without words. Anyone can try it! Note: Buying the full version of The Graveyard adds only one feature, the possibility of death. The full version of the game is exactly the same as the trial, except, every time you play she may die.
  8. Not to offend, but why are you over-analyzing gameplay mechanics in the abstract versus actually creating games and tweaking them until they feel "right"? Seems like a bit of veiled procrastination to me...
  9. Those look to be quite minty fresh though... Congrats!
  10. This is obviously a really minor point to most people, but I can actually provide an example where it could have been an issue. Several years ago I set up a mobile gaming system consisting of a Sony broadcast monitor mounted on a wheeled rack cart. multiple game consoles, a switcher, a powerstrip and some speakers sat below the monitor, attached with Velcro to equipment shelves. While I never intentionally rolled the thing around while anything was running, it could possibly have been an issue once in a gazillion years. Still nowhere near being a "big deal"... I miss my gaming cart...
  11. Do you not have prior experience with the Pac Man franchise being raped? Ever hear of Professor Pac Man? To me it's really something of note when they come out with a Pac Man game that delivers any of the original's value.
  12. They swapped in Daniel Craig as James Bond in a film shot before he was Bond? That's just crazy...
  13. It's only his ego which keeps Hozer putting those drooling heads of the mentally-challenged on every cart. I would be a lot more likely to buy one if they didn't sport that horrid mark, though that wouldn't be good for used game market.
  14. I would say the 4k, 8k difference could certainly be the case as that Atari also did that to increase profit on some major releases. It also goes in line with less experienced programmers as that it take far more skill to fit a good conversion into half the space.
  15. Like a new Neo-Geo? It have "Giga-Cartridges" costing $200+.
  16. I read a comment somewhere from the programmers who worked at Mattel (the Blue Sky Rangers) saying that experienced Intellivision programmers went to work at Imagic but NOT at Coleco, where they had to figure out everything themselves via reverse engineering. Donkey Kong is a perfect example of what kind of output can be expected from such a situation.
  17. I think the real issue is that these visual calls are being made by people who don't actually play these games for extended periods. Curse the corporate structure!
  18. The issue is that today's systems have enough power to handle full screen post processing, and are not using it sensibly. It can actually be used to really good effect, but like any other aesthic tool, it can also be used as an instrument of torture...
  19. You forget that the cheap laptop would be running an OS designed for mouse and keyboard input. Besides, the form factor is totally different, i.e, it's not a tablet. It all doesn't matter anyway. Different tools are better at different tasks. If what you're looking for is a laptop, get a laptop. There are no universal rights or wrongs in personel preference. (Until I come to power and become that horrible person that will force you all to ONLY use iPads for all computing...)
  20. Yeah, I was just joking about Sinistar and giving the kid coffee... Perhaps the /s was in order.
  21. it's my opinion that a major cause of the crash were the large numbers of low-quality games which flooded the market. Pac-Man was a HUGE disappointment for many as well and my have just sapped their enthusiasm for home gaming.
  22. Robotron and Sinistar are two great games which would help your child learn basic hand-eye coordination in a relaxed, playful environment. Speeding up her response time will probably be a concern if you're expecting her to delIver top-notch arcade scores at this age, but luckily there are now many sweet-tasting flavored coffees on the market which kids may find somewhat bearable if mixed with juice.
  23. I highly recommend both Doom and Quake cartridges (which both really push the 2600's capabilities). You should also check out the Channel F port of Crysis, which is truly mind-blowing.
  24. Too bad none of the original team is working on this. I really want to see a home version of H2Overdrive, which is the arcade sequel to HT that they made.
