  1. Pretty cool looking. I tried to play one of the web games, but there's no way I want to install some unity player.

     

    Is there any easy solution to making something for the iPhone?

     

    That's what I'm doing right now and my response to your question is- "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.... eh, NO."

     

    I don't mean to be rude but iPhone development even using Unity from a cold start would probably take over a year of concentrated effort. There are many hoops to jump through and device particular issues. My favorite part though is that you at least know the basic capabilities of your target platform, unlike developing for desktops.

     

    The web aspect of Unity is very cool but I would suggest most people would have fun making standalone apps for Mac and PC.


  2. On a platform with only downloads, this could be five bucks and would be worth it. I've read, however, that Nintendo demands up to $30 a copy for each game sold on its' platform (with some exceptions). That will keep medium and low quality games costing too much for a while yet.

    It's out on all platforms at the same price. So I don't know why you're calling out Nintendo...:ponder:

     

     

    I'm just using Nintendo as an example. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all do it. It won't last forever though...


  3. Hmmmm...you're right. I just downloaded and registered. Have you or anyone here used Unity? A couple of the guys at work use it to create interactive walkthrough of 3D exhibits and displays we design and build. I've looked into Unity in the past but it just looks so intimidating. I may actually look into it now though.

     

     

    It's actually my main dev tool right now and it's pretty amazing. Its primary language is a mutated version of Javascript but you can also code in C# or Boo. Games can be released and sold(!) as standalone apps for Mac or PC. (optional support for iPhone, Wii and soon XBox 360)

     

    It does not do asset creation however, so you should be handy with PhotoShop, audio editing, and a 3D app of your choosing (Maya is the most compatible but many are used.)

     

    The user community is second to none and filled with helpful people. If you want to make 3D games, I can think of no better option, and it's effin' free...

    Just thought all the game devs here would be interested in knowing that the excellent 3D/2D cross-platform game developing software unity has now become free (used to be $200 about 24 hours ago...)

     

    I've been using it for about two years now and love it. The editor runs on either Mac or PC and it can export standalone applications for either.

  5. One cool thing about AstroSmash (which was the Intellivision pack-in for a while), was that it was originally a bad rip-off of Asteroids. Fearing a lawsuit, Mattel had the programmer write a new game which was different enough to not land them in court, that was AstroSmash.

     

    Because the original game and AstroSmash both used the same graphics and were small enough, they are both actually on every AstroSmash cartridge. The Asteroids clone is able to be accessed only if a freak memory error occurs, similar to "frying" on the 2600. If someone knows another way to get at it, please let me know.


  6. The major issue I see here simply involves bad game design and designers trying to shove a square peg into a round hole in terms of game control. I personally feel that the best strategy is too play to the strengths of the target platform, versus attempting to turn it into something it is not. A good example would be the many iPhone games which have five or more virtual buttons on screen at all times, making them a hassle to play.


  7. Running Windows on a Mac is just like running it on a standard PC in that you install it from disc, ideally an official Windows disc. MicroSoft profits just the same and really would have no financial reason to try and stop it, which they couldn't anyway. Sucks that XP has to be installed on an internal drive BTW. Anyway around this?
