  1. Hmm, interesting. Well, I still need to get up the courage to order everything. Thinking I'll probably watch the rest of your videos before proceeding. I'll probably do a de-yellowing of the keys first anyhow. I did notice that the keyboards were different on the two models. My original one is the nicer one with springs under the keys, and the 'mylar that doesn't suck.' I haven't checked the mylar of the new one, but the top row keys actually have holes that go through the plating.

    Atari and their million variants...

  2. Almost 3 years later, and I've still not managed to install my CosmosEX... I kind of got distracted by other things. Fortunately, I documented what I did here, as I'd have no hope of remembering what I did otherwise! :$

BTW - does anyone know whether there have been any advances in outputting ST and STe graphics to LED screens since I've been away? I remember the picture being pretty bad, but at the time there wasn't a fix for that, and I don't have the space for a CRT monitor just for my STs

Ha, I have done the same thing, CosmosEx sitting in a box, still haven't figured out the cleast way to put it in one of my machines.

Sadly, you still basically need to track down a dying breed of VGA MultiSync VGA monitors, and they all work with varying success. Of the Three I own, the BenQ BL912 seems to have the nicest picture.

  3. I'm gonna try the Rapidus 800XL with the U1MB disconnected tonight to see what happens. In fact, if you have U1MB, the rebooting issue isn't such a pain since instead of putting Rapidus in "Classic" mode, you can disable Rapidus completely via software (using the Rapidus plugin in the U1MB BIOS) if you want to use the 6502.BTW: YT Channel has custom URL now: https://www.youtube.com/user/flashjazzcat

Nice, I ended up watching quite a bit of your videos last night. I think I want to try to clean up the video signal, then I will end up ordering the parts, though I will probably finish watching you put in the mods first.

Am I understanding right that the Adaptus is only required in an XL?

  4. So... I decided finally to start my 'kick ass Atari 8-bit' quest. For a long time, I was trying to decide which model to upgrade all the bits in, finally decided on the 130XE. Planning on doing the VBXE, Rapidus, and Ultimate 1MB (I don't think I'm missing any, am I?)

So got my secondary in today (would rather keep one original), but upon hooking it up I noticed some lines in the display (s-video), but then I notice there are finer lines in the other one I had (I'll post pictures of those after I put the systems back together).

    Upon taking them apart, here are the things I've noticed right away;

The SIO connector looks all sorts of crap compared to the other one.

The POT looks weird, though I'm assuming this really makes no difference, and I'm betting I could tweak this to see if I can get a cleaner picture on both.

GTIA on my original one is socketed, so this would be the one easier to mod, right?

The Capacitor near the power switch is looking like it needs replacement on the one I just got, should I stick with the same brand? Looks like it's a Nicon 470uf16v. The old one, I can't quite figure out what brand they are, oddly all the other capacitors are that same brand (they say WANG'S on them?). Almost looks like the power one was already replace, since it's the only Nicon one out of all of them.

    Thanks for any input.

  5. I have to wonder why no one has created a scandoubler fot the ST. 15khz monitors are fairly hard to find, from what I have seen, only BenQ makes new ones that support it. And of course not all of their new ones are multisync.

I now have three monitors that work, the Dell 2001FP w/speaker bar, NEC 1970NX, and BenQ BL912. The last one probably looks the nicest in Medium resolution and overall has more fine grain controls than the others. All look fine in ST high and Low. Sadly, due to these oddities, I end up using my TT030 and Falcon more often, because they just work over VGA.

  6. Awesome, always liked Time Pilot.

This makes me need to ask, is there a master list that gets updated of all the homebrew stuff? So many great games still being made for the Atari 8-bits, and I've been cleaning mine off and wanting to play them, and newer games would rock! (still waiting on Adventure II XE.)

Gonna have to give these a try when I get a chance. Also looks like I have a reason to upgrade at least one of my 8-bits.

  7.

    Hahah!!!

On a side note, there's several versions of the game on the PC too. I think there's a Syndicate Plus, which is basically the expansion pack and a few other add-ins. There's also Syndicate Wars, and then the new re-release from a few years ago.

There was a crappy FPS a few years ago with the Syndicate name. The one you want is called Satellite Reign, which is phenomenal.

  8. Gee, thanks for the spoiler. Appreciate that.

Ha, that was the ending on the Amiga version, I think other versions actually had different endings (no clue on the Jag). In fact I think the PS1 version had a completely different 'I beat the mission' video.

  9. This indeed. I have been digging into this game and IMO there is nothing about the Jagpad that makes this a deal breaker. And the game puts the keypad to excellent use. I can only imagine what playing the corresponding games are like on the 3do and PSX without the keypad.

The slowdown that shouldn't be there does get bad unfortunately.

From what I understood of the other console versions, they were sub-par hacked up ones that ended up to be quite different than the original, except for the Jaguar, which is almost a direct port from the Amiga. I beat the game on my friend's A500 a few years before the Jaguar came out. He'd fallen asleep, only to wake up to me yelling 'motherf***er!' because the ending video after the last mission was the same video as all of the other end of mission videos...

But I did beat it there. I should fire it up and give it a shot on the Jaguar again.

I will agree with Cannon Fodder being really difficult without a mouse, but I don't recall Syndicate being hard, just seemed to be a bit slower.

  10. Been many a year since i played it, but back when i had my Jaguar, i bought Syndicate the day the game came out, i wanted it that badly.Graphically it's fine, far better than the awful, cut down SNES/MD versions, the zoom function i never really used and to me it seemed pointless and yes the game is hampered somewhat by joypad control, but you can hardly blame Ocean for that.

It's a slow burner yes, plus some missions are bloody frustrating, but i stuck with it and got to the final mission, but never could complete it, just too much carnage going on.

I seem to recal were claims of an uncensored PC/Amiga version running in Bullfrog's offices back in the day, babies in prams on fire etc, ultra violent version of the game, but it could be memory playing tricks.

Syndicate wars on PS1 (never played PC version) was even better and i'd kill for a true follow up.Starbreeze's Syndicate on PC/PS3/360 was not a reboot, just used the bloody name.

Syndicate Wars is the real sequel. It's awesome, never did win it though, but the Cheat code... was 'pooslice' I can't make that up.... my brother and I still randomly say 'poo slice' to each other.

  11. I've bought a Dell 2100FP, NEC 1970NX and BenQ BL912.

Screen wise, I think the BenQ is the nicest of them (it actually has the most fine tuning controls as well), but the Dell is cool because A) it also has S-Video/Composite (wow the 8-bit looks epic on it with s-video) and B) you can buy speakers that mount to the front.

I currently run my TT030 with the BenQ, and with the ECL adapter, I have TT High as well. But the Best cable works with all three monitors, but it was much more than 18 (I think it was like 50?)

  12. There were several "glitches" that were known in a couple of the versions.

I remember in the ST version of Ultima III, you could kill a sea going monster

between the land and an island offshore, then leave the chest that dropped,

and use that as a bridge to go back and forth to the island.

I used to create "safe zones" with the chests, blocking entrances to hidden

places as well as encircling towns like Dawn, or just making a square fort

since the monsters couldn't cross the chests.

Also, you could sometimes create a male human ranger that would have

increased stats limits from another class.

Dang, makes me want to go back and play some more! :)

Ha, pretty sure that wasn't just the ST version, and just Ultima 3. Pretty sure I did that for the last bit in Ultima IV where you fight all the Daemons on the way to the Abyss.

That and the pirate ships in the other area nearby. Wow, that constant fighting of the Daemons was tough.... unless of course you hacked your characters :P

  13. I had always read that Battlesphere was 'inspired by' Star Raiders anyhow. Way back before it was released. Pretty much the reason I really wanted it. Though Atari could have went with Star Raiders 2000, to go along with the Defender, Tempest, Breakout, etc.

  14. There's actually a patch for Checkered Flag that greatly improves the TERRIBLE controls in it. THAT'S the stuff the makes me the most excited about ROM carts! I borrowed a Skunkboard once, but didn't know about the patch at the time. I'm looking forward to trying it on real hardware when this is released: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/179195-checkered-flag-controls/?do=findComment&comment=2240397

That's awesome! Now I know there are Doom mods floating around that let you play Doom II, but is there one that puts the music back in? A ton of reviews I've seen state that the Jaguar version of Doom is the best of any platform, except that it's missing the music.

  15. Ha, I think my copy of Checkered Flag is still in it's wrapper, or I may have played it once. I think I bought it just to fill out my collection (the Jaguar being the only platform I'm trying to collect them all, though I haven't started buying the ST to Jaguar carts yet, and am still on the fence about them (since I do have several STs if I really feel the need to play them, but some of them are awfully tempting...)

Someone else mentioned Power Drive Rally, which my cart seems to work if I very carefully put it into the slot, but don't push it down all the way (not sure if the contacts need cleaning (tried) or what the deal is. But it is one of my most played games on the system, that's for sure.
