What the STE should've been under the hood
leech replied to Lynxpro's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Agreed. Also I had read the same thing, though I could have sworn it was TOS itself that had issues with anything above a 68000, but then I'm seeing upgrades to 68020 projects for the Mega STE being mentioned on the forum, so I'm not sure if that's the case. We obviously know that 3.x and 4.x have support for 030s and higher. -
Thanks a lot for that page, it's rather useful. Do we have a list somewhere of pages that contain things like this, current projects (hardware/software) etc?

What the STE should've been under the hood
leech replied to Lynxpro's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Yeah, the TT030 should have been the 'in between' system from ST to Falcon. Atari's focus though was bounced around (same with Commodore) who both thought it'd be great to get (back for Atari) into video game consoles. Of course Commodore went back in time and slapped the Amiga chipset into a game console, which was sort of the original intentions. Unfortunately CD32 was banned from US sales, and the Jaguar simply had a lot of issues, lack of marketing, (hell I talked to people at the time and they'd actually ask me who Atari was, they were out of the game console business for so long, it was all Nintendo, Sega at the time), developers not finishing things on time, and / or the development tools were horrible (at least from what I'd read, PS3 sort of had the same issue, but Sony threw tons of money at that). I'd read stories of some development houses being given Jaguar Development kits, and then not even starting development on the popular game they had. Atari shot themselves in the foot by creating the Falcon, then basically ditching it less than a year later for the Jaguar, which they didn't have the marketing clout to be successful with. Not to mention everyone made fun of the whole 'Do the Math' ads. What would have been nice in a 'After Falcon years' would be a Jaguar based ST system. Would that be a SS (16-64 bit system, because of the various chips/buses in the Jag?) Ha, the Atari SS (not related to the Nazis in any way...) -
What the STE should've been under the hood

Atari at least had the foresight to put in a HD floppy drive in the TT030 (at least I think that was stock) I recall having to upgrade the MegaSTE to one though. My A4000D had one in it as well, though I don't know if that was added afterward (my guess is that it was). There were definitely a lot of short comings in the STE and AGA lines. Kind of funny that the STE tried to upgrade to where the Amiga already was (both graphical and audio) but because it was, as mentioned, not that big of an upgrade from the ST, it was never really taken advantage of. Probably why a lot of the initial games were written on the ST, and ported to the Amiga, while later on it was the other way around and the Amiga games became superior. If they'd released a 1040TT, that would have been pretty amazing in the 90/91 time frame and could have potentially saved the Atari computers. Oh well, it's always fun to dream of a different world where Atari and Commodore were still around. -
Need some diagnostic theories for a TT030.
leech replied to leech's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I have the Compaq P110 21" CRT that I connect to it. It supports up to [email protected] if I recall. I think at one point I'd found some old 19" black and white monitor (at the time it was super huge, since most monitors back then maxed out at 14") but I don't think it quite worked, and we ended up tossing it. TT high is 1280x960 (not sure refresh) but probably needs some trickery like the ST does to get a VGA monitor to switch between monochrome and color (I have one of Best Electronic's cables now for the other ST's, but since the TT doesn't have the normal ST monitor out, I can't use the cable there. That of course brings up the question of, why didn't the Mega STe also use VGA output? Crazy Atari was still trying to sell their own monitors or what?) -
What the STE should've been under the hood
leech replied to Lynxpro's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
My first ST was the Mega STe, and most games had to have the CPU clocked down to 8mhz (it also auto-booted at 8mhz, so unless you had a hard drive, or the disk had a standard TOS format, then you couldn't even really start a game in 16mhz). The point about the normal STEs having SIMMs was something I only learned in the last week or so. I had no idea, I thought the only ones to use SIMMs were the TT030 and the Mega STe! I remember upgrading to 4mb of RAM and then playing Ultima 6 out of a RAM disk. Load times were awesome! But I agree with everyone, the STe should have probably had the TT video modes at the very least. Instead they opted to upgrade the color palette, and add stereo sound. The worse part is, almost all the developers coded for the lowest common denominator, so it is a rarity to find software coded specifically for the STe, TT, Falcon. That's one thing Commodore got right, they somehow managed to get a good chunk of things written for AGA. Besides the Ishar series, I can't think of many games that were written using the enhanced features of STe/Falcon. Pretty sure if there had been some games coded for even the TT's resolutions, they would have looked amazing at the time. Granted the TT030 was never marketed at all as a games machine, and it was Atari's failed attempt at getting into the 'workstation' market. *sigh* I need to clean up my Mega STe's motherboard, stupid mice had their way with it, now I don't dare turn it on 'til I purge it... -

Woo hoo, replaced the reset switch in the ol' TT030, and now it boots up just fine to the desktop. Even the ancient 120mb scsi drive I had attached to it is working. How to trick it into using TT High resolution, I've never seen it work. -
ST games written back to floppy on PC
leech replied to Koji77's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Wouldn't that be the case of any 'real' floppy drive for a PC as well? 800KB for Atari STs and 880KB for the Amiga. Granted most of the 800KB ones would be non-TOS formatted games that did odd things anyhow, and would be hard to write to floppy. I mostly was thinking of just using the 1440kb one to put install disks on for the initial setup. But I do now have a NetUSBee and UltraSatan (which I ordered today and fortunately the NetUSBee wasn't sent yet so it'll be coming in one package ) on the way. Still need to get my 14mb ram upgrade and MiNT set up, then I want to start working on some software projects. I guess this topic really does call out Games, so yeah in that case, dd will potentially work on some, but not all of them. -
So, I am just getting back into the Atari scene after many moons, and having had my Amiga 4000D for a while, and online (the NetUSBee has been ordered) I'm wondering why there isn't really an Aminet for Atari computers. I see a few FTP sites still up, but nothing as extensive as Aminet, with a simple search and being able to split up what platform they are for, etc. I'm no wizard at such things, but I know someone who I could probably talk into building up an interface for such a thing, and we could try, as a community to build upon it with piles of open source software. If I could ever get fiber in my area, I'd even be willing to host it. But as it is, it's cheap enough anymore I wouldn't mind paying for some VPS somewhere to host it. Anyone interested in this?

ST games written back to floppy on PC
leech replied to Koji77's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I believe in another post somewhere I had read people were either using dd in Linux, or using some other raw image writer within Windows to do it. I'm stuck in the same boat, and I debated on ordering a UltraSatan the same time I was ordering the NetUSBee. Maybe I still can, not sure if Lotharek has sent out my order or not yet. Either that or I was thinking of getting an HxC Floppy emulator, but like the original poster, I think I'd miss the sounds of the floppy drive! -
LCD Monitor that supports ST Low Res! NEC MultiSync LCD 1970VX
leech replied to galax's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I'm wondering if perhaps I should have gotten one of these instead of the Dell 2001FP, though it does work rather well so far I've only tested it out on my 1040STf, and it has (I think) other problems with it's video. Pretty sure at one point I found a loose capacitor in the machine, and even on a SC1224 it was flickering in random spots, but now I have no idea where it was. I posted about this in another thread anyhow, so don't want to double post here. Tempted to get one of these NEC's anyhow, to see if I like it as much as the Dell. -
Ha, yeah well, the Atari 400 was a hideous blemish on an otherwise awesome line of computers. 1200XL, a friend of mine had one, I haven't had a chance to really get one, I'm also missing a 65XE... I can't actually get the TT to boot to a usable desktop. So not sure how I can test the ram? I know the TOS upgrade has one built in, so I'll probably end up getting that. I'm considering giving my Mega STe a nice bath with some isopropyl, anyone see the harm in that?

Finally got some time to attempt to resurrect my Ataris. First up, the TT030. At first I plugged it in and only got a black screen, but then noticed the reset switch had broken and was pushed in, after pulling that out it gives me the white screen (TOS 3.05 doesn't have the memory test that 2.06/3.06 has) but it sits there at that white screen and does nothing. When pressing the keyboard, it gives the 'tink' sound out of it's speaker, but it seems like it's still in a sort of stuck reset mode, because it doesn't tink every time I hit the space bar. I did get a new reset switch to replace it, so will probably be doing that tonight. But let's get onto the questions.... 1) What is the difference between a TOS 3.06 UK and US? I've seen someone had the UK roms for sale, but haven't bought them due to not knowing the difference there. 2) I do have a TT Fast RAM card, CA401058 with 4 SIMMs in it, looks like it's configured for 1mb SIMMs, so probably only 4mb of ram, I'll worry about upgrading that later. 3) I've seen a few mods upgrading the ST-RAM in the system, mine are all socketed so I'm not sure if I could just pop the chips out and replace them with bigger chips? I did see that it tops out at 10mb of ram though. 4) Has anyone ever thought to recreate a VME graphics card and market it? They were way too expensive to get a hold of back in the day and are still rare to find now (for either my Mega STe resurrection or the TT030) Thanks for any suggestions/help with the white screen issue. I do have an old hard drive connected to it, but have no clue if it still works. It grunts and hums if that's any indication Someone elsewhere had suggested that it could be the ram needs to be cleaned up. Since the ST ram are socketed on the motherboard and the TTram card is just a bit dusty, not sure where I could clean much. But I'll dust it off and see if that helps (after all, in another post I shook a 1040STf a bit, a dead centipede fell out, and now at least TOS comes up!)

Many moons ago, I had an Atari Mega STe, but then the monitor stopped working. Came to find out that the circuit board inside was cracked. Not sure if it was while it was being moved, or because my older brother is a jerk. Either way it stopped working. I had ended up getting a TT030, because it can be used with a VGA monitor, but unfortunately as everyone knows, the gaming compatibility isn't all that great. So I ended up getting an Atari 1040STf from a friend, along with his SC1224. Pretty sure it had some weird issue with the video where little graphical glitches would appear everywhere. I had taken it apart and found that a capacitor had somehow broken off the board. I always meant to replace it, but never got around to it, and now I have no idea where it was connected to, or what the capacitor was. I think it was in the shifter area. Anyhow, fast forward to today. I found in this glorious forum that a Dell 2001FP monitor should work with a cable to connect up the old STs! So I pulled out the 1040STf (my Mega STe, sadly was left with it's cover off and tucked away and mice did their business on it, I cleaned out most of it, but haven't dared to power it on yet (need to finish cleaning it). I plugged it in, connected it to the Dell 2001FP with my shiny new cable from Best Electronics, and fired it up... and was rewarded with a black screen! NOooo! But wait... it gets better. I pull it apart to see if I can again find where that capacitor had snapped off, and maybe compare it to some motherboard pictures online (couldn't really find any that had the shifter just like mine) and while I was blowing some dust out of the ol' girl, a dead centipede fell out. A CENTIPEDE... I about laughed my fool head off. Anyhow, I put it back together, and hooked it back up, low and behold, I have video! Unfortunately the video is quit horribly off. I've tried playing with the phasing, but haven't had any luck. The true test will be if I can get my Mega STe working on it, but it'd be nice to have a working 1040STf as well (also need to see if I can't get the TT030 to do more than give me a white screen and make the 'tink' noise.) This will give me at least one computer from each family of Atari computers. I have the 800, 600xl, 800xl, XEGS, 130XE, 1040STf, Mega STe, TT030, (and just recently) Falcon030. Attached are some images. (Now that I think about it, I should have taken a picture of the centipede.) P.S. Pictures wouldn't attach, so here are some links. https://thefnords.org/1040stMB.jpg https://thefnords.org/STlow.jpg https://thefnords.org/STmed.jpg https://thefnords.org/SThi.jpg Not sure what is up with ST hi, but it's all sorts of unusable.

I just sent a PM for one too. Just got my Falcon today, time to start upgrading it

Resurrected (sort of) my original Atari 800xl!
leech replied to leech's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I actually used no screw driver at all, I hadn't noticed the shielding had a whole in it for it, so I had taken the shielding off and moved the nob around. It was then that I thought 'what is this for?' and looked it up and found it was for doing the color adjusting -
Resurrected (sort of) my original Atari 800xl!

It's easy enough, it was right under the shift key. While the hole on the bottom of mine wasn't usable, you can pop off the keyboard, and there was a hole through the shielding to adjust it. -
Resurrected (sort of) my original Atari 800xl!
leech replied to leech's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
The hole is there, it's just the adjustment tool would have to go in through the top (there is a hole in the shielding right above it) the hole in the bottom only reaches where the plastic prongs are holding it in. Not sure where to look at the revision, I have a D-364 on the bottom in blue ink, next to the serial number. I did notice last night while looking on ebay that I must have an older model, because mine came with a black brick power supply, whereas the newer ones have a power supply that's designed to look like the case, and has a black label on the bottom. Also mine is from Taiwan, whereas the newer ones look like they're from Hong Kong. -
So a very long time ago, I was moving my 800xl from upstairs to downstairs, and had dropped it down the stairs. Pretty sure it was at that point that it no longer showed any color on the screen. I had posted to a forum (thought it was this one, but I can't find the post) asking if anyone knew how I could fix it. This was many many years ago, and the answers I got were of the 'reseat your chips' variety. Well, tonight I decided to once again attempt to fix it, so I managed to find an Atari Field Service Manual, and it had suggested adjusting the 'R38' pot. I guessed it was the little adjustable thing (actually, it really started 'cause I was bored, took it apart and wondered if that little knob was what I needed to adjust, then looked that up.) Sure enough that fixed the issue! My question is though, is it odd that the slot for adjusting it is on the top side of it? there is a hole in the bottom of the 800xl where it is, so you'd think you'd be able to take a flathead and turn it there, but there is nothing there but the bottom of what you need to adjust. Either way, now my 800xl has color again! Granted, I have a 130XE, 600XL, XEGS and 800 on top of that one, but I don't have a power supply for the 800, will have to track one down one of these days. Love the old 8-bits, they live through everything.

There is a screenshot that says/shows AmigaOS 3.9. I only see the source code to compile, so I'll have to make sure my compiler works.

Sadly, the Atari ST version is missing the nice music at the end that the Amiga version does. I've also noticed, that on the ST version, when you're in the tunnels, rolling around, the dust doesn't kill you, whereas the newer release and the Heart of the Alien version does! I am pretty sure I still have my original Another World for the ST somewhere. I did send off an email, hopefully they have enough... I had missed the first run by a short while... had no clue they were doing a second run otherwise would have hopped on board!
-
Nice! Thanks for that, I'll have to try it out on my Amiga!
-
I've found it crashes under Steam, if you launch it directly it somewhat works, though then I can't configure the steam controller for it. Yeah, I'd love it on the Jaguar. I should play more games on it, wish I had the time. Bought Skyhammer and Robinson's Requiem a while back, still haven't had time to really play them a lot. Then again the voice acting on Robinson's Requeim... horrible.. It's too bad Heart of the Alien was only ever released for the Sega CD.
-
Are they planning on a third run? I remember seeing the pre-order, and I'd missed the first run, didn't know they were doing a second until today . Also Another World is somewhat broken on Linux, so figured I'd get it for the Jaguar, not that I haven't beaten it several times on the ST version, and Amiga.

Multi sync cables back at Best Electronics
leech replied to delvis's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I saw this earlier and I really have to ask, does their site appear exceptionally awesome on an Atari ST, and it's just under a modern browser that it looks like the most horribly designed page ever? I'm going to end up needing to order some things from them (probably along with this cable). Maybe I should suggest they contract a friend of mine for web development At least clean up the font size/color a bit more.
