Ha, I bought a Switch thinking it'd be fun if I ever went on a trip, or that my coworkers all bought one as well, and we could play games multiplayer. I've never really been a Nintendo fan, but figured why not. You know what my Switch does now? Sits in it's dock behind my TV and is barely used. When I have time to game, I prefer my PS4 Pro, or PC by far. I did play a lot of Boulder Dash on the VCS, but now apparently I have to start over as one of the updates ate the saves I would like to be wrong about the fewer game systems being sold thing... but I probably am not. I'd like to hope it's because people are gaming more on their PCs (by the lack of availability of being able to buy a damn new GPU, the market would seem to agree!). But TRUTH of the matter is. Most people game on their mobile devices... I hate it. Mobile gaming to me is painful and costly, where everything is microtransaction crap. The other place people go for gaming is for competition gaming, which (and I don't even know about this for sure) I think IS mostly done on PCs. "Get off my lawn, you damn kids!"

I agree with this. Current management had their own weird things going for them, and yes we wanted more transparency and some of the things happening at game conferences were kind of shady. But growing pains.. They still haven't done anything close to 80s Atari where they bled millions (daily according to somethings I've read). Or have made awesome decisions like making more copies of E.T. than 2600s existed... My point is that once hacked, they'll end up running Linux/Windows/Mac just like the VCS is I don't think the PS5 really has a specialized SSD, it's just something that isn't common to PC motherboards yet. Unless Sony is going to be making their own proprietary sticks for them like Microsoft, then it's still just normal hardware. Most of the rest of the PS5 'special' stuff reminds me of Blast Processing. My point is more that companies no longer make custom hardware for their game consoles. Really the last time that happened was with the PS3 era. x86 assembly is still x86 assembly (not that people probably code that low of level...) AMD basically makes the hardware for the VCS, PS5 and Xbox systems. They're just modified a bit here and there by the respective companies. While they're not general use PCs, they're basically still computers with limited use. Besides, when you could (feasibly once they're hacked) run x86 PC games on the PS5 / Xbox, then doesn't that also make them basically PCs? so yeah the architecture does kind of make it the same. You can already run raspbian or lakka, etc on the Switch... So maybe one day you'll be able to run Lakka on the Amico and have a neat little retro box there too.

Eh? Like the operating system and hardware and software is all that matters when comparing systems. Amico and Ouya are both systems that run Android and ARM. VCS is neither of those things. People got stuck on comparing the VCS to a Raspberry Pi, which again is ARM based. And is more like the Ouya or Amico. How is an Open piece of x86_64 hardware with a Linux operating system, with the option to upgrade and use as a full blown PC in any way shape or form compared more to a locked down ARM based system running Android than another locked down piece of ARM hardware running Android? 1) if Amico fails to bring any funny games to it, you will be stuck with mobile gaming on a TV, just like the Ouya. 2) if Atari fails to bring any fun games to AtariOS... no big deal you can run your own OS on it and run whatever!
-
Yeah, I don't know what he is going on about. With the exception of the Switch, consoles ARE PCs, they just have different operating systems on them to lock them down from general use. So the argument they are hard to code for is moot.
-
Haha, literally.. Amico = Android Ouya = Android VCS != Android. make sense?
-
They do eat your save files, but now each user logged in get their own save files.

I kind of thought the Game Jolt deal would be more for native games as opposed to another streaming service. Antstream seems a bit hit and miss for me, depending on time of day, etc.
-
You only actually have 6GB of RAM on the VCS as 2GB is assigned to video RAM by default.
-
I got an update today, just didn't see what changed really (as I was working at the time, and had only fired it up to test out Geforce Now.
-
Does it blend? Ha ha! Did GameJolt (whatever that is, I kind of saw a few things about it in the last few days, not all of it VCS related) actually release for it? I guess I've had mine for a month too and besides with mucking around in the bios and installing Linux on it, I haven't had much time beyond the initial week I had it to play much on it (I do want to go back and play more Boulder Dash). It is a fun little game system, just like you, not much time to play on it, been working like crazy lately.

'in the hands of backers' should be what that says. I am treating the VCS as 'early access' like so many games I ended up buying on Steam, realize they are nothing short of broken betas, then hope the developers don't die (yes I had one game where the apparently single developer died) and actually finish the game and take it out of early access. That is the state of the AtariVCS until they do a general release and it's found on store shelves. I heard that was supposed to be March, but then also heard Spring, which will probably be the case.
-
1) if you are going to open it all the alway to upgrade the RAM, you may as well max it out. 2) it isn't all that different in a price from 16 to 32. 3) there isn't much reason to do it outside of 'you can'
-
So you can actually use Geforce Now through Chrome to play games from your Steam / Gog / Ubi Connect library. Though, much like Stadia on the VCS, it seems that controllers don't work yet and you'd have to use keyboard / mouse.
-
Question: Should this be considered a 'pre-launch' title, seeing as the actually full launch of the VCS should be in the spring? I should play it some more, just been too busy with other projects.
-
Maybe make a door for that poor dude who thought his memory needed to breathe.
-
Ha, yeah some nutjob added a 1060 through the mini PCI that the BT/WiFi card is in.
-
With 32gb of ram you can run several VMs at once. That is the only purpose a normal PC has as well, really. Or maybe large video editing.

"We should release a game system, what do we got?" "Well, we can do the 7800 that was done but shelved when we took over... or we could repackage the 8bit computer hardware that we aren't selling the XE line fast enough and slap it into a game system box..." "Yes, do that."
-
True. But wasn't it also Kassar that held back releasing any new consoles with new hardware? As much as I like the 5200, they just repackaged '79 tech for '82 and slapped in Analog Joysticks that most people couldn't grok their purpose (non centering and tendency to break without use aside). If all their great wngineers hadn't left, the next console could have been a bit motlre successful.
-
But, and I'm probably wrong here, but was that more about Nolan not really being a businessman and getting overworked more than the money not being there? From everything I've read about it, the sale to Warner was because he was just burned out. It was under Ray Kassar that their cash flow went the opposite way from raking in millions to losing millions per day. It was my understanding of it was that it was when Warner took over, they changed how much engineers/developers got paid, causing many of them to leave to go to other companies, where they started making crappier games, flooding the market with bullshit and causing the video game crash. Which is also probably a big reason why when Tramiel bought half of Atari, he stayed away from the video game side, tried to make just computers and sort of failed at that.
-
Ha, they were more successful when they had Hot Tub meetings.
-
Ha, when one of my games (Conan Exiles) is 96gb, 2TB becomes not that much.
-
Ha, anything is possible. Does anyone remember when the Playstation was first hitting the magazines? Everyone said Sony couldn't pull it off, and that Nintendo and Sega reigned supreme. At the time I said they will succeed due to Sony having a shitload of money. And I was right. Atari on the other hand does not (unless their hotel chain and cryptocurrency pay off). They just need to actually get friendly with developers. If they can pull that off and get some reasons for people to buy the VCS outside of it being a 'cute case for a PC', and their classic joystick for emulators, then they will do okay. Will they ever be at the level of selling the 2600 again? I doubt it. I mean those were the days they practically were printing money. Personally I would enjoy Sega getting back in the game... they actually have some more enjoyable IP than Atari.
-
Ha, this actually happened with the Amiga. Though since that is a greater shit show than the Atari assets, it hasn't gone anywhere outside of a computer that is too expensive for most people to justify the cost and the ever elusive A1222. It is too bad Bushnell doesn't some how get back into the game and become even just a 'trophy wife' for the current Atari.
-
So a remake of an old system with older games is some how more valid than a more modern system? i mean 'Atari' already worked with AtGames to make the flashbacks, I think they must have been successful enough for them to go for the new hardware. Either way, as long as stuff is released that makes people happy, it's all good. Edit: so looked more into the Amico. It is everything people were complaining about the VCS. An expensive Android box?
