The "it hasn't aged well" comment is certainly becoming a popular and tiresome sight whenever a 3D PSX game comes up for discussion. It does seem a trendy thing to bash the 3D from that era but I can definitely understand how some folks can find these games harder to play now when gamers are well accustomed to dramatically higher resolutions and other swanky trimmings of modern 3D graphics. Playing on a CRT helps to take the edge off of the low res nature of PlayStation-era 3D but it won't correct texture warping or extend draw distance or improve frame rate, things that could be genuine hurdles for gamers weaned on the comparitively seamless 3D worlds of today. Perhaps someday the 3D graphics of the 3DO/Saturn/PSX/etc age will be viewed as an appealing "style" like that of 2D from the 8-bit era. I just looked at a couple of games from that era on youtube, Virtua Fighter, Daytona and Tekken. They look so dated. I don't know why, but 3d just doest have the appeal that an old 2d game does. It's similar with 3d animation vs 2d animation, 2d animation from 50 years ago still looks lovely.

Samurai Shodown series -
Ahh...so what about retrogaming sports fans? I got the best of both worlds. That maybe where the obsession comes into play. I think all of us used to play these games when we were kids. It's the mentality of "I can now buy most of everything I couldn't have as a child" that plays a part too. But the OCD could be (at least in my case) that I want to complete the collection. Even though I fully well know that's impossible. I think a lot is mixed in. The thrill of the hunt, the desire to fill up yet another shelf, the admiration of friends (even if they think you maybe wasting your time/money), and the satisfaction that you (we) are doing our part in keeping retro gaming alive. Let me tell ya, for me, one of the biggest highs is recovering a "dead" system. Well go to a doctor and try to get them to diagnose you with ocd. Really, I'd be interested to know what happens My whole point is the term ocd has now been made into a joke. Collecting things has f-all to do with ocd. Ocd is tough, it's horrible, it's been made into a trivial joke though by people not understanding what it is. That only hurts people who actually have ocd. Buying things for the sake of buying is just consumption. I actually get annoyed at owning things I dont use. I'm just not a collector for the sake of collecting.

Definiely.. add Aero Fighters series to the Neo Geo list (I have the third on my 4-slot cabinet). Viewpoint is good too, as is Pulstar. I like the Gunbird games for the arcade.. not just because they're great shooters, but the dialogue between the characters in the cutscenes is funny! I have viewpoint, I don't particularly like it though....

Some of you guys keep talking about tg16, but forget pc engine is the same system! Anyway, I agree, pc engine/tg16 is great for shooters. Megadrive aswell. I was too lazy to write anything last night, apart from "?" I was tired! Eltigro, Gates of thunder/lords of thunder looks brilliant! I really have to get a pc engine cd system!

Ooh, Clockwork Orange! That's one of my favourite films. My prize Laserdisc is Shock Treatment (Japanese release), though I also have fond feelings for The Kindred (which has never been released on DVD) and Boogie Nights. I have a fairly large collection, I'd say 100+, but I'm in the process of attempting to sell more than half of them. I got a bunch of Laserdiscs that I have no desire to watch from when I bought my main player. I had to look up shock treatment and The Kindred up on imdb

I've only just started collecting within the last month or so and I'm restricting myself to what I can find at the flea market or thrift stores. I like to buy stuff, so if I didn't hold myself to this rule I'd have no money left. 'Tis the curse of being young and with little money. What's the crown jewel of your Laserdisc collection? I'm sure you've got a favourite or two. Clockwork orange and my Dario Argento laserdiscs I don't have a big collection though. I'm really picky about films I buy (on dvd aswell). how about yours?

Cost of new games... in Australia >:(
so_tough! replied to DemonoidTentacle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It's always been more expensive in Europe. I've heard Americans on atariage complain about prices of certain retro items (example "they were looking for 20 dollars for it, what a rip off!"), but I'm often left thinking,"what? That's not a bad deal at all" lol -

That's a killer score! it certainly is! -
I would post a listing on Craigslist looking for an Intellivision, that is what I did and I got it way cheaper than anything on E-bay. Do they have a craigslist in Ireland though?? hehe yep there is

What if the person has a nagging fear that someone out there might have a better, or more complete, or more attractive collection? The person might think he enjoys collecting without even knowing the real reason why collecting makes him feel good. It's 3 28 am and I'm still waiting for santa to arrive, when do you think he will show up? As for your question, I think that may come under "keeping up with the joneses'". Many people have this problem and what I would say about that is, people love you for who you are, not what you have. Well, people that actually matter!. Also, try to accept yourself (there is only one you!) and try to chill out and be cool . Take time out to enjoy the simple things in life and hopefully you will realise that health and friendship are what really matters! I'm feeling that hippie trip..

If intrusive thoughts force you to collect things to reduce anxiety, you might be a redneck. Oops, I mean you might have OCD. that's the point, if you're collecting something to alleviate or reduce intrusive thoughts, feelings etc (example-If I don't collect 50 tin cans this week then a loved one will get cancer) then that could be ocd, but it's not when you ENJOY collecting etc.
-
People mis label ocd all the time though. ocd is not about collecting or anything like that. Ocd is not when you have 500 games because you ENJOY having them or being a neat freak because you enjoy having a tidy house. The phrase "I'm so ocd ..." has really made it sound trivial, most people who use that phrase do not have ocd. Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety
