Commodore 64 Introduction to Basic-Anyone need/want?
Mirage replied to mjarnold7's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
I'm interested in both, but what condition? Have pics? What prices? -
Exactly, that's what I thought too. That's all I was asking, if anyone else saw something more than that. Thanks for a straightforward reply as always!
-
No, your comment itself was plenty to convey your meaning. You are ignoring my question, but implying quite clearly that you think my reading comprehension skills are lacking. Just too tough to answer a question directly apparently. I hope you saw my post #15. Hoping that will make it more clear. See ya Marty. No further unhelpful snarky replies are necessary.
-
Let me make another comparison to make what I'm saying more clear, I hope Say someone came up with the game Pengo, but then someone came along and decided to put it in a race car cabinet. That's what I'm saying. I understand that someone came up with that concept. I also understand that Marketing might think that a race car cabinet might help persuade kids to play the game (whether for money or just to keep them occupied waiting in a dentist's office). But that doesn't mean there is a connection between penguins and race cars. See what I mean? Again, maybe there is some connection here that I'm not seeing. I'm not a Peanuts fan, and I don't know that much about Snoopy. Or puppies for that matter. I just don't see the connection. That's why I assume it was just an attempt to draw kids into the game with a cute but unrelated theme. Unless someone can tell me different.
-
Actually, no, it's not. It explains the concept, but does not explain the connection between the game of Pong and Snoopy, which is what I'm specifically asking about. I'm sorry if I'm not making myself clear, but I can't comprehend how I could possibly make myself any more clear. Do you understand what I am saying, or are you going to make another snarky comment in reply?
-
I already read all that, but I mean, it's two paddles with a ball going back and forth between them. Was/is there some connection there with Snoopy/Peanuts that I'm not understanding? It seems to be a total non-sequitur. Pong........ umm... Puppies!!!! EDIT: So basically, I guess all I can get out of this is that they attached a Snoopy (then generic "puppy") theme to the game, just in a marketing attempt to draw kids in, but there really is no other connection.

Yeah, you saw how well communicating with the seller first worked out for me. There's no end to stupidity. Still, that's the best shot we have in a world of such carelessness.
-
It's ok, it's all newbie mistakes. After you get used to working with it, you'll know immediately what's wrong in any given situation. You'll be able to "feel" the machine and the code, and it will all be second nature after while.

Here is the mouse dancing over your corrected lines
-
Yes, good call on the comma, I forgot that I fixed that immediately as soon as I copied and pasted it into the emulator. The lines 20, 25 and 30 read the data in lines 100 through 109 and are therefore dependent on their accuracy. DATA will never give an error in the line containing the data numbers themselves, because you can put anything in there. The problem is when you READ that data, because if the data contains values that are incorrect for what they're being read into, they'll cause an error. Again, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but to the OP, note that I debugged your program literally 2 minutes after you posted it. Yet here you are, literally a week later still denying that was the problem.
-
OK, I just made the changes I already suggested to you, and the program works fine. The data statement values were the issue. I get a little mouse dancing across the screen. In line 106, change the 5630 to 56, 30 In line 107, change the 25463 to 254, 63 My real recommendation to you is that when you ask for advice, and someone who has been programming and debugging the C64 since the day it came out (actually, longer than that since I was programming the PET and Vic-20 before that with essentially the same BASIC) offers you advice... you listen. Don't say "it's irrelevant", "it's not my code", "I just copied and pasted" etc. I gave you the answer and you refused to evem try it. In a couple minutes, I fixed your problem for you by copy/pasting into an emulator, making the changes I suggested, and watching the little mouse dance across the screen. When you ask a question and get an answer, at least take that same 2 minutes to give it a shot yourself. You've got to put something in to get something out. But all that aside, Welcome to Commodore!

Did you ever figure out that I was right about the numbers in the data being wrong?

SOLD! Sorry, no carts for sale. I've never gotten into collecting A8 or C64 carts since pretty much everything (if not everything) is available on disk, or has been converted to disk image. The only A8 carts I have are Basic, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and a few other commons that are just cool to have. Thanks Kevin, glad this 800 is going to a good home where it will be loved - Chris

PM returned. Sale Pending Payment.
-
Great to deal with! Thanks again.
-
What the flock, usually people are falling all over themselves for a nice 800.
-
Oh thanks, but I just hang out here sometimes when my wife gets sick of listening to my messed up opinions
-
It's smaller than a 1200XL!
-
Reduced to $75 for this very very clean 800.

Your reasoning is faulty. Line 30 is reading the data statements and is producing an Illegal Quantity error, which could very well be due to a quantity being read into it. All of those values being read should be between 0 and 255 inclusive. Humor me. Try doing what I said to fix that problem, then see what you get. If nothing else, it's good troubleshooting, but I suspect you will find that it's the problem. As far as "it's not my code", that doesn't matter either. There's plenty of code out there, especially what's printed in old magazines and books that needs to be corrected as there are typos and printing errors. Same with code pasted on the 'net. Again, I'm not 100% positive that this is the only error, but at a glance, that appears to be one issue. Try it out, report back what happens.
-
As for your question #1, are you typing anything after hitting the C=+# combination? Just hitting those won't change anything on their own. If you hit that combo, then type and it's still the same color, then I guess I'd next suspect a faulty C= key.
-
In line 107, is there supposed to be a comma in the 25463? Or in line 106 in the 5630 for that matter? Those don't appear right to me, and would cause that error. (and even if the book reads like this, try splitting them just to see what happens).
-
Sorry I don't have a link, but there are some newer units on ebay that I've seen for what seems like decent prices to me. Not trying to distract your search for an original one if that's what you want, but for my money, I'd look for a good new unit.
-
Hopefully you can find one closer. But if not, I would sell you a working regular 1541 for $20 + exact shipping. The $20 isn't really for the drive, it's for my time to pack it and take it to the PO. In case you're unaware, they are really heavy, so I'm not sure what shipping would be to NY. I'd pack it well, but the shipping companies are sometimes really rough with packages. Anyway, I have what you need, let me know.
