They switched to 4x3 a while ago, starting with TMNT/Marvel/Star Wars. Much better color and contrast on those screens as well.

actually, i'm ok at quantum, need a lot of work to get to the higher levels. ha ha
well, they also have tapper, which had a specific controller, and
joust had a 2 way horizontal stick, defender had a 2 way vertical stick, etc, etc.
basically, they grab a bunch of licenses, slap them on a machine, without any thought
as too which ones, just because a lot of people requested them.
they don't actually play them, or test them, and i doubt most even know anything about
the games, (like the button layout for defender) etc.
sad, i know.

True, but I can live with most of those. Tapper was just 2/4 way sticks shaped like draft pulls. Joust is fine with a 4 way/8 way. But Paperboy with a joystick is like Star Wars with a joystick.

Paperboy without the handlebar controller misses much of the point of Paperboy.

1) no, the emulation will be exactly the same as before, no changes
2) they have never used backgrounds before, so they won't now either
3) it's not even confirmed to be a vertical monitor, so it's the other way around 9/12 games horizontal 3/12 hortizontal
i have already modded my partycade, added the proper controls and settings, and all the backdrops for the
games asteroids, asteroids deluxe, lunar lander, and warlords:
this will have to be modded to do what you are expecting.

Ah, I see. Well, no sale here, unless they just want to sell the bare cabinet.
Are you using a trackball for Quantum? You seem pretty good at it.

Tempest cab looks awesome...if they do the vector games right. The gen 1s were horrible. If they use the emulation they used for Star Wars, they should be great.
I wonder if Asteroids Deluxe will have the appropriate backdrop?
Only real downside is all those horizontal games cropped on that vertical monitor.
I have all of these games emulated on my Pi 1ups, but man that cabinet is cool.

The Star Wars pinball looks like fun. Alas, I am out of room!

I am terrible at Pac-Man, I can barely get to pear. Not much better at Ms. Pacman. That being said, turbo mode is for losers.

For those who mod, I just installed one of these spinners to my vertical cabinet to play Tempest.

For $40, and the fact that it uses just a button hole for mounting, it works quite well.

Not an Outrun fan, but glad to see a driving cabinet from A1UP.
Spy Hunter, anyone?

Sure, the control panel overhangs a bit, but it's nowhere near as objectionable as the 1ups. I also don't mind the boxy cabinets.

We know. They all look awful, too.

I was unable to get Mame2010 to run it at anything approaching a playable speed on my Pi 3B+.

I had an Rasp Pi machine that ran even PS1 games well, but it couldn't get TRODA right. It was playable, but some areas missing background graphics, sound issues, things like this.
This latest Mame runs it JUST like the arcade machine, to my great excitement. No sound issues, all the graphics are correct (particularly after the first boss when you go vertical towards the little elves; that was always missing the scrolling graphics and looked really weird and bad in prior versions). Not saying I don't want this cab, I do and would love to have it. But at this point I can't rationalize both the space and the $400 for it.
For what it's worth, TRODA plays well under Advmame in Retropie. It's a little different to set up than the lr-mames, but it's definitely an option for those running a Pi cabinet.

I had read they have been using mame .37b, back in 2018 anyway. Whatever they are using, it isn't emulating properly.
On my Raspberry Pi, the same exact rom produces different sounds in Mame2003 (incorrect) vs Mame2016 (correct). This should be easy to get right.

The Namco one. Galaxian.zip
Older versions of Mame don't emulate the sound correctly, they emulate it slower and with a lower pitch.

Sound seems off in Galaxian vs latest Mame.

Yeah, we will see if it gets off the ground.

That's fair enough. To be clear, I wasn't specifically talking about a vertical monitor in the above post though. A 27", 4x3 horizontal monitor would produce a roughly 20" vertical display, with less wasted space than a 16x9 unit. I could live with that vs a dedicated vertical cab.
I think in the world of 16x9, 4x3, and 3x4 gaming, that a largish 4x3 display is the best compromise.
I've been looking at the cabinet kits from game room solutions, which are a nice but alas, are exclusively set up for 16x9 monitors. I still hold out hope that someone will scratch the itch I've got here, in a full sized cabinet vs the 3/4 scale.
-
I mean, you can keep telling me I'm wrong for wanting this if you want to. I'll keep my $600 until then.
-
If there was a proper 4:3 version of the Legends Ultimate, I'd buy one.
My other gripe was about the looks of cab and art, but 3rd parties can help there.
Bill, I am probably in the minority here, but I think 4:3 version of tour company's cabinet would be really something.

50 games, that's easily 10 times what you get in an average 1up cab. Hope someone notices.

Other than the layout forcing you to play Missile Command with your left hand on the trackball....eh.
Perhaps DIYRetroarcade will release a fixed panel for it.
