  1. I'm guessing that since he used big arcade type buttons that he didn't want to clutter up the panel. If I remember right he just put 1-4 on there for single player options.

    Hey guys,

The 4 buttons across the top of the controller represent buttons 1 to 4. The '4' buttons can be changed to '5' by simply swapping the leads inside the enclosure. I included the '5' button because i wanted to play mouse trap :-)

Your right Joey. I think 8 buttons on the front of the arcade panel would take up too much realestate, and to be honest, i dont use 6, 7 or 8 for any of the games i play. If you want to play a 2 player game you can hit those buttons on the 2nd player controller pad (for most games anyway).

  2. Hi everyone,

Ive had a few enquiries about how to make one of these controllers and i've recently decided to knock up a small website about it. I've tried to include as much information as possible to help those that are making a project like mine, or of their own design.

Hope this helps, and thanks for checking it out!

  3. Hi Everyone,

Some of you might remember an arcade style controller i made for my colecovision, posted here.

Its been a few months since then, and i recently decided to knock up a small website with some of the things i learned along the way, for others thinking about making a controller like mine or of their own design. I've included as much information as i can, but will probably be adding more to it / refining it over time.

  4. Auction ended.

Unfortunately, this auction hasnt recieved enough interest, i think mainly because of the postage cost, so the controller has not been sold. Which is a shame, as it really is a great controller!

However, I will be upgrading this controller to have 4 extra buttons across the top of the 2 main fire buttons, representing the numbers 1-4 on the colecovision number pad and most likely listing it on ebay australia. I will be open to offers until it is listed on ebay, which i'm not sure exactly when, maybe a week or 2.

Thank you all for your encouragement and kind words about the controller.

I'd also like to say a special thanks to Double Down, who helped me with a problem i was having with the DB9 cable. Cheers mate.

  5. Thanks ianoid :)

Yeah it is pretty heavy, being constructed of thick MDF. The Joystick is also quite heavy too, weighing in around 300-400grams. Its SOLID ;)

But thats ok because i wanted to make something that could withstand alot of punishment. It has an arcade feel to it when you use it, which tends to lead to alot of bashing and thrusting.

  6. Colecovision Arcade-Style Controller - FOR SALE!

    Information about the controller:

Assembled purely by myself from Industry quality arcade parts. The joystick is a Sanwa and can be changed between 4way and 8way. The controller can be used for all colecovision games that require 2 button operation. Games that use the numberpad are not compatible with this controller. This controller circuitry is based on the standard colecovision controller and I'm lead to believe that it might work with the atari 2600 and even the Sega Genesis / Mega-Drive, but have not tested this myself so can not gurrantee it. The cable is straight and approximately 1.5 metres (5 feet) long.

More information about the specific features of this controller can be found here:

    Internal:

    Sale Terms:

I will be taking bids for my Arcade Style Colecovision Controller. Please private message me with your bid (dont post on this forum). I will be accepting bids until 6:30pm Melbourne Time 21st December. I will not be accepting bids under 80 AUD (approx 70 USD) as this amount wouldnt even cover the materials used to make it (excluding the countless hours of assembly involved).

If you are bidding from the US, please also take into account this item is located in Melbourne Australia and will cost approximately (and only PURELY approximately) 50-60 AUD. If no bids are received that I deem reasonable, i will be listing the arcade controller on ebay.

There is ONLY ONE of these available. I will not be able to assemble any more of these due to problems getting more components. There are only 2 of these in the world. The one that I'm keeping for myself (because its just so good! :-) and the one for sale here.

Good luck, and thanks for viewing!

  7. Hi again Jess!

I'm not sure if i can help you or not, because to be quite honest im not sure what your asking or even if i know enough. Do you want to know how the buttons work in general, or do you want to know how they work with your particular set up? I know how the Colecovision standard controller works, and can attempt to explain it to you if you like.

  8. Last bump.

After much deliberation I've decided to sell this controller (the prototype). I will be listing it on ebay in a few days time, so keep an eye out for it! I just need to tie down the db9 cable inside the controller box and its pretty much ready to go. I dont know if i will be making anymore, so this might be the first and last available.

Thank you all for your positive feedback.

  9. Unreal!

I posted a few weeks back an arcade-style controller for the CV that i've built, and I will most likely be selling soon on ebay (after a few internal finishing touches). I've designed the PCB from the standard CV controller minus the number pad obviously. So, without testing it, its pretty safe to say that it would work on an Atari 2600 as well.

Thank you all for the confirmation with this one!

  10. So... uh, does anyone know the pinout for the ColecoVision joystick port? The numeric keypad in particular confuses the hell outta me.

    Hey Jess,

I followed this circuit diagram to build my controller (which, obviously, worked)

    http://www.atarihq.com/danb/files/ColecoController.pdf

I haven't implemented anything from the numberpad in practice, but i'm pretty sure i've worked out how it works in theory. Don't ask me to explain it though, because its pretty confusing :)

    Hope that helps you!

  11. Thanks for your interest guys.

I might put another one together and put it on ebay. Unfortunately i live in Australia so if someone wins it in america postage is going to be expensive, probably around 50aud approx, as the enclosure weights around 2.5kg. But still, there seems to be a bit of interest in it so its probably worth the while. I'm also open to private sale so if you want more info send me an email, and ill let you know.

  12. The joystick is a Sanwa, and can be swapped between 8-way and true 4-way mode by rotating the restrictor plate at the bottom of the assembly. So thats covered as well :-)

Thats not a bad idea actually (x-arcade). You could probably rip out the interface PCB inside it and insert a colecovision one in its place. Its definitely a more expensive option though, but if you werent keen on attempting your on enclosure it might be the only choice.
