Thank you for clarifying things Rybags. Shorter chars are not an option but I have come with an idea but I don't know if it will look ok - the extra lines were to be top and bottom game stats but I can have the game area a bit smaller(horizontally) and then have some columns on the sides free where I would have the score and other stats displayed vertically but this might be impractical as it might be hard to read also if I want to have some displaylist interrupts to get more color this will affect the stats too... hmmm

I have found that I need two more lines , is it possible to have a 40x32 chars mode? If so would it be tricky to set up?

Thank you a lot phaeron, it is working fine now

Hi I have started to play with some ataru 8 bit coding and I have ran into a problem, I am trying to have a widescreen with 240 lines (30 lines of which are mode 2 and the others mode 4), but it flickers, it only works with 232 lines, my dlist is: dlist dta $42,a(vram),2,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,$41,a(dlist) What am I doing wrong? thx

No wonder it's so hard to find an ST these days

Heck, and me wanting to have an ST.... -
I like these: They show what a good artist can do on A8. I would mention these also (Forever 2010 party): PS. Where could we find download for releases from Głuchołazy ? Very nice pictures! Want more

Wow it's great!

To me it seems that speccy fans are more forgiving than say their c64 and a8 counterparts. If you get something on the c64 or A8 under 50fps would it be accepted as easily?!

If you need any help with your DLL/DL creation or manipulation just ask over in the 7800 programmers forum. Sure I will. Let's stop hijacking the thread LOL

I must admit I've been tempted by the GX4000 more than once. Never bitten the bullet and bought one tho. i'd go for a 464 Plus or 6128 Plus myself, they'll run all the GX4000 games and the cobbled CDROM to tape converter rig i've already got on my stock CPC464 could feed it converted TAP files. =-) I must get one of these, preferably the 6128+.

If you run Windows you might find my a78psd utility useful :- http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/161355-a78psd-prosystem-save-state-file-analyser/ It analyses ProSystem *.sav files. It'll also decode the Display List List (DLL) and Display List headers for you for both PAL and NTSC screens. Cool thx

Isnt' this one nice?: I have been working on a c64 game: I have started to port it to the A8, and guess what: loads of problem because of the colours, no way to color the different tiles as I want, also a heck of trouble with the sprites, trying to find colours that will be acceptable when in mcm.

7800 beats it on the number of sprites per video scan line. The 7800 can do 29 8 pixel wide sprites in 4 colours or 20 8 pixel sprites in 13 colours. Nice machine apart from the limitations . The 7800 doesn't come close to its high resolution mode. But hey, what do you expect from a machine with only 4K of RAM . Indeed! I tried my hand on the 7800 but ended all tangled when tried to move the sprites(When I get some time I will be back to it no doubt)

Well, if we're limiting it to the play area (as opposed to status graphics) i can only think of Koronis Rift off the top of my head... ...but i know there are a couple more out there using the same 80x192 res with sixteen lumas of one hue - that mode doesn't allow for a fully arbitary selection of colours, is that what you meant...? I meant 16 different colours(different hues) taken from the 256 palette. This would be a better comparison with the st albeit farfeched it may be/sound .

Is it better spec than the Amstrad CPC Plus...? msx2 Sam coupé . . .

Mute. A8 vs C64 (vs spectrum). Didn't got the message? A8 have hundreds of colours to choose from too. Time to visit the store. Hundreds of colours to choose from with dreadful restrictions. You comparing apples with oranges(St can put any of 16 colours anywhere on the bitmap, you can't do this on A8 unless you lose resolution dramatically). How many games are there on the A8 using 16 colours out of 256 and placing them freely on the bitmap? static screens don't count.

Why don't try it live? http://a800win.atari-area.prv.pl/ Homesoft http://www.mushca.com/f/atari/index.php?idx=6 It's easy to set up, you will be running a virtual Atari in no time. Then you can check out for yourself what an Atari 800 is capable of, and what it's not capable of. There isn't such thing as a "best computer", just different computers. And you missed the point, Atari doesn't need a single raster to produce more rich and vivid colours. Check today postings in this thread. You assume too much. How do you know I don't have an A8 or those emulators? I have programmed for the 3 machines mentioned in this thread. I am far from being as a good programmer as TMR but I have dirtied my hands on many systems. So please don't be condescendant about my knowledge of the said platforms. I have entered in this debate not to show the c64 a better machine, but to show you that more colours <> better graphics.

What is that grey blob at the background? Is this picture meant to be seen from a distance? It seems that for you colour is all there is to gfx.

And I am not impressed by any of the A8 screen you posted until now, they have nothing but rainbows. So I asked you for some pictures to compete with this hires ones from the c64. I know that they are very good A8 bitmap art around(g2f) they are good for hardware and can have nice colours but you can have any of these c64 pictures on the A8 without great restrictions, starting with the resolution and then with detail.
