Also, I haven't purchased the 2600 yet. Any reason to not get a 7800 instead and get the UnoCart 2600/7600 for $40?
-
I have a Commodore 1702 monitor. If I run the Atari through a VCR will the input response time be acceptable as well as the picture? I worry about losing some response time by running it through the VCR.
-
I am currently having issues coming up with the best way to play the 2600.
Maybe someone could help as I tell you what I have. I have an Atari 800 xl with UnoCart which I love. A lot of those games have the great sound effects like the 2600 and some games have been recreated to match the 2600 (Raiders, etc). I play my Atari 800 xl through a Commodore monitor because I can't stand joystick delay.
So here is what I've been looking at:
Real Atari 2600
Get Harmony cart. Only works through RF and worried it will look crappy on an LCD TV.
Atari Flashback 2
Looked at this because it had composite out so I can hook it up to my Commodore monitor. But only 40 games and I don't like soldering to add more.
Atari Flashback 9 or X
You can easily add the whole library to these. How is the input lag? Do they look okay on an HDTV? Non gold right? If I am sensitive to response time would wired be better than wireless? Would there be a reason to choose X over 9? Which one has paddle issues?
Retron 77
Not sure I trust that controller. Is the input lag better or worse compared to the Flashback series? Looks like you can easily add games though.
Stella Emulation
This is what I do now and it works fine. Almost no input lag and I use the 2600-daptor with 2600 controllers. Maybe between this and my real Atari 800 that should be enough for me?
Thoughts?
-
Not sure if this has been asked Tommy, but are you going to include the original versions of games? I don't think you should overlook this, even if emulated. When I originally saw the new controllers I pictured digital touch overlays for the old games! Nintendo DS did this brilliantly. A lot of the new remakes seem to have bombastic dance music and stuff these days and some look a little too...busy for my taste (Night Stalker)
It would be nice to have the classic versions included as well.
EDIT
Just did some time searching and found my answer, can't wait!Have Lock N Chase and Locomotion been considered? Thanks!

I am selling my pair of Intellivision controllers with Vision-Dapter USB adapters for PC (which are also compatable with Colecovision) and 76 overlays.

I know very few have s-video enabled but I recently got a Commodore 1702 monitor and plugged the Chroma and Luma cables into the back and the picture was amazing and s-video like. Much better than the front which is just a composite plug.
Did I get lucky and get an Atari 800XL with Chroma / Luma (s-video) enabled?
-
I did a test and it worked. Is there any sense in getting a better quality version?
-
I have a Commodore 1702 monitor and I want to use the Chroma / Luma connections in the back for both my Atari 800XL and my Commodore unit.
Instead of having to plug and unplug them each time I want to use a computer, I was wondering would something like this work, in theory?
Does it simply pass the information or is it very specific? If not, does anyone know of a way to select between two different chroma/luma connections? Thanks!
-
Yeah I do like the idea of keeping both, mainly because the price was so good.

I was able to score a nice, 17" 750 lines JVC TM-H1750C PVM for $20 from a local electronic recycling shop. The picture is really nice, even in RCA through the BNC adapter.
Here is the info:http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/tech_desc.jsp?model_id=MDL101336&feature_id=02Now, I have a friend close to me who is going to sell me a Commodore 1702 monitor for $40. I am beginning to wonder if I even need it now..
Keep in mind the following. I will not be hooking up NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Playstation or anything of the sort. This is strictly for 8-bit computers (Commodore 64 and my Atari 800XL).
Is the JVC overkill for what I am doing and would I be better served getting the Commodore 1702 monitor (which would look nicer in my retro setup)? Then maybe I could sell the JVC and make a profit? How much better would the JVC look through s-video on my Commodore vs using the Commodore Chroma and Luma on the 1702?
Thanks!

Just tried plugging the red cable into the tv, i got black and white video. So yes, white is audio only!
-
No you are correct, I just had to go back and edit my previous post. That cable is suppose to have audio on the red and white, and of course the yellow is intended to be composite. I'm wondering if the manufacturer goofed on your cable, and swapped the yellow for one of the audio leads instead. Might be worth checking out by plugging the yellow into an audio input and see what happens
.I didn't think of that, I will try it.
Is there a chance my Atari 800XL is messed up?
-
I was simply trying to zero in on what was truly happening, and that seemed to be the simplest way to do so. Wasn't trying to be critical.
So in other words you probably got one of the video connections mixed up for the audio connection, and yes that will produce something akin to a buzzing sound. I have that exact same cable as yours, and it works fine for me by hooking it up with the red and white RCA going into left and right audio channels on my monitor/TV, with the Mini-DIN plugged into the S-Video input. And as it was already mentioned, the red and white RCAs on that cable are already internally 'Y' connected, so no need to provide one externally.
Hope that helps
.EDIT: corrected color code for audio connections as being red and white and not red and black as I originally stated. If this doesn't work for you, then it suggests that the cable you purchased is defective.
Yeah, sorry if I was cranky!
I should have known better, I guess I assumed RCA red and white are always left and right but I was wrong. Its odd because the description of the cables mentioned left and right audio, I guess they meant that for that one white plug.
Thanks!

I'm also curious as to what the OP meant by 'feedback', because no matter how things were hooked up, audio feedback would not be the end result. So I think the OP must be referring to something else.
Example of audio feedback, and what causes it.
I get a bit frustrated when people takes things too literally but I will try my best. Everyone else who read my post knows what I meant. I did not mean "feedback" in the typical way, you know. That high pitched noise that happens sometimes when people speak in public? I think everyone who read this thread knew that. Achieving that would be impossible with my setup because that requires a microphone.
It was just massive, loud "noise", not TECHNICALLY feedback in the traditional sense.
-
I am sure there is an easier solution somewhere to purchase, there always is.
Finding it is another issue. So many websites, options. Ebay, Amazon, and even then did I get the right item? Either way I seemed to come up with a "ghetto" solution so its all good.

I got it working WTF.
Just playing around....
bottom is from speakers, top is from Atari cable. No feedback, and the red and white extension are looped into each other created mono to the speakers!

Bottom cable center: is that a male RCA stereo to male 3.5 stereo ? If yes then You need a mono female RCA to stereo female RCA splitter. Done.
Yes it is. So get this? https://www.amazon.com/Female-Splitter-Audio-Adapter-Gold-Plated/dp/B00IJU0WS8
And use my RCA female to female adapter? Upper right center?
-
I'm curious; Are you using external speakers or are the speakers built into the monitor?
DavidMil
External speakers.
When I use the speakers built into the CRT (via white) it is not so bad at all. I assume because my TV/VCR is a mono TV.
-
Okay I might not be explaining. Below is a picture. On the left side is the Atari 800XL cable.
When the red cable is plugged into a speaker system I get massive feedback and noise.
When the white cable is plugged into a speaker system I can only get audio from the left speaker.
I don't I need stereo but I do want to hear sounds from both speakers.
So I want to make use of the white RCA plug (which only has sound on the left side) and have it plug into the 3.5mm you see on the right side and produce sound in both speakers..

-
Here is my collection of cables:

-
On that cable I see:
- Composite video
- Mono Audio
To end up with a 3.5mm plug carrying audio on both L+R, you'd still need the 2 adapters...
So you're saying that mono when plugged directly into a 3.5mm plug with produce sound in only one speaker?
Because I have a lot of RCA to 3.5mm combinations.
-
Ok just reread your OP... to get doubled-mono audio to a stereo 3.5 headphone plug, you'd need these two items connected in series:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/312251786406
Then:
But if all I want IS composite and then audio going to speakers that creates audio in both speakers wouldn't this be all I need?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-800-1200XL-65XE-130XE-Audio-Video-RCA-Cable-NEW-Tested/273771757388
I am not interested in s-video. I would rather buy new cables from within the USA.
-
So I need something like this, where the red (or white) is mono audio?

Best way to play Atari 2600 for me?

Thanks, I cant wait to see an s-video Atari on a Commodore monitor. Its gonna look great.
