Am I to assume that Commodore verisons are always better than Atari? I know that Atari has a better color palette but Commodore has better sound and overall graphics.
I am putting together Commodore 128 and Atari 800XL systems with SD solutions and I am a bit confused. I need a real pro here:
Ultima Series: Obviously Commodore. Music is amazing.
But what about games like these:
Bruce Lee
Star League Baseball
Lords of Conquest
Realm of Impossibility
Archon and Archon 2
M.U.L.E. ( I heard this is better on the Atari)
I also notice some awesome RPGs are not even available on the Atari 800.
Should I just use my Atari for mostly "arcade" like games? You know, Ms Pac Man, Pitfall 2, etc, etc...
-
I would like one too. Not sure if one is available. If it is cheaper than a regular SIO2SD that would be good.
-
I never said emulation

Darnit...lol

Want an Atari 800 or 800XL. Please let me know if you have anything. Thanks!
I am in the 91355 zip code, Los Angeles area.

I am getting one on Sunday. This looks in nice condition.
-
Then I think you know whats next? That PC? Yup thats right, it does not belong there. Replace it ASAP with an IBM 486 so you can play native DOS games properly.
-
Thats a great setup because in effect you have three levels, the two systems and the monitor. Sweet.
I love that old phone you have on the far right. If I didnt know any better and the pc wasn't there, this pic would look like it was from 1984. Take that as a compliment for us nostalgia types..lol

I am really leaning towards an Atari 800 for fun, and using a Commodore Vice emulator for all my Ultima and RPG needs.
What do you think?

Well now I am confused. I just don't know what to do. I really could use your guys help. I have the urge to create a nice setup of a classic computer system. We have an area planned out in the garage and I have a $1,000 budget. As you can see in this thread http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/207946-is-this-commodore-deal-good/ I am tempted to purchase a nice Commodore lot. Later in the thread I have negotiated the purchase down to $200.
But I am so torn. First off, I love emulation, I really do. But I really want my own area in the garage to get away from the kids and wife when I need to and just go back to the classic systems. I do not want to buy I bunch of stuff and sell it. I just want a nice setup with a mioniotr and a bunch of games. Now, the question is which classic computer system?
1. Commodore 128
The Commodore 128 is my all time favorite system. I owned one from 1986 until 1992. However, I feel that once I have all this set up, and wait for the long load times I might begin to think "why in the world am I doing this". I do not care for the floppy drive speed. I also balk at the idea of having to re-purchase all of these great disk games and overpaying from them on Ebay. I am an rpg and Ultima fan, so getting Ultima 1 through V, Bards Tale, Might and Magic, etc could be expensive. So this leads me to 2 options. I could continue with my emulator and I also use a nifty Atari 2600 usb joystick, or I can go the Commodore SD card route. Mirage in that other thread mentioned getting a CF/SD solution like the 1541-Ultimate-II or uIEC. I am concerned abou the amount of work it will take to get these things working. There are at least 2 or 3 other solutions like this and all of the website list all these scematics and make it sound really involved. I would love know which one of these is the easiest to use, and does not require JiffyDOS. I also want to know if I don;t have JiffyDOS, is the speed still much better than a 1541 or 1571 drive. In other words, which one of these SD solutions is so easy a dummy can use it?
2. Atari 800 or 800XL
Why I want this? Well, I was never an Atari computer person. Well, I did own an Atari 400 for a time which would siplay Ultima games in black and white. To me, the Atari 800 (not the XL) just looks sexy. Plus, I have found that emulation on the Atari 800 and the availability of roms and programs is lacking. My only concern here comes with the game library. I don't think the Atari 800 has the game library that Commodore 64 does. Tons of cartirdges yes, but where are all the disk games? I don't see them. And that means big bucks on Ebay. But still it would be fun to run an Atari 800 in my garage. Are there nay cuttle cart or SD type solutions for Atari? And if so, are they easy to use?
Thanks for your help!

Thanks Mirage. I sent you a long PM...

We are working on a sub-deal
QTY 2: working 1571's with power cords, and a 1541 thrown in for fun...
QTY 1: Commodore 128 with power supply
QTY 1: Commodore 64 with power supply
QTY 1: Commodore 1802 Color Monitor with cord
a box full of software he has and joysticks
His offer is $250. I said I would pay $200.
-
I am not getting your math.
You can't move or sell the 1541-II's without power supplies. Value = $0
The 1541's go for $10 each so that's $140
4 C64's that work run about $50 each so that's $200
3 1571's x $50 = $150
3 C128's with no power supply, have to be worth $20 each no? = $60
2 C128's with power supply $60 each x2 = $120
Plus all the extra software and joysticks.
This value is $670 at minimum.

Update. He has located two power supplies for the commodore 128. Not sure if this changes things.
My goal with this is to have a working C128 setup, with some backup hardware in case I need it. I will move whatever I dont need on Ebay.
He is staying at $400 firm

I talked him down to $400.
Should I move on this now?

I am having a devil of a time getting this work at all for Intellivision.
I am not even concerned about the emulator settings at this point. Heck, in the Device section of Windows 7, barely any of the buttons work.
I have gone step through step on everything.

Hey Ransom, I like your avatar.
The Adventures of Tron is a free download for Intellivision (so I am not breaking the ToS) but it does not come with the config file. Nostalgia (how ironic) requests that it needs a config file. Help me so I don't have to play the 2600 version!

I posted an ad in the wanted section.
http://www.atariage....i-800-c128-etc/
Meanwhile, if any of you know of a classic system deal or have one you want to sell me, PM me.
I am going to let the tide take me. Whatever comes up and presents itself as a good deal, will be the system I get.

I am looking for a classic computer system. I live in Los Angeles if you need to calculate shipping or plan a meeting.
I am mainly looking for these:
Commodore 128 with 1571 drive(s) and/or a Commodore monitor.
Atari 800 with drive and monitor
Apple IIe with drives, monitor.
I would prefer an Atari or Commodore. Please list all that you have.
Thanks!

Yes I just ordered an Atari 2600 style usb controller for my Atari 2600 and Commodore emulator needs.
But I still have this itch to create this awesome area in my garage. A desk, lamp, a strip of carpet, and a classic gaming computer.

This post came up while I was typing mine, and pretty much contains the exact same message. Well said sir.
Yes but he did not take into consideration the emulators. The trend in this topic has suddenly switched to the games. Games you can easily play on an emulator. I prefer the old games no question over the new ones. Its just that why should I use slower hardware over fast emulation? Or more importantly, why do some of you do it?

Atari 800XL vs C64: Best Versions of Games

My issue is this. I purchased a C128 with Ultimate II so I am beginning to wonder if I even need to spend more money on an SD solution for Atari and an Atari 800XL if the Commodore games make me happy?
