  1. I went the past three years. Looks like I won't be able to make it this year. Fun time though and I recommend it to anyone thinking about going.
  2. Right... because shoulder buttons work so much more fluidly I'm yet to come across a MK-1653 (in good shape) that has an "imprecise" D-pad. As soon as said SNES I knew why you had an issue with the MK-1653.
  3. Last night I played through a bit of Rolling Thunder 2. Fun game and aside from the arcade I think it's a Genesis exclusive.
  4. Everdrive would be a fantastic way to explore the Genesis. Although the games are MUCH cheaper than say the SNES they will, if you go for boxed versions(and why not) take up a bit more space than loose SNES carts. I picked up a SNES Everdrive a few months ago and its been fantastic. But also allowed me to basically start selling my SNES carts which are going for much more now than I initially paid for them.
  5. When was the last time you played Super Ghouls n' Ghosts back to back with Ghouls n' Ghosts on the Genesis? You're right when you say it wasn't as "arcade accurate" but it was an entirely different game. AFAIC that's like comparing two different Castlevania games on two different systems. But I ask when the last time you played the two back to back because I recently did and the Genesis game controls better if for not only because it lacks the terrible slow down that plagues Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. And I actually like Super G n' G but I couldn't say it was a better game than G n' G on the Genesis. Same for Contra Hard Corps vs Contra III. Two entirely different games. Now NHL '94 is the same. Favor goes to the Genesis. Again, no slow down on the Genesis whereas the SNES version is actually missing frames of animation. Zombies Ate My Neighbors is another example. This time I'd give the SNES the edge. They both play great but I like the screen layout of the SNES better. You're right about Mortal Kombat the SNES version was superior. But I'm not so sure about Street Fighter 2. Special Champion Edition lacked any of the SNES's slow down. It might not have been as colorful but it looked smoother frame rate wise. Regarding the controllers. I still think the plain old 3 button Genesis controller is more comfortable even today for my adult sized hands it fits better. Regarding the D pad? The SNES just used the old NES D Pad. It's always been easier to do the inbetween directional motions on the Genesis pads.
  6. Thanks. I think to those who are just getting their toes wet with retro games, quick internet searches, best of lists, youtube videos/channels, everything is pro SNES. I will admit as a kid growing up with both a NES and Genesis, when I did get back into retro games around 2008 I initially got back into it because I had an itch to play NES. Which led me to think well heck, the SNES has only got to be better right? So I went SNES before I retraced my roots back to the Genesis and started unearthing all the hidden, or never talked about gems when people cite the SNES over the Genesis. I think both consoles are must haves and my preference for the Genesis isn't a slam towards the SNES, but again I always find it funny when threads like this pop up regarding the Genesis, because you rarely see them relating to Nintendo consoles. Which really makes me thing the more people discover the Genesis the more the prices are gonna hike on that.
  7. You need to be convinced to buy a Genesis? The original 3 button controller is a nightmare? There are better ports on the SNES? Yikes! I hate to say it but it's thoughts like those that I truly believe keeps the Genesis's prices lower than the SNES. Which is a good thing for us Genesis lovers. I don't want debunk your myths because I feel the more that is done the more people will start actually buying for this console. But that said, this is a friendly forum and I gotta tell you man you're REALLY missing out if you're that blind to the Genesis. There have been some fantastic recommendations throughout this thread. You'll find the Genesis to be not only the most fun to collect for but I felt as a kid its top titles beat out Nintendo's top titles, and as an adult I'd much rather sit down and blast through a quality shooter on the Genesis than a RPG on the SNES. Although, they are beautiful I don't have time for those anymore.
  8. Great responses here. I have to agree with some of you in terms of how I collect now opposed to just 5or 6 years ago when I was out hunting on weekends at garage sales and hitting thrift stores after classes or work. I hate eBay with a passion. But it's all I use now. I don't have the time to go driving around on weekends looking for deals. They don't pay off with the wear and tear to my car plus the increase in gas prices in Chicago. If I want a game I just buy it on eBay now and I'm done with it. The other thing is us collectors who are now a bit older early 30s I'd say. Most of us got bitten by the retro bug sometime in college right? Most of us are now working full time jobs, have homes, and maybe even families. I don't have a family or own a house. But I work a lot and have other hobbies so my gaming time is VERY limited. And here's where the nostalgia theory of the original article's point falls apart for me. I didn't have the Thunder Force series as a kid. Heck I didn't even play shoot em ups. But now they take up 75% of my gaming time. They are quick, mind numbing, and let me forget about work for an hour or so. That said I still play through Sonic 1 ever Christmas for nostalgic reasons. But I'm just a nostalgic person in general. There's nothing wrong with being nostalgic. Just don't let it interfere with your real life right? In my opinion the original author had some series deeper issues than video games.
  9. Nice video man! High production level too! Nicely done. And here's proof I watched the entire video and I'm no just providing you lip service. The only thing you got wrong is saying, "Contra Hard Corps is an unplayable mess".
  10. I had yesterday off and played through Final Fight Guy on the SNES which is essentially Final Fight 1 on the SNES. It's beautiful and actually plays quicker than most SNES games w/ little to none of the famous SNES slow down. But you don't get many enemies on screen at once. The one thing missing from this game is the combo moves you get in SoR2. You know the forward forward attack button moves? So I'm agreeing with Cynicaster. Final Fight on the SNES is a bit more of just button mashing than SoR2 is. Final Fight 2 and 3 stepped up the combos though.
  11. I posted this over at Sega-16 but I know some of you don't have access there and I think it might be an interesting discussion here: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...f-retro-gaming I came across this article this evening. Now it's a little over a year old so maybe you have read it but I thought some might find it interesting. Now I pickup NES, SNES and Genesis games on eBay and I have to agree with the author. There is a certain rush about waiting for the game to come and trying it out the first time. But I wouldn't say I'm blinded by nostalgia as to some of these games I have never played before. I found some of the comments interesting. Being 31 I look back fondly on the 8 and 16 bit eras. But some it seems could careless. To the point of never wanting to revisit those games. What are your thoughts? Is it Nostalgia driving the hobby? Or just good games? I think it's a mix of both personally.
  12. Most Genesis tracks are forgettable? You must not have had much experience actually playing the Sega Genesis then? There's a current thread over at Sega-16 called "What Do you Consider the Very Best Piece of Music From Sega." There's a load of excellent tracks there and remember these are only games by Sega so we're not counting many many other good ones. Here's a link http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?26537-What-do-you-consider-the-very-best-piece-of-music-from-Sega Check it out! Now your theory about SoR 2 being forgettable due to it's release date might be a flawed. If you only had a Genesis growing up(I couldn't afford a SNES until I was in high school) you got Sor 2 released December 20, 1992 and Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition released September 28, 1993. The dates could be wrong they are from Wikipedia. But I will say from my own memory SoR2 was HUGE when it was released nobody caring is just an incorrect observation.
  13. I think it's the best of the 16 bit beat em ups. I love Final Fight and Turtles in Time on the SNES but they just aren't as polished as Streets of Rage. Now if Turtles in Time controlled like Hyperstone Heist it might knock SoR2 out of my #1 spot. That's the thing with SoR2 not only is beautiful looking and sounding. It plays REALLY well.
  14. So do you guys think in our lifetimes we'll run into a period where all the CRT's are pretty much dead? Will refurbishing 80,90s, and early 2000s CRTs be a lucrative enough thing for someone to do to keep our retro consoles paired with CRT TVs? Or will we have other means? maybe HD TVs will work better than they do now with the older consoles? I guess on the other hand our retro consoles could be dead in that time as well. Although keeping a Sega Genesis running for the next 50 years seems a bit more simple than the technology used to keep my late 90s CRT working.
  15. I'm 31 and have a Toshiba 20 inch FL screen. It gets the job done. I'd love a Sony Trinitron. I guess my big fear is will I out live the remaining CRT TVs?
  16. Yeah if you are seeing the lines (jailbars) that's not the RF static that's part of the video encoder. You'll notice those with RCA cables as well. They might even be stronger looking with the cleaner RCA signal.
  17. I have 3 model 1s (including my childhood original) and 2 model 2s. I only use the model 1s and have been thinking about selling off the model 2s. That said it took em awhile to locate the model 2s as to they are the 3/4 motherboards so I just keep hanging onto them.
  18. It all depends on which model Genesis you have when you go the RCA route. Early Model 1s will show vertical lines on some black and blue screens on certain TVs. Now early model ones are broken down into the non-TmSS models all the way up to the VA6 models(some of the VA6 models will not have the HD Graphics logo). The earliest model ones output the thickest most obvious lines on my TV. I had the coveted VA3 with the non-TmSS loading screen and it outputted a terrible picture. Your's may be different. The very last model one with the VA7 motherboard outputs the best picture but that's the one everyone says to stay away from due to the sound. Early model 2s will show jail bars on the screen like the NES Top Loader. Later model 2s will have a very sharp picture with no jailbars or the vertical lines. These are the 3/4 motherboards. That said, not all 3/4 motherboards are created equal as well. As to there are two types of 3/4 motherboards. You want the very last ones of those. That all said. I grew up with a late model one VA6, I had buddies that had the earlier model 1s, and some who had the model 2. Not one of us ever noticed any difference back then.
  19. I had a NES in the late 80s early 90s, then a Genesis in 1992. I got a PS1 in 1997 but rarely played anything but sports titles on it. I graduated high school in 2000 and didn't "game" until late 2007 when I got back into gaming. Why am I telling you this? Well in 2007 I found Contra, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, and Skate or Die II in my old NES collection. These were games that were not original to my collection. All I remember is picking them up at Funcoland when they were probably about 99 cents to $2.50. I remember buying them and thinking I had to because they were so cheap and they were games I always wanted as a kid. Odd thing is I can't remember if I was in jr. high or high school when I did this or for what reason I was even in Funcoland. I didn't do this with any other console. But that had to be my first touch of nostalgia. Or maybe not nostalgia but just me wanting games I thought were good.
  20. GTA 4 Ballad of Gay Tony (PS3) Contra 3 (SNES) Paper Boy 2 (SNES)
  21. Come on guys we aren't that old yet. Ali won his last belt when he was like 37...
  22. It would be a three way tie between the Genesis, SNES, and NES. The SNES would be the first to go and I couldn't pick between the NES or Genesis. Today its the NES.
  23. Skate or Die 1 was always fun with a friend. I have nostalgic ties to Skate or Die 2. I enjoy the first level and the second, but I usually turn it off around the third. Austin is right you need to upgrade your skateboard to make it a bit more playable.
  24. I'd say its a tie. Mario in 8-bit was fantastic. Sonic in 16-bit beats out the Mario offerings on the SNES. So then it comes down to do I prefer Mario on the NES or Sonic on the Genesis. I couldn't pick...
