  1. Yeah old news. The handling fee's really make it not worth it. I saw a Sega Genesis model 2 VA4 Majesco Model on there once. That's the one good thing about the Goodwill listings. Tons of pictures. So I grabbed it for like 10 or 15 bucks. They hosed me with shipping and handling fees it was over 50 bucks by the time I got it.
  2. This is one I didn't grow up with but got into after I started collecting for the Genesis again. Love it!
  3. My childhood Genesis was a model 1 VA-6. Never had an issue with it until I upgraded to a bigger CRT a few years ago. So I started tracking them all down. I've had pretty much every variation of the model 1 and you're right the VA-7 outputs the best picture. But the sound is noticeably worse. Best way to make a quick comparison is to hook a VA-7 up at the same time with any other model and run Sonic 1 on both consoles. Flip back and forth and listen to the sound when Sonic grabs a ring. My favorite model now atleast for my TV is the model 2 VA-4. Best sound and video output.
  4. I've got 3 Sega Genesis consoles. All different models. 2 NES 1 SNES Rarely play the SNES so I don't really need a backup.
  5. Yeah I'm over there too. With the same user name.
  6. I never have been depressed playing old video games. My dad died when I was 19 and this was way after the NES was popular. But I had a NES as a kid and used to play it with him. So there's potential there for it to make me sad, but for some reason it never really has. Sure some games remind of times I played them with him but its usually good memories. I still have my model 1 Genesis and copy of Sonic 1 that came with it on Christmas morning 1992. I guess I could turn those into sad memories too but I just tend to think about how good those days were and less about how some of those people have died. I probably had about 20 NES and 15 Genesis games as a kid. So there's a lot out there I haven't tried and have little nostalgia for. It sounds cliche to say this on a retrogaming board, but those games are as new and exciting to me as a real new game on a modern console should be.
  7. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - PS2 Contra - NES Cobra Triangle - NES
  8. Hmm. Maybe a NES with a new connector and a powerpak jammed into is the best way to go.
  9. I think I've always just liked NES games. I remember when Funcoland was blowing out NES games for 25 cents to a dollar and I picked a stack of em up. This was probably when I was a freshman in high school and the biggest thing going gaming wise was the N64 and PS1. For some odd reason at that point in time I still wanted to own those games. It certainly wasn't nostalgia at that point. I just knew they were good games. I put consoles down from the year 2001-2008. Around the time the retro craze caught up with my generation when retro inspired games were big on the Wii. I dug all my old consoles out and started playing again. Maybe there's a hint of nostalgia in there. But there's really nothing else like the NES out there.
  10. My elcheapo eBay replacement connector had such a tight death gripe on my carts I thought there's no way I'm gonna subject these old carts to this type of abuse. Also it wasn't a 100% thing still didn't work any better than a refurbed original. There are some lengthy threads over at nintendoage discussing the cheapness of the replacement connectors. Might also be a luck of the draw whether or not you get a good one.
  11. Don't replace your pin connectors. The replacements are worse than a refurbished original. Here's the info on pin bending. http://www.raphnet.net/electronique/nes_mod/fixnes.txt I broke one pin connector trying this. You don't need to bend them very much. Also scrub the hell out of it with a tooth brush soaked in alcohol. Once you get good at this I feel its a better alternative to the new replacement connectors. I got lucky and found a NES in the wild that fires up 95% percent of the time on the original pin connnector. It has absolutely no tight grip on the carts either. I don't know how I lucked out. My lock out chip is still enabled. When my magical pin connector finally starts to fail I'm going to try the boiling method. It sounds silly but most of the people who have tried it claim it works wonders. http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=63483
  12. Just learn how to fix a toaster. I wanted to retire my childhood NES so I got a few clones. They never sounded right and weren't compatable with the powerpak. So I got a Top Loader. The RF wasn't bad, it was the verticle lines present on the screen. I sold it for like 100 bucks on ebay and bought 3 Toasters. One I replaced the pin connector with a new one. I don't like the death grip on those so I put it on eBay. The second I tried the pin bending technique(google it) and that worked pretty good. The third for some reason was in really good shape. I just cleaned the original connector with rubbing alcohol and most of my games work first try. I've heard there is a technique where you boil the old connector and it gets it working like new and you don't have to bend the pins. I'll probably try that if this connector gets bad. The built in composite on the original toaster is a beautiful thing. I don't know why it's so good. My Genesis model ones aren't even that clean composite not my SNES model 1s. There's something beautiful about the original toaster... till this day.
  13. I like them both but I like Sonic more. I had a NES first and really loved Mario 1-3. Mario 2 is one of my favorite NES games. But it was Sonic 1 that made me want a Genesis more than the SNES. It's tough. Mario 2 and 3 on the NES are so good as is Sonic 1 and 2 on the Genesis.
  14. Wow! You're systems are in EXCELLENT shape. Very nice. Is that Joe from Sega-16?
  15. I like the powerstrip idea. My TV is currently hooked up to the powerstrip my adaptors go in and when I flip the switch the TV makes a weird noise, so I try not to do that too ften. I don't know why I'm in such a preservationist mood. Must be from listening to the Implant Games Podcast all weekend!
  16. I guess there is the clutter aspect to the 32x. The extra power adaptor is a little anoying. Do the rest of you unplug your adaptors when you aren't playing on the consoles. I used to leave them plugged in all the time as a kid but I figure it's best to unplug them these days.
  17. So I picked one up finally. Having owned a Genesis since 1991 I figured it was about time I got one. Now I'm new to the 32x library but right off the bat I've noticed this thing makes my Genesis games look much better. Gone are all the rainbow bands and verticle bars on certain blues and blacks. Anyone use one at all times? I'm thinking about just leaving this sucker in my Genesis at all times.
  18. I was using my NES MAX for 1943 and Gun.Smoke. But I'm not competing with anyone and my NES controllers are getting a bit worn so I thought I'd save some life on them by not having to mash down on the buttons over and over. I scored a lot of original NES controllers and have been using them now. I agree with Austin. There is a certain feel los to these games by using the auto-fire.
  19. I fired up Super G&G on my SNES Powerpak and really don't like it. I think the slowdown really plagues this one. I, like Austin, did grow up with a NES too so I should be used to that. But to be honest the NES never seemed to slow down as much as the SNES. Atleast in my choices of games. My title of choice from this series is the Genesis version. Not only a smoother frame rate but I feel the Genesis version controls better and yeah I like the verticle shooting too. I never played the NES, SNES or Genesis games from this series back in the day so althought I am the Genesisguy. No rose tinted nostaligia glasses shape my opinion.
  20. Read through this thread. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones I've had pretty much every variation of each model. My favorites are the very last model 2s with the VA4 motherboard. They have the best video encoder and sound just as good as the earliest model 1s I also like the video quality of the dreaded model 1 VA7. One thing to remember is plugging a 32x into these will make them all look a bit better. Your results will vary depending on your TV.
  21. SMB 3 by a landslide. I remember the hype surrounding that game. The commercials, the Nintendo Power issue. That game really showed what the NES could do. What an advance from the first one! SMW is a good game but it was just a bit different than SMB3. It wasn't such a big leap at that point. SMB3 had already done it for me. Not saying SMW is a bad game. On it's own its fantastic. Just in the context. I'd even pick SMB2 over SMW. SMW failed to draw me into the SNES and I choose a Genesis back in the day.
  22. Yeah I've had that happen before. The other big issue with model 2s are failing reset buttons.
  23. Ghosts and Goblins. Made it about half way through Stage 2. Dang this one is hard.
  24. I got Air Buster in the mail yesterday and played it a bit after work. I played it a lot while I was going through my Everdrive phase and decided I needed to have it again. Problem one of my top 5 shooters on the Genesis.
