  1. I was using an Everdrive on an original console. But then that started to feel like cheating so I sold it.
  2. Unless Zelda counts none. Does GTA San Andreas count? I've tried them in 8-bit and 16-bit forms and they bore me to no end.
  3. I've listened to a few of the allgengamers. They are hit or miss and sometimes are bit too morning rushhour zoo radioish for me(know what I mean?). The two who I feel bring the most older gaming related knowledge to that show is Gamester81 and Johnny Millenium. With Johnny leaving I wonder how Metal Jesus Rocks will do it. I've been a listener of the Retro League since their early shows. Hands down my favorite and I never miss a show. This summer I discovered the Implant Games podcast and I'm really enjoying that show too. Kris and Austin appear to be into the same types of retro games I am so they are really enjoyable for me.
  4. In that case, hacking in composite output is leaving it "intentionally inferior" too, because RGB is superior (i.e., hacking in a PC-10 PPU and an RGB amp). There are plenty of people who value originality over performance, especially when the performance difference isn't all that much and/or isn't critical by any means. I agree! There's a guy who sells modded top loaders on ebay. He does beautiful work and I've heard nothing but good things about his modded systems. That said I won't buy one. Everytime I see those listed I think, "there goes another one, from an already limited amount of these that has lost it's originality." I have a BA in history and a Masters in Library Science and Archiving so I'm probably more over the top preservationist than most. Maxim Recoil - you make one other good point and that is the performance isn't really all that different. I too believe the term "inferior" is a bit much when comparing he RF of the top loader to my RCA toaster. Only on games where there are large solid colors on screen do I notice the jailbars. The interesting thing about retro gamers is we all have various thresholds we'll cross or not cross with regards to how we play the original stuff.
  5. I have my NES hooked up via RCA and RF. Sometimes the RF just looks "right." The slightly fuzzier rounded over pixles draws at my nostalgia heart strings. It's kind of like how even though I bought a powerpak, I'd rather play Contra on my original cart then fire up the powerpak.
  6. I've got a NES and SNES Powerpak. Ordered them last month. No issues except the roms didn't work on the NES one. You gotta make sure you're getting clean roms with no headers. Aside from that. No issues thus far.
  7. +1 I have no issue sticking a NES or SNES powerpak in my original console. But for some reason clone consoles just don't feel right to me.
  8. I can't get into the SNES either. But moreso due to the SNES's library of games. Controller wise I think the Genesis 6-button controller presented 6 buttons in a better way. But feel wise the Genesis 3 button controller fits my adult hand the best today.
  9. You say just boil huh? No baking? How do you dry the wet connectors or is that a non-issue? I'd be afraid of residue leading to rust.
  10. I agree with you 100 percent. The NES Top-loader is a nice idea. I've bought them on two seperate occasions and yeah its nice having games work 100 percent of the time but those verticle lines on screen are terrible. Especially one once color backgrounds(which is a majority of NES games). I also agree with you on the Genesis 2. It fits perfectly on top of an original NES too! That's my retro duo!
  11. There is a certain skill to refurbishing the original 72 pin connector. I messed a few up in doing so but once you get those pins bent just right and cleaned the good old NES is the way to go.
  12. Love it! Remember renting it near the end of the NES lifespan and I eventually picked it up a few years ago at a retro game store. Awesome Awesome music! Great game play too.
  13. Yeah. I've had three NES Top Loaders over the past 3 years. I keep wanting them and then once I hook it up and see those terrible jailbars I go back to the original toaster.
  14. Tooth brush soaked in rubbing alcohol. Then once they are cleaned you'll probably have to rebend them slightly. I wrecked my first pic connector by over bending them. Once you get it down it's an art. I can make NES pin connectors fire up almost as good as Top Loaders.
  15. Run and Gun on the SNES? They all end up more like Walk and Gun. Sunset Riders is really good. Contra 3 plays clunky compared to the NES and Genesis versions. I got Super Star Wars and as soon as I started playing it I thought how much better this woulda ran on a Genesis. There are some levels were the slow down is so bad its like Super R Type. What are you going to Austin? A video or discuss SNES run and gunners on the podcast? I'm interested to hear. Shoot em ups and run and gunners are my favorite genres and usually the cheapest on the SNES as to I guess most SNES collectors aren't into those games. They are also cheaper than their Genesis counterparts, which makes me want to collect them, but I just get so let down with them once I start playing them.
  16. I hate Ninja Gaiden. I want to love it as to I love the NES and all the other difficult games, but there's something about Ninja Gaiden that just frustrates me to no end. Last one I played was Ninja Gaiden 2 after the guys on the Implant Games podcast had been talking about it. I made it all the way to the 2nd incarnation of the final boss and just gave up. That having to replay the whole last level everytime you die gets a bit old. I'm done with Gaiden... for good. Give me some Shinobi!
  17. Best: Original Toaster NES. I know lame. But it's so iconic. Worst: US SNES. The Super Famicom looked so cool, but here in the States we got that ugly grey box with the purple switches.
  18. I'm not a hater. I have a SNES too! NHL '94 runs smoother on the Genesis. The character animations are missing frames in that year's SNES release as well. That had nothing to do with better programmers working on the specific title, but more to do with the limitations of the hardware. Blast Processing was a marketing gimmick...a stupid one. Mode 7 was/is a real, now terribly dated looking graphical effect! Yuk! No thanks. SFII SCE on the Genesis is essentially the same game as SFII Turbo. Arguably with the 6 Button Genesis controller you get a better gaming experience. How fun is SF2 with shoulder buttons and the SNES d-pad! I own both titles but usually grab the Genesis version just because I don't have to mess with that controller. I remember when we called Contra style run and gun games "shooters" as well.
  19. Ninja Gaiden 2 on the NES. The respawning of enemies drains all the fun out of it for me.
  20. Back in the day I had a NES, then a Genesis, and a SNES near the end. I never really cared about the sound as to I had a crappy small TV with really bad speaker in it. It wasn't until I got back into gaming and played these on better TVs that I tool notice of the sounds. Overall I prefer the Genesis to the SNES. Street or Rage 2, Sonic 2, Midnight Resistance, Comix Zone, etc. All sounds really good. It's like the swansong for chiptunes and almost at a level of perfection. The SNES sounds weird to me. The orchestrated tones used in some games like Link to the Past sound like midi crap.
  21. You're right Super R-Type and Gradius III are good games but they aren't putting the SNES as the top of any "best console for shmups" lists. Later SNES games were also plagued with slow down too. Try NHL 97 on the SNES and then the Genesis. The SNES version is lacking frames of animation to keep up with the Genesis speed! Slow down and the SNES go together like bread and butter. I'll look closer at Axelay and Space Megaforce. I've got Axelay on my list of games to buy but the Mode 7 is a big turn off for me. Also just glancing over eBay they seem to be fairly expensive. Especially Space Megaforge. I still have to cite the Genesis or NES as better Shmup console.
  22. I'm relatively new to shoot em ups. As a long time run and gun genre fan I thought moving to shoot em ups would be a nice transition. I only have 4 consoles: NES, Genesis, SNES, and PS2. I'm liking the Genesis and the NES best and the SNES least. I only have Gradius III and Super R-Type on the SNES but the achilles heel that is the slow processor of the SNES really shows itself in those games.
  23. NES and Genesis for me. All the "great" SNES titles(a majority of them) are rooted in previous 8 bit titles on the NES. I always prefered the original Nintendo games(Mega Man, Zelda, Mario, Castlevania, Metriod, etc) to the SNES 16-bit conversions. The Genesis on the other hand brought "different" things to the table. But in some ways I feel it was more of a successor or atleast a spiritual successor to the great NES. That's tough to explain. But I can try to give an example. Renegade on the NES you beat up prostitutes and there are "beer" advertisments in the alleys. I feel the SNES was much more kiddy and colorful in its games. Where the Genesis retained that gritty early style, yet I do realize the Genesis had it share of "kiddie" games as well.
  24. Late 80s - Early 90s for me. The NES and Genesis were the most fun for me and there was that time period were they both overlapped.
