Now it's been awhile but in Comix Zone if you use a 3-button controller isn't there an animation of the character digging around in his pockets for the item you're trying to select? Again, it's been awhile but I think that animation is lost w/ the 6-button controller. I usually just have my 6-button hooked up. But I found the 3-button to be possibly the most comfortable video game controller for my now adult sized hands.

I still think NHL '94 is the best hockey video game. It's fun as 1 player but once you add a second you can really eat up a lot of time. Someone had mentioned Rambo and I think they meant Rambo III. It's actually a fun Run and Gun type game with a top dow perspective similar to that of the top down levels in Super C on the NES. Speaking of Run and Gun: Mercs is one of my favorite Genesis titles and I think it's deserving of the term, "really good". Midnight Resistance is another. It's a bit early in the Genesis life and the graphics look more like a REALLY good 8-bit. But if you aren't a graphics whore it's a lot of fun. Others may not consider it "really good". Austin mentioned X-Men 2 the Clone Wars. This is a kick ass game! I've been listening to the Implant Gaming podcast and they've mentioned Bio Hazard War on a few occasions. I really like this one. Great graphics and unique soundtrack.

SM's Top 100 NES/Famicom games that still matter
genesisguy replied to Satoshi Matrix's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Very interesting project! I just started my own NES blog and I'll be adding this to my links. Keep it going! -
I would recommend against sanding any of the contacts. The last thing you want to do is make them thinner. I have a replaced pin connector in my original toaster and although I use a Top Loader more now the success rate of the toaster with the new pin connector was about 90%. Just replace your pin connector with a new one and clean your cart contacts with alcohol. That should solve most of the issues.
-
I'm totally a top loader convert now I used to think I'd never get over the lines but I think they are worth it stock. Only some games really show the lines(at least on my TV). Instead of shelling out the 80-90 bucks for an AV modded top loader I think a old toaster with a new pin connector is a better solution. Those can be had super cheap. Sure the reliabilty even with the new connector isn't as high as the top loader, but just use it for those games that really show the lines. I have this out of whack alarmist preservationist theory that top loaders are actually better for your carts. Why? If you have a toaster with a new pin connector that has the death grip that has to cause extra friction on the carts pins that may be wearing them down. Also sliding those carts in and I know its not a repeat process but it will cause wear to the cart and the cart labels.

Ooops. My misinformation. My grandparents never played it. My grandpa bought 2 NES consoles in 1988 one for me and a second for all his out of town grandkids that would visit in the summertime. When we were cleaning out their house that was one of the things I grabbed. So although my original console is long gone. I consider this one to be the next best thing to my original. Plus its got the obvious sentimental attachments.

I had been using the toaster that sat relatively unused at my grandparents that they bought way back in 1988(my childhood toaster is long gone). Although it works well I was thinking it has too much sentimental value to be my daily driver and replaced it with a Top Loader so that would be a 1993 model.

When did game consoles reach their peak for you?
genesisguy replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The peak for me was the early days of 16-bit consoles when the NES was still pumping out good games along with the Genesis and SNES. I was in highschool or late jr. high when the PS1 and N64 came out. I got a PS1 but either it had to do with my age or the games I chose but that console never held my interest. I recently picked up Ps2 and have had fun playing GTA 3 and Vice City for the first time but even after awhile the charm with those games wanes as well. -
Controlling our collections in the age of emulators
genesisguy replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've been very careful about over collecting. It's been 18 months that I've gotten back into gaming. 18 months ago I lost my job, ran out of money and moved back to my mom's place. As much as that sucks, had I not moved back and started cleaning out the basement I wouldn't have found my old games. My NES Collection has grown to 26 games in that time, starting around 15 games 18 months ago. In that time my SNES collection doubled from about 15 to 31 and my Genesis collection from 20-50. Although not much compared to some of you guys the doubling in the size scares me, but I'm only buying games I really want to play, if it sucks I resell it on ebay. Who knows if it will double again in the next year and also moving out and back in with my girlfriend could pose a problem. She seems to support this, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to display all these games when the time comes. That said, since I've been spending money on games it's cut my drinking way down so it has made me healthier. -
Questions to those that collect video games
genesisguy replied to ddaniels's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Your wives should all be happy your spending your money on games. At the very least its a hobby you can enjoy at home. Point out your friends into fishing who drop 100s on lures that can be lost with any cast, and go away for hours on end to pursue their hobbies. How about the guys who go to strip clubs? At least your not hiding something from them I also wouldn't worry about what's going to happen to all that stuff when you die. Collect all you can and enjoy it while you can. You never know, you may not make it home from work one night. -
I got a Genesis model 1 in 1991 for Christmas which I still own. I recently bought a 2nd model 1 on ebay, this one is supposedly and older version and it says "high definition graphics" on the top of it. These are supposedly the ones with the best sound. I started off on a NES but moved to Sega and later went back to SNES in 1997 when they were cheap at Funcolands. from 1997-2007 I quit gaming and then for some reason I started collecting SNES games. Recently I've realized how much fun the Genesis console was and in a lot of online forums it's looked down upon as the #2 16 bit console. SNES had some really pretty graphics, but it suffers terribly from slow down that most Genesis games didn't have. I've also learned now as a collector that the Genesis versions of games usually come complete, and are always cheaper than their SNES counterparts. I love NHL '94

The 5 Greatest Game Systems of All Time
genesisguy replied to 8bitgamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
1. NES - This was my first console. I got it back in 1988 when I was 6 years old and I logged a lot of time on that machine. I still have many of my games and they all still work. 2. Sega Genesis - I got this when I was in third grade 1991ish. I remember just being blown away by the speed of Sonic. I logged a lot of time with this console too. Street Fighter 2, Streets of Rage 2, and countless EA Sports games were played on this with my friends. I still have my original Genesis console. 3(#1 Today). Super NES - I didn't have a SNES during the 16 bit console war. But I had a friend who had one and I remember having fun playing Starfox, EVO, Mario Kart. Now today in my mid-20s this is my favorite console, In everyway it beats the Genesis and I have a helluva a lotta fun collecting great games for it. 4. Playstation - I got one in highschool. I only played NHL 1999, but I logged a HELLUVA a lotta time on that game. 5. N64 - This was my sister's console. I enjoyed the first Zelda on it and WCW Monday Nitro. -
When Thrift store and flea marketing do you go alone?
genesisguy replied to brucebidder's topic in Atari 2600
My girlfriend lives about 20 miles from me and her home town has 3 thrifts. Luckily she's into it, not for games but vintage clothes. She actually found me a NES console for $1.75 last weekend. -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
genesisguy replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I found an original NES, just the console, at a local thrift store last weekend for $1.75. It said as is, and sure enough didn't work. I replaced the 72 pin connector and it works now. The only problem is it's lacking the flip cover for the cartridge entry -
Thanks for all the responses guys! Sorry for the long delay in a response. For some odd reason I can't get Atariage to load on my home computer, but here at work it's fine.

What gaming system do you mainly collect for?
genesisguy replied to homerwannabee's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm looking for SNES stuff, I found a BOX of Genesis sports games at a local thrift store last night, but I'm really trying to get SNES stuff just because that was the system I didn't have as a child. -
Hey everyone I've been getting back into my original NES and Genesis the past week, and I also just got a used SNES from an old buddy for free, I'm finding I'm liking the few SNES games I have most, the graphics were sweet on that thing. My last "new" console was a Play Station in highschool, which I bought back in 1998, that however is broken, and honestly those games of my teen years aren't as strong in my memory as the ones from my childhood and preteen years. How many of you guys are still using your old consoles? I just won a FC Twin on ebay. I was thinking that my old NES and SNES won't stand the test of time but they are running fine the past week so I'm thinking about selling the FC Twin before it even gets here. My question to all you guys is how much use do you get outta your SNES NES and Genesis? I've been looking online and have found there are ways to fix them when things go bad on your own too, so anyone do any of that? Was it easy?
