Cases break. A lot of my CD cases are cracked just from sitting on a shelf. I ripped them years ago so I don't use them. but there they are, cracked from disuse

... And idiots. Lol

But still, I have many CD cases where the hinges broke or the teeth that hold the CD in place broke, but I didn't just trash the whole thing... replacement cases have been for sale forever and even without the case, the CD Booklets makes a decent jacket to prevent against scuffs...
