  1. I agree that the prototype shows a lot of potential. I think it only came a bit too late, in the mid of the videogame crash, and being a port of a sort of "niche" arcade game, probably not a superseller, was cancelled or delayed and then scrapped.

It's a pity as Elevator Action is a little great game, if you ask me.

As a collector of arcade games and fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Taito stuff, I can tell you Elevator Action was huge in the arcades in the state. It did come dedicated and in kit form. And in '83 it was their #1 selling game for that year...

  2. Wow. a Math Gran Prix box. Nice. That's a toughie.

Took the words right out of my mouth!;)

I can look to see if I have any variations. I have every Sears' game boxed w/ the exception of Math Gran Prix.

Might be a bit... I'm in the beginning stages of moving.:/

  3. I can honestly say I can't remember the last time I've seen this offered for sale. People talk a lot about titles like Air Raid and how tough it is to come by, but just try finding the box for this. Good luck in your quest. I don't have it either and I've pretty much written this box off.

I can't speak for the collector's circle. The last one I had seen was on Ebay years back. I believe the winning bidder was from overseas. It's one of those auctions I had intentions of bidding a higher amount and completely forgotten about it!:/

  4. I'm down to my last Sears's game to complete this series excluding different varieties...

Looking for a Math Gran Prix boxed... would prefer a decent box, but could depend on condition...

Help me put the nail in the coffin for this title! I'm tired for waiting on Ebay for this, so hopefully someones needs $'s and has this!:)

  5. I sold a CIB on eBay back in May. $80. Started off around $130, then dropped the price $10-20 a week until it sold.

I was watching your auction for this particular title, since my Sears' Sub box is less than desirable.

That $80 - $90 seems to be the ball park price for this. I have seen some go for less but the box has seen better days...

Now to find me a boxed Sears' Math Gran Prix and I'm done!:/

  6.

I frequented Camelot Music BITD. I don't recall them ever selling video games. But then again, I was there to purchase 8-tracks and vinyl.

I remember Kay-Bee selling games. And I clearly remember the bargain bins when the video game crash happened.

Ours had games up till the crash. I remember they had these bins setup outside their store entrance w/ tons of games for sale. I distinctly recall picking up Frontline, Frankensteins Monster and Hero for $3.99 pop! *sigh* After that firesale they did away w/ the games.

Rip St. Charles Mall Camelot store

Back to Child's World, I had this flashback of picking one of these up probably one of the last time(s) I went there before their disappearance...

  7. I remember Camelot Music. We had one here in the mall till it became fye. Used to have a Kay-Bee toys store. Whatever happened to them? Are they still around? I pre-ordered my Dreamcast there in 99. I remember several years ago when they still had a few sealed 7800/2600 games leftover that they were trying to clear out.

I had to look it up. Looks like there were bought out by the parent company of the FYE stores in the late '90s. Kinda weird, since the Camelot we had went bellyup, it became a bookstore instead of another music store. Hmmmmm....

  8. I don't recall a Children's Palace , but I do remember a Child's World by a mall my parents used to frequent.

Definitely recall going there around the late '80s cause of the fact of I purchased some of my NES and SMS games at that particular store. I also to seem to recall they were slightly more expensive as compared to

Toys 'r us. Maybe that's why they folded?

That timeline seems about right to on when they cease to exist. The one I mentioned I don't think made it past 1990...

I always keep the price stickers on all my games... kinda of a blast from the past thing.

    Some notables:

    Zayres

    Service Merchandise

    Woolco

    Montgomery Ward

    Camelot Music

    Toys By Rizzi

    Venture

    McDades catalog house (Chicago area)

    to name a few....

  9. Love the video Jibjab!

Couple things I want to mention.. I had the Genesis I want to say a week or two after launch (thinking it was early Sept.) I bought three games: ThunderForce II, Last Battle and Super Thunder Blade. I wanted to get Space Harrier II at that time but was sold out.

I know you disliked the last two on your video from my list. And some of the complaints are justified BUT I am a fan of both - especially Last Battle. The game does somewhat have a learning curve and also somewhat have a redundant screen layout, but I

stuck w/ that game and once you get into it - I find it enjoyable. The thing w/ Super Thunder Blade that irked me was not within the controls and movement the copter itself, it's just a really short game (only 4 levels). I also want to mention the fourth stage music is awesome!

I do agree TFII was the cream of the crop at launch but my choice (my opinion) Tommy Lasorda was the worst to me. Not saying that it was bad BUT not having the MLB license was a real killer for me since I was a avid RBI player! Actually, I'll probably say it's a tie w/ Super Thunder Blade...

    Again, Great vid!

  10. Nice video--great detail, and previously I didn't actually know what the genesis launch titles were. Heck, of them, I've only spent time with altered beast. (mostly because of everybody back then saying how 'cool' it was)

One thing that that does get me a bit is that you said a couple times that the music and sound effects were awesome in these games.

I think these launch games are perfect examples of sega failure in that department. Off key tunes accompanied by digitized farts and out of place samples. I've never 'gotten' what's wrong with genesis sound. It seems to have a very similar hardware setup to a number of 16-bitters of the era with excellent abilities. After a few years some games came out that made the best of the genesis limitations, but I really don't see why it had any issue to start with. There must have been some kind of limitation because *SO MANY* genesis games fall into the 'bonk, blat, hiss, ting' school of music. Outside of having stereo sound, I've always thought of genesis as a solid step below most 8-bitters (master system aside, because wow was that bad)

I kinda see what you are saying in some respects... but ThunderForce II while the digitised speech is muffled I'll give that; the audio however in that game is absolutely stunning!

  11. $20k for this? I'm sorry but that's just silly. But then again some people's disposable income is a lot higher than others.

The die hard and avid Star Wars' collectors are nuts!

Over the past 10 years I really noticed there are some Star Wars collectors from Europe that have some really DEEP pockets! I have seen some items go for really crazy price from the vintage era. I would not be surprised

bit that the 'offer' came from on of these guys.

  12. THis is kinda of a tough question for me, cause I see both sides of the argument.

On thing I do stand by, if it's a homebrew and say there is a limited production run; I do agree the purchase cap is 1 per customer. (Now I know this is going to irk people who like playing a copy and have a copy for display, but from past experience I DO seeing people taking advantage of that situation.) I've seen it first hand as a late bloomer to the Vectrex scene.

It's weird, when it comes to flipping copies, I rather have the homebrewer himself get the extra profit rather than the buyer...

Of course this theory goes out the window if it's not a limited run.....
