  1. I agree that if there is an RPG gap in the Genesis library it makes sense that homebrews will mostly be RPGs. For me that's one of the many things I like about homebrews, is their ability to expand and diversify the library of a classic console. Plus I think it's nice to have deep games that players can invest their time on.

That said Beggar Prince looks awesome!

  2. 1. Smaller Size: Although the 5200 is great too look at it's immense size makes it difficult to work with on a daily basis especially if you just want to play a quick game, and the console overall takes up a lot of space. It would've been nice if Atari had released the 5200 Jr.

    2. Durable, self-centering joysticks.

    3. Compatibility with 2600/7800/Genesis controllers for more controller variety like the 2600.

    4. End labels on catridges.

    5. Original Games: The 5200 without a doubt has great arcade conversions but is short on truly original titles. The 2600, Intellivision, and Colecovision all had games unique to their systems.

  3. I've noticed that the image from my 4-switch woodgrain 2600 is not as clear as that from my 5200 or 7800. I've noticed it more in bright colorful games like Pitfall II, there seems to be some noticeable fuzziness in the picture it looks like lines or boxes of lines in the background. Nothing that gets in the way of gameplay or distorts the images, its just a bit distracting and things don't look as sharp. I'm not sure what the issue is although I know that I've never changed the RF cable since I've owned it (25 years), could it be time to replace the cable? I see the cable comes from inside the system, will I have to unscrew it and swap in a new one? Will any ole RF cable from Radio Shack do or is there a 2600-specific cable?

    Thanks!

This has been gone over before but you have to open the system to change it. Just any rca cable wont do. It has a short center pole and a regular one wont sit properly and will be loose. Find an rca cable with a short center or what I do is I use heavy duty RCA or Monster brand rca cable and cut the center pole down with a dremel. Also if the connector itself i long it wond let the top go back on. An rca type cable that has a 90degree end is easiest to use. Alos when I have this problen I take the rf shield off the board and use a small buffer wheel on a dremel to clean the oxidation off the area where it makes contact with the shield. Hope this helps.

Sorry about that I probably should've done a forum search. Thank you for your suggestions, I didn't realize that changing the RF cable on a 2600 is this involved. I've never used a dremel so I think I'll probably just get a 2600-specific RF cable which should make it a lot easier. I'll do a search on the forum so people don't have to repeat themselves, thanks!

  5. No... no.... no....

This is one system where emulation just does not cut it. It is awesome to turn out the lights in the room and watch the trail of your ship cross the screen. Vector lines on this machine is amazing. It can't be emulated like the real thing. It really cant.

Check out some videos if you get the chance. There is one somewhere with the Thrust Homebrew. Really really cool. Amazing, fun gameplay.

    Star Castle

    Polar Rescue...

and a few others I can't think of right now

    are really cool games.

A lot of the homebrews are great as well.

I found the Vectrex Thrust video, but I'll have to wait till I get home to watch it since I'm at work. Although I haven't been able to dedicate a chunk of time to playing Vectrex on MESS I did check out a few games just to see what they look like and although they looked different from anything I've seen I wasn't completely blown away. Then I saw a clip of the Angry Video Game Nerd playing Star Trek on the Vectrex and it looked completely different. It was full of bright colors and smooth animation. Definitely cooler that what I've seen on MESS.

I wanted to test some games out on emulation just to get a feel for the gameplay since the Vectrex is an expensive proposition and completely new to me.

I never even knew what the Vec was... until I went to a gaming convention around 5 years ago.

I played it for the first time and INSTANTLY fell in love with it. I thought it was the coolest thing there and promptly went home and bought one from ebay. And then traded for one here. I believe I got it from Crazy Climber. :)

I ended up selling it off with around 20+ games, and then re-bought everything later on when I found a deal with 20+ games all boxed.

Now I have almost everything. (aside from homebrews... and vecflash. I need one of those).

point of the post: try one out in person first, and you will see its charm! :)

It would be cool if I could try one out in person. I don't know of any video game conventions in the NYC area, although there are talks of doing a Penny Arcade Expo in NYC next year which I hope will provide an opportunity to play classic systems, although that is a year away.

There's a classic games shop that has a Vectrex, not sure if they'll hook it up and allow me to play but I can always ask. I'll find out how much they sell it for although I almost hate to find out...their prices are pretty high.

Although its just on emu, I've been impressed by Minestorm and found the voice synthesis in Spike (and the characters) to be cool.

  6. you've had more luck than me, i can't even get the games to run.

I was thinking I should feel lucky that at least I get to play the games, besides I figured if I had the console I probably wouldn't have all the overlays anyway, so this is closer to the real experience. But it would still be nice to see the colors. The games I've been able to run with no problem, although this guide is for an older version of MESS it's still fairly accurate:

    http://www.atariage.com/7800/emulation/mess_tutorial/

    Hope that helps!

  7. I've followed the instructions from the MESS Vectrex installation tutorial from Atari Age, and while I've gotten the games to play, I can't get the overlays to show. I'm using the latest version of MESS, version 0.127. I've tried almost everything, leaving the artwork zipped, unzipping it, nothing works. They're all in the appropriate .png format as well as being named exactly as the game files. Has anyone else experienced this?

  9. I received some 5200 games that I ordered at work about a month ago. I showed them to a coworker and that started off a conversation about old video games, and she then proceeded to ask me if I had or played a Vectrex. I was so shocked that she knew what it was. I must admit I've never given the Vectrex any sort of thought, I didn't like the idea that it had it's own monitor and you just couldn't plug it in to any TV. Although from the sounds of this conversation, I might just have to try them on an emulator since I've never even played a game with vector graphics.

  10. As for the dreaded controllers, well, they both work, and so do all the buttons. The Red fire buttons are too mushy, yes, but the problem is they are too unresponsive and slow. The same with the Analog stick. I had no problem with it not centering. The problem was it was not responsive and sensitive nor precise at all. This makes games like Super Breakout, Q*Bert, and Joust very difficult. Super Breakout, as many say, is simply unplayable with these. Centipede is next to impossible because the buttons don't respond enough for rapid fire.

There are a few more games I need to get, and a few I have in those lots that I feel wreak. I want to see how playable Miner 2049er, one of my favorite games, is on this. As a youngster, my cousin gave me an Atari 800 in the mid-80's, and I just couldn't stop playing that game. I don't feel like getting an 800 again, though.

I also got a 7800 last week, very cheap, off eBay. I find it nice, much easier to control than the 5200, better graphics, worse sound.

I got a 5200 recently and the controllers feel somewhat comfortable but they don't inspire a lot of confidence. The joystick itself feels weak and I feel like during an involved game of Pac-Man, I'm going to break it, not to mention that it is slow and unresponsive. So I do find that in fast games like Pac-Man the controllers are a bit of a drawback. I have Pac-Man Collection for the 7800 and find it much easier to control Pac-Man (I also like that with the 2600/7800 you get to plug in a variety of different controllers, my favorite being the Genesis pad) and on the 2600 version of Berzerk, it's the same thing, I lose the cool voices and sharper graphics but the control is tighter. Still the 5200 has a far more exciting library than the 7800. I almost wish the 5200 had been designed like the 7800 in terms of console size and the type of controllers it supports...

  11. I'm new to the Channel F also and I've noticed that its graphics are very unique, hard to describe, I don't think I've seen it in other systems. This is very impressive. It's amazing what programmers can do with this old systems that pushes them to their limits. Look forward to seeing the final product and any other games.

  12. It's very confusing, I think I'm going to have to set aside to figure all of the Channel F controls in MESS...luckily I found game instructions on a site so hopefully that'll help. One game I didn't have problems loading was that Pac-Man port. WOW! I haven't played many other Channel F games since I'm just discovering it now, but based off of the original games I saw on YouTube, this is most impressive! The Channel F has a unique graphics display and its cool to see a game like Pac-Man pulled off on it. Can't wait to see what other games programmers have in store for it.

  13. Here the bios at rapidshare :

    Channel F bios

Unzip the "channel F" directory in Mess "bios" directory.

Thank you! I've got it working...just need to figure out the system controls for some of the games, they seem a bit confusing. So far I've been able to play Alien Invasion.

  14. Hey everyone,

I want to play Channel F games in MESS, and it seems that I'm missing the BIOS roms: sl90025.rom and sl31254.rom...any idea of where I could find them? I'm curious to play this piece of video game history.

    Thanks!

  15. Info on robot city can be found on videopac forum

Review I wrote together with Steelballs an other collector, after i found 4 prototypes for the odyssey2.

    Robot city

Whit this game we had the most fun. The first level is not to easy but also not to hard. It's just right. The second level is allready a greater challenge. Sometimes it really looks as if the aliens are trying to close you in, and the futher you get it seems as if the aliens are working more and more together. We havent made it pas level 4 yet but it really is a adictive game. It also doesn't have + graphics, but it also doesn't need them to be a really great game.

This trully could be a game that is worth releasing.

I would also definitely agree that ROBOT CITY is worth considering as a release. Out of the three games we played it was by far the most enjoyable. On level 1 it seems like it's going to be very simple to progress quite far in the game but already in level 2 it becomes apparent that you really have to have a strategy to destroy all 4 opponents or they will eliminate you with ease.

Thank you for the link! I look forward to checking out the forum and learning more about Robot City. I'm new to the O2 scene. Robot City sounds cool.

  16. I just received 11 Atari 2600 games that I bought from him and they're in great condition. It was a smooth transaction all the way. Games arrived very quickly and packed with great care. He's also a very nice guy to boot. :)
