  1. What do you figure that rig cost back in '83 ? I'm guessing about $3000 1983 dollars adjusted for inflation would be almost $6500 in today's dollars! Ahhhhhh the sweet digital divide ...... I remember in high school there was maybe 10 people I knew that actually owned a computer ... atari , apple or otherwise.... " War Boarding " was the best in the old days at 300 baud ..... With a rig like this guy had back then I bet he felt like NASA !
  2. Here's a claasic Atari 800 setup that was on Digg: http://www.boingboing.net/images/BangfoAtarisdesk.jpg\ Looks like a typical power user in the early 80's ! complete with Star Wars Glassware and Sony trinotron ..... Man the good old days of 8 bit computing!
  3. You may just need to reseat the firmware. Look at the instructions for the Happy install and open the 1050 up confirming the connectors. I would also open the cage as if you were installing a Happy chip and push down on all seated chips that reside in the rf cage. http://www.atarimax.com/myide/documentatio...ppy_install.pdf
  4. Some old Atari print ads : http://www.aresluna.org/attached/computerh...rnational/atari
  5. Sounds like a program called : ALOG PAGEWRITER it would graphically display your page while you typed on the bottom part.
  6. Try : http://gury.atari8.info/details_software/1509.htm ALSO : http://gury.atari8.info/details_software/1511.htm The commands are pretty straight forward.... "C" to copy "P" for parameter change (Source, Destination, verify write) If you are using one drive just hit "C" If you have two happy drives switched to the chip change the destination to D2 using the "P" parameter change. Now version 1.2 of Archiver has the commands right at the top of the screen. When your ready to copy press "Start" A long time agao I had a real one for my 810 and maybe somewhere I have the docs for it... If I find them I'll scan them in.
  7. Try : http://gury.atari8.info/details_software/1509.htm ALSO : http://gury.atari8.info/details_software/1511.htm
  8. A very interesting observation, and probably one that will elicit some disagreement. It is difficult to imagine that the Happy V7.0/7.1 could not copy "Gumball" or any Atari software from 1983. When the original 810 Archiver came out, it clearly could copy things that an 810 Happy could not -- specifically disks that were "skew" protected. Happy always "caught up" with an update, but sometimes quite a few months after an "uncopyable" release had made its appearance. After a while, the Happy could copy "everything" that the Archiver could and more. Happy really didn't have trouble with protection until the mid to late 80's, and then they went to their "PDB" scheme. The Happy Archiver (810/1050) software programs are versions of the original Archiver, so that is the reasoning behind my statement that the Happy 7.X should be able to copy the software from 1983. Now the Super Archiver is a different matter. It clearly has better copying capabilities than any released Happy software. The Super Archiver is quite amazing. And in 1984 or so when the 810 Archiver came out, there were a whole lot of very surprised, (un)Happy owners. And this was a $100 copy system* versus around $200 for a Happy at the time. I have an original Gumball, and I'm very sure that it could be copied by the Happy Backup, way before 7.X. However, my original disk has gone bad, so I can't really test my assertion at this point. In the R7.X software, Happy put some of the options in the "Special Recovery Menu." Did you set any of the options in the "SRM?" Among the more important ones that I recall are Force Slow Mode Toggle and Skew Align. Many disks cannot be copied without setting these options. But like you, I think that the 1050 Happy Archiver is a really neat piece of software. It will easily copy stuff that you have to "diddle with" to copy on the Happy. And perhaps some folks don't know that *after* you have loaded the 1050 "Chip" software, then you can then boot the Super Archiver software giving your Happy-Archiver many of the same capabilities as the Super Archiver drive. Of these, my favorite is that the Super Archiver can use the extra memory of a 130XE, so there is usually no disk swapping, or at most one swap. However, it doesn't copy as fast as a real SA. So is the Archiver a better copier? Yes. Is the Happy a better drive enhancement? Absolutely. And the Happy Archiver software gives you the best of both worlds, and it's still sold new by B&C. -Larry No , I did not set any options... I just picked Happy Copier then Copy any Disk options and 'no' to the pdb files since I do not have any of those... I was very surprised when I tried to copy Gumball that it failed.... but I'll look at those options you talked about... My old copies of 50 Mission Crush and AI's Diskey copied with Happy but I was floored when it failed on Gumball.... The Happy upgrade as a whole is way better than just an icd doubler for sure... I just never owned a Happy drive back in the day and do not know its little nuisances but I do remember the archiver software and was thrilled to see it working via happy ... Is there any other Happy programs out there that are cool or better than the Happy copier itself ? P.S. I just tried the Happy Software with the 'F' option and the 'A' option (skew) and it indeed WORKED.... so you are right it will copy after all... just did not know how to set those options are why...... kinda wished Happy just set those to begin with.... Thanks
  9. I have a couple of drives with the Happy 1050 in them and noticed this : Take a true blue protected 1983 Broderbund Gumball disk Load Happy ver 7 or ver 6 copy software Copy disk with Happy software copy does not work... Gumball defeated Happy - a 1983 game mind you... Next: Load Happy to Chip software and turn my 1050 into ' the chip ' Load Archiver software ver 1.1 copy same protected disk with the archiver/chip setup via Happy hardware Copy WORKS I used to own an 810 with the Archiver chip way back in the day and always thought Happy was supposed to be better but maybe after all the years my memory escapes me... was the Chip better and the copier of choice ? I love the Archiver software the way its shows the sectors being read and flagged while the Happy copy any disk software is boring and uninformative... and then its asks for these info files that I have no access too.... So it seems to me that Happy hardware running chip/archiver is the way to go to recopy old protected stuff... yes ? Or am I missing better Happy copier software ? Thanks
  10. MYSTERY SOLVED ! Disk Doctor II appears to be Disk Wizard II from c.a.p. Maybe they sold it or something... but its definitely the program.... Pretty weird !
  11. What kind of cartridge is this ? http://flickr.com/photos/54726479@N00/2236568837/ Its called a CART-KEY Its a cartridge with a toggle switch on it... I do not know who made it nor do I have any software for it.... It came with an 800xl system I picked up on ebay so its not an atari 800 right cart product... The cart is black and has no company logos are markings but the case it came in says cart-key I did find a label in the box that must have peeled off the cart... it reads : CART-KEY Cartridge Duplicator for atari 400,800,600xl,800xl requires 48k Anyone ever use one of these ? I wonder how would it work on an atari 800xl with one cart slot.... but I'll have to look around and see if I can find the software that goes with it...
  12. I did open the case of the 800xl .... the only pots I saw were on the RF modulator .. there were none by the monitor out jack... Here's the funny part.... I screwed the case back on and now the colors are fine ! how about that ? I did not do anything but unscrew the case and examine it.... weird! Would those 2 pots on the rf modulator control color for the monitor out port ? it did not look like it when examining the board... Thanks for telling me about the pots because it caused me to open it and somehow fix it by screwing it back together....
  13. Thanks for all the links.... I was able to find Diskey but it will do only single density... Still looking for Disk Doctor 2 ... not the one that uses basic. Just out of curiosity does anyone have a link to any 130XE rom file for the atari emulator ? Thanks Try this one, without basic. Disk_Doctor_II.zip No its not that one either.... wow I guess a lot of people called their stuff disk doctor II.... The one I am looking for in .atr is made by S.E.S. Software it has a backup, editor, speed check, disassembler on the title screen. looks like this : http://flickr.com/photos/54726479@N00/2236540945/ I have the disk but because of its weird protection I cant make an atr or pro file out of it....
