      Kiwi

It uses music from Uninvited, Deja Vu, and Shadowgate for the NES.

  2. "Oh oh, Oh Organon, Destination: Armageddon."  At least you waited until the 3rd game before ruining the main theme for me, Deponia.

    1. Reaperman

      Reaperman

Much like the M.A.S.H. or SMB 1-1 theme--once you've heard the Deponia theme lyrics, they can't be unheard.

  3. "Your wishlist is full" -Jeepers, Nintendo. Can your eShop possibly suck more? The only reason I use the wishlist is because of your store layout&lag.

So the wishlist drama continues, as clearing even just the items I've already purchased from this wishlist is a hassle, as after a few, it starts me over at the beginning of the list.

  4. Swing your arms, from side to side. Come on, it's time to go. Do the Mario.

  5. 10hrs into Skies of Arcadia--still forcing it. Does it get better? I'm up to the forest islands.

This game got *huge* reviews BITD, but I'm still thinking it's more of a 6.5/10. Maybe that's my Grandia II fanboy showing...

    2. Ryan Witmer

      Ryan Witmer

I remember really liking it, but coming to the conclusion that it was just too easy.  I wouldn't mind replaying it, but my Dreamcast copy doesn't work anymore.

      GoldLeader

I remember wanting both of those games (Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II) but somehow I never bought either  :(

  6. 25k on the wife's GTI. It's previously thrown a clutch, and now it's 2nd bad wheel bearing. I miss the SAAB.

If you think that Mexican-built cars are bad, try any Chinese or Communist-bloc car. They make the worst Mexico has to offer look like '60s GM, AMC, and Rover.

I have always loved the look, feel, and design of VWs.  But they get such awful reliability ratings / customer satisfaction ratings, it's tragic.

IIRC the GTIs all need some sort of expensive maintenance every 40ish K miles (some part that always, always goes bad no matter what you do).  It's what had me end up going Toyota / Scion for my last hatch.  But damn I would love a nice GTI someday.

    4. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

125,000 miles on our Germexican 2012 Jetta TDI, and no complaints.  The car has been utterly bulletproof, with only a failed A/C compressor at 55,000 miles (covered under warranty) to mar its record.  In fairness to VW, they didn't make the compressor, so we just got the one bad one that came down the line that day.

@SlidellMan: speaking as someone who has owned Soviet- and Communist-bloc cars in the past (as well as a 1972 Rover P6), I would absolutely take one of those in a heartbeat over the garbage the Chinese motor industry is cranking out today.  It's appalling to see what China is getting away with selling in both their home and export markets.

  7. A downside of digital-only games is that when licensing deals end, games can't be purchased.

As a 'wait for the right price' gamer, I've been bit a few times by this. I'd rather not pirate software, since the online ecosystems have become a nicer experience, generally.

  8. A new Star Citizen alpha came out, but instead it's motivated me to go back to Freelancer, or maybe even Space Rogue.

    1. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

      ALPHA???? ?

    2. Reaperman

      Reaperman

yep, alpha--coming up on the 9th anniversary too. They don't have the flight model nailed down, don't have travel between systems, no tractor beams, and no interdiction mechanics outside of 'hope they don't run.' But they are on at least revision 3 of their ship insurance mechanics. fun.

  9. About to go into work @2300, so I can sit on a support phone bridge for probably 16 hrs, for (hopefully) somebody else's problem. Eh, it's a living.

  10. Anybody heard of the 'birthday spanking machine?' Probably a regional thing (grew up in WI), and folks I work with now did not get the reference.

    4. TheGameCollector

      TheGameCollector

Not birthday specific but the Spank-O-Matic is a spanking machine that was featured on the Howard Stern Show. Youtube had videos of his review of it a decade ago. I don't know if the video is still up there or not. I guess it depends on just how family friendly it is under Youtube's newer owner's guidelines.

  11. Anybody know how wide a sitdown Rush 2049 is?  And if all those midway/atari games cabs are the same size.

      Reaperman

cool, that's what I needed.  Somehow I forgot that kind of stuff goes on the fliers.

  12. Anybody know what causes the loud audio glitches on WC: Privateer? I see them on real hardware and MiSTer, with downloaded copies and retail.

    1. Reaperman

      Reaperman

I tried multiple real soundcards (kept buying them to fix it), and various SB spec combos, but I figured it was just a ghost in my MSDOS computer before also saw it on MiSTer. DOSBOX does not seem to have the issue.

  13. Anybody remember an MSDOS navigation utility that looked almost like 'tree' but allowed a highlight to be moved with the arrow keys, and the enter key changed to that directory?

    4. Reaperman

      Reaperman

It looks like one of the many xtree clones.  I don't remember it having directory stats to the side, or contents to the bottom, so one of the clones may have the option of turning off much of the xtree fluff.  Could easily be one of the ones in this section, or an earlier build of one:  (http://www.xtreefanpage.org/x63clone.htm#c-clones). I've been 'installing' games by the dozen on my dosbox (hyping myself up to buy the real deal) and the cycle of cd-dir-cd-dir to move between their setup programs has been getting to me when I know I can do better.

  14. Back from an annoying work trip, but won the rental lottery. Got upgraded from compact to Camaro SS convertible--first muscle car I've driven.

Drove kind of like a lazy pickup truck for 85% of pedal travel--and then all of a sudden it sounds like it's on the 1/2 mile oval on Saturday night.

  15. Come on Cruis'n Blast.  It's 9/14--when can I play? Maybe noon and midnight got mixed up for launch time

  16. Day 4 with my Rush 2049 cab. 500mi in. ~10mi races @$.50 a game=$25 of fun. Cost $1800,so about 35500mi before break-even point. Renting these per-race at the arcade suddenly started sounding like a fantastic bargain.

Now that is just Badass!  (Love it!) I just wish it would do a stunt mode...Still the most played thing ever on my Dreamcast!  Also, just throwing it out there, some nice ambient lighting (which you may have) works wonders for arcade cabs,  like lamps or spotlights/track lighting pointing at the walls with no overhead lights on...The machines come alive!!

    3. Reaperman

      Reaperman

I really should do some sound-reactive lighting projected from behind that marquee. As far as setting the mood, I often also run an arcade ambience soundtrack to keep it from feeling lonely. I kind of want to try hooking the dc version up to it. controls probably aren't worth the trouble, but sound and video would be pretty easy--it's basically a 27" vga monitor.

  17. Dear Nintendo: Fix your eshop. It's the slowest I've ever seen it. Every page times out, one gave a 404. +2 crashes, and still didn't manage all my purchases.

How is big N so bad at this? They're not even meeting my expectations for the freaking Ouya shop.

    2. digdugnate

      digdugnate

not being an apologist, but I think their infrastructure simply cannot handle the sheer amount of Christmas traffic from folks with either eshop cards or new switches/etc.

maybe it's time to update that ONE server their service sits on. ;)

I was able to buy one game on my new Switch yesterday before the eShop crashed. lol

  19. Did mobile gaming totally flop? Most of the current good games still seem to be from the 2012-2016 era.

Mobile gaming? That flopped on flip phones. All mobile gaming is a search for whales anyways.

    3. MrMaddog

      MrMaddog

They were a "thing" for a while but got killed off by all those IAPs they forced on people, nowadays companies crank out copies of the same games to get some whales looking for quick thrills hooked.

Apple could have had iOS as a premium mobile platform with games like Infinity Blade but people wanted the same cheap crap that Google provides.  Now the whole Apple Arcade idea is too little and too late, plus a total joke.

Maybe cloud streaming stuff like Xbox Game Pass will take off with mobile gamers and possibily there could be more demand for better phone games that run natively.

    4. Prosystemsearch

      Prosystemsearch

Yeah, most of the games that are above mediocre-okay in quality are from 2011-2016. Though, I have heard good things about Alien: Blackout, COD Mobile, and Garena Free Fire.

  20. Do the bird calls in Rush 2 indicate secrets/paths? I'm trying to learn the tracks ATM.

  21. Do you suppose older ethernet-linked arcade cabs could be VPN'd together for "link play" online?

  22. Does any retailer sell newish homebrew 7800 as roms? I've got an NT Mini, a long weekend, and a hankering for a system I don't play much.

Most of them are free on AA. You can donate $5 or $10 to the programmer for each if you want. Rikki and Vikki is cheap on Steam. The most recent set is Trebors 7800 ProPack v3_8 in its HHDP folder.

    2. Reaperman

      Reaperman

sure enough, that pack has the full beef drop all the way up through the popeye I was just looking at. fun will be had! I've owned rikki and vikki for some time, but never could get that .bin to do anything for me.

  23. Doin' time. Doin' time on The Rock.

  24. Every ridge racer game seems to have very different physics. RR64 gives me the choice of three of them, but I don't much care for the art style.

Rage Racer ticks all the boxes for me.  The rest I can live without.

    2. Reaperman

      Reaperman

I'd say revolution was my favorite. It was the last one with the brighter art style (excluding the bonus disc in type 4).

    3. Lord Innit

      Lord Innit

I really enjoyed Revolution when it came out, but since Rage got released I have never gone back to it. Maybe I should for a change of scenery, I still have my old copy hanging about somewhere.  Wonder if my old PS3 will play it ok.:/

  25. F-Zero X Climax hack is as fantastic as it is difficult. I placed 21st overall in Bronze Beginner GP with my highest finish being 7th, and two last place finishes.
