  1. The price on those prebuilt aliexpress gbs-c scalers got too low for me to ignore. I don't think I could make one for that.

Are they about $90 on there?  I actually saw one on eBay for just under $60!  Then again I'm pretty happy with my Retro Tink 2X Pro,  and I plan on buying the 5X next.

      Reaperman

Yep, it looks like I payed $55, which seems great value. It's faster than my old framemeister and seems to have some different specialties. I'd held off on the tinks/osscs since I'm moving more toward FPGAs with HDMI over scalers, but for that price I couldn't resist. Some day I'd like one of those 4k tinks, but not for many years.

  2. I'm good at overhead racers, but the entire 'F1 Circus' franchise has me beat. I just don't 'get' them.

      dudeguy

I love overhead racers. One that comes to mind is Super Off Road for the SNES. love the simple, single-screen design

  3. Woohoo. Analogue Duo arrived! I think I was probably the last one still waiting.

  4. Ugh. New car purchase day is finally over. Went with a Toyota GR86. Should last 15+ years, I wager.

@Reaperman WOW! What a sweet ride you purchased Reaper. Congratulations on your new vehicle bro. Hope it will give you many years of enjoyment. :)

  5. 'Battle Golfer Yui' --okay romhacking.net, you have my full attention.

  6. The games with 'Mature' ratings are usually the most juvenile

    2. BydoEmpire

      BydoEmpire

100%. It feels like there were a lot more actually mature games in the 80s, particularly all the SSI war games (Battle of Antietem, etc), flight sims from different eras, Submarine sims, etc.

    3. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

Those are Too Mature!  (I'm not an old guy in a deli complaining about soup).  I want some more kid games like Grand Theft Auto.

  7. Played MassEffect2 Demo BITD. Big cutscene, then rooms with BS shooting-gallery chest-high walls. Immediately quit series.

    1. Reaperman

      Reaperman

Fast-forward to yesterday. Bought Mass Effect Legendary Edition for $5.99, and it's a lot of game for that. But it's a 110gb download(!!), and I don't want to play for 10 min and quit out again. Is it chest high walls and cutscenes?

    2. LatchKeyKid

      LatchKeyKid

You're missing out then as it's got excellent gameplay and story.   In my opinion, the best in the trilogy.   But, yes, if you're not interested in a cover based 3rd person shooter then it's definitely not the game for you as that's the core of the combat gameplay.   It's more linear map-wise without the branching maps than the original but the tradeoff is much better graphics (at least on the original xbox 360 hardware).   Obviously 15 years later, the hardware isn't a rate limiting factor.

  8. Still no movement on the Analogue Duo. Not even to UPS yet. What they charge for shipping, it should come SpaceX orbital-direct.

    3. Reaperman

      Reaperman

yeah not even to UPS today. I guess I'll wait until sometime late next week before inquiring, but it's not like Analogue is going to have spares, so I probably get to wait for the feb batch

  9. The weird part of sending out ~150 holiday cards, is the yearly 'finding out of who is now dead.'

    1. Reaperman

      Reaperman

Logically, if I live to an average age, ~half the people I knew BITD should turn up dead before I do, adjusting that average up a bit for medical advances. But I run in circles that skew a bit older, probably including this circle, so the numbers have been higher.

Having access to public address records is a double edged sword. On one hand, it makes it easier to look up if people have moved or kicked the bucket before sending out a letter, on the other hand it gives criminals the same tools to plan their activities. I know Sweden is extreme when it comes to giving out personal information for free - I once identified a person online only based on their city of residence and the name of their dog - but as long as the information is used peacefully it lets me sort my personal address book before sending something.

  10. It's getting hard to home dry clean. I don't think the kids are doing it this generation, and products are getting scarce.

      bent_pin

How does a hall-effect sensor help?

    3. Reaperman

      Reaperman

Hall effect sticks shouldn't ever drift like modern controllers do, so they'll last more than a few years without needing a huge deadzone. original DC sticks used that tech, same with several other sticks of the era, but to my knowledge the retro fighter wireless is the first modern DC controller which features it.

  13. Why'd Darth Maul attack Qui-Gon at all?--especially the one on Tatooine, which really works against their plan. 😕

  16. New projector lamp day, but the screw stripped out, so I now have a bottle cap holding it in. 🤣

    2. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

At least you have a new lamp!  I tried to buy one for mine, an Epson from Back in the day,  and the one they sell doesn't fit!  They tell me that's the new replacement part and I had to send it back!

    3. Reaperman

      Reaperman

I've had decent luck buying the 'without housing' lamps and modifying old ones...wait no... don't do that, you'll eventually strip out the head on the screw. Then have to break it off and use a bottle cap to hold in the next one. 🤣

  17. The F-Zero in-fiction fans take the whole day off, pay extra for parking, and the whole race takes 1-3 minutes. 🤣

Cat's don't take fall damage unless they hit something on the way down. Really doesn't matter what height.

My oldest buddy got into a pan that I left uncovered and too hot and burned his little paw. Vet said keep it cleaned daily and smell it twice a day to make sure that it doesn't smell bad. Important to check if little dude's not better in a day or two.

      Hope all is well.

Likely source of injury located: Giant green fly taunting cats. Came out for dinner, but it has been eliminated after a 25 minute battle, and all cats seemed pleased.

  20. Today was an N64 day. Specifically extreme-G. I'd forgotten I like that soundtrack so much.

    1. SlidellMan

      SlidellMan

I love Extreme-G, and I'm glad that Acclaim had several hits on the N64. Too bad that they got lazy when they started developing for the Dreamcast and PS2. (With Extreme-G 3, XGRA, and Turok Evolution being the exceptions.)

    2. bent_pin

      bent_pin

My last N64 memory was playing Super Mario 64 on an emulator on my laptop while waiting to board a flight. I heard a little gasp behind me and turned to see a 5-year-old watching me play with stars in his eyes.

His father apologized and started to pull him away.

I told him that it was ok and that he could watch while we waited.

The dad said he'd probably try to bug me to watch during the flight which would board in 15 minutes.

I told the dad that it was ok, because I wasn't getting on their flight, rather I was an hour early for the next flight to board from that gate. So, I entertained the kid for about 15-20 minutes.

      Good times.

And Analogue is working on an FPGA N64!  Personally,  I think I'm good with just the one I already have,   though if any system could be improved for better output, maybe that'd be the one.

Kinda seems like the movie Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang might have had something similar,  but it's been too long...And there's an episode of Archer...Wolf of Wall Street,  Sin City maybe? ...Without waking up and thinking,  it could be damn near anything hahaha...

Turns out it really started coming together with an episode of robot chicken, and ep1 of my name is earl. It'd have been perfect for countless 80's comedies, though. The ones where the poor kids' ______ is being pressured by the rich kids one, who wants to buy them out. So they then engage in a thematic competition to see who gets to stay open.

The more I think about it, the further back it goes. Vergil wrote the Aeneid this way. This style was used by many to preserve history in song, again to capture interest with the shocking conclusion, and leading off what often turned out to be an epic.

I used to be in Appalachia along the eastern-most edge of the Mississippi's tributary system, but now I'm in Virginia's tidewater region. As the name implies, it sheds water to the ocean. Wish I could help, I love Nawlins.
