  1. The Thread I know, I know. I hate the "vs" threads too. But this one made my blood boil: "I think the intellivision is a better gaming machine. The intellivison has better graphics and better games. Half of the Atari 2600 has graphics that look as bad as the Channel F system. The sports games for the Atari look bad . The Programmers should have been fired. My favorite Intellivision games are Demon Attack, Burgertime, B 17 Bomber, Frog bog, Atlantis, and Utopia." I felt compelled to respond and defend the honor of the 2600 against such uneducated comments. Feel free to chime in.
  2. I don't have a problem with bumping old threads. After all, think of all the people who have joined the site in the past 8 years, and we are discussing a system that is over 30 years old. However, instead of new thread I would like to see these posts added to the pinned topic of the top 100 Atari games. Vote for your favorite 10 games, and the results are tallied into a top 100 list. That top 100 list hasn't been updated since 2007. That's why I never posted there... Well, if it's not being updated, and we are just going to start a new thread, then why have that one still pinned? Maybe that is a question for the moderators Is this one going to be compiled and updated?

  4. I am the complete opposite. I have all the Fox games, and Turmoil is my favorite by far. I love the crazy fast paced shooting of this game. Add the vivid colors and sounds, and it is great fun. I was surprised to see that some people really don't like it. I think it is a game that you either love or hate. Check out this review.
  5. Sounds like it is close to working. Have you tried scraping the contacts as I suggested? Basically find a razor, or small sharp knife, or anything that will fit, even a small pair of scissors, and get the top film off the contacts. You don't need to push/scrap very hard. I also scrap the silicon around the contacts because sometimes it swells enough to keep the metal from contacting. Once you scrap, swab off the contacts again with alcohol.
  6. Unless the PCB board is loose, no, I wouldn't recommend opening it. The contact doesn't have to be dead center, and sometimes when it is not, the cart will work. That is why I recommend moving its position slightly when plugged in.
  7. This is what I would recommend, make a $2 offer on this one: Turmoil Cart If you are really attached to the cart you have, try changing the position of the cart slightly in the Atari 2600. For example, push the cart all the way in, then pull the left corner up slightly. Try with the other side, etc. You can get more aggressive with the cleaning of the contacts. Try using a pink eraser. If that doesn't work, I have salvaged a few new-starters by scrapping the contacts and adjacent silicone with a razor. (Word of warning, I know some people on this site will consider that an act of vandalism that should be punishable by law. However, my scraped carts have not had any problems). If that doesn't work, refer to my first suggestion again.
  8. Outlaw and Mario Brothers haven't been mentioned. Both are good, simultaneous two-player games. Others: Quickstep and Motorodeo are a couple of my daughter's favorites (mainly because she can kick my butt). The vote for "best" has got to be Warlords.
  9. If that is an Easter egg, then how does a person get that ending? That would be one helluva Easter egg. Sadly the only way to get that ending is to have your wife cheat on you while you are out jumping across pits, scorpions, et al in real life. Either that or make one major hack of Pitfall.
  10. That is lame that you blow up: "Great job! Bang, you're dead." I really like the hacked version. It would make it worth it to play until 1,000,000 especially since there are virtually no 2600 games where you can actually win. It's depressing when you think about it -- you fight against increasingly hopeless odds until you are dead. ...ahhhh, yet isn't it a close proxy of life itself?...Atari, you have taught me so much about this world...MERRY THANKSGIVING! Actually, now that you mention it .... I am more depressed. HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

  13. You found the Pitfall Easter egg! Good job. Funny stuff.
  14. I have a couple paddles with rattles. No worries, just loose debris. If it bothers you, open up the back with a phillips screwdriver (it is easy and you won't break anything), and the loose piece will fall out.
  15. I find the Prolines very uncomfortable and gave up on them a long time ago. (And this coming from someone who likes the original CX-52 5200 controllers). My first choice for the 7800 is the classic CX40 joystick. For certain games, like Mario Brothers, I prefer the Europad. And for other games that need two buttons like Xevious or Ninja golf, I really like my Radica Space Invaders custom joystick. In a weird way, that is my Proline since it has its cable and resistors.
  16. Fair enough, you gave it a second chance, and everyone has different likes/dislikes. But I am surprised that it was not able to shake off the "sucks" rating. I don't feel the collision detection is that bad (but admittedly not perfect). For variety, enemies are different from screen to screen, multiply, speed up, and then become invisible. You also have different treasures falling from the sky. No points for the music? Did it at least shed the title of "steaming pile"?
  17. Just for grins, I tested Frogger II on my 7800, and it worked fine. Since you say it works on the 2600, I would venture that it is the version of your 7800. There were a couple system different releases. For example, Dark Chambers doesn't work on the early 7800 releases. Not aware of an issue with Frogger II, but it might explain it.
  18. But here is a similar, but better deal. After all, it is free shipping.
  19. Open them. Do it! Do it! Do it! How can something that feels so good, be wrong? Ohhhh boy, the feeling of opening something that has been sealed for 25 years and popping the cartridge into the slot for the first time.
  20. Yup. Right HERE from Best Electronics. I just ordered a pair a few months ago. They are new and work great, except the second fire button is placed quite right IMHO. It needs to be higher to allow for quick, natural movement when playing. And as Jaybird3rd points out, they are not good for most 2600 games. I bought them mainly for my 7800. However, there are some games like Mario Bros that these controllers lend themselves to very well.
  21. Call me crazy, but I still use the original 5200 joysticks. I recently got a Competition Pro, too. It is decent, but why so big? Can't miss those fire buttons. Once I got the gold dots on the 5200 sticks, I have been happy with them ever since.
  22. I agree mostly, except you didn't mention the original Atari dust cover. If it is in decent shape, those have consistently been going for $20+ on AA and eBay. Other factors have been mentioned such as condition, heavy sixer?, waterworld, protos that will affect price. I would be willing to go a little higher, $125 assuming the condition is good+.
  23. Sorry, but yes, that is what I do. There are still so many inexpensive units out there still that I just buy another one. I have sent several non-working units to the great ET Landfill in the sky.
  24. Sure, with some patience you might do better, but a couple years ago I spent about 30% more than that on a Motorodeo, Xenophobe, and Ikari NIB set from Mexico. And Mr. Hasselhoff, based on recent paparazzi pictures and reports, you really need to get to an AA meeting.
