I have, probably, two dozen standard Atari CX-40 joysticks. Seems like each has their own personality. Usually stiff is better because the really loose ones have been played a lot. But I have had a couple extra stiff CX-40s that were not responsive. Bottom line, you might be able to find a different one that plays better. Best Electronics has an upgraded original Atari joystick as well as alternative sticks. The CX-40 is still my favorite and is a classic. I would recommend picking up a Best Electronics gold CX-40 (I love mine) or a couple used ones on eBay/elsewhere to give them another chance.

Is there a game that you now like but didn't 20 years ago?
atari_envy replied to cvga's topic in Atari 2600
Blasphemy! Combat and Warlords. I thought they looked so lame back when I was a kid. But now I really enjoy the multi-player fun. -
I think the craziest one is getting over $13 for a boxed Combat that is a little banged up. He definitely did well getting top dollar for most of his stuff. However, I don't feel it is crazy money for the following (maybe at the upper end of the band, but not crazy). Crackpots $28.50 shipped (That is roughly what I paid for mine). http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIG-OWNER-BOXED-ATARI-2600-GAME-CRACKPOTS-MIB_W0QQitemZ300373131316QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Vintage_Video_Games?hash=item45efa24034 Dolphin $18.00 shipped (Best deal of the bunch). http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIG-OWNER-BOXED-ATARI-2600-GAME-DOLPHIN-MIB_W0QQitemZ300373130643QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Vintage_Video_Games?hash=item45efa23d93 Laser Gates $43.40 Shipped (This one can be hard to find, I paid about $33 for mine). http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIG-OWNER-BOXED-ATARI-2600-GAME-LASER-GATES-MIB_W0QQitemZ300373130157QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Vintage_Video_Games?hash=item45efa23bad No Escape $15.00 shipped ($10-$15 seems to be a pretty standard going rate on eBay for nice CIB common Imagic games) http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIG-OWNER-BOXED-ATARI-2600-GAME-NO-ESCAPE-MIB_W0QQitemZ300373129753QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Vintage_Video_Games?hash=item45efa23a19 I watched his auction, curious to see what Quadrun would go for. Wow, it's a huge premium for that box. I got my Quadrun and manual for $240 not too long ago.

I have Mythicon Sorcerer and like it. It gets fairly regular play. Much more than Slot Machine, Basic Math, Slot Racers, 3-D Tic Tac Toe and some other Atari branded games. The The Video Game Critic even goes so far as to state that "this rare game is a gem." Not perfect, true, but very playable. Wow, okay, I'll give it another chance. I should have my 2600 hooked up again in a few days. I probably played the other junk games first and maybe didn't give Sorcerer enough of a chance. Maybe. BTW, I didn't mean that all Atari-brand games were "fun", just that they aren't as crudely programmed. The Mythicon games I recall playing were so unpolished and unplayable it was ridiculous. At least Basic Math is playable, even if you don't want to play it! I will concede that the other two Mythicon games are bad, and I don't play them. But I am glad you are willing to give this one a chance. Sorcerer isn't perfect -- I think The VGC does a good job at pointing out its shortcomings -- but it is different, playable, and fun (which I admint is relative to the gamer). The music is a nice touch that is absent in most games of the time, and you will be surprised by the variety of creatures to battle. It is apparent that a lot of effort went into this one. Maybe Mythicon's thought was that if they could make the first one good, people would pay for the substandard sequels (kinda like the movie industry today). Make sure you jump on the little flying disc at the beginning (They should have done away with the whole jump-on-the-disc-challenge)

Yes. The first cart I bought worked great on my 7800, 4-switch and 6-switch. But not on either of my heavy sixers. Albert was kind enough to send me a new cart that works on my sixer (my main gaming machine) but it does not work on any other. But that is fine, and I appreciate him taking the time to quickly send a cart that works on my main machine. Can anyone explain why one cart works only with the heavy sixer and another works only with four-switch units? I have both types of machines, but have never seen another VCS cartridge in existence that only worked with a certain type of Atari/Sears console. Since I own both types of systems, would I have to pay for two separate games in order to guarantee playable carts for all consoles? I don't think anyone can explain based on the PMs exchanged when I first had this problem. Right now the consensus is that this is unique to me (although that seems odd since I have two heavy sixers with the same issue). But the fact that I have had another minor issue, lends credibility that I might be unique since this has not been seen by anyone else. It is interesting to note, though, that this same cart, when plugged into my 7800 does not work -- just two tan, vertical lines on the screen. However, the first cart worked like a champ on my 7800 and 4-switch. I know. It should not be the case. I brought this up in the hopes that someone else had the same problem or could explain, and it hasn't been the case. I do not have any other problems with my current collection of over 325 games, including the home brews Star Fire, Space Instigators, and Juno First. I am hoping that someone like yourself will buy the game and confirm that it is indeed me, that you can switch between heavy to light to 7800.

The vector games (Lunar Lander, Battlezone, and Asteroids) are great! However, I do not care for the Flash version of the others.

AFAIK there is no issue with 7800's. I know several people who have it that use a 7800. According to Al, there are lots of Dungeon carts floating around out there now and there has only been one person that is known to have had a issue. Speaking of which.... The "super" monster thing is not part of the game and not normal. Sounds like the program may be getting semi-corrupted some of the time. I'm not sure what to tell you since this is the replacement cart. Seems like there is something about the combination of your hardware and the cart that just isn't playing nice. I hate being the problem child Honestly, I am good though. That is the only time I have seen it happen with the new or previous cart after numerous plays. And the second incident happened right after hitting the reset switch and starting again. If I see it again, I will use the run option or just re-power the system. Like I said, was able to get through the entire game last night without issue.

Just killed the dragon, then a bit later, the demon and saw the finale with the Princess. Very cool Fun game. LOTS of levels plus secret rooms -- that is awesome for the 2600. I had fun mapping out the lower levels. Per my previous post: I played another game and ran into a slime with over 20 hit points before running away. Turned the system off, then on, and it seemed to clear the "super" monsters. In the future I will know better how to handle.

Super Zombies? I just ran into a Zombie with over 30 hit points. At least that is how much I did (32) before my character died. I hit him with normal attacks, then lightening, then Excalibur. In the end I died of poison when my spell points ran out. I had 12 hit points before engaging. Seems a little hard.... It was on level two just after I advanced a level.

I am somewhat interested, but that is a pretty hefty starting bid based on the Mexico sales a while back. I dunno -- what are these carts worth? It is a "10" rarity, but this cart doesn't seem to garner the 4 digit bids like some other 10s. I will watch and think about it, but unless I get some extra cash this week, probably a pass for me.

(Still laughing about the melting down "breaking news"). I have bought four Best Electronics gold contact joysticks. I love them and have been using them for about 2 years now without issue. It is worth the money. The previous comment about sending them trade-ins is right. 1) It costs about that much to mail them anyway and 2) Much to my irkness, they don't send you back your joysticks but ones they already have done. This isn't such a big deal except the ones I sent were in mint condition and what I got back (one in particular) was not. But they are VERY fast turning around orders.

Didn't you hear -- Best is selling all their 5200 gold controller parts for scrap! Whet reputable source did this news come from? I bought flex circuits and pots from Best a couple months back and nothing was mentioned. It's in all of them -- the Enquirer, the Star, People Magazine, US Weekly. All the reputable sources are talking about this. Even Geraldo Rivera! Or maybe it is just a sarcastic rumor based on this thread: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/152849-holy-f%23-super-massive-lot-need-advice/

I know... every place I go its the same thing... absolute shit. It could be worse. You could live in the same hometown as the owner of http://www.atari2600.com. It is like a black hole for Atari stuff in the area -- anything good just gets sucked right into his store. I have consigned myself to buying from him instead of trying to find something in the wild. Well, him and eBay. It is an expen$ive way to build a collection.

This whole thread is an interesting chapter (epilogue?) in Atari's history.... Anyway, thanks for trying to save them.

I wasn't directing that at you, per se, probably shouldn't have quoted your message. It was just a general call for reviews. ..Al I see what you mean. There are very few reviews out there for some of these games. I will try to review the ones I've picked up so far. Is there any criteria that we should use? Should we review them based on the other games available for the system, or is it just what we like to play? I read the reviews here and elsewhere before I buy a game, but I think one has to take the reviews here with a grain of salt because there is a lot of love for this site and it's selling the games. Even at $25 I look at these games as gifts. New 2600 games, you know. A game would have to be pretty crappy to get < a 4. So far all the games I've picked up have been outstanding though. I have both, and I like both equally for different reasons. I am relatively new to homebrews, and it still seems odd playing new games for an old system since the Atari experience for me is mostly about nostalgia. I have considered doing a review but am hesitant because it seems that "4/4" and gushing praise is the norm, and I am afraid anything less would be considered an insult (e.g. See above: "A game would have to be pretty crappy to get < a 4"). I think suffice to say, all the homebrews in the AA store are fun and worth the money.

The time and money you spent will be recovered many times over because the game will attract more interest now that it is shown to be working.

And my game console is nearly 33 years old dude.

+1. Rubbing alcohol, eraser and/or light scrap with an exacto knife has fixed 9/10 of my problem carts. If there is one cart that has given me trouble, it's Robot Tank.

A few more boxed and sealed 2600 games for sale.
atari_envy replied to godsey1's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Got mine today. Very well packed. The Superman box is in outstanding shape, a definite upgrade. I like the clear cases included, too. Thanks! -
Homer, Looks like you might be updating your list again because there is another Air Raid on the bidding block: Air Raid Auction What kills me is that he is trying to sell an ultra rare game for thousands of dollars, but isn't willing to borrow or buy a system to test this cart so to increase its value.
