  1. Quest for Quintana Roo by Sunrise:

    Gray box numbered 1603

    Silver labeled cart

Typed instruction sheet, folded in quadrants.

This is what I found in the boxes on all these. They were not sealed.

If I remember right, I got Quest by Telegames new, but the shrinkwrap was so bad that I discarded it. Here is what it has, there aren't many number designations:

Quest for Quintana Roo by Telegames:

Box numbered 6057 A227 (first number on top, not sure which, or both, is the number)

    Silver cart

Typed instruction sheet, folded in quadrants

    Telegames silver cover catalog

I have Frogs and Flies NIB on the way, I will report when I receive.

I have these CIB, but did not receive in shrinkwrap:

KOOL-Aid Man, Game c1983 Singapore black label w\blue text, Manual color stapled 4648-0950-G1, Box No. 4648-0210, no inserts

Note on Armor Ambush: Based on another copy I have, it appears that non-USA versions don't have the "G2" on the manual, are folded correctly and come with inserts. The two versions also have different addresses for warranty service.

I didn't open this one myself, but my other CIB:

Armor Ambush, Game c1982 Korea black label w\blue text, Manual tri-fold color 5661-0950, Box No. 5661-0410, Catalog 0151-0050, FREE DECAL Card 0151-0060

Note on Super Challenge Baseball: This has a sticker over the "made in" location, it is japan, korea, etc. I strongly suspect it used to say USA.

  5. I am a good candidate to help since I often buy games that are new in shrinkwrap and at some point will cut open the top to play the game (oh, the horror!).

I will list the ones that I have opened, and as I open new ones, I will post the contents. (There are a few sacred enough that I might not ever open, Motezumas Revenge comes to mind).

Note: I started on this and realized it was a little more time consuming than expected, so I am going to just do multiple posts as I am able.

Question: I am working on my M-Network games first since I bought most of them new in shrinkwrap. You list the box number with a dash and an additional number, but I don't see the dashed number anywhere on the box? (e.g. astroblast)

The box number on some of these games can be found on the bottom flap of the box. :)

Ahhh Haaa! Inside part of the flap. I was only looking at the outside. I will post my M Network stuff in the next hour.

A personal bitch about M Network games new in shrinkwrap: About half the time, the inside of the game box is upside down (game holder), meaning the cart holder is at the bottom of the box and the only way to get the cart out is through the bottom (at least without damaging the box). This means to retain the shrinkwrap, I have to carefully slide it off, get the cart out the bottom and then slide the wrap back on. grrrrr

  7. When we got our first Atari with Space Invaders back in the day we had one of those ugly console TVs in the living room. Maybe 27-inches? The TV I most remember from my Atari days is the one I bought in 83/84 with my first job monies. It was a sweet 13-inch color TV from Sears with one dial for VHF and one dial for UHF.

Gawd, I would LOVE one of those big "ugly" console TVs for my Atari.   What a perfect marriage that would be for my heavy sixer with the faux wood trim.

  8. Wow, didn't realize I had something rare, having both overlays. I scanned them in as pdfs (600dpi) so you have something until you get your hands on the original. These should be easier to print correctly than a jpg.

NOTE: When printing, turn off any Page Scaling (i.e. set to None) so it prints out true to the original size. You will need 14" long paper to print the "both" scan. 8.5" x 11" paper will work for 6-switch scan.

    Happy flying.

  9. I recently bought an INTV because my favorite old-school game is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. (Gawd, I love that game). Other than AD&D, I never plaved much INTV as a kid. So I decided to pick up some INTV games and give it a whirl. I still remember the Inty commercials showing how absolutely lame and archaic the 2600 looked in comparison to the INTV. Based on the power of advertising and my love of the AD&D game, I thought I might actually like the INTV better.

Wow, I could not have been more wrong. Maybe it is the nostalgia factor, but i just couldn't get hooked playing the INTV. And the those short-corded, weird-disc, uncomfortable, permanently attached controllers -- yuck! I got a pair of Stickler joystick attachments to help a little.

INTV is great for the adventure games: AD&D, Thunder Castle, Tower of Doom, etc. Hands-down those beat anything the 2600 has. Sure, Burgertime looks better on the Inty. But for every Burgertime, there are many other games where the Atari is as good or better. And when taken in their entirety, it's really hard to compete with the 2600's HUGE library. For me it is all about the classic (and removable) joysticks, the sounds, and the quick gameplay of the 2600.

  10. How about any of the Swordquest games? Pretty good front artwork.... :ponder:

It really is too bad. Atari obviously put a lot of effort into the Swordquest series. The box looked great, the comic was awesome, the series concept was good, and the contest was intriguing. Then you fire up the game with high expectations, see a cool intro screen, and *splat* the game falls flat on its face.

  11. I just pick my spots. I decided to get a CIB collection of Activision. Looks cool on my shelf, people are familiar with them, and for the most part affordable. Same goes for my Atari colored box collection. But as for the Atari silver carts, it's a little of both. For example, $100+ for Waterworld cart, manuals, comic book = ok. But the premium for that box is beyond my interest. Same can be said for Quadrun -- I own only the cart and manual. However, I own a lot of other silvers that are CIB.

I picked up all the Mattel CIB because it was pretty easy (still missing the box for Star Strike, tho). But I opted to get all the 20th Century Fox games with cart and manual only, the boxes didn't do much for me. And list goes on. Some CIB, some cart and manual.

I enjoy looking at the box, opening it up to get the game, looking at the flyers, catalogs, etc that come with it. In the case of Activision, I store the patch in the box. All of that is part of the fun of owning it.

  12. Journey escape is not bad but it is far to easy. You can basically play it as long as you can stay awake. I have debated going for Todd Rogers 3-day marathon record but I doubt I'll ever have the time :)

Alright, you caught me on that one, it is a bit too easy. Like you mention, once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much play for as long as you like. But the same can be said for other games (Pac_Man and Pengo come to mind). I just don't feel it deserves to be lumped in with the likes of Airlock, Warplock, and SSSnake. I would have been p***ed if I had shelled out $ for those games back in the day.

Thanks to you and Skylark68 for the bump on Journey. Maybe I am not quite as crazy as I thought. ;)

  13. I got my VCS out this weekend and found I was slightly disappointed with some of the games I had such fond memories of as a kid......

...I'm glad I got it out as I played some really decent games, sadly I'm not a kid anymore

For me it is the opposite. In a lot of ways, I love the Atari 2600 more as an adult than as a kid. The games are still fun and now there is a nostalgia factor. Playing these old games reminds me of how fun it was being a kid. What a great period of imagination in my life playing games on the Atari 2600, TRS-80, C-64, Apple II and being a part of the original Star Wars trilogy.

As mentioned by others, it is an escape from (today's) reality. I may not be a kid anymore, but I can feel like one when I play the 2600.

  14. Frankenstein's Monster is Data Age's best game too. I don't mind it; The rest of the Data Age games suck a lot though.

Am I the only person on the planet who likes DataAge's "Journey"? It is a unique concept, has actual Journey music on Atari 2600 (ok a little off key, but a decent effort), and solid gameplay. But maybe I am the crazy one, b/c every review says it sucks. Frankenstein's Monster is DataAge's best. That is an outstanding game.

Flag Capture, Slot Racers, and Maze Craze: 2 players=lots of fun. 1 player=lame.

  15. Cartridge Instructions Box :)

I always thought that was Complete In Box.

    :ponder:

Hmmm. If it's "Cartridge Instructions Box" what would "NIB" be? Possibly a case of: You say po-TAE-toe, I say po-TAH-toe.

I am really TRYING to like Circus Atari. Help me out. Is there a particular game number that is better or is there a trick? I get frustrated by always splatting right next to the trampoline. I do like the game sounds and watching the little Atari dude fly through the air.

However, as it stands right now, given the choice of similar games, I prefer Super Breakout.

  16. I was wondering if somebody was going to bring up this commercial on the forums! I was watching the Jets game in between dozing off and on on the couch. According to my wife, I was sound asleep when I awoke suddenly to the Atari/Lexus commercial, yelling about the Atari in it! :D When I'm sleeping, nothing can get my attention, but I guess I'm programmed to wake up for old game sounds. I've been in this hobby for too long...

    Great commercial, BTW!

lol. I was watching the same game when I saw this commercial for the first time.

Ohhhh yeah. The feeling of getting the best gift ever for Christmas, especially an Atari 2600. Never got the Atari for Christmas *sniff* but I dreamed of it many times.

I didn't notice the 6 to 4 switch change-up. My thoughts were "Wow, they got a heavy sixer for the commercial. Someone knows their stuff!" But then he was playing Centipede, so then I thought, "No way, Centipede wasn't released yet."

I frankly choose to believe that man in the commercial realized/or-will-realize that ultimately the Atari was the best gift.

  17. I've used a fine sandpaper to clean up the contacts. It should go without saying that you need to be be VERY careful doing this. Your just trying to lightly clean the contacts not grind rust off your rocker panels. :)

After doing this you'll want to clean any dust off the contacts before using the game.

A well-worn Scotch-Brite pad is a bit less abrasive and has worked well for me. I clip a small piece into a hemostat to be able to reach in to the recess with it. I treat the cleaned surface with Deoxit. Haven't had to reclean any of them. We'll see how they do in 25 or 30 more years.

(Don't read if you are faint of heart). I use a little more brute force. I take a razor blade and scrape the contacts. It is very common to have crude flake off especially if the cart was stored loose. I have also noticed that sometimes the board where the contacts are seated has expanded, especially right at the end. In that case, I scrape the board to help level it with the contacts.

Afterward, I wipe firmly with 90% alcohol and a Q-tip, then buff with a cotton rag. The result is nice and shiny contacts.

I know some of you might might be recoiling in horror at treating a cart this way. But I have found that these old carts are amazingly tough. I have never had a cart that was working stop working after I cleaned it. On the contrary, I have raised many carts from the dead using this method. I recently got a Pitfall II 5200 cart that was DOA ("CIB. Excellent shape. Works!" according to the eBay seller. He failed to mention the water damage at the bottom of the box and the mold growing inside -- I kid you not). After about 15 minutes of progressively aggressive scraping, cleaning and testing, the cart did indeed work.

EDIT: How ironic. I typed this before seeing the above post. Obviously two diametrically opposed points of view. Your cart, your decision.

  18. I'm pretty sure that splitter will not work.

It won't. Unless you considering 'working' to mean making a more godawful mess of the video than RF does on its own already. ;)

Agreed. They work, but the interference is terrible. I tried it and went to a switchbox from home depot. You can pick them up at other places too.

  19. Program a computer? A game? Your VCR?

I'm going to assume your rather vague request deals with Atari 2600 Programming. Well, you're in luck! There's a forum here at AA named - you guessed it - Atari 2600 Programming.

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showforum=50

Look around, do some research, try out bB if you want to leap in and get your feet wet, and just go nuts.

There's a forum for programming my VCR? Awesome! I need that. :D

    12:00 *blink* 12:00 *blink* 12:00 *blink* .....

  20. That is REALLY strange that you paid $25 CIB. Any Dragonstomper that comes up for auction comes directly to my e-mail. And I always bid on it, until recently when I got it for $50. So, I can't see how you managed to get it without my knoweledge.

I double-checked my e-bay receipts. I had my date wrong for this. I bought the sealed Dragonstomper on Sept 19, 2006 from islandnerd for $24.95. So we are talking 2 years ago, not 8 months. That more recent purchase was for a different supercharger game to replace a damaged sealed copy I had.
