And they take 10 steps forward protecting a Copyright, by legal standards, on all modern/current platforms which actually makes the company money, affecting the company financially. So that would pretty much nagate that. Again, allowing this 'step' by letting a product on a 20+ year old console results in maintaining good PR and good faith in the gaming community. It helps to ensure sales and support to the company now and in the future, as gamers like the ones who already spoke up on this thread have proven. By not allowing it would only damage the company's reputation and sales of current product(s). -Trebor

No one is saying for Namco (Or any company) to "abandon" their rights. Big_Mo, it probably would be best for this to continue via PM with PacManPlus, as already stated earlier in the thread. -Trebor

Oh, I don't want to sound like I am at all upset with Namco. Quite the oposite. I am thrilled that a company I am such a big fan of HAS been great about this. It was on Joystig, Bob wrote them himself, I've seen reviews of it all over, and still Namco have not attacked Bob or Atariage in any way. That's what I want to see. I want to see them ignore things that do them no harm and do fans a lot of good. I like seeing things like Atari giving away prizes at classic game shows. I like to see programmers of old games doing interviews on classic gaming sites. I like seeing companies release prototypes. Those things make me like the companies more. All I am doing is saying what I feel if a company does the opposite for no good reason. I understand why Namco would want to keep their games from being released illegally on the Xbox, or Wii, or whatever and being sold by someone else online to thousands or hundreds of thousands of people. If they wanted to sue someone for that, it would not impact my feelings of them one way or the other. I mean, they are making money on the Xbox live downloads, they can make money on a Virtual Console version, they still have product on the shelves with PacMan for GBA. Someone else serving those systems in the same way is money out of their pockets potentially. However, it isn't like I waited 15 years with no PacMan game and then, just as I was about to break down and buy a Namco Museum, Bob rushed in there and stole the sale right out from under them by releasing for the red hot Atari 7800. I would guess there are fewer gamers who have heard of the 7800 than there are gamers who have bought a Namco museum last generation. Yep...what he said. My sentiments exactly. It would have been nice for Big_Mo to have PM'ed you with his thoughts and could have saved a lot posts to this thread though. Anyhow, enough on this topic. Let's change subject...high scores post, anyone?

There are no 7800 emulators for mobile devices? You can make the emulator argument for any modern platform. Yes, just like there is not only Atari 7800 emulator for mobile devices (Like PSP), MAME and many other emulators for modern systems have many emulators. Regardless, I purchased Namco Musuem for my Gameboy Advance as well as Namco Compilations (and now come to think about it) Digital Leisures Williams Arcade Ports for the PC. I bought Midway Treasures as well. This is despite MAME and other Arcade emulators and numerous console emulators which have ports of the same titles that were and are emulated perfectly. Again, support for any company will wane if it should take up such an offense against a product or/and person on such an obsolete platform. -Trebor

I can tell you right now, if they were to not just "let it be" they would not sell me the next PacMan World, not sell me the next World Rally, not sell me the upcoming Wii compilation, not sell me PacMan a further dozen times, not sell me Dig Dug another dozen times, etc. I know I'm not personally capable of hurting Namco's pockets substantially, but they have lost exactly zero dollars from me as of now, as they are still my favorite gaming company, and I still buy their games, however, they would lose at least some small amount of money from me boycotting them if they went after this and they would lose money or manpower, at least some, on the actual legal pursuit of this. Were this being sold for the original Xbox right now (which has a huge installed base) on an Xbox fansite, I could see the problem. As you said, on a system that is only still used by a very, very, very small set of classic gamers who likely buy a million Namco products anyway, who's it hurting? Exactly, one of the points I am trying to make. I would really have to examine my collections, but besides the Soul Calibur titles, off the top of my head I have also purchased Microsoft Return to Arcade featuring all Namco titles for the PC (Despite MAME), Namco Museum for the Gameboy Advance as well as Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness...I am positive there are many, many other Namco titles I have bought. Again, one of my strong reasons to support newer compilations and titles from companies that have been around for decades is their tolerance and attitude toward emulation, attitude toward the classic gaming community and cooperation thereof. For a company like Namco to come down and attack a title or/and person(s) on an obsolete (By the majorities eyes) system would only be bad press and leave a very bitter taste in the mouth of gamers towards that company. Regardless, if those gamers support or even care about the Atari 7800 system at all. The circumstances involved as to what and whom Namco was going after would cause an ugly backlash towards them. -Trebor

Big_Mo, I'm not trying to be rude or obnoxious, but your first post to the thread states how the product is in violation of copyright and that it would be inevitable for Namco to go after something like this. Then your second post clearly states how it would be of no benefit for the company to even pursue anything concerning the product on this platform as there is neither benefit to Namco nor any money to be made here. Obviously, all parties involved here - especially PacManPlus - have not a thing to gain financially, but much time, labor and effort has been put forth to get this product to a very small base of people. It is truly a labor of love and not greed nor any malicious intent. It is understood that the entities involved in the product itself (Name(s), title(s), character(s)) are copyrighted by Namco, but you might as well go after people making photocopies of pages of books in libraries and individuals not crossing the street at the crosswalk. People ripping and copying X-Box (360), Playstation (2/3), GameBoy Advance/DS Namco titles are the issue/problem that should be of real concern and need to be attacked. Not a product for a 20+ year old game system, which has not had a title manufactured and distributed by any big game companies in 15+ years. I am not stating Namco does not have the right(s) to do so or that the product is not copyrighted by Namco, but as you mentioned what would be the benefit? While there is no benefit for Namco to 'go after’ or pursue contracts/titles for this platform, where the benefit for Namco does lie in 'allowing' this particular product is that it does strengthen the classic gaming communities support and good-will towards the company in support for them and/or current money-maker releases (For instance, I purchased Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast, and Soul Calibur 2 for the PS2). While the actual support base for this particular product and platform is very small, the connections and ties the individuals who do support this product are quite extensive. Word of mouth and reputations spreads fast with the internet. Namco would not want to place a wedge or create a stigma between themselves and gamers. I understand this project perhaps hit too close to home for you, being that you were a part of the project creation and release of Super Pac-Man for mobile devices and other projects for Namco, and I do not doubt your sincerity behind your post in protecting your work and Namco’s rights. However, we're talking about Pac-Man Collection for the Atari 7800, not Pac-Man Collection for mobile devices. If such a collection was released for current system/device, or even anything made in the last 10 years I can see the concern for both you and Namco, but with *this* product for *this* platform is it not best to just let it be? -Trebor

Hey Chris, Going thru the multicolor warp in Solaris is currently screwed-up in Stella, as shown here: Although it would be great to see these bugs in Stella fixed in MESS, and I'm not trying to but a damper on things, but the sound changes introduced in MAME as of 0.112u3 have really caused problems respecting sound in both MAME and MESS. I have (and continue to use) MESS for my Atari 7800 and ColecoVision emulation; however, ever since those changes were introduced, the stuttering/skipping of sound is anywhere from occasional to frequent. Hopefully soon, changes or additional options will be provided to fix or work around the issue. Until then, users may find themselves fustrated with the sound output of MESS. You can read more of the topic here - quoted by MAME's current coordinator Aaron: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showt...part=1&vc=1 Although the problem is usually worse for Arcade games running at refresh rates outside 60Hz with triplebuffering or vsync enabled, games and consoles running at 60Hz without the options enabled are affected as well. -Trebor

Hey Mitch, Email sent. Stupidly, I did not write anything in the subject line of the email. You should have received an email from hotmail account indicating I want one of the limited edition carts with manual. Everyone should *REALLY* purchase this cartridge for a number of reasons: 1. It adds to your library collection. 2. A good game to play and master. 3. Mitch's generosity on several levels: a. Spent thousands of dollars to acquire this title, yet is sharing it with the community at a VERY inexpensive price. b. Freely provided both the raw image dump as well as the header file/format for emulators (*.a78) c. One of the most devoted, committed and greatest supporter of the 7800 in all aspects from the literal hardware to emulation. So, please again, *EVERYONE* purchase this title from Mitch. You will *not* regret it! -Trebor

The problem(s) numerous people are experiencing is a result of the sound core as well as vsync and buffering changes introduced in MAME 0.112u3. It moved many of the functions once handled at the OS layer (IE Windows) to the actual MAME core. For many who are running MAME on display devices refreshing @60Hz will especially notice the "new effect". Keep in mind that 60Hz = 60 fps. However, older Namco titles (IE Pac-Man) round off closer to the scanning frequencies of 61Hz (61 fps). If you're forcing a refresh rate lower than 61 therefore, you're screen updates are falling behind and the sound will become out of sync (Hence the recommendation to enable autoframeskip). On the other hand, it appears there are some that are having problems regardless of that issue and recommended "fix". Hopefully future revision of MAME will have the sound and video handling updated or rewritten that will fix (or at least work around) the problem. In the meantime: http://download.consolemul.com/Emulateurs/...x_0112_i686.exe *Note: If you MESS, it incorporates the same changes as MAME. Additionally, MESS 0.112 broke the Atari 7800 driver. So the best MESS version to user prior to the rewrite is 0.111.

I see your point throughout this thread, but now you're going over the edge a little. You called him out for not saying that it was based on RockNES, and now you're pissed because he edited his post to say just that? I'd almost say you're trolling at this point... His initial posts may have seemed disingenuous, but he's certainly more than clear now about what he's doing and his intentions. Understood. However, by editing and adding the aforementioned line to the his initial post, it gives the impression that he made it clear that it is "based" off of RockNES X from the getgo, and there would have been no point of me stating what I did. That indeed is not the case. His original statement was it is his emulator and his work. It is far from that. I'm not trying to troll anyone or anything - I was just looking out for the hard work of dedicated emulator programmer(s). -Trebor
