They've got a tough and often thankless job to do. I'm sure they do a lot more "cleaning up" on the forums (editing or deleting troll posts and so forth) than most of us are aware of.

Yes ,they seem very happy dont they.

  3. After leaving a comment here about advertizing, and video games, I wondered just to what extent of an asshole I was being. So I decided to come here to the Atari Age forums to ask for yall's opinion(s) on the matter. But I was thinking (while laughing to myself) just how AWFUl it would be to have intrusive advertizing in a game like Demon's Souls or Etrian Odyssey, or some other game where the heavy mood kind of carries the experience. I mean, say you're down in the labyrinths of Etrian Odyssey 4 (if they make a fourth) and you see a McDonalds! Lol, come on you know that'd be great. You could go get an Egg McMuffin (the game always feels like morning to me) and it'd raise your hitpoints 40 each time!
  4. did you get my message? I just sent one

  5. Apparently you have to choose "mark as read" after having clicked on a message. But I like it more where if the number in the top right of the screen is in bold and says "1," "2," etc., that it implies you have unread messages, because when I click on it and see that I've already read a message, and it wasn't telling the truth when it actually told me I had unread messages, then I get very slightly annoyed or something... http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/542/oldschooldickhead.png/ ...none of which I expressed to this guy above who just banned me from responding to him in PM about it. I guess he's still annoyed that I thought he looked like Dave Halverson in his profile pic. If I'm wrong, as I likely am, and no one else SUFFERS from this problem, of seeing sometimes on forums that it says "unread messages," not just at AtariAge's forums... and then you click on it and realize they are in fact messages you've already clicked on and read... then well so be it. Sorry!
  6. Thanks for that Michael McDonald video. Never seen it before.

  7. Thanks!!!! I wonder why I couldn't just find that information somewhere on the web when I looked.
  8. I got a GBA SP AGS-101 which seemed great until i realized there is no way to turn off the color on original gameboy games. Am I right about that or do I have to hold down some button/
  9. This is not an RPG, but I thought it might appeal to space combat fans:
  10. I am playing version 2.1 of 22-Jan-82. Does anyone know if an earlier version didn't have the character backup option?
  11. I've played the DS version tonight. I ordered it about a week ago but just got to playing it. It's very good. I'm at level 6-3 so far. Pretty nice challenge if you're trying to get all the feathers (they're like the big stars in Mario). Controls very well, though it's tricky to get rid of unwanted vines. I recommend picking it up to anyone who enjoys simple, addictive action-puzzlers.

  14. Yes, save scumming is cheating. But everyone did it, so it's ok. Actually I just noticed there is a backup option in the utilities section of the boot disk. So I guess it's not save scumming after all.
  15. You know I didn't even know what you were talking about until I checked it out and lo and behold, I put that in as a joke years and years ago and totally forgot about it. Well, it's staying because it's hilarious And no, it isn't. aw, man!
  16. lol, I just clicked on your website url (from your profile) -- that's not you, right??
  17. Aren't you using an emulator (applewin)? Then can't you just take the disc images and make a copy of them (ctrl-c/ctrl-v) and there you go? Instant backup? uh yeah but as I said I want to be sure that I'm not cheating - i.e., doing something that couldn't easily be done back in the early 80s on an apple 2. It was pretty common, back in the day, to back up character disks. There wasn't any copy protection on those, so you could easily use Copy II Plus (or any other copying program) to do it. If you'd invested enough time into the game then this was something that you'd definitely do. Trust me, you wouldn't be cheating! Thanks!!!! Still though... it makes me wonder why the game seems designed around the principle of not being able to easily recover your characters. For instance, there are whole features in the game related to this, like to restore your character in case of a power outage, to disband and retrieve characters later (out party), inability to revive characters in the Temple of Cant, etc. etc. PLUS there was a promise to try to retrieve characters from corrupted disks if you sent them in to Sir-Tech and included 15 dollars (i downloaded the apple 2 manual .pdf and saw this mentioned at the end). So if they went to all that trouble it makes me think the designers didn't expect players to easily be able to back up their characters and essentially "save" the game when they wanted (or at least whenever you were back in the castle).

  19. My party died today and I am busy rebuilding a new one to either fetch them from the dungeons or just stick with the new one and leave them there (or bring them back in case this happens again)... I like to play without cheats and walkthroughs, although i have cheated a little (I know where Murphy's Ghost is and a couple of other things), but mostly I've been drawing my own maps and slowly, carefully making my way through it. hard game! However a question: does anyone know if it was possible (or easy) to simply copy your character backups of Wizardry on Apple II to another disk in case you lose your party deep in the dungeons? I just don't want to go through with this again, and while I know that there are tricks (like resetting your machine before Wizardry automatically saves after a fight), I want to play it in the legit way, but it just occurred to me that this MAY BE the legit way that I was supposed to be doing all along! Like, duh! Of course I'm supposed to be making backups of my characters... in other words, using save states.
  20. It really depends on the game, because I loved both. Street Fighter II translated very well to SNES, but Mortal Kombat was another story: I definitely preferred the arcade versions. Same with Art of Fighting and Samurai Shodown. Also Daytona and to a lesser extent Virtua Fighter 2 cause I didn't have a Saturn. I normally liked homegaming the most because you could spend more time mastering the game, getting to know it in and out, and you didn't fear dying. When I'd go to the arcades, I'd pretty much expect to die right off the bat, because spending enough time to get to know the game would mean I'd waste all my quarters/tokens when I could've been playing other games. The NES and Genesis were my favorite systems. I enjoyed the heck out of Contra on the NES as a kid and when I saw the arcade version one day at the mall I was flabbergasted by how bad it looked. I prefer the NES version to this day. Which game for the arcade market, made exclusively for the arcade market (i.e not ported or converted for home gaming) do you think would have adapted well or been better on the home gaming systems Little Nemo for the arcade would have made a great Genesis/SNES title, though they never could have had that many sprites on screen, I think.
  21. I played through the main game and thought it was great. I especially liked the ending and some of the short stories were better than others (favorites: marionette and rock town). I was annoyed originally with the slow framerate and fuzzy graphics, however I got used to it, and a lot of it looks rather good, especially the way the towns are designed and the enemies and their animations. I like the music too. I've been playing Dragon Quest lately, having never really played the series until last year. I beat DQ5 and 4 for the DS (the remakes) and recently I played through Dragon Warrior in emulator and was greatly impressed. Right now I'm playing Wizardry on Apple II to get closer to where it all began. A number of people on the Gamefaqs board have expressed their opinions and talked at length about where they are in the game, how many hours they've put in, and basically everything else. There's a ton of threads there (over a 1000). Some people have played the game upwards of 300 hours now due to all the post-game content, but I decided to put off that aspect of the game (what many people call the best part) until later when I feel less inclined to explore older stuff.
  22. Ah ha! I figured it out!! I simply had to ONLY mark the boot disk as read-only, not the scenario disk. This was quite stupid of me. I had both of them marked as read only. Thanks everyone for your help
  23. Go here: http://bardstale.brotherhood.de/talefiles/1/files/index.html DL the Apple II version. It has a character disk in the archive. I am guessing that would be it.. desiv Why do I want to use a Bard's Tale character disk? I'm trying to play Wizardry.
  24. Ticking and unticking the read-only box doesn't seem to work. I think Applewin keeps in memory the version you loaded and doesn't check to see if the .dsk file on your hard drive has changed. I am having trouble creating a blank disk (I think). I looked at the help files that come with Applewin and it says to load DOS 3.3 master disk image into drive 1, then click on drive 1 to make a blank disk (make up any name you want and press enter), then type a simple program, such as 10 PRINT CHR$(4);"CATALOG" Then type INIT HELLO to initialize or format the disk. So I did all that and thought I had a blank disk for making the scenario disk in Wizardry. Well, to get to that screen you load up Wizardry and before you press "S" for start game, you go into Utilities and select Make Scenario Disk. It says, place original master scenario side in drive 2, and a formatted diskette in drive 1. I assume by "original master scenario" they mean disk 2 of Wizardry because when I tried disk 1 it did not work (my disk files are not labeled "original master scenario" and I am unfamiliar with the way the original disks looked). So I try that and I get ERROR MAKING SCENARIO ----------------------------------- DISK ERROR PRESS [RET] Any idea what I do instead? I looked at the Bard's Tale page but I didn't understand it because it said something about making a copy of the back side of Bard's Tale's boot disk. No idea how to do that..
  25. Oh, they ARE marked as read-only. However I followed this person's advice in marking them read only because it wouldn't start up the game properly without doing so (it would go to a blank screen after you pressed return at the title screen). Anyway, I am playing the NES version now, which as far as I can tell is very faithful to the original in regards to stats and gameplay.
