Correct!

I know this probably isn't what you're suggesting, but just so we're clear: this isn't the homebrew game I'm talking about, we've got the real thing circa 1991.

I'm choosing to reveal it as a live video stream tomorrow on 1UP, because it pleases me to do so: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178885

The Barry Hausman Collection (Colecovision protos?)
TheRedEye replied to Shantai's topic in Prototypes
Hooray! That's very cool of you, I'm a junkie for stuff like this. -
Has anyone put together some kind of frontend that will utilize different builds of MAME and launch whichever one works best for each individual game? Seems like a cool project (though a huge pain in the ass I'm sure).

It's weird how much I instantly trust a guy's legal advice because his avatar is a picture of Matlock.

Atari's Landfill Adventures, I now have the proof it's true.
TheRedEye replied to Spud's topic in Atari 2600
I haven't looked at this thread in four years, but just in case no one has found these yet: InfoWorld, December 5, 1983 "Atari is still trying to dig its way out from under the inventory avalanche. Late in September of this year, people around Alamogordo, N.M., were amazed when 20 trucks filled with Atari games, VCSs and home computers ended up in the local dump, where they were crushed by a bulldozer. Atari says they were defectives, but kids who scavenged the dump said the games were playable." Fortune, January 9, 1984 "Fierce competition in the home computer market and misjudgment of demand for video games led to a $536-million loss in the first nine months of 1983 for Warner Communications' Atari division. In September an Atari plant dumped 14 truckloads of video cartridges and computer equipment at the city landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Scoffs an analyst, "That's not real good inventory management." The company says the products were defective. Warner was judged to have the poorest quality of management of all 250 companies." -
Flashcart and Multicart List - All systems
TheRedEye replied to PsychedelicShaman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I would love to have a native Game Boy/Game Boy Color cart that is the size of a GBA game, so I can put it in a GBA SP and have it not stick out. I don't suppose any of you have come across such a thing? And yes I know there is an emulator, but that's not good enough. If I'm using something that natively plays Game Boy games, I'd prefer to do it for real. I guess I could get the Game Boy cart linked above, but I'm hoping someone has made a shorter one. -
There can be only ONE...
TheRedEye replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The most recent Windows-based PC I can get away with. With emulators that should pretty much get me all the way through the PS1 and N64 era (minus the Saturn maybe). Depending on the machine I might even get native DOS support, which would be a plus. -
I was around when laserdisc games were in arcades, and I was old enough to be wowed by FMV on home consoles when it first started happening, but I still think all FMV games suck and this thread has not swayed my opinion yet.

For Trade/Sale I've got quite a few "doubles" that are available, if you are also into this sort of thing. I'm mainly looking to trade for other mags, and am not terribly interested in selling these just yet, at least until I see if there is any trade interest. That said, if you absolutely have to have something, let me know and we can work something out. Video game magazines are heavy, ugly, and take up a lot of space. They also affect your sex life and could possibly cause cancer. For these reasons and many more, you should give, trade and/or sell your old video game magazines to me! Also, in all seriousness, I use these as a "reference library" of sorts for the strange and wonderful research I do, so you will be putting your old garbage to good use and bettering mankind. What I'm Looking For My main focus right now is getting as much material from the 8 and 16-bit console eras as I can, so let's say...1987-1997, give or take. I'm also interested in material printed both before and after these years, and would certainly take them if you have them, but more than likely I will not buy them unless it's a deal I'd be stupid to pass up, especially if it's in one huge bulk. You may notice a lack of computer game magazines in my Want List below. This does not necessarily mean I'm only interested in console mags, it just means that I'm primarily focused on them for the time being. I may be interested in your computer mags too. Countries of Origin I am currently focusing on material printed in the United States, mainly because I can only read English and most of the good UK-published stuff is already scanned online. That said, one of my secret hopes is that there is a crazy person in the U.S. who has imported every issue of Edge and wants to get rid of them. If you are that crazy person, please let me know! I'd also be interested in non-English console mags, particularly from the 8-bit era. Flyers, One-Sheets, Press Releases, Books, Mailers, Catalogs, Etc. In addition to magazines, I'm looking for any other printed material related to video games. Did you fill out those information cards in the backs of magazines and ask for more material from its advertisers? Did you attend old CES or E3 shows and fill your bags with paper? Did you run an arcade, or work for a game studio that got business publications sent to it? Did you work for a newspaper or magazine and keep things that were sent to you? How about old mailorder catalogs? FuncoLand price sheets? Weird little 'zines? Let me know, I'm probably interested! Shipping Magazines Is Expensive And Also Dumb Yes, I'm aware. How To Contact Me Either reply here, send me a private message, or just email me directly at [email protected] Want List Below is an incomplete list of magazines I am currently looking for. If it's not on here, that doesn't mean I don't want it! Even if I already have an issue, I may be interested in getting another copy either as an upgrade (many of mine are rough/missing pages/etc.) or as trade material. Hey Ian, are you sure those Longest Journey discs are beta? They look identical to the retail version.

Anyone ever call the old phone numbers?
TheRedEye replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
About four years ago I called the "Terminator 2 fan club" phone number that is shown on Terminator 2: The Arcade Game, insisting that the lady on the other end get me a membership. She didn't know what I was talking about, and didn't have a new number for me to call. -
Intellivision Game Shrinkwrapped (New or Original)?

I can say for sure I bought an authentic shrinkwrapped Astrosmash at an old CGE (1999 maybe?), so it definitely happened. -
Video Game Sales Took Another Hit in July
TheRedEye replied to Random Terrain's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yeah, July was the fifth month in a row that was down year-over-year - part of it is the economic recession, sure, but a much more important factor is all of the huge games that came out during the first half of last year versus the small handful of bigger titles we've seen so far in 2009. From what I can see it's not the end of the world, it's more like publishers are getting smarter and spreading things out. -
A question about prototypes (more to do with computer games)
TheRedEye replied to carmel_andrews's topic in Prototypes
Have fun: http://gtwportal.retro-net.de/ -
Great, I'll put you on the pre-preorder list.

Well, sorry you took it so personally, but that's how I feel and I don't plan on taking back what I said. I think it's wrong for anyone to sell reproductions of someone else's work without permission, and I think it crosses a line and escalates to "dirty and strange" if it's on a larger, mass-produced scale like one of your releases. I just can't wrap my head around it being OK to bootleg someone else's work and sell it, but I'm not exactly going around and telling people to boycott this stuff either. Ultimately what you and the rest are doing benefits game preservation and gives weirdos like myself more old games to play, and I'd rather things happen "your" way than not at all, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it.
-
I'm not going to bother responding to your personal attacks against my website or your accusations of me "pestering" people because it has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation, but I will respond to the above: No, that's not what I said at all. You asked me to explain the difference between a ROM burning service and the mass production of a bootleg video game, and I've done so. I don't feel the need to explain my answer further. I think producing bootleg copies of a game crosses a line that one-off burning services do not, and I think I've done a reasonable job of explaining why I feel that way. I don't know how this became some kind of attack on you, especially after I explicitly said that it was not, but I wish you'd stop interpreting it that way.
-
Hi Jason. I appreciate the detailed reply, but I think you missed the part where I said that my question went beyond payment and was purely moral. My arguments here have little, possibly nothing, to do with money.
-
Yes, I do. I see a huge difference between paying some dude $20 to burn EPROMs with the data I provide him versus paying "Nowhere Productions" or "Retro Zone" or "OlderGames.com" or whatever for a fully packaged product featuring a game that they're holding some exclusive stranglehold on. I am not personally bashing you or bunnyboy or anyone else when I say this, as you're all stand-up gentlemen who have done good things, I'm merely answering your question. To me it is the difference between burning a copy of a movie for a friend versus standing out on the street corner with a table full of packaged bootlegs. Both are illegal and in some ways immoral, but I think you cross a strange line when you manufacture and sell copies of something that isn't yours, especially if you attach your name to it. Does it matter who I'm referring to? As far as I'm concerned, if I didn't make something, I can't package it and sell it as if I did. You really sound sure of yourself! Not that it matters, but to set the record straight, you're wrong. Elite currently employs about three people. One of them, chairman Steve Wilcox, has been around since its 1984 inception. I'm really tired of this argument, and I don't know why I keep involving myself. I just got a little angry reading this thread and seeing that Andrew didn't get a copy of his game three years after it was dumped. Sorry for any headaches I may have given you and for all the time you've had to put into your lengthy replies defending yourself against my own personal morals. You think it's cool to sell someone else's work (profit or no profit, doesn't matter to me), I think it's weird and wrong. At least we've got more old junk to play with, which is the whole reason any of us are posting on these forums.
-
Is there seriously no part of you that sees how packaging and selling someone else's work without permission is wrong? This goes beyond money or the original developers getting paid or whatever, I'm asking you a purely moral question.
