  1. Nintendo SHOULD have put four buttons on the GBA's face like they said they would, so the GBA connectivity could serve more as a controller than a HUD.

Or better yet, one of those little cool mini analog sticks like the Pocket Neo Geo thing has....that would be cool for whatever comes next from Nintendo.

  2. Star Wars- I'm not looking forward to this.  Sure Rogue Leader was an awesome game, but I'm starting to get sick of Star Wars games.  How many times can you listen to the same 3 songs remixed a hundered different ways before it just makes you go insane?  I might change my mind and atleast play it if EGM says it's awesometastic, but until then, I'm only glad that it's helping Nintendo's position in "The War."

Well, it's pretty clear this is the one I'm all psyched about. It's not about the music (though i love the Emporer's March); it's all about putting yourself in the cockpit of the fighters of the movies you loved as a kid (which is why the Phantom Menace based one, while seemingly competent, and with a cool "director's commentary" soundtrack feature, never caught my attention enough to struggle through.)

On the other hand, they say the 3rd person running around stuff is a bit spotty, and the footage bears that out, a little bit too much random dashing and shooting. But they promise a whole slew of "Wedge" based missions which will be star fighter based, as opposed to the "Luke" path that goes for those movie scenes.

  3. Fusion = 4.  Watch the intro when you boot up the game carefully.  Nintendo presents, Metroid 4.

    Huh, so it must be NES=1, GB=2, SNES=3, GBA=4?

Wonder if GC=5. Or if the fact it's "Prime" means it's "0" or some such crap? (Oh, wait, Prime's story happens just after the NES version? Never mind.)

I do love the series (just got my picture taken with a lifesize Samus at a Frankfurt airport store, i should post that) even though Prime struck me as a bit linear. Still, it's getting more and more awkward to explain how she loses her powerups at the start of every dang game...

  4. All 3 consoles have good quality contollers but I found the Gamecube one a bit hap hazard with reference to button positioning. Very comfortable to hold though.

The PS2 controller does seem to have the analogue joysticks in a slightly uncomfortable position, but the rest of the controller is very good.

The best controller is the newer small Xbox one, the older big one is for people with giant hands only and would rank below the others for reasons of discomfort.

GC: fair enough, though I find that "haphazardness" useful for my fingers to remember one button from the other. It's a bit assymetrical, though; games that treat the little yellow stick as the equal partner of the main stick feel a little off.

PS2: Yeah, not terrifically well positioned sticks. Also I'm confused; what's the difference between the PS1 and PS2 versions of the dualshock?

And does the PS2 supposedly have "analog" buttons? Because they aren't very good if so; the shoulder buttons on the GC have much better feedback and range of motion...

  5. Rogue Squadron is my favorite for the N64.  With codes you can fly several other ships.  What I most liked about the game is that you could fly around and do whatever the hell you wanted to do. Once you mastered the controls, it was fantastic.  I bought the Xbox version used and returned it the next day. It sucked.  I have wondered if the GC version allows a lot of freedom like the N64.

    (Reporting in from England!)

I'm not sure if I get what you mean, about "whatever the hell you want to do"...N64 Rogue Squadron was entirely mission-centric, though you had some flexibility in what you did. I only played a little bit of the PS2 version, so I don't know if it was less flexible.

On the other hand, only GameCube has the sequal that's a direct successor to the N64 version, the Rogue Leader series. It's generally better regarded than its StarFighter cousin, so chances are it's what you're looking for. It's a wonderful game, especially the Battle of Endor with its swarms of tiefighters. I'm way jonesing for Rogue Strike...

  6. Console wars are so boring.....

Having owned all 3 here are my comments..

Gamecube: Goodlooking and easy to live with, nice selection of games which are more adult than they first appear, i.e. they look cute but are deeper than you think. Probably has thge worst controller of the 3. No regrets about selling either. Definately slightly better than PS2 IMO. My favourite game: Monkey Ball

Hi from Germany! I'll not waste my precious internet cafe minutes arguing who got nasty first here.

Anyway, I'm surprised you're so down on the gamecube controller.

PS2 hurts, havent used xbox much, but GC is comfortable, with well

placed and well differentiated buttons (one problem i have with PS2

is my fingers get the shoulder buttons all confused...)

Do you like the xbox new or old controller?

And glad to see you agree; all consoles have good and bad points.

  7. Yeah thanks, though I actually saw that page....but I didn't see much about the release schedule, that it's Japan-only (for now), etc...

I hope it makes it here...if it's a half decent game it should sell well, huge nostalgia factor. (I remember how hot and bothered some people got when "Game Informer" did a realistic looking mockup for a hypothetical transformers game that they didn't know was fake.)

If they did port it, wonder if they'd get the original voice talent? Or at least a decent impersonatator.

Also, wonder how they deal with the pre- and post-movie bots together...

  8. Ya know Kisrael, sorry your thread got Hijacked. It was an interesting thread. I was actually trying to point out what seemed cool at E3 from all 3 and then it kinda lead into the whole" nintendo is just the best by default" thing and got carried away from there. And then after your comment about the "And X-box, crappy black case and initially HUUUGE Dreamcast ripoff controllers..." and the "Mario Kart Sequel > Some crappy if pretty ninja running around game"

kinda reminded me that nobody can really say anything nice about the Xbox on here without comments like yours.

Man, no offense but that sounds pretty thin-skinned. Which is too bad, becaue the Xbox does have a lot going for it.

No one said "Nintendo is just the best by default", someone said "Nintendo always blows everybody away at E3." (which, oddly enough, doesn't seem to be true this year in particular.) Not really worse than "Microsoft and their X-Box is owning the E3", but no one ripped into that with "HAHA HAHA" etc.

I think the case and the initial controllers are legitimate things to pick on on the X-box. I was responding to a very provocative "The reason you are getting so upset must be that deep down you know that Nintendo has really missed the boat somewhere along the way...

but you just don't want to admit it." And then I go on to point out some of the good things X-box is doing! Did you miss that?

And the whole Mario Kart > Ninja Gaiden thing was me correcting a possibly delibertate mis-spinning of what I said; I don't think Mario Kart DD holds up to Halo 2, but I think Rebel Strike does.

at comments like yours and Saurons who say shit like that but think everyone should respect what the other likes :?  Kinda funny how that works huh? And I get pissed off whenever anyone is ignorant about any shit like that.... So you can continue with your thread now........

I think you have really thin skin...even nonfans give the Xbox props for what it's doing on this thread. The attacks on Nintendo seem to be more emotional and "wah wah, you guys just like it because you've always liked it."

  9. Who's the grey spy?? The woman??

Yeah. In the comic, she always beat out the other two... I don't think they ever managed to trick her.

The white spy is still my favorite.

Any idea about that robot looking spy? Comic character, or new for the game?

  10. Well it's like songs you really' date=' really like. They always seem to be too short. Like Blur's Song 2. I LOVE that song but it's too short.

I wasn't saying it's a bad thing, just saying the Easy mode had very short game play time. I haven't played on the harder modes yet, but when I finish all the other games I probably will. I do like the idea that the game is somewhat different with the different difficulties, unlike other games where they just make the enemies harder to kill or send out more of them.

Although in Serious Sam more enemies to kill meant more fun...

    [img']http://scorpius.150m.com/master/smilie/ar15.gif[/img]

And I just noticed I am spelling your name wrong, sorry about that

No worries about the name. Mispelling it, and various geo-political overtones, are making me use "kirkjerk" for more purposes these days.

And I'm probably shoving some karma from a different argument I was in here, where people were making compaints about games being too easy, and I think accessability to non-hardcore gamers is good Though the conclusion everyone could agree on are multiple difficulties are a good thing...

  11. I agree with kisreal. Time Splitters 2 is a pretty good game, but if you play on the Easy level expect to get through it in about 2 hours.

Why do you make 2 hours sound like a bad thing?

Like I said, there are 3 settings of difficulty, and each harder setting adds a lot, sometimes the level is like twice as long.

I think having easier levels that let a newbie get the feel for the breadth of the game, but optional difficulty settings that add the depth for the person who likes a challenge, and gives that person new things to see, is about ideal...

  12. Back to the N64. One game that gets fairly well rated is Blast Corps. For some reason, I just can't get into it, and I love destruction in my video games.

Dunno quite what the appeal is...I don't think it's just the destruction...and I'm not usually the biggest fan of "figure it out" games. But this one just clicked for me, it was fun maninpulating the environment with the different vehicles i guess.

  13. There's a chance this could just end up being a gimmicky FPS (Well, Third) with funny weapons.

Maybe so but those screen shots sure do look sweet.

You think? I thought they were pretty simple backgrounds. Which might be appropriate, given the source material. Similarly, low polygon count models work pretty well for the main guys. Still, nothing to drool over.

Is that "robot spy" character in the magazine, or likely new to the game?

  14. You like 4-player games the best, Kisrael? Do you play Chu Chu Rocket much? While I also like Worms or Bomberman, I love Chu Chu in multi-player mode and don't ever see many people list it when they talk multi-player games.

Yeah, as I'm sure too many people on the board can attest, 4 player onscreen multiplayer is my favorite genre, and why I'm such a Nintendo fanboy.

Chu Chu Rocket is pretty good, but almost...I dunno, overstimulating? It's hard to get a grip on it when the torrents of mice come, and sometimes it seems to have a bit too much of an element of chance.

or sometimes, one person is so much better at it, the other people get ticked and want to play something else.

  15. Since the original URLs point to www.cube-europe.com, I'm guessing there'll be a Gamecube version.

Glad to see this one again, I used to like the old C64 game. Nice to see that they included the grey spy as well... Hope they manage to keep the humor, and include lots of booby traps.

I wonder if they could cram in the original Spy vs Spy games in there?

Maybe even with the new graphics...should be pretty easy, actually.

There's a chance this could just end up being a gimmicky FPS (Well, Third) with funny weapons.

  16. There may be less titles than the PSX but that means there is less crap, and you know those first party and second party tittles are grade A

I think that's Nintendo's last ace in the hole; no other console has a reliable first party game maker. I think the GC has some other advantages, good form factor, great controllers--but if it weren't for that, all the system would have going for it is Monkey Ball and Rogue Leader.

For its main consoles, has Nintendo ever done a really bad game? I mean, I know many were disappointed were Luigi's Mansion, it wasn't a Mario and it was short, but still I thought it was well-polished, balanced, and fun.

  17. Conkers will be a big hit because it's a classic that everybody likes.

I just found out that the N64 version of Conkers will be included in the Xbox version. It'll have upgraded graphics and extra cutscenes and levels that were not included on the N64. :)

Too bad the acting was so so-so in that, reminded me of my fellow actors in middle school, sometimes a little bit too "self aware"/fourth wall breaking, because it was pretty funny in other ways. Some good music, especially on the lava surf level.

Getting Rare was definately a big coup for Microsoft. Many of the "Best of N64" games I listed on the other thred were from them. Hopefully revamping Conker isn't a sign that their glory days are behind them...

  18. Sorry to change subjects, but Time SPlitters 2 -- I had forgotten about this game but a friend said it was 'awesome' about a year ago. Any advice about it? What kind of game is it? 1player fun?

Yes, it's an excellent game in both one player and multiplayer forms.

It has a set of very cool one player missions, all set in different historical periods. (And the one player missions can also be played 2 player co-op, though I think that is in some ways more difficult...) Each level has Easy/Medium/Hard mode as well, and each setting seems to have more to do, not just throwing tougher baddies at you. So if you like things easy, you can pretty much see every level, and for the people who are into challenges, I think the hard levels are really difficult...beyond my ability/time I'm willing to sink into it, anyway.

I had just as much fun one player with a series of challenges, different game types you can play to unlock extra characters, boards, and gamemodes in multiplayer. I'm not a big fan of having to play single player to unlock things in multi, but they do it pretty fairly. Those challenges are pick up and play fun, shorter than the story mode missions.

Deathmatch is excellent as well. If only the PS2 version had come through with the rumored online play! I woulda bought it even though I already had it on GC.

I think this was by the golden eye/perfect dark team, and it shows. Very high production values, some interesting character, variety of multiplayer, decent AI (I think), fun weapon sets.

Oh, and there's even a "make your own level/mission" mode, which was fun to tool around with, but paled pretty quickly.

    A great game overall.

  19. It's amazing how grating the loadtimes were.

I wanted to like this. I was hoping it was finally a decent deathmatch on GC. Luckily, Time Splitters 2 came out not too long after.

I tried to like it, but it just comes across as bad, frustrating but not in a good way. And the story I always tell is my cousin was dithering over what game I should get him for his bithday on the way to the store and laughed when I said "you decide in the next 5 minutes or YOU'RE GETTING TUROK!!!". Even to this day, Turok is our joke threat when we can't decide what game to play next...

  20. Yeah, that's obviously my first choice, but our PC desperately needed to be upgraded.  The major problem I'm having with the new PC is that is cost as much as my Mac

I think I've shied away form PC gmes ever since my university got that shiny new Internet in the dorms thing, and all the freshman with their brand spanking new PCs would whip my but on my rusty ol' 486/66 in Duke Nuke'em 3D...I'd almost hold my own til the water-based level, then suddenly it was a world of 2 FPS hurt.

    Consoles are just reliable.

I bought a new PC last year, middle of the road, and I was surprised at how choppy Quake III demo looked on it, since I'm sure in many ways the PC should be better than my DC...

  21. I'd agree with most though the racers I'd add Fzero.

Oops, oh yeah. Actually, I couldn't find a few of my favorite titles as I perused my collection, that was one of them.

And I'd have to give the sports titles to the PS. Mario tennis and golf were fun but there were alot of good sports titles for the PSX.

Could be. Not into sports that much, my cousin might have more to say...his N64 broke, sometimes he brings over this ancient version of Madden with this really goofy repetitive titlescreen music. Doot doo doot, doot de doot, doot doot dootdoot doot...

    I do like Blitz though.

RPG's are hands down PSX. Zelda OOT still is one of my all time favs but the sheer numbers of good RPG's on the PSX gives it the edge in my book.

True, N64 was noticeable for its lack of proper RPGs. (And of course couldn't do FMV in any respectable way, though otherwise I think the cart format was a plus, not a minus.)

To me, "action RPGs" like Zelda are a different breed than say, Final Fantasy whatever. Some other thread was asking about "Zelda like RPGs for GB", and said the discerning factor is boring turn based combat vs. Zelda's much more interactive, and I think that nails it. I want to like a game like FF7, but a few random monster encounter battles and I'm bored and frustrated to tears.

  22. Variety is good.  You won't find anything like RC Stunt Copter or Dance Dance Revolution on an N64.

N64 had its share of innovative and niche titles, like Blast Corps and Space Station Silicon Valley. It also had many innovations later copied: 4 controller ports (which Sony still doesn't get, unlike DC and XBox), the return of the analog stick, the rumble pack. It had all these months or years before anyone else.

As for games, the N64 had the "best in class" for many genres:

    FPS: Golden Eye, Perfect Dark

Racers: Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing

    Party: Mario Party Series

    Action 'Puzzle':Pokemon Puzzle League

    3D Platformer: Mario 64, Conker, DK64

    Realtime RPG: Zelda:OoT and MM

    Brawler:Smash Bros

Tank Game: BattleTanx and its sequel (still looking for something as good on a current platform!)

Star Wars:Rogue Squadron (and previously SotE)

    Multiplatform: Blitz 2000, Micromachines

    Shooter: Star Fox

Puzzle Solvers:Space Station Silicon Valley, Blast Corps

    Sports: Mario Tennis, Mario Golf

For 4 player gaming, it was undisputed champ.

I think a previous poster was right though; first party games by Nintendo can almost be bought on sight and you know you're getting a great game. Everything else was a mixed bag.

As a N64 fan who then got a PS1 late, thinking he'd pick up tons of great cheap games, well....all they had was the mixed bag. (there was some guaranteed quality, GTs and FFs, if you like those, which to be fair I didn't. And Arcade Paks. And I got the system partially to get "Unholy War", I'm a Star Control/Archon fanboy from way back)

  23. IT'S JUST A CONSOLE. And not a particularly thrilling one for many of us on here. There is nothing special that it does that isn't done better elsewhere. PERIOD.

above. That's getting pretty disturbing. Many things are done better on the Xbox. PERIOD. The Xbox usually does get criticised on here so what? I have yet to see one Xbox fan jump in some sort of Nintendo or PS2 thread and start getting all pissy about the systems or games.

Quit playing the martyr. On this thread, Xbox fans have been just as obnoxious or more so than anyone else.

The statement "there is nothing special that isn't done better elsewhere" was misguided. Most consoles have one specialty or other. All consoles have their exclusive titles.
