  1. I came into contact with Mark Marrese through a post on Craig's list and he told me about this user group. I just got into collecting Atari 2600 and NES games after finding a few cartridges at a local Goodwill. Now I am hooked and can't stop searching for games. As I am rather new to the hobby, I don't have much of a collection yet and would be interested in trading or buying seconds from people. I am a pretty avid online gamer and am part of a group called 2Old2Play (www.2old2play.com) which is an online community for gamers over 30. Cool site and no screaming, cussing Timmies. Anyway, as a relatively new resident of NE (I moved here 4 years ago after a bit of a migration from the DEEP South) I recently headed up to Gamespot in NH after learning about the place while watching "King of Kong". Cool place, I had to drag my better half out of there after 5 hours and about $40 in quarters.

    Hey man,

    nice meeting you today!

Is 2old2play mostly about PC gaming?

Sometimes I think I'd love that to be the theme of a local Arlington/Boston group for consoles... just a little reverse age discrimination :-)

  2. Yoshi's Cookie, huh?

I wonder if this WiiWare thing is making them hold off on Dr. Mario.

Dr. Mario will not likely to be released on the vc.

Dr. Mario is already released Japan as a wiiware game as Dr. Mario &Bacteria Extermination. The game futures online play.

    Sometimes I really hate Nintendo.

Not only do they miss the joy and delight of four player Dr Mario in person, their whole online thing is such a bland child-friendly mess of endless numbers to type in.

ONLINE SHMONLINE I MIGHT AS WELL BE PLAYING A G'DAMN COMPUTER! DUH!

    retards.

  3. Yoshi's Cookie, huh?

I wonder if this WiiWare thing is making them hold off on Dr. Mario.

I'm tired of keeping around a GC just for four player Dr. Mario on that import Puzzle Collection! And I'm not even sure if this new WiiWare thing will have 4 player support or not :-(

  4. OK ENOUGH OF THIS!

I'm changing "we need a meet" to "WII HAVE A MEET" because it's WAY overdue.

Christian you offered to host as long as it was a Sunday... 27th OK?

That should be the release day for the new Mario Kart. I've got it pre-ordered.

Plus I have the new Smash Bros, and the usual assortment of Nintendo goodness.

I'm not sure what kind of tourney we'll have, but we'll come up with something.

We can also wire up some old classic stuff just for kicks.

If there's any tradeing per se it's gonna be pretty light, so don't go crazy...

If I remember rightly the attic worked pretty well for my projector?

WHO IS WITH ME??? (err hopefull Christian or else we can have it at my place)

  5. C. You've made an extremely visually distracting widget that has a prominent spot on every page, a little lego box of pastel colors - I can't imagine that's considered a plus for dyslexic or other wise challenged viewers.

I could hide the background color changer at the bottom of each page, but then most people wouldn't know it existed. What would you do if you had a background color changer?

I might've considered making it a less distracting single text link, in about the same place, something like "click here to change colors"

Accessibility is a tough issue, you have to find the balance among mkaing good aesthetic choices for your core audience and making sure you don't too much exclude people with challenges while making a site that you can keep up and keep interesting. There's not always a clear answer.

Because it took years before games gave us the option to turn the irritating background music off. Speaking of music, there are people who still think that having slow-loading music that automatically plays is a great thing to put on their pages. Especially irritating when a small business owner wants to force their favorite music on you when it has nothing to do with their product.

Well, as people in general get more net-saavy, you don't see this very often. IMO. Maybe I just hang out on the wrong (or right) sites.

  6. (Tee-hee, not to be TOO much of a jerk but I think putting a color changer on every page kind of falls in the same category ;-) )

Yep, we wouldn't want to give users a choice. We should have learned that after all of those years of playing games that had no options. What was I thinking? I've learned my lesson and I know exactly what to do. On each of my pages I'll add loud music that can't be turned off. That's extremely retro, so everyone should love it. :D

    well, we're getting off-topic, but:

    A. too much choice is almost as bad as not enough choice.

    B. you don't even offer a meaningful choice, which would be either A. light text on dark for people who dig that or B. changing the font

    C. You've made an extremely visually distracting widget that has a prominent spot on every page, a little lego box of pastel colors - I can't imagine that's considered a plus for dyslexic or other wise challenged viewers.

I don't know why you brought the idea of music on every page up; although I would say it falls under the same category of things people thought were cool/useful in the mid-90s.

(It reminds me a bit of the UI tragedy that is PCAEWin - solid emulation, could record movies, but the UI to wire up control was horrendous, and then the options were like pages of pages of details about the display list of games.)

  7. Hey!

Nice to see someone else pimpin' out the 'Wrecks site.

First off... it's funny how striking the margin problem is on the front page, innit? Should be a small little thing but it really stands out, and kind of echoes the site's theme of bold ideas gone kind of wrong. (Tee-hee, not to be TOO much of a jerk but I think putting a color changer on every page kind of falls in the same category ;-) )

And I would say Segataritensoftii is incorrect...... Attempts at Glory on the 2600 would be MORE than welcome at Glorious Trainwrecks! You should just plan to explain what emulator folks should use. But they'd LOVE it....

So there's a Klik of the Month where everyone has 2 hours to make the best worst game they can, but other projects are welcome to be posted there, no matter how long they took to make, as long as they meet the criteria of trying REALLY hard if not quite succeeding... and I think Batari BASIC games tend to fall in this category

(I'm tempted to relearn batariBASIC and see if I can't do a new game in 2 hours for the KotM event (I wouldn't want to relearn bB AND do a game in 2 hours though, that'd be too tough))

Anyway, I think the regular event is the 3rd Saturday of the month, 7PM Eastern time (though it has people all around the world there)

So a lot of the people there do code in Klik and Play, which is that game kit from the 90s. I've been doing about 2/3 of my stuff in Java/Processing, and a few people do stuff in The Games Factory, which is more powerful. So bB would be weclome... even stuff for the C=64 in Gary Kitchen's Gamemaker, as long as you could tell people where to grab an emulator and run your masterpiece.

It's kind of tougher to describe the spirit of the place. I mean, it's not JUST a supportive place for homebrews and attempt to get people's creative juices flowing, but it is that; there is that whole mid-90s "shareware" vibe of doing crazy stuff on screen just because you can. Hang out there for a bit and you should get the idea. I wrote some of the FAQs you see when you click on Wiki on the left side...

  8. I know there isn't a meeting time locked down or anything, but, can I suggest at the next meeting we watch King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters. ( or have it playing on the side or something ) I totally thought that movie was crazy. ( although one sided )

Agreed! That would be fantastic. Whens the DVD coming out?

  9. I thought it was Load"MENU",8,1 but maybe that was later disks 87 was only 2 years in for Gazette

Didnt some of the early Gazette Disks not have a menu?

    EDIT: It is "MENU"

I'll have to check it out later.

I snarfed the whole archive from somewhere, but I guess the disks aren't quite the same as the originals.

  10. I think it was

      LOAD "*",8
     RUN

Pretty normal. Maybe I could dig my disks out sometime to see.

I thought I tried that, w/o the leaving off the 1... maybe not.

I vauguely remember there was something weird about it but not quite what...nothing there seems especially menu-y, or like

    LOAD"GAZETTE",8,1 or whatever...

  11. So, odd... I have all these disk images from Compute's Gazette but I can't figure out how to start the menu program that I think is on there...

    load"*",8,1 doesn't do it...

Here's what the disk listing is . I can run games directly, with the *load programs... any ideas?

  12. Kisrael, I did that too for a while. Hell, clearing easy mode gets you the almost-best, actually-worst, really-cool laser sniper rifle.

Carries 3 seconds of charge, and isn't reloadable. But for those 3 seconds, it is OBSCENELY powerful. 100 damage a shot, 60 shots a second.

D3 has a list of guns, along with when they start dropping, at http://www.d3press.us/files/Earth%20Defens...sc_EDF_2017.doc

I love that they left their press sites accessible to the public.

That's a cool list. (I like some of the art you can d'load from that site) I've now beaten the single player on easy (well, not quite, I should go back and do the early levels on easy that I cleared on Normal) and am now starting from scratch at a friends doing two player; I guess I have a better understanding of farming stamina, and can use these charts to be thoughtful about weapons. Would love to see a Cascade 2 :-)

  13. I love this game, but I haven't played it in quite a while.

I got to a level with a giant walker roving around a village type area and firing it's godawful cannon while spewing out mechs and aircraft. The constant shaking of the screen from ever present explosions made me nauseous. I couldn't continue.

Other than that personal physical limitation, I think the game is great.

Heh. Like around... 15 or so?

    Yeah, a few things:

    1. you can turn off the screenshake

    2. you can't actually kill the walker on the level, it's just survival

I've been switching to easy mode. At least for one player, it's just too much, at least w/ my current weapon set...

  14. I still haven't beat the game on the "harder" setting. I need to clear like 6 or 7 stages. :(

I need to get me a partner and co-op the rest of them I think. Too bad the game doesn't support on-line play. Still I agree, it is a great great game. They have it for $19.99 now on Amazon. If you are a 360 owner and don't have this game, you could do worse than to snag a copy.

I got mine for 20 at Gamestop.

I'm guessing they send about the same number of guys at you in Co-Op? It sounds like it's easier, what with double the firepower and the chance to have two big targets for the enemy hoards...

I tried the spider intro level on Harder and then Hard and couldn't get anywhere. Not sure if my health and guns are up to snuff yet :-)

  15. I know I'm coming to the party late...

Earth Defense Force 2017 is more wonderful than I expected. I'm only up to level 15 , but Wow.

(Heh, it reminds me a bit of Alien Front Online for the DC, but is at LEAST eight times as fantastic)

It touches so many sci fi movie and literature tropes:

50s B-movie, with the scaled up insects

    Godzilla, setting wise

Starship Troopers (the book) the being swarmed by feeling, and going into the dark insect nest

War of the Worlds (the book) with the walkers trudging through the water

Independence Day, giant silent enemy starships hanging over the earth

(I know some of these images may have had their origins elsewhere, but that's where I know 'em from)

And the scale of these things! Like that giant walker on Levels 14 and 15... does SotC get bigger than that? (I sadly couldn't get into SotC) It's the first game that... I dunno, gives me a walker that is to me now what the AT-ATs were in Empire Strikes Back to me as an 7 year old.

I tried the first level a week ago, but wasn't grabbed by it... I think I got killed near the end by my own rocket, but I didn't know it was the en of the level, and I had that feeling of "where is this game going with this" I sometimes get -- especially w/ the item drops, and that's the same problem I had with Bioshock... games that have a plethora of pickups (as opposed to say, classic DOOM with just a few distinct weapons and ammos), and that encouragement to grab all these damn items, because you don't know if they're useful to later. I have to let go of Obsessive/Compulsive urges to do it "perfect", weapon wise, and just find something that seems effective and run with it.

Also, it took me a while to accept that it's ok to level buildings. This game is at an interesting point of "realness" and arcadeness, and sometimes it's not clear what you should fix and what should roll with. Same with your buddies getting killed. I like that they are useful in combat. Though like some other games with destructible environments (Hulk) and non-immortal team mates, if a level goes on too long you find yourself walking in a burned out wasteland.

I'm also sad that vehicles have no crosshairs and (I think) ignore any setting to use inverted aiming.

So I think the single best images for me is made when you destroy one of those small bipedal walkers in a huge explosion, and then its brother starts breaking through the fiery smoke, guns blazing.

A lot of the old talk here was about the weapons, but I don't see that as being such a problem.

(Actually between the "2 weapon limit" and the loading screens explaining the game it reminds me a bit of Mercenaries)

I do wish there were a cheat or savegame way to get all the weapons, but I think I'm getting enough to get by...

  16. The whole subject of racism was just brought up to draw attention away from one of the downfalls of games on the ds.

A fanboi couldn't stand to see anyone mentioning anything negative about nintendo and used the race card to divert the conversation.

I'm calling shenanigans. Even as the conversation drifted towards what's acceptable terminology, most people tried to talk about how they feel about long cut scenes.

Claiming people are being too PC ("playing the race card") is just as much BS as being too PC.

I'm a giant Nintendo fanboy, though I have a DS but haven't ended up liking it all that much, because either A. I'm at home and can use a more high powered console or B. I'm on a bus or subway or whatever and can read a book instead...

  17. God, i would hate to see the touchy people go over to the Neo-geo.com forums, they'd probably have a fricking heart attack.

Oh SHIT! Just observe a coulple of the posts that get put up in "war room"... some of its some funny stuff, but a lot of it kills me a little bit inside

I can't speak for the other "touchy people" (to be honest, I wouldn't have mentioned it on my own though I agree with Jess) but the Neo-Geo forums seem bad, but not worse than what I've seen at the InsertCoin-spin offs and /b/. (And yeah, sometimes I know that "kills me a little" feeling; on the other hand, some of that stuff is as funny as hell.)

Just because I'm not easy to shock doesn't mean I don't support keeping THIS place as friendly as possible; not to the point where it's all rainbows and lollipops, but where people don't casually toss around slang that an "average" person would recognize as derogatory.
