  1. I would make a reasonable offer for the whole lot, but I'd rather see it going to someone who is building a personal collection - that is a great lot you have. My purposes for making an offer would result in the destruction of the finest label Atari games and the resale of the poor label and third party games - this collection/offer deserves a better ending than the one I would provide. At this point it's a fait accompli. I think they ended up about as you suggested, as the base of a collection. It's kind of a farewell to childhood, about 2/3 of those I had growing up. It's also a bit of a farewell to a certain type of collecting. I've never been much of a collector for its own sake, though, just out for games to play. And I've already been through stuff like 2600 Spy Hunter, Pengo, and even a Vectrex. The Vectrex I regret, a little, sometimes, just because it was such a neat idea.
  2. Well, the stuff was going unplayed for years. Most of it is around via emulator. And my main concern was preserving the multiplayer stuff, and the standout "cool" stuff like Battlezone and Gyruss. You do have over 117 different games. This as a lot on Ebay would go anywhere from $100 to $150 plus shipping. You also have a couple of rarer games that might push this lot nearer to the $150 side of things. Well, NECG has a tradition of incredible bargains for people who bother to show up, and are still in collecting mode. I don't mind carrying that tradition forward.

  4. I didn't quite mean for this to be a "bidding" thing, but a few people have done that by PM. Possibly I underestimated the value of this. Part of my reason for aiming local was after talking to UPS (I'm kind of a shipping n00b) it seemed like costs were going to be high, like in the $30-50 range. So my thinking is this: I'm willing not to take this to Ebay or the marketplace forum here. It will be an accidental "hidden gem" of peopel who pay attention to the NECG forum Currently I guess I have a "high bid" of $50 + shipping. I need people to be happy w/ the honor system on shipping; it's still a bit of a question mark, and I'm willing to do whatever the buyer wants me to do. Let me re-iterate, the condition of these carts is a bit mediocre, I tested 'em though (w/ alcohol on cotton swabs) and only the ones marked with the ^ don't work at all. But some are missing labels, there's a fair amount of actiplague, and only the ones w/ * have manuals. So I guess PM me by end of day (Tuesday the 4th) if you want to bid higher, or for the person who put in the bid, if they don't feel like they know what they're getting themselves into :-) I'll post higher bids here. Sorry to NECGers for highjacking the forum a bit, my intentions were good I swear.
  5. Bleh. I'm trying to declutter. I have a milk crate's worth of atari 2600 games that I"m trying to get rid of: Unfortunately, a fair amount of actiplague. WHen I made this list, I think * means there's a manual, and ^ means I couldn't actually get it to work. At this point I'm basically willing to say free to a good home. I wouldn't mind cash but right now this stuff just isn't paying its rent-- I cherry picked the games I really dig, and the multiplayer ones, out. Still some great gaming in there. Any thoughts? 6. There is a NES version of Smash TV. Yeah, at some point in my online travels I either heard from the programmer of that, or from the guy who knows the programmer of that. It turns out one trick to reduce flickering was just being really careful with palette use...
  7. Encounter! I've only played it on Atari 8-bits, but man, was it good! It's a lot more fast paced than most Battlezone-ish games -- a bit more like Robot Tank than Battlezone -- I'm always impressed by 8-bit-ish machines doing 3D-ish environments, and darting among the abstract trees in a very symmetrical-feeling one on one duel would be a blast. Paradroid is a well-respected choice but has a pretty big learning curve. I guess both a plus and a minus is it seems pretty well suited for the NES hardware. (I think, forget about # of sprites on a scanline) Necromancer is another lesser-known classic from back in the day. Another more interesting bet would Crossroads, a personal favorite of mine from the C=64 Compute's Gazette magazine. A bit like Robotron or DOOM, with tones of enemies in a maze, some of which fight each other and not just the player. Has there ever been an NES game using the character tiles almost exclusively? I don't even know if it's feasible but that game is a terrific.
  8. I think at least one change (besides a big F.U. to importers) was how the loading screens that show a picture of the wii-mote now show it in the jacket.
  9. I did get the newer version of the disc. It worked on the Wii. Until this weekend. (Where I was "installing" Mario Galaxies, who knows what "upgrade "crap I might have pulled from online.) Nintendo's region locking can FOaD.
  10. Bleh so actually, if there's a VC port of Dr. Mario, it's going to be the NES original, and not the N64 multiplayer? For shame, Nintendo.
  11. Went to Gamestop. They had a used GC for $30. With a in-decent-shape first party controller! So while I'm annoyed at having to repurchase and lug the hardware just for ONE DAMN GAME, beloved among my buddies, it helps mitigates Nintendo's "FU-USA" approach towards Puzzle Collection on GC. Why the hell are they so clamped down on the GC freeloader on Wii? Can't they just move on to the Wii and DS? Jeez!
  12. Any chance Dr. Mario 4 player will be coming to Wii, in any form? Nintendo borked the GC freeloader. A*holes. I f*in hate "system updates".
  13. Digging Mario Galaxy. HATE that Nintendo borked the Freeloader disc. The only reason I have it is to play Dr. Mario 4 player, and "Puzzle League" When the hell are these games going to come out for Wii and/or virtual console? I'd love to always remain an honest citizen, if they'd just release the games I want in the newer formats!
  14. Jeez, it's not like you can easily make an obscene mii or something. It's just dumb paranoia.
  15. I'm pretty sure I synched. I'd love to see the "first Wiimote in is Wiimote One" thing work but it doesn't seem setup that way. Friend is in Florida, so couldn't just Wiimote it. I didn't realize that foreign Wiis weren't editable, does that count on ones you mail? Yeah, I tend to stow mine for travel a lot and usually take the batteries out. Anyway, I jumped off the handle a bit with this, but between the 16-digit codes, the delays so you're not sure if you did things right, burying the friend code stuff (incl. your own code) in the email app, etc, it was just more irritating than it seemed to need to be.
  16. Sorry about that. Maybe the trick is just rebooting, or using an app like Mii and then returning to the menu. or maybe it's just time. I dunno, but from a UI point of view it's pretty annoying. And then when I went to the Wii menu, it was kvetching because it wsn't controller 1 that I was using. Sheesh! I had to dig that one up.
  17. SO first off, there's this super-retarded 16 number code. Now that both my friend and I have entered each other into our address books, it's still saying "you must register one another to be able to exchange messages" admittedly we both just did this, but still. WTF, Nintendo, if there's going to be a delay before I PROVE THAT I DIDN'T JUST MAKE UP A F*IN' 16 DIGIT CODE IN ORDER TO HARASS STRANGERS then tell me that. Do we just wait or is there something we need to do? God DAMN. And once we do that, is there some way to encourage Miis to mingle in particular? He made his Mii on my system and he'd like to get it on his. Jeez Nintendo, it's like you don't want people to actually use your service.
  18. Hey thanks for joining in! That was fun as usual. Which product did you use for yours?
  19. The Klikth Day of Klikmas (Klik of the Month Klub #6) is happening tomorrow, Saturday Dec 15, 4PM Pacific, 7PM Eastern.... a 2 hour online game jam... come and join the fun! Holiday theme this time. --------------- Hey there! So for a few months now I've been hanging out on a site called glorioustrainwrecks.com . A "Glorious Trainwreck" is a game whose reach exceeds its grasp, a game that is awful in a great way or great... it tends to be focused on using this old gamewriting tool called "Klik & Play", something that's from the early days of Windows and feels like it -- but there's no restriction on what platform you use, there's been a text adventure there recently, and I tend to use this one Java-based "Processing" environment. So, every month the site hosts an event, the Klik of the Month, it meets 7PM US Eastern Time, for people to write the gamiest game they can in 2 hours. Two hours, that's it. Some cheating is encouraged, but by-and-large the goal is to bust through creative game-writing blocks and just put together something wonderfully, rhinocerously terrific. People gather on IRC and cheer each other on and ask questions and compare notes and swagger and cry. The camaraderie is great, and I think making a game is such a rewarding. Most people work in KNP, but uou could even do something in Batari BASIC (or ASM if you were THAT hard core ) though you might have to tell people how to fire up an emulator... ANYWAY, I know this might seem weird and/or intimidating at the outset, especially for non-coders. But it's really a pretty friendly happening. I just completed two FAQs, one on the event http://glorioustrainwrecks.com/?q=wiki/KotM_N00B_FAQ and one on KNP itself, http://glorioustrainwrecks.com/?q=wiki/Learning_KNP_FAQ . On that site, you can also see a lot of the prior works and ongoing projects. So, in short, its two hours well spent. There's great support and camaraderie, and games are... well, they occupy a great space in pop culture and the human condition. Playing games is such a human thing to do, and MAKING video games ... the ability to create a fun and interactive system that no one has ever seen before -- at the risk of sounding all high-falutin', I really find it something special in terms of human history and experience. Hope to see some of you there!
  20. Thanks for pointing those out, very cool! I can't believe I didn't think of Crossroads! Brilliant games. You probably found http://www.dessgeega.com/crossroads.html - I did the interview w/ the author last year that she links to, as well as the classicgaming.com article (old URL doesn't work, bleh) that pointed it out to Dess. It's one of the very first that seemed to have deliberate enemy cross-fighting; some species were allies, but other ones seemed to tear into each other with a vengance.
  21. You know, I think I saw this once in the arcade but never really played it, though I love the pseudo wing commander vibe. Did it see any kind of port, ever?
  22. Bleh, didn't dig Exit. Too much like Cloning Clyde, and in general the slow-moving physical puzzle aspect isn't too appealing to me. YMMV. It looked kind of neat. Thank goodness for the return of the preview culture :-)
  23. I would love some kind of photorealistic bonus level. Also, I wish on the original that it wasn't so hard to unlock unlimited time on the final level, so that I could let my non-gamer friends enjoy it.
