Also, Votrax (maker of the SC-01-A chip found in the Alien Group Voice Box) also made a RS-232C Votrax Personal Speech System. You could easily have a modem on R1, a chronograph on R2, a speech synthesizer on R3 and a printer on R4. Not likely, but possible. I'd love to see photos or video of an Atari 8-bit controlling a model train layout using the 850!

The 850 manual also has the following examples: How many times did you use all four joystick ports on the Atari 400/800. Except for Mule and a few other games, four joystick ports were probably overkill as well.
-
You could plug in a Hayes Chronograph. You could interface with a HAM radio. You could hook up an old (now really old) teletype. You could basically hook up anything that communicated through RS-232 standard.

There is a books worth of material in this thread!

Paul Rickards just updated the firmware in his WiFi232 internet Hayes-compatible modem with an "ATRD" command so that you can read the date and time. See the users guide. It requires the 850 Interface and a WFI connection.

Here is an ATARI BASIC utility I wrote to set and retrieve the data, time and day of week from the Hayes Chronograph connected by the ATARI 850 Interface Module. The disk includes DOS, 850 Handler and BASIC program called CHRONO.BAS. CHRONO_850.atr And here is a link to the Hayes Stack Chronograph Owner's Manual. ---Bill

From Veline04-Old Mother Hubbard's GCHIP Cook Book.atr: this seems to be a menu driven collection of ATARI BASIC graphic demos. -

Looking for Hayes Transet 1000 User's Guide
Bill Lange replied to Bill Lange's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I think not many were sold either. I don't have one, but someone reached out to me saying he had one, but no docs. -
Does anyone have the user's guide/manual for the Hayes Transet 1000 or know where it might be archived? I've looked around the usual places and can't seem to find it.

Here are some more portable ideas: https://www.instagram.com/lovehulten/ A small Raspberry Pi 3 Atari 800 emulator could be made to fit this form factor ... may be a USB port for a keyboard.

There is always the Ben Hack Atari 800 laptop.

AModem752.atr Here is the disk directory (using SpartaDOS 3.2g) of the AModem752.atr disk image: There doesn't seem to be a DOS on the disk image. When I ENTERed the AMODEM752.LST file from BASIC, I can see an unDIMed string HDR and a RETURN without a GOSUB in the 2nd line. Here is the AMODEM752.LIST BASIC source code: And here is the READ.ME text file: Since it has a LISTed BASIC program that needs to be merged with something else, it looks like this might be an incomplete patch to an existing AMODEM version, possibly to keep the file sizes down in the era of 300 BAUD modems. -

Running Prowler from Altirra 2.81 requires a virtual 850 to be attached. It uses SpartaDOS 3.2. Here is the directory: Here is a screenshot of The Prowler running: Uploaded to archive.org.
